Abstract:Based on both domestic and foreign existing study results,and combining PSCAD simulation analysis,this paper studies and discusses the switching over-voltage in UHVAC and its restrictions.Researches show that main attention should be paid on the ground fault,closing and opening over-voltage in UHVAC switching over-voltage.Ground fault over-voltage is relatively lower and can be restricted to allowance by installing arresters at the both ends of line.Closing over-voltage can be suppressed by adopting closing resistor and installing multiple arresters along the line.The former measure has problems of breakdown and damages easily,while the later is verified in EHV system.Opening over-voltage can be restricted by opening resistor and multiple arresters along the line.Considering the inadequacy of opening resistor,it is not suggested for the UHVAC lines in China.
Research on Lower Limit of Compensation Degree for UHVA-C Transmission Lines

Abstract:To restrict both secondary arc current and no-load voltage of UHVAC transmission line, the relation between secondary arc current and compensation degree of HV shunt reactor and that between voltage of no-load line and the compensation degree are researched, and the method to determine the lower limit of compensation degree of HV shunt reactor in the viewpoint of restricting secondary arc cuffent and voltage of no-load line is given. Research results show that to restrict secondary arc current of single-circuit UHVAC line the capacity of HV shunt reactor should be higher than the capacitive power of interphase capacitance; the capacity of HV shunt reactor should be higher that the sum of capacitive power of interphase capacitance and partial capacity of inter-circuit capacitance; thus the lower limit of compensation degree of HV shunt reactor determined by the restriction of secondary arc current is evidently influenced by parameters of transmission line, and within possible parameter variation range of UHVAC transmission line, the lower limit of compensation degree of HV shunt reactor for single-circuit UHVAC line is 55% and that for double-circuit UHVAC line is 65%. The lower limit of compensation degree of HV shunt reactor determined by the restriction of voltage of no-load line should be increased with the increasing of the length of transmission line and is closely related to the type of drop-point of both ends of UHVAC line. For short UHVAC line the lower limit of compensation degree of HV shunt reactor can be determined by the restriction of secondary arc current in general; for long UHVAC line the lower limit of compensation degree of HV shunt reactor can be determined by the restriction of voltage of no-load line.
Optimization Configuration of High Voltage Reactors in Large Power Grid

Abstract:At present,high voltage (HV)reactors are mainly used to restrain the power frequency overvoltage and secondary arc current,not for the voltage control purpose.With the spreading and changing of power grid,part of HV reactors cannot be put into operation.In order to improve the use efficiency of assets,an optimization configuration method of HV reactor was proposed.Firstly,this method comprehensively considered the capacitance effect and power loss of transmission lines,as well as the existing inductive reactive power compensation degree of the two end stations of the lines;and set of alternative configuration schemes were designed for HV reactors.Then,a comprehensive evaluation system of reactive voltage was established for the configuration schemes of HV reactors with considering the maximum voltage fluctuation and deviation,average power loss,and switching action quantity of inactive power adjusting devices as evaluation indexes.A weighted method based on the variance of fuzzy memberships was introduced for a more scientific and objective optimal scheme decision strategy.Finally,combined with the configuration problem of HV reactors in Shaanxi power grid, the proposed method was proved to be effective and feasible.
On the DC Transient Overvoltage in the Converter Stations of ±800 Kv Xiluodu Zhexi HVDC Project

Abstract:For an UHVDC power system,the over-voltage level of its converter stations impacts directly on the insulation coordination of the stations equipments and the reliability of the system operation.With Xiluo-Zhexi ±800 kV UHVDC transmission project as an object,this paper makes simulations on various typical fault conditions such as ground fault on the valve side of HV/LV converter transformer,phase-to-phase switching impulse from AC side,full-voltage starting and DC line fault,resulting in the maximum values of over-voltage and energy for related arresters in Xiluodu and Zhexi stations,and thus providing basis for the insulation coordination design of the station equipments as well as their type selection,manufacture and test.
Research on transient overvoltage for converter station of Zhoushan multi-terminal VSC-HVDC project

Abstract:Zhoushan multi-terminal VSC-HVDC project will be the first DC transmission project with five converter stations in the world which is based on modular multilevel converter (MMC) technology. To study the overvoltage of each converter station, overvoltage mechanism of AC and DC switchyard are analyzed in detail based on this project, and overvoltage levels in typical faults such as single-phase-to-ground fault at the valve side of converter transformer and at the valve side of converter reactor, DC pole line ground fault, ground fault at the valve side of DC smoothing reactor and DC to DC pole line fault are calculated based on the MMC-HVDC model with five stations. Results show that the maximum overvoltage for AC bus at the valve side of converter transformer is 360 kV;the maximum overvoltage for DC bus at the line side and at the valve side of the DC smoothing reactor are 370 kV and 369 kV respectively; the maximum overvoltage of the neutral point of star reactance grounded branch and converter reactor are 188 kV and 235 kV respectively;the maximum energy of arrester CB and D are 1.258 MJ and 1.655 MJ respectively. The research results will provide important basis for the insulation coordination of station devices.
Research on Converter Valve Overvoltage Mechanism and Calculation Conditions of ± 800 Kv Converter Station

Abstract:The thyristor converter valve is the key equipment of commutation in ultra high voltage direct current (UHVDC) transmission systems. Owing to the limited voltage and current overload capacity, any transient overvoltage may cause permanent damage to the thyristor converter valve. In order to specify the converter valves' overvoltage levels of the ±800 kV UHVDC transmission system, the mechanisms of its generation and development are discussed in detail, from which the calculation conditions for the highest stresses of the converter valves are given. Finally, the converter valve's overvoltage of Xiluodu UHV converter station is simulated. The research results show that the overvoltages of the converter valves in the upper 3-pulse group of the high voltage(HV) and low voltage(LV) 12-pulse converter are generated jointly by the DC line voltage and the converter transformer's voltage at its valve side. Calculation conditions for this overvoltage are: DC system in bipolar operation mode, converter station operating as rectifier, maximum DC system operating voltage, minimum DC current, minimum AC system voltage of the converter station. Furthermore, the other converter valves' overvoltage is caused by the phase-to-phase switching surge generated at the converter station's AC side, penetrating into the valve hall. Overall, the maximum overvoltages of Xiluodu converter station in the upper 3-pulse group of the HV and LV 12-pulse converter are 379.1 kV and 384.9 kV, for other converter valves the maximum overvoltage is 375.3 kV.
Study on Transient Overvoltage of Zhexi Converter Station of ±800 Kv DC Power Transmission Project

Abstract:The transient overvltage and load of arresters in Zhexi converter statiom for ±800 kV DC power transmission project from Xiluodu to Zhexi are simulated and analyzed in details. To carry out this research, following fault conditions are chosen： three typical faults in AC system, i.e., three-phase ground fault of AC bus, interphase switching surge in AC system and losing AC power source, and three typical faults in DC system, i.e., single-phase ground fault occurred at upper rectifier bridge side of wye-wye connected winding of converter transformer, single-phase ground fault occurred at lower rectifier bridge side of wye-wye connected winding of converter transformer and full-voltage starting. Research results show that the losing AC power source is the most severe fault condition of AC system, under which the overvoltage of AC bus is 771 kV, the maximum current passing through arrester of AC bus is 0.14 kA and the maximum energy entering arrester is 2.07 MJ; when single-phase ground fault occurs at upper rectifier bridge side of wye-wye connected winding of converter transformer, the overvoltage cross the rectifier bridge is 375 kV, the maiximum current passing through the valve arrester is 2.32 kA and the maiximum energy entering the arrester is 6.73 MJ; when single-phase ground fault occurs at lower rectifier bridge side of wye-wye connected winding of converter transformer, the maximum current passing through the valve arrester is 1.04 kA and the maiximum energy entering arrester is 2.84 MJ; the overvoltage appears on DC polar bus caused by full-voltage starting, is 1 330 kV, the mamimum current passing through polar bus arrester is 0.56 kA and the maximum energy entering the arrester is 4.35 MJ.

Abstract:As one of the most important reactive power compensation equipment,the configuration of the high-voltage reactor determines the safety and stability of UHV system.So the application range of high-voltage reactor's compensation mode has been studied.Results show that single-junction compensation mode is suitable for two kinds of lines:the transposed lines only one of whose endpoint throw-off can cause excessive power frequency overvoltage,and transposed lines whose power frequency over-voltage is within the limit but secondary arc current exceeds the limit.Two-junction compensation mode can restrict the power frequency over-voltage caused by load throw-off at both endpoints of line.Sectional compensation can be used in lines more than 550 km in length.The systematic determination of high-voltage reactor compensation program is given and explained with the practical example.This method considers the power frequency overvoltage restriction,and also gives attention to the requirements of the secondary arc limit,no-load voltage controlling,resonance overvoltage prevention,high-voltage reactor standardization,and reactive power balance when transmitting high power is considered.
Single-phase grounding overvoltage of long-distance UHVAC lines

Abstract:The influencing factors of single-phase grounding overvoltage are analyzed and the conditions causing the maximum overvoltage are obtained. With different compensation degrees of HV shunt reactor and different disposals of MOA(Metal Oxide Arrester), the maximum length of UHVAC line is discussed for different segment modes, under which the single-phase grounding overvoltage will not surpass the limitation. The effect of MOA on overvoltage suppression is compared with that of HV shunt reactor, which shows the latter has better effectiveness. For three-segment lines, the maximum total line length may reach 1300 km while that of single segment may reach 500 km. For four-segment and five-segment lines, the maximum total line length may reach 1400 km and 1600 km respectively while that of single segment may reach 400 km.
Overvoltage Mechanism of Converter Valves for HVDC Power Transmission Project from Tianshengqiao to Guangzhou

Abstract:Based on the HVDC power transmission project from Tianshengqiao to Guangzhou the mechanism leading to converter valve overvotage is analyzed and analysis results show that overvoltage will appear at both terminals of the valves under two conditions： the first one is that after turning-off all valves in uppermost layer of commutating group overvoltages appear at both terminals of the valves belonging to this layer, whereas when all valves belonging to other layers of commutating groups are turned-off there in general will not be overvotlages appearing at both terminals of these valves; the second one is that the switching surge due to interphase operation in AC-system will lead to higher overvoltage appearing at both terminals of valves. According to the analysis results, simulation analysis on two typical faults, namely the single-phase short-circuit occurred at upper-half rectifier bridge side of wye-wye connected winding of converter transformer and switching surge caused by interphase operation in AC-system, is performed. Simulation results show that when HVDC system is operated in minimum power transmission mode, the single-phase short-circuit fault occurred at upper-half rectifier bridge side of wye-wye connected winding of converter transformer will lead to higher overvotage at both terminals of valves while the energy passing through valve arrester reaches its maximum value, however, along with the increase of transmitted power the energy passing through valve arrester will decrease; in view of the fact that the transformation ratio of converter transformer configured in rectifier station is higher than that in inverter station, the swithching surge caused by interphase operations in AC system, which possess the same amplitude, will lead to relatively serious overvotlage appearing at both terminals ot converter valves in rectifier station.

Abstract:The present study analyzed the characteristics of switching overvoltage, and discussed in detail the main influencing factors and worst-case conditions of switching overvoltage in the ±1100-kV ultra-high-voltage direct-current (UHVDC) converter station. The results showed that ac bus overvoltage was produced by oscillation, and would not be a threat to the equipment in the converter station. The results also showed there were two cases for overvoltage on related valves. In the first case, the valve overvoltage was on converter valves in the upper three-pulse group of the 12-pulse converter, and was caused by the voltage difference between the dc line and ac bus at the valve side under a specific fault. In the second case, the overvoltage was on other valves, and was caused by a phase-to-phase switching surge that penetrated into the valve hall. Other results were that overvoltage on the dc bus was mainly caused by the full reflection of the wave, and overvoltage on the neutral bus was caused by high-voltage sources, such as the dc source creating stress on the neutral bus under specific faults, or the freewheeling current of the metal return line and the smoothing reactors.

Abstract:In order to specify the overvoltage and insulation level of equipments in ±1100 kV UHVDC converter stations, the arrester configuration scheme and some basic parameters for ±1100 kV Zhundong converter station are proposed. Overvoltage of equipments in AC system, valve hall, DC busbar, and neutral busbar are also calculated in accordance with the fundamental principles of arrester configuration for UHV converter stations and the existing experiences in insulation coordination of ±800 kV UHVDC converter stations. The work is done also for specifing insulation levels for ±1100 kV UHVDC converter stations of the ±1100 kV UHVDC power transmission project from Zhundong to Sichuan in China. Thus, the recommended insulation margins that determine the insulation levels of converter station equipments are proposed: the insulation margins for thyristor valves are 10%/10%/15% for switching impulse/lightning impulse/steer front impulse; the insulation levels of lighting and swtiching impulses are recommended as 2600 kV and 2150 kV respectively for 1100 kV DC buses, and as 2250 kV and 2100 kV respectively for equipments at the valve side of high-voltage Y/Y converter transformers.
Comparative Study on Measures to Limit Load-Rejection Opening Overvoltage of Long-Distance and Large-Capacity UHVAC Transmission Lines

Abstract:Based on the model of long-distance and large-capacity UHVAC line with double-end source, two different methods are used to limit overvoltage and the economical evaluation of the two methods are given. One of them is increasing the number of average subsections of transmission line, namely the overvoltage is limited by only adopting metal oxide arrester (MOA) and HV shunt reactor when opening and closing resistors are not used, and the another one is to limit load-rejection opening overvoltage by adding opening and closing resistors to circuit breakers. Simulation results show that the maximum difference of opening overvoltage levels by the two limiting measures is about 0.04 p.u., so the effects of limiting overvoltage by the two methods are basically the same. Through the measure of increasing subsection number of transmission line the load-rejection opening overvoltage under single-phase earth fault can be limited, however the number of required switching stations is more, so the investment cost is high;through adding opening and closing resistors the same purpose of effectively limiting the overvoltage by lesser subsection number of transmission line can be achieved, meanwhile the number of switching stations can be reduced due to decreasing of the number of subsections of transmission line, so hundreds of millions RMB can be saved, and even the highest saved investment cost may be up to 1 billion RMB. Study results also show that the best value of opening resistor is within the range from 600Ωto 700Ω, thus to limit load-rejection overvoltage it is suitable for long-distance and large-capacity transmission lines to add opening and closing resistors.

Analysis on Overvoltage in Renovated Control and Protection System for HVDC Power Transmission Project from Tianshengqiao to Guangzhou

Abstract:System overvoltages in the renovated ±500 kV DC power transmission project from Tianshengqiao to Guangzhou under four typical fault conditions,i.e.,single-phase grounding occurred at upper-half rectifier bridge side of wye-wye connected winding of converter transformer,interphase switching surge from AC system,loss of AC power supply occurred at inverter side and inverter being blocked with unblocked bypass pairs,are analyzed and computed to ensure overvoltage at different positions in the grid as well as energy consumption of arresters can be restricted within rational ranges by renovated control and protection system,thus the secure operation of all power equipments can be implemented.Analysis results show that higher overvoltages will appear at neutral-bus due to single-phase grounding occurred at valve side of wye-wye connected winding of converter transformer,and the energy consumption of neutral-bus arrester will also be higher;higher overvoltage will appear at the terminals of rectifier valves due to interphase switching surge from AC system and it makes valve arrester operated;higher overvoltage will occur at AC bus of inverter station due to the loss of AC power supply at inverter side and it makes AC bus arrester operated;a rather high overvoltage will appear on DC polar line at inverter side due to inverter being blocked with unblocked bypass pairs and it makes a high energy consumption of arrester of DC polar line.The energy consumption of all arresters does not yet exceed the designed discharging capability under these four fault conditions,thus secure and stable operation of all arresters can be ensured.

Abstract:The mechanism of switching overvoltage occurred in the valve hall and DC switchyard of ��1100kV UHVDC converter station is analyzed based on Zhundong-Sichuan ��1100 kV UHVDC power transmission project. Different faults are simulated, such as the grounding fault of HV winding of Y/Y converter transformer at valve side, the grounding fault of LV winding of Y/Y converter transformer at valve side, the phase-to-phase switching surge at AC side, the AC power loss at inverter side, the full-voltage starting, the inverter blocking without by-pass de-blocking, and the corresponding overvoltages exerted on the equipments of converter station are calculated, which provide the reference for the type selection, test and insulation coordination of station equipments.
Analysis on Insulation Coordination Scheme for ±800 Kv DC Converter Station

Abstract:Insulation coordination of converter substation is one of key technologies in the implementation of ±800kV DC power transmission project. Based on two ±800kV DC power transmission projects being constructed in China, i.e., the DC power transmission project from Xiangjiaba to Shanghai and that from Yunnan to Guangdong, the features of insulation coordination for UHVDC converter substations are analyzed in the aspects of separate arrangement of split smoothing reactor and the configuration of lightning arresters. The economic and technical superiorities of the separate arrangement of split smoothing reactor in UHVDC power transmission are emphatically researched, and it is pointed out that the separate arrangement of split smoothing reactor will be the preferred arrangement of smoothing reactor in UHVAC converter stations. The arrangement of lightning arresters for above-mentioned two converter subsatations are given, and the protecting function of each arrester is described. Finally, the end-to-end protecting function of smoothing reactor connected with pole bus by parallel arresters, which is adopted in UHVAC projects, as well as the merits and defects of different protection modes adopted for at the valve side of wye-wye connected converter transformer in above-metioned two UHVDC proj ects are analyzed.

Abstract:Accidents occurred frequently in the 35 kV power system in recent years when vacuum breaker switched off shunt reactors.However,the reason is not clear.Through data statistics,detailed summary and analysis were carried out on the numerous results of field test.Statistic results shows that there can be 128 reignitions during a break operation,the three phase reignition process can last to 5 ms,the RRRV of the latter reignition phase can be as high as 13 kV/ms,the inter-phase overvoltage can beyond 8.0 pu and the phase to ground overvoltage can beyond 4.0 pu.The statistics results show that the main reason of such accidents is three phase multi-reignitiion and inter-phase overvoltage.Based on circuit theory,the mechanism of the whole process of the three phase multi-reignition was analyzed and revealed.The magnitude of the prospective transient recovery voltage is high enough to lead arc reignition,the high frequency current generated by the reignition can be coupled into the other two phases and cause forced arc extinguish.The magnitude and RRRV of the phase of forced arc extinguish are both extremely high,then excite the multi-reignition process andgenerate the inter-phase overvoltage which is twice in magnitude to phase to ground one.

Abstract:Based on the ±800 kV UHVDC project from Xiangjiaba to Shanghai,two typical faults for transient calculation of DC filter including ground fault on the DC line and incoming switching surge on the DC line are presented.The simulation steep-fronted models and factors including protective characteristics of arresters,parasitic inductances of DC bus and DC filter high voltage capacitor which should be considered for these two faults are introduced.The calculation results give the transient stresses for reactors and resistors.The protective levels of arresters are obtained according to the calculated maximum arrester currents,and the withstand levels of the filter equipments are defined at last according to the insulation margin.
