Abstract:One dimensional ZnO nanostructures prepared by low temperature solution-phase methods have been investigated for a number of potential applications. In these applications, they take an important function as charge transport path in the devices. Thus, the electrical conductivity, carrier mobility and ZnO-substrate junction are crucial for device performance. One comment way for this purpose is to dope ZnO NWs in synthesis process. However, it is found that doping can be difficult in aqueous systems. It is because the dopant species can easily form aquo ions and not be incorporated into the crystal lattice. Although alternative methods such as post-thermal-annealing can be employed, such a high temperature process is not compatible for most of the devices fabrication procedure. Therefore, it is necessary to develop new techniques for this purpose. Here, the authors report the investigation of effects of pulsed-laser treatment on the conductivity and field emission of ZnO NWs.

Abstract:Unoriented ZnO nanowires are fabricated either on the surface of silicon wafer or at the tip of needle-like tungsten by vapor-phase deposition.Both the plane field emission and tip field emission of ZnO nanowires are studied using a field emission microscope.The results show that for unoriented ZnO nanowire thin films,the electric field intensities corresponding to the turn-on voltage and threshold voltage of field emission are 4.7 and 7.6V/μm,which are much lower than those of aligned nanowire arrays.The enhancement of the field emission ability is attributed to the fact that the field-induced screening effect can be effectively avoided due to the widely spaced intervals that exist between the unoriented nanowires.The field emission of the tungsten tip also can be effectively improved by assembling ZnO nanowires on the tip,which presents a potential application of ZnO nanowire on the probe of electron microscopes with ultrahigh resolution.

The geometric uniformity of the nanowire and the surface smoothness were improved by optimizing the fabrication processes. Abstract:We have demonstrated the crystalline ZnO–Al2O3 core–shell nanowire structure by atomic layer deposition (ALD) at a temperature 100°C. The core–shell structure could have potential applications in the fabrication of ZnO field effect transistor. After dissolving the ZnO core, shape defined, rigid and robust crystalline Al2O3 shelled nanostructures have been fabricated. Nanowire ZnO nanostructures have been replicated by alumina shell. This is one of the most effective techniques for producing core–shell or shell/hollowed nanostructures of any desired objects. The Al2O3 shelled nanostructures could have potential applications as space confined nanoreactors, drug delivery, nanofluidic channels and optical transmitting.

Abstract:Highly oriented ZnO nanoneedle arrays were electrochemically prepared by anodization of zinc foil in a freshly prepared zincate saturated aqueous solution at room temperature. Typically, the needles have a length of 550-650 nm with a tip diameter of 10-15 nm and a root diameter of 50-60 nm, and grow along their [001] direction. The crystal structure of the ZnO nanoneedles was confirmed by scanning and transmission electron micrographs, x-ray diffraction patterns and photoluminescence spectra.

Abstract:ZnO nanowire field emitter arrays with self-aligned focus electrode were designed. The simulation of the electron trajectory verified the focusing characteristics of designed structure. Abstract:Earlier, welldeveloped techniques of reactive ion etching (insotropic) and wet chemical etching (anisotropic) in combination with oxidation sharpening were used for the fabrication of nanotip arrays for field electron emission applications. The fabrications require lithography technique to form masks for the following etching, and normally high temperature oxidation sharpening process is needed. In the present paper, we report a non-lithography and non-oxidation-sharpening method for ultra-high .&nsity Si nanotip arrays fabrication. In addition, novel processes were developed to obtain Si nanotip array with different coating materials on apex, i.e., Sic and amorphous Si (a-Si). Comparative studies were carried out on the field electron emission properties of the Si nanotip arrays with different coated layers.

Abstract:Vertically well-aligned ZnO nanorod arrays with three kinds of tip morphology-abruptly sharpened, tapered and plane-have been controllably fabricated with wafer size uniformity by vapor phase transport and condensation. Except that the tip morphology is distinctly different, all of these nanorods are single crystalline, growing along their wurtzite < 0001 > axis, with similar diameters, lengths and densities. The field emission properties of these nanorod arrays are comparatively investigated and are found to be strongly affected by the tip morphology. A nanorod with the abruptly sharpened tip possesses the lowest turn-on and threshold electric fields as well as the highest field enhancement factor. Further analysis reveals that the abruptly sharpened tip morphology can reduce the screening effect more efficiently than the others. These results are very helpful for the design, fabrication and optimization of integrated field emitters using 1D nanostructures as the cathode material.

Abstract:By a novel controlled combustion synthesis method, a large number of nanostructured ZnO whiskers with different morphologies, such as tetra-needles, long-leg tetra-needles and multi-needles, are prepared without any additive in open air at high temperature. The morphologies and crystalline structures of the as-prepared ZnO nanostructured whiskers are investigated by SEM and XRD. The possible growth mechanism on the nanostructured ZnO whiskers is proposed. The experimental results indicate that the dielectric constants and losses of the nanostructured ZnO whiskers are very low, demonstrating that the nanostructured ZnO whiskers are low-loss materials for microwave absorption in X-band. However, obvious microwave absorption in nanostructured ZnO whiskers is observed. The quasi-microantenna model may be attributed to the microwave absorption of the ZnO whiskers.

Abstract:ZnO nanowire field-emitter arrays (FEAs) show great application potentials in large-area vacuum microelectronics devices. However, the electron divergence is an issue which should be addressed. In this paper, ZnO nanowire FEAs with co-planar focus electrode were designed. A four-mask fabrication process and lift-off process were adopted to achieve the integration of focus electrode. The device demonstrated line-addressing and focusing capability with a spacing of 5 mm between anode and cathode, and the linewidth of field-emission images was reduced from 2.25 to 1.35 mm when the focus voltage changed from 50 to -50 V. Besides, line-shaped emission patterns were observed during focusing process, which was attributed to the emission pattern from the ZnO nanowire and the asymmetrical focusing electrical field.

Abstract:This article focuses on the field emission from a small number of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowires. ZnO nanowires were grown directly on W tips and their field emission was studied in a traditional field emission microscope (FEM). The FEM pattern of a single ZnO nanowire was ring shaped, indicating that most of the emission from the (0001) facets of the ZnO nanowires came from their circumferences. Scanning electron microscopy observation, measurement of dependence of the emission current on the applied cathode voltage (I-V behavior), and acquirement of FEM patterns were performed before and after heat treatment of the samples, respectively. The heat treatment was found to play either a favorable or an unfavorable role. It could lead to a stable emission or damage of the emitters, depending on the heating conditions.

Abstract:Large-scale arrays of highly oriented single-crystal ZnO nanotubes (ZNTs) are successfully fabricated on transparent conductive substrates by a simple method from an aqueous solution at a low temperature (typically 85°C). The tubular morphology of the ZnO nanostructures is formed by a defect-selective chemical etching of the electrodeposited ZnO nanorods. The size of the ZNT arrays is determined by that of ZnO nanorod arrays which can be readily controlled by tuning several electrodeposition parameters. The present method can be employed to prepare ZNT arrays on flexible, conductive substrates, as well as on patterned conductive substrates.

Abstract:ZnO nanowire field emitter arrays were fabricated for field emission display application by combining a microfabrication and self-assembly processes. The ZnO nanowires were synthesized without catalyst by thermal oxidation of zinc thin film. In order to improve its performance and fabrication compatibility with device structure, the effects of oxidation temperature and film deposition method were studied. The characteristics of the ZnO nanowire field emitter arrays in a fully-sealed 3.5 inch field emission device will be presented.

Abstract:Ultrafine nanostructures(feature size 5 nm) have been successfully fabricated with single-nanometre precision using the strong irradiation damage effect of convergent electron beam in a 300 kV high-resolution transmission electron microscope.This approach can be widely applied to inorganic solid-state materials from insulators,semiconductors to metals.The feature size can be precisely controlled by the probe size and the irradiation time.Our approach is promising in design and fabrication of ultrafine nanostructures and nanodevices.

Abstract:Sharpness of field emitter tips is one of the key factors to achieve excellent field emission performance. In order to sharpen the tips to atomic scale, a new method combining the bottom-up process of wafer-scale nanopattern formation via self-assembly of diblock copolymer with the top-down process of anisotropic etching of Si followed by nanocasting is developed. Geometrical hindrance in the oxidation of Si at nanometer scale is exploited to further sharpen the field emission tips.

Abstract:Large-area arrays of vertically aligned ZnO-nanotapers with tailored taper angle and height are electrodeposited on planar Zn-plate via continuously tuning the Zn(NH3)4(NO3)2 concentration in the electrolyte. Experimental measurements reveal that the field-emission performance of the ZnO-nanotaper arrays is enhanced with the sharpness and height of the ZnO-nanotapers. Theoretically, the ZnO-nanotaper is simplified to a "charge disc" model, based on which the characteristic macroscopic field enhancement factor (γC) is quantified. The theoretically calculated γC values are in good agreement with the experimental ones measured from arrays of ZnO-nanotapers with a series of geometrical parameters. The ZnO-nanotaper arrays have promising potentials in field-emission. The electrochemical synthetic strategy we developed may be extended to nanotaper arrays of other materials that are amenable to electrodeposition, and the "charge disc" model can be used for quasi-one-dimensional field emitters of other materials with nano-sized diameters.

Abstract:Atomically sharp high-density tungsten nanotip arrays are fabricated by nanocasting using a patterned SiO2 template. The fabrication involves mainly top-down processes making it fully compatible with today's Si technology. The obtained tungsten nanotip arrays show atomically sharp tips (radius of curvature smaller than 1 nm), high emitter density (similar to 5 x 10(10) cm(-2)), perfect tip alignment, and excellent field emission properties with a turn-on field of 2.1 V/mu m and a field enhancement factor of 3334. The unique fabrication process flow leads to the highly uniform height of the W nanotips, allowing for submicron cathode-anode spacing, which very much relaxes the requirement of vacuum level and makes it possible for low vacuum operation.
