Abstract:To enhance the detection sensitivity towards hydrogen, a novel point contact TiO2 nanotube decorated with PdxO Schottky barrier diode (SBD) was proposed and investigated in this paper. TiO2 nanotube arrays were fabricated on Ti wires by electrochemical anodic oxidation, and Pd catalytic nanoparticles were modified by micro-emulsion electrochemical deposition. The surface morphology was characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and the hydrogen sensitivity of the point contact between TiO2 nanotubes was investigated. It exhibited high sensitivity under working temperature of 70oC, and the sensitivity of SBD to 2000ppm hydrogen was about 8500. Impedance spectroscopy, the current–voltage (I-V) characteristic measurement and infrared spectroscopy were also employed for further mechanism investigation. From the I-V curves, we found the Schottky barrier was formed on the contact and the barrier height decreased with increase of hydrogen. The sensing processes of the charge transfer were unveiled according to the different time constants and that mechanism was in reasonable support of IR surface analysis. This information may provide some insight on the understanding of the device physics of this new emerging nanotube array based SBD which will have broaden application in hydrogen energy and related security system.
Electrochemical sensor for detection of hydrazine based on Au@Pd core-shell nanoparticles supported on amino-functionalized TiO2 nanotubes

Abstract:In this paper, we reported a simple strategy for synthesizing well-defined TiO2NTs-Au@Pd hybrid nanostructures with prior TiO2 nanotube functionalization (F-TiO2NTs). TiO2NTs with larger surface area (BET surface area is 184.9m(2)g(-1)) were synthesized by hydrothermal method, and the NTs are anatase phase with a range of 2-3μm in length and 30-50nm in diameter after calcined at 400°C for 3h. 3-Aminopropyl-trimethoxysilane (APTMS) as a coupling agent was reacted with the surface hydroxyl groups as anchoring sites for flower-shaped bimetallic Au@Pd nanostructures, self-assembling amine functionality on the surface of TiO2NTs. Note that two faces at the interface between F-TiO2NTs with (004) plane and Au@Pd nanostructures with (111) one of cubic Au and Pd nanoparticles are compatible, benefiting to the charge transfer between two components due to their crystalline coordination. The results showed that as-prepared F-TiO2NTs-Au@Pd hybrid nanostructures modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) exhibits high electrocatalytic activity toward hydrazine (N2H4) at low potential and a linear response from 0.06 to 700μM with the detection limit for N2H4 was found to be 1.2×10(-8)M (S/N=3). Based on scan rate effect during the hydrazine oxidation, it indicates that the number of electrons transferred in the rate-limiting step is 1, and a transfer coefficient (α) is estimated as 0.73. The self-assembled F-TiO2NTs-Au@Pd hybrid nanostructures as enhanced materials present excellent electrocatalytic activity, fast response, highly sensitive and have a promising application potential in nonenzymatic sensing.

Abstract:A novel composite hydrogen sensor, consisting of Pd nanoclusters/TiO2 nanotube arrays, was fabricated and evaluated at room temperature. The Pd nanoclusters layer was deposited on top surface of the nanotube arrays by using a direct current (DC) magnetron sputtering method. Resistive response of the composite sensors to 0.5% hydrogen was measured. Experimental results indicated that the Pd nanoclusters can quickly and continually form or break multiple passages by absorbing or desorbing hydrogen, so that the composite hydrogen sensors have promising hydrogen sensitivity at room temperature.

Abstract:A dye-sensitized TiO2 nanotube array (DST) was fabricated by electrochemical anodization in an aqueous organic electrolyte and immersed into ethanol containing N719 dye. The crystal phase and microstructure of the TiO2 nanotube array (TNTA) were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). The UV-Vis spectra of the DST were characterized by diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS). The hydrogen sensitivity of the as-prepared sample was tested at room temperature under Xe-lamp (simulated solar light) irradiation. It was found that the sensor was highly sensitive to low concentrations of hydrogen as an application in air quality control.
A Novel CO Sensor Based on the Point Contact Between Pd Decorated TiO2 Nanotubes Array

Abstract:To obtain a high sensitive CO sensor, a new nanostructure based on the point contact between Pd decorated TiO2 nanotubes was proposed in this paper. TiO2 nanotubes array was fabricated on titanium wire by electrochemical anodic oxidation, and Pd catalytic nanoparticles were modified by the micro-emulsion electrochemical deposition. The surface morphology was characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and CO sensitivity of the point contact between TiO2 nanotubes was investigated through the current-voltage (I-V) characteristic measurement. It was found that Pd epitaxially grew along the tube walls, and they were distributed on the surface of the nanotubes. The point contact based sensor between Pd decorated TiO2 nanotubes exhibited a strong temperature dependent sensitivity towards CO. From the I-V curves, we found the Schottky barrier was formed on the contact and the barrier height was also calculated.

Abstract:Titania (TiO2) nanotubes array is a new kind of hydrogen (H-2) sensing materials due to its unique structure, the device physics on the metal-semiconductor contact, however, is still scarce so far. In this present work, TiO2 nanotubes with diameter of 140 nm and tubular thickness of 25 nm were grown on titanium substrate using anodic oxidation in an aqueous ethylene glycol electrolyte containing 0.5 wt% NH4F. The influence of reverse bias voltage on the H-2 sensing properties of such geometric TiO2 nanotubes based Schottky sensors was investigated. It was found that the contacts between gold (Au) and TiO2 nanotubes array demonstrated typical rectifying characteristic, and the barrier height decreased with the increase of hydrogen concentration. The signals of such device increased almost linearly up to a local-maximum by increasing the applied reverse bias voltage, while little improvement on gas sensitivity was observed with further increase of the applied reverse bias voltage. Based on the analysis of impedance and device characteristic, we supposed that the reverse bias voltage dependent hydrogen sensing was mainly attributed to the change of the Schottky barrier height which was intrinsically determined by the Au-TiO2 configuration, in which the thickness of the tube wall and the contact interface may govern the device sensing characteristic. Abstract:Doping of titania nanotubes is one of the efficient way to obtain improved physical and chemical properties. Through electrochemical anodization and annealing treatment, Ni-doped TiO2 nanotube arrays were fabricated and their hydrogen sensing performance was investigated. The nanotube sensor demonstrated a good sensitivity for wide-range detection of both dilute and high-concentration hydrogen atmospheres ranging from 50 ppm to 2% H2. A temperature-dependent sensing from 25°C to 200°C was also found. Based on the experimental measurements and first-principles calculations, the electronic structure and hydrogen sensing properties of the Ni-doped TiO2 with an anatase structure were also investigated. It reveals that Ni substitution of the Ti sites could induce significant inversion of the conductivity type and effective reduction of the bandgap of anatase oxide. The calculations also reveal that the resistance change for Ni-doped anatase TiO2 with/without hydrogen absorption was closely related to the bandgap especially the Ni-induced impurity level.

Abstract:Hydrogen (H2) molecules are easy to leak during production, storage, transportation and usage. Because of their flammability and explosive nature, quick and reliable dectection of H2 molecule is of great significance. Herein, an excellent H2 gas sensor has been realized based on Pd nanocrystal sensitized two-dimensional (2D) porous TiO2 (Pd/TiO2). The formation of 2D porous TiO2 with the removal of graphene oxide template has been monitored by an in-situ transmission electron microscope. It is found that the size of the GO template can be almost completely replicated by 2D TiO2. The Pd/TiO2 sensor exhibited an instantaneous response and a satisfactory low detection limit for H2 detection. These excellent gas-sensing performances (good selectivity, unique linearity response and high stability) can be attributed to the unique 2D porous structure and the synergistic effect between oxidized Pd and TiO2, including the unique adsorption properties of O2 or/and H2 on Pd/TiO2, the reaction between PdO and H2 gas, and the regulated depletion layer arising from p-type PdO to n-type TiO2. This work demonstrates a rational design and synthesis of highly efficient H2 sensitive materials for energy and manufacturing security.

Abstract:Low-concentration H2 detection is of significance due to its major concern for safety in practical applications. However, semiconductor chemiresistive gas sensors always suffer from high operating temperature and power consumption, as well as a limited range of concentration detection, which restricts their widespread use. Herein, we developed a 3D nanostructured gas sensor employing Pd nanoclusters decorated SnO2 nanotube array as the sensing layer. The sensor shows sensitive and selective properties for low-concentration H2 detection at room temperature, and the limit of detection was down to 1.6 ppb. It also shows good long-term stability as long as 100 days. Moreover, systematical characterizations are performed in conjunction with density functional theory (DFT) calculations to determine the impact of Pd/SnO2 junctions on the gas-sensing properties improvement. The engineering of the nano-Schottky junction allows us to expand the library for designing low-power consumption H2 sensors for wide applications.

Abstract:In this letter, a Schottky diode ultraviolet (UV) detector based on $\hbox{TiO}_{2}$ nanowire (NW) array with Ag electrode is fabricated. The $\hbox{TiO}_{2}$ NW array was prepared via a low-temperature hydrothermal method and characterized by means of X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, and XPS. The Schottky barrier character of $\hbox{Ag/TiO}_{2}$ contact was researched in detail. At −5-V bias, the dark current of the detector was less than 35 nA. Under the irradiation of 350-nm UV light, a high responsivity of 3.1 A/W was achieved due to the internal gain. The Schottky diode detector with simple fabrication process, low cost, and superior performance would provide a new way in fabricating UV imaging arrays.

Abstract:Hydrogen sensors with fast response and recovery rate based on nanoporous palladium (Pd) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) composite films supported by anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) template have been demonstrated. Nanoporous TiO2 film was sprayed on the porous AAO templates, followed by Pd film deposited on TiO2 layer by DC magnetron sputtering. We have researched the detection performance of the hydrogen sensors depending on different thickness of TiO2 layer from 6 to 30 nm with keeping the thickness of Pd as 30 nm. The results have demonstrated the sensors with 10 nm thickness of TiO2 achieve the best performance with a response/recovery time as short as 4/8s at 0.8% and 0.4% hydrogen concentration, respectively. Abstract:In this paper, a kind of novel TiO2 nanotube arrays (TNTs) hybrid structure was presented to improve the performance of hydrogen sensors. In this novel structure, palladium functionalized TNTs hybrid nanostructure supported on titanium wire. TNTs arrays was prepared by anodizing Ti wire using a standard electrochemical procedure. Pd nanomaterials were deposited on TNTs. Optimized experiments showed the hydrogen sensor supported on titanium wire showed a good response time of 8 s and high sensitivity of 94.8% at 1.9 vol% H2 at room temperature (25 °C). The research work revealed potential good hydrogen sensitivity of this kind of hybrid nanostructure.

Abstract:Polydopamine (PDA) coating was prepared on TiO2 nanotubes array by dip-coating method to improve the photocathodic protection performance of TiO2. The morphology, crystal structure, valence state and elemental composition of the 2 were characterized. The electrochemical tests of open-circuit potential (OCP) and photocurrent density curves were used to characterize their photocathodic protection effects for 304 stainless steels (304SS). The result shows that the TiO2 combined with PDA can effectively prevent the corrosion of 304SS under visible light irradiation. Moreover, through stability test and immersion test, the sample has good stability and it also has protective effect for 304SS in the dark state.

Abstract:TiO2 nanotubes have wide applications in gas sensing applications such as oxygen sensors and hydrogen sensors. In this work, crystallized TiO2 nanotubes self-assembled on Ti substrate were fabricated through anodization and heat-treatment. The anodization parameters for fabricating optimized nanostructures were investigated and hydrogen sensing properties of the nanotubes were tested. It was found that the anodization temperature and voltage had a great impact on the formation of uniform nanotubes or nanostructures. And the nanotubes assembled on Cu-coated PCB demonstrated a good hydrogen sensing properties at room temperature.

Abstract:Hydrogen sensors with a novel composite structure comprised of Pd nanorings distributed on TiO2 nanotube arrays were developed and tested. Effect of the TiO2 nanotube diameter size, Pd nanorings thickness on the sensors' hydrogen response characteristics were investigated. Time dependence of resistance of the Pd nanorings/TNTs composite structure on various hydrogen concentrations was also carried out and demonstrated good room temperature hydrogen sensitive characteristics. Optimized experiments demonstrated that the hydrogen sensor composed of 25 nm-thickness Pd nanorings distributed on the 77 nm-diameter size TiO2 nanotube showed a fast response time (3.8 s) and high sensitivity (92.05%) at 0.8 vol% H-2. A hydrogen sensitive characteristics model is proposed and the Pd nanorings' important role in the hydrogen sensitive mechanisms is described. The hydrogen sensor's excellent hydrogen sensitive characteristics is ascribed to the Pd nanorings' quick and continual formation and breakage of multiple passages due to absorption and desorption of hydrogen atoms. Hydrogen Sensing with Ni-Doped TiO2 Nanotubes

Abstract:Doping with other elements is one of the efficient ways to modify the physical and chemical properties of TiO2 nanomaterials. In the present work, Ni-doped TiO2 nanotubes were fabricated through anodic oxidation of NiTi alloy and further annealing treatment. The hydrogen sensing properties of the nanotube sensor were investigated. It was found that the Ni-doped TiO2 nanotubes were sensitive to an atmosphere of 1,000 ppm hydrogen, showing a good response at both room temperature and elevated temperatures. A First-Principle simulation revealed that, in comparison with pure anatase TiO2 oxide, Ni doping in the TiO2 oxide could result in a decreased bandgap. When the oxide sensor adsorbed a certain amount of hydrogen the bandgap increased and the acceptor impurity levels was generated, which resulted in a change of the sensor resistance.

Abstract:Anatase-type titania nanotubes doped with Nb element were fabricated through an anodization of Ti35Nb alloy substrate and further annealing at 450 degrees C. Hydrogen sensitivity of the Nb-doped TiO2 nanotubes at room temperature was investigated through exposure of the nanotube samples to different hydrogen atmospheres. At room temperature, the Nb-doped nanotubes demonstrated a good sensitivity for wide-range detection of both dilute and high-concentration hydrogen atmospheres ranging from 50 ppm to 2% H-2. The Nb-doped nanotubes also presented remarkable reversibility and repeatability as well as a quick response to the hydrogen atmosphere. The Nb-doped titania nanotubes have great advantages as robust and wide-range hydrogen sensors operating at room temperature.

Abstract:Organic/inorganic heterojunction photoanodes are appealing for making concurrent use of the highly photoactive organic semiconductors, and the efficient dielectric screening provided by their inorganic counterparts. In the present work, organic/inorganic nanotube heterojunction arrays composed of TiO2 nanotube arrays and a semiconducting N,N-(dicyclohexyl) perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic diimide (PDi) layer were fabricated for photoelectrochemical water splitting. In this arrayed architecture, a PDi layer with a tunable thickness was coated on anodic TiO2 nanotube arrays by physical vapor deposition, which is advantageous for the formation of a uniform layer and an adequate interface contact between PDi and TiO2. The obtained PDi/TiO2 junction exhibited broadened visible light absorption, and an effective interface for enhanced photogenerated electron-hole separation, which is supported by the reduced charge transfer resistance and prolonged excitation lifetime via impedance spectroscopy analysis and fluorescence emission decay investigations. Consequently, such a heterojunction photoanode was photoresponsive to a wide visible light region of 400-600 nm, and thus demonstrated a highly enhanced photocurrent density at 1.23 V vs. a reversible hydrogen electrode. Additionally, the durability of such a photoanode can be guaranteed after long-time illumination because of the geometrical restraint imposed by the PDi aggregates. These results pave the way to discover new organic/inorganic assemblies for high-performance photoelectric applications and device integration.
Significantly Enhanced Photoresponse in Carbon Nanotube Film/tio2nanotube Array Heterojunctions by Pre-Electroforming

Abstract:Traditional TiO2 based photodetectors (PDs) suffer from high dark resistance, which increases loss of photoexcited charge carriers. Here, we report a new and simple way to improve the performance of PDs based on double-walled carbon nanotube (DWCNT)/TiO2 nanotube heterojunctions. Highly ordered TiO2 nanotube arrays were fabricated using a two-step anodic oxidation method, and coated with a DWCNT film, which functioned as a semitransparent electrode and a photoactive layer. Via pre-electroforming, the device was switched from a high resistance state (HRS) to a low resistance state (LRS). At an applied bias of 1 V, the dark resistance was reduced from 926 to 0.67 k Omega, as a result of the formation of oxygen vacancy related conducting filaments. The photoresponse (Delta I=D I-p-I-d, where Ip and Id represents photocurrent and dark current, respectively) of the PD in LRS reached 816.76 mu A W-1 under 532 nm laser illumination and 802.89 mu A W-1 under 1064 nm laser irradiation, which is 965 and 3980 times higher, respectively, than those obtained from the HRS device under the same conditions. This strategy for enhancing the photoresponse of TiO2 based PDs may have applications in further improving the power conversion efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells.

Abstract:Novel CdS quantum dots (QDs) sensitized TiO2 nanotube-array photoelectrodes were investigated for their photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance. The highly ordered TiO2 nanotube arrays were synthesized by anodic oxidation and CdS QDs were deposited into the pores of the nanotube arrays by a sequential chemical bath deposition method. It is found that the CdS QDs deposited in the pores of the TiO2 nanotube arrays may significantly increase the liquid junction PEC short circuit photocurrent (from 0.22 to 7.82 mA/cm(2)) and cell efficiency (up to 4.15%). These results clearly demonstrate that the unique nanotube structure can facilitate the propagation and kinetic separation of photogenerated charges, suggesting potentially important applications of the inorganic QDs sensitized TiO2 nanotube-array films in solar cell applications.
