Abstract:Structural and electronic properties of single-walled TiO2 nanotubes were investigated using density-functional theory. The strain energies were computed as a function of tube diameter and the small-sized nanotubes are less stable than the large-diameter ones. All TiO2 nanotubes are semiconductors with indirect bandgaps independent of the tube chirality. The bandgaps of those nanotubes slightly increase with increase in tube diameter, and they are higher than that of the bulk TiO2 solid. The hydrogen-storage capacity for a selected TiO2 nanotube is 3.2wt% with the binding energy of 0.05eV per H2 molecule.
Free standing membranes to study the optical properties of anodic TiO2 nanotube layers

Abstract:In the present work we investigate various optical properties (such as light absorption and reflectance) of anodic TiO2 nanotubes layers directly transferred as self-standing membranes onto quartz substrates. This allows investigation in a transmission geometry which provides significantly more reliable data than measurements on the metallic Ti substrate. Light transmission and reflectance measurements were carried out for layers of thicknesses varying from 1.8 to 50 micrometer, and the layers were investigated in their amorphous and crystalline form. A series of wavelength-dependent light attenuation coefficients are extrapolated and found to match the photocurrent vs. irradiation wavelength behavior. However, a feature specific to anodic nanotubes is that their intrinsic carbon content causes a sub-bandgap response that is proportional to the carbon contamination content in the TiO2 nanotubes. Overall the extracted data provide valuable basis and understanding for the design of photo-electrochemical devices based on TiO2 nanotubes.
Electronic Structure of TiO2 Nanotube Arrays from X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure Studies

Abstract:We report an X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) investigation of several TiO2 nanotube arrays, including the as-prepared nanotube arrays from electrochemical anodic oxidation of Ti foil (as-prepared ATNTA), as-prepared nanotube arrays after annealing at 580 degrees C (annealed ATNTA) and annealed ATNTA after electrochemical intercalation with Li (Li-intercalated ATNTA). XANES at the O K-edge and Ti L-3,L-2 and K edges shows distinctly different spectral features for the as-prepared and the annealed ATNTA, characteristic of amorphous and anatase structures, respectively. Intercalation of Li into annealed ATNTA induces a surprising, yet spectroscopically unmistakable, anatase to rutile transition. XANES at the Li K-edge clearly shows ionic features of Li in ATNTA. The charge relocation from Ti 3d to O 2p at the conduction band in TiO2 was also observed when Li ions were intercalated into annealed ATNTA albeit no noticeable reduction of Ti4+ to Ti3+ was observed. The O K-edge shows a distinctly enhanced feature in the multiple scattering regime, indicating a close to linear O-Li-O arrangement in Li-intercalated ATNTA. These results show bonding changes between Ti and O resulting from the interaction of Li ions in the TiO2 lattices. Such bonding variation has also been supported by X-ray excited optical luminescence (XEOL), which suggests Li+-defect interactions. The implications of these results are discussed.

Abstract:Experimental studies of TiO2 nanotubes have been conducted for nearly three decades and have revealed the remarkable advantages of this material. Research based on computer simulations is much rarer, with research using density functional theory (DFT) being the most significant in this field. It should be noted, however, that this approach has significant limitations when studying the macroscopic properties of nanostructures such as nanosheets and nanotubes. An alternative with great potential has emerged: classical molecular dynamics simulations (MD). MD Simulations offer the possibility to study macroscopic properties such as the density of phonon states (PDOS), power spectra, infrared spectrum, water absorption and others. From this point of view, the present study focuses on the distinction between the phases of anatase and rutile TiO2. The LAMMPS package is used to study both the structural properties by applying the radial distribution function (RDF) and the electromagnetic properties of these phases. Our efforts are focused on exploring the effect of temperature on the vibrational properties of TiO2 anatase nanotubes and an in-depth analysis of how the phononic softening phenomenon affects TiO2 nanostructures to improve the fundamental understanding in different dimensions and morphological configurations. A careful evaluation of the stability of TiO2 nanolamines and nanotubes at different temperatures is performed, as well as the adsorption of water on the nanosurface of TiO2, using three different water models.

Abstract:Titanium dioxide nanotubes (TiO2 NTs) have been widely investigated in the past twenty years due to the variety of possible applications of this material. Indeed, their high surface area and tunable morphology can easily implement key features of TiO2, such as its biocompatibility and photo and electrocatalytic properties. This combination makes TiO2 NTs perfect candidates for multifunctional applications ranging from biomedical application to sensing and energy devices. Herein, we present TiO2 NTs grown by anodic oxidation on top of a titanium foil in an ethylene glycol based electrolyte with NH4F. The as‐grown amorphous nanotubes were then subjected to annealing in a reducing atmosphere at different temperatures while maintaining their amorphicity. The morphological, physico‐chemical and electronic properties were then thoroughly evaluated to assess their use in different fields, from energy storage devices to photocatalytical applications

Abstract:We present a detailed electron diffraction study of individual single-walled carbon nanotubes. A novel sample preparation procedure provides well-separated, long and straight individual single-shell nanotubes. Diffraction experiments are carried out at 60kV, below the threshold for knock-on damage in carbon nanotubes. We describe experimental parameters that allow single-tube electron diffraction experiments with widely available thermal emission transmission electron microscopes. Further, we review the simulation of diffraction patterns for these objects.
