Abstract:Effect of high temperature reduction process on composition,micro-hardness,loose density,fluid ability,compressibility of LAP100.29 water-atomized iron powder(produced by Powder Metallurgy Limited Corporation of Laiwu Iron and Steel Group) was investigated.The results show that by reduction at 900 ℃ in H2 atmosphere,iron powder with higher purity,better fluid ability,loose density,lower micro-hardness and higher compressibility can be obtained.For the reduced iron powder,the fluid ability was improved ~2 times;the loose density improved ~0.1 g/cm-3;the compressibility improved more than 0.1 g/cm-3 and the micro-hardness significant lowered to 69～89 HV.The green density of the reduced iron powder can be higher than 7.15 g/cm-3 at 600 MPa.

Abstract:After the converter steelmaking process, a considerable number of ferroalloys are needed to remove dissolved oxygen from the molten steel, but it also forms a lot of oxide inclusions that cannot be completely removed. At the same time, it increases the carbon emissions in the steel production process. After years of research, our team have developed a series of clean deoxidation technologies, including carbon deoxidation, hydrogen deoxidation, and waste plastic deoxidation of molten steel to address the aforementioned issues. In this study, thermodynamic calculations and laboratory experiments were employed to verify that carbon and hydrogen can reduce the total oxygen content in the molten steel melt to below 5 × 10 −6 and 10 × 10 −6 , respectively. An analysis of the deoxidation mechanisms and effects of polyethylene and polypropylene was also conducted. In addition, the applications of carbon deoxidation technology in different steels with the hot-state experiment and industrial production were discussed carefully. The carbon deoxidation experimental results of different steels were as follows: (1) the oxygen content of bearing steel was effectively controlled at 6.3 × 10 −6 and the inclusion number density was lowered by 74.73% compared to aluminum deoxidized bearing steel; (2) the oxygen content in gear steel was reduced to 7.7 × 10 −6 and a 54.49% reduction of inclusion number density was achieved with almost no inclusions larger than 5 μm from the average level of industry gear steels; (3) a total oxygen content of M2 high-speed steel was as low as 3.7 × 10 −6 . In industrial production practice, carbon deoxidation technique was applied in the final deoxidation stage for non-aluminum deoxidized bearing steel, and it yielded excellent results that the oxygen content was reduced to below 8 × 10 −6 and the oxide inclusions in the steel mainly consist of silicates, along with small amounts of spinel and calcium aluminate.

Abstract:Oxygen content of gear steel was decreased and the cleanliness improved by optimizing and controlling EAF smelting,refining and continuous casting process,and adopting a series of technical measures with increasing hot metal charging rate,pre-deoxidation and protection casting and so on in Special Steel Plant of Laiwu Iron and Steel Co.,Ltd..The results showed that the oxygen content of 20CrMnTiH and its affiliated steel grade was decreased from 25×10-6 to 18×10-6 after optimization,and the lowest was 11×10-6.

Abstract:The aim of the study was to address the challenge – in a particular plant – of the high (FeO) content in slag in Electric Arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking, adopting a high ratio of hot metal to scrap, which uses the operation mode of adding hot metal and smelting simultaneously, the oxygen blowing process was optimised through a combination of industrial practice and theoretical calculation. Specifically, the start time of oxygen blowing was delayed, and the [C] content of the molten steel at the smelting endpoint was increased; furthermore, an oxygen blowing method was performed with a [C] content of 0.6–0.8% for the molten bath during the smelting process. After the oxygen blowing method was optimised, the oxygen consumption per ton of steel decreased by 7.96 Nm3, and the (FeO) content of slag decreased by 11.85% on average.

Control of oxide inclusion for low carbon and low silicon steel

Abstract:In order to improve the castability of molten steel and avoid casting break by nozzle clogging the processes of converter such as the post-stirring,top slag deoxidization and carbon deoxidization by RH are optimized on the basis of the production practice in low carbon and low silicon steel in Chongqing steel.Since the process improvement,the quality fraction of BOF end point oxygen has been decreased by 127×10-6,the quality fraction of FeO and MnO in the slag reduced to less than 5%,addition amount of ferro-aluminum decreased by 0.38~0.43 kg/t,oxide inclusion decreased effectively and the quality fraction of T.O controlled in the range of(14~25)×10-6.Production practice shows that by adoption of "BOF→RH→CC" processing route in production of low carbon and low silicon steel the cleanliness of the steel can be improved and the continuous casting heats of single tundish reaches 18 heats.

Abstract:In the long traditional process of steelmaking, excess oxygen is blown into the converter, and alloying elements are used for deoxidation. This inevitably results in excessive deoxidation of products remaining within the steel liquid, affecting the cleanliness of the steel. With the increasing requirements for steel performance, reducing the oxygen content in the steel liquid and ensuring its high cleanliness is necessary. After more than a hundred years of development, the total oxygen content in steel has been reduced from approximately 100 × 10 −6 to approximately 10 × 10 −6 , and it can be controlled below 5 × 10 −6 in some steel grades. A relatively stable and mature deoxidation technology has been formed, but further reducing the oxygen content in steel is no longer significant for improving steel quality. Our research team developed a deoxidation technology for bearing steel by optimizing the entire conventional process. The technology combines silicon–manganese predeoxidation, ladle furnace diffusion deoxidation, and vacuum final deoxidation. We successfully conducted industrial experiments and produced interstitial-free steel with natural decarbonization predeoxidation. Non-aluminum deoxidation was found to control the oxygen content in bearing steel to between 4 × 10 −6 and 8 × 10 −6 , altering the type of inclusions, eliminating large particle Ds-type inclusions, improving the flowability of the steel liquid, and deriving a higher fatigue life. The natural decarbonization predeoxidation of interstitial-free steel reduced aluminum consumption and production costs and significantly improved the quality of cast billets.

Abstract:Herein, the experimental procedure and mechanism of low‐temperature carbothermic reduction are illustrated. The produced directreduced iron (DRI) is further removed by refining slag to obtain a high‐quality alloy material. The illustration alsohighlights the weight loss rate of the reduction system and the change of harmful element content in DRI under different reaction conditions. The current method for recovering iron oxide scale in the steel industry is not economically optimal, especially for high‐alloy scales found in alloyed steel. This study focuses on iron oxide scale containing valuable metals like chromium (Cr), molybdenum (Mo), and vanadium (V). The required carbon addition is calculated based on the iron and chromium oxides in the scale. The effects of varying carbon additions and reduction temperatures on reduction efficiency are thoroughly examined. Kinetic studies show that as temperature and carbon increase, the rate‐limiting step shifts from interfacial diffusion to interfacial reaction. Reduction experiments assess carbon utilization, metallization rate, deoxidation rate, and removal of harmful elements. Results show that high temperatures hinder sulfur (S) and phosphorus (P) removal, and excess carbon reduces carbon utilization efficiency. Optimal conditions are a carbon ratio of 0.2174 and a temperature of 1150 °C. The carbothermic reduction product requires further refinement through conventional ladle slag systems to meet the quality standards for metallic materials. Over 65% of alloying elements are recovered, though phosphorus content remains slightly higher than in finished alloy steel. The materials from this study are suitable as high‐quality intermediates for alloy steel production.

Industrial Experiment of Technique Optimization on IF Steel in RH Degasser

Abstract:The production process was tracked and investigated by aiming the problem on RH refining process in the high carbon content and instability in IF steel production at Panzhihua Steel Works.Industrial experiments of technique optimization on IF steel in RH degasser was done by controlling technique psocesses of converter end point and the oxygen activity of molten steel and the slag composition and the oxygenation in the ladle,as well as the time of decarburization so on.Industrial experiments showed that the fluctuation range of the carbon content was small when IF molten steel left from RH degasser.Adding the carbon powder,the oxygen activity of decarburization molten steel was controlled at 121×10-6～318×10-6 and its average value was 230.1×10-6,it was lower than original process about 120×10-6,purity of molten steel was improved.Adopting the slag-modifier of high alkalinity adjusted the composition in the ladle,the content of CaO increased and the content of Al2O3 decreased and slag sticking phenomenon of inserted ducts were mitigated obviously.

Abstract:Blast furnace (BF) ironmaking maintains its role as the predominating process for producing hot metal (HM) from iron ore. The process is highly carbon-consumption and emission intensive. Considering its massive production scale, any improvement of the process in terms of the operational parameters could results in significant social, environmental and economical benefits. The most concerned operational parameters of the BF is the coke rate, with the reduction of the coke rate being long time pursued. However, the limit of coke rate reduction for an operating BF is rarely attempted for safety and stability. Therefore, the limit for coke rate reduction for an operating BF largely remains implicit, with the underlying mechanism being unknown. In this work, a previously developed multifluid BF process model is used to investigate the limit of coke reduction on an experimental scale BF. With the gradual reduction of the coke rate, the BF is analysed in detail in terms of in-furnace multiphase flow, thermochemical behaviors as well as overall performance indicators. The minimum coke rate to maintain a targeted production is identified with the underlying mechanism for the BF operated with a coke rate at its limit explained. Also, possible measures for increasing the limits of coke reduction are proposed. This is done by increasing the hot blast temperature, which proves to be useful based on the simulation results. The results generated from this work should be useful to improve the BF ironmaking process efficiency, hence cutting CO2 emission and guiding green production in the future.
Optimizing RH refining process to maximize cleanliness of low-carbon low-silicon Al killed steel

Abstract:In the LD–RH–CC process for producing low-carbon low-silicon steel, the cleanliness level of the slab was studied by optimizing the compositions of the refining slag and oxygen blowing flow in trial heats through judicious control. In order to realize RH without oxygen blowing, the oxygen content of molten steel should reach 475–525 ppm before RH degassing to guarantee that the free oxygen is in the range of 100–150 ppm after the carbon–oxygen reaction. When the slag compositions were controlled to CaO = 41–50 wt-%, Al 2 O 3 = 29–36 wt-%, SiO 2 = 5–11 wt-% and MgO = 6–10 wt-% in the RH treatment without feeding calcium, the total oxygen content in the plate was 18 ppm, and the nitrogen content decreased to 17 ppm in the improved process. The micro-inclusions in the slab mainly consisted of MgO–Al 2 O 3 –(MnS) and Al 2 O 3 –(MnS), and the particle size was mainly concentrated below 3 μm. The average total amount of large electrolytic inclusions in the slab was 1.384 mg kg steel −1 . The large inclusions were mainly SiO 2 , Al 2 O 3 , SiO 2 –Al 2 O 3 –(K 2 O), and MgO–Al 2 O 3 .

Abstract:The steel industry contributes to creating an environmentally friendly society by providing high-quality steel and working to develop low-carbon processes. Using hydrogen produced from renewable energy to replace part of coke in blast furnaces is one of the measures to reduce fossil carbon dioxide emissions in the process of steelmaking. In this paper, a series of reduction experiments of Fe2O3 pellets at different temperatures were carried out under three conditions of hydrogen-rich in blast furnace. The variation law between reduction degree and apparent activation energy was calculated. The result shows that when the reduction degree reaches 11% and 70%, the apparent activation energy reaches the peak, which are 38.9 kJ/mol and 19.5 kJ/mol, respectively. This suggests that the reduction process is affected by two or more mechanisms. Then, on the basis of the typical single interface reaction kinetics model, the multistep reduction kinetics model of hydrogen-rich reduction Fe2O3 pellets was established. In addition, based on the results of industrial computerized tomography (CT) analysis, the three-dimensional pore network model and velocity model of Fe2O3 pellets after reduction were established. The coupling relationship between the fractal dimension of pellet pores and reduction atmosphere was studied by introducing fractal theory. Under hydrogen-rich reduction condition, the volume fractal dimension of pore structure of Fe2O3 pellets increases from 2.41 to 2.58. Therefore, the pore structure formed by hydrogen-rich reduction is conducive to the diffusion of reducing gas in the pellet, so as to improve the reduction degree of pellet.

Abstract:Based on computational fluid dynamics, chemical reaction kinetics, principles of transfer in metallurgy, and other principles, a multi-fluid model for a traditional blast furnace was established. The furnace conditions were simulated with this multi-fluid mathematical model, and the model was verified with the comparison of calculation and measurement. Then a multi-fluid model for an oxygen blast furnace in the gasifier-full oxygen blast furnace process was established based on this traditional blast furnace model. With the established multi-fluid model for an oxygen blast furnace, the basic characteristics of iron ore reduction process in the oxygen blast furnace were summarized, including the changing process of the iron ore reduction degree and the compositions of the burden, etc. The study found that compared to the traditional blast furnace, the magnetite reserve zone in the furnace shaft under oxygen blast furnace condition was significantly reduced, which is conducive to the efficient operation of blast furnace. In order to optimize the oxygen blast furnace design and operating parameters, the iron ore reduction process in the oxygen blast furnace was researched under different shaft tuyere positions, different recycling gas temperatures, and different allocation ratios of recycling gas between the hearth tuyere and the shaft tuyere. The results indicate that these three factors all have a substantial impact on the ore reduction process in the oxygen blast furnace. Moderate shaft tuyere position, high recycling gas temperature, and high recycling gas allocation ratio between hearth and shaft could significantly promote the reduction of iron ore, reduce the scope of the magnetite reserve zone, and improve the performance of oxygen blast furnace. Based on the above findings, the recommendations for improvement of the oxygen blast furnace design and operation were proposed.

Abstract:Abstract Nitrogen content has an prominent effect on the properties of rolling material and demands should be paid more attention. Even then the residuary nitrogen in steel is quite small, it has an impotent effect on the mechanical properties of materials. The present nitrogen content control process is relatively briefness and it needs to be farther studied. In this paper, through the analysis of possible nitrogen increase and nitrogen control-related production processes in the whole metallurgical process of steel, nitrogen control, and nitrogen reduction are carried out in stages by using an optimized smelting process. After adopting the new process, the final nitrogen in EAF can be reduced by 50%, the vacuum nitrogen removal efficiency can be increased by 20%, the nitrogen increase in continuous casting can be controlled below 5 ppm, and the final nitrogen content in rolled steel can be reduced to below 50 ppm.

Abstract:Abstract This article deals with removing oxygen at the final stage of steel smelting in arc steel-making furnaces. It is shown that the remaining oxygen during crystallization forms floccules and significantly reduces the quality of the finished metal. During the subsequent metal processing by pressure on these floccules, the metal is torn apart and makes it impossible to obtain a steel sheet. Deoxidation is performed with expensive ferroalloys, and their consumption must be minimized. To achieve economic efficiency, it has been proposed to use recycled aluminum slag as a relatively inexpensive local deoxidizer. To optimize the deoxidizer consumption, a rapid analysis method was developed using the electromotive force (EMF) determination to determine the oxygen activity in liquid steel. As a result of the study, the composition, structure, and technological parameters of deoxidized steel were determined. The use of this technology in production will make it possible to obtain high-quality steel and improve environmental protection through secondary aluminum waste.

Abstract:Currently, achieving carbon peaking and neutrality poses significant challenges for China's iron and steel industry. Low-carbon smelting in large blast furnaces (BFs) is poised to be a pivotal element in attaining the “double carbon” goal. This study, grounded in the fundamental process theory of blast furnace ironmaking, employs data analysis to investigate production technology across 25 large blast furnaces in China exceeding 4000 m 3 in 2021. It specifically examines the correlation between pig iron silicon content and fuel consumption, elucidating strategies and techniques for low-silicon smelting. By exemplifying the reduction of silicon content in a 5050 m 3 blast furnace of a Chinese enterprise, the study systematically delineates the low-silicon smelting process, including specific parameters and standards concerning fuel consumption, raw material conditions, and operational systems. The findings demonstrate that a reduction of 0.1% in pig iron silicon content can decrease carbonaceous fuel consumption by at least 5 kg/t. Given current raw material conditions and equipment levels, it is feasible to reduce the silicon content of iron in large-scale blast furnaces exceeding 4000 m 3 in China to 0.3%.

Abstract:In this study, a novel double-stage reduction method of “low temperature and high temperature” was proposed to improve the reaction efficiency of the hydrogen reduction technology of the oxide scale formed on hot-rolled steel. The reduction behavior of the oxide scale in 20 vol% H2–Ar at various reduction methods was investigated in detail. The weight change of specimen under various reduction methods was measured by thermogravimetric analysis, and then the reduction degree and the reaction rate were calculated based on the measured value. Scanning electron microscopy was used to observe the surface and the cross-sectional morphologies of the oxide scale after the reduction reaction, and the mass percent of oxygen and iron in the cross-sectional reduction layer was measured by energy-dispersive spectroscopy. X-ray diffraction was applied to characterize the phase transformation of the oxide scale in the heating process, and the phase composition of the oxide scale and reduction layer. The experimental results indicated that the reduction degree and the reaction rate of the oxide scale during the double-stage reduction method increased significantly compared with the traditional single-stage reduction method in the range of 500–800 °C. The mechanism of the double-stage reduction method was discussed from two aspects of the phase transformation of the oxide scale and the restrictive link of the gas (H2)–solid (Fe oxides) reduction reaction.

Abstract:The causes of the fracture phenomenon in drawing process and the high spatter coefficient in welding process for ER70S-6 welding wire steel are analyzed and determined.The mean total oxygen content of wire rod is decreased from 0.005 5% to 0.003 0%, the mean nitrogen content of wire rod is decreased from 0.005 5% to 0.004 0%, the mean class C inclusion levels is decreased from 2.0 to 1.0 class, the mean class D inclusion levels is decreased from 1.0 to 0.5 class, through the measures of optimizing chemical composition content and alloying material types of wire rod, improving the binary basicity of refining slag, fining refining and continuous casting process control.The breakage and welding spatter in the process of drawing are decreased obviously, which meets the users' requirement.

Abstract:To replace the traditional pickling process, an environmentally friendly gaseous reduction method was used for the removal of the oxide scale of steel in this work. Isothermal hydrogen reduction of high-strength steel was investigated in the temperature range from 500 °C to 800 °C in 30%H2–N2 atmosphere. The obtained results revealed a clear relationship between the oxide phase composition and the holding temperature during the heating stage, prior to hydrogen reduction. With increasing temperatures, the Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 components of the oxide scale gradually transform into FeO. When the sample was reduced under H2–N2 atmosphere, the surface morphology of the high-strength steel was different from that of the traditional hot-rolled steel strip. It was observed that the surface pore size and porosity increased with increasing temperatures and internal and external oxidation occurred simultaneously in the reduction layer. The addition of carbon to the reduction system decreased the water pressure and clearly promoted the reduction at 800 °C. The surface of the sample was reduced to irregular but uniformly distributed small particles of pure iron. Defects in the oxide scale such as cracks and gaps and carbon reacting with water play a vital role in the reduction process. Since the use of hydrogen reduction of hot-rolled strip eliminates the need for the acid pickling pollution process and the pre-oxidation process in the annealing of cold-rolled strips, it can significantly reduce the energy consumption of steel production and improve the production line efficiency. Thus, this approach is a promising green production technology in hot-dip galvanizing.
