Abstract:Here we show how a high-resolution transmission electron microscopy can be applied to characterize the carbon nanostructures. Direct imaging of the hexagonal network of carbon nanotube enables us to determine the chiral index and to visualize the topological defects, such as pentagons and heptagons. Individual molecular imaging has also become possible, and atomic structure of fullerene molecules (C-60 and C-80) has been successfully identified at a single-molecular basis. Some recent progress for in situ observation of the carbon nanotube/fullerene growth and the defect dynamics is also presented.

Abstract:Catalyst-free inner growth of single-wall carbon nanotubes has been directly realized and monitored by means of in situ high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, with particular attention paid to the evolution of the cap shape. The cap of a carbon nanotube is surprisingly found to be kept closed during the growing/shrinking process, and the cap shape evolves inhomogeneously with a few particular sites growing faster during the growth, while the cap of a carbon nanotube keeps a round shape during the shrinkage process. The closed cap should be specific for noncatalytic growth of carbon nanotubes. We infer, from the results above, the possible atomistic mechanism and how the carbon network can accommodate or release the carbon atoms during the growth/shrinkage of carbon nanotubes.

Abstract:Electron field emission characteristics of individual multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were investigated in situ inside the transmission electron microscope (TEM). For a single MWCNT it was found that while field-emission can hardly occur from the side of the nanotube, a curved nanotube may result in finite side emission and the best emission geometry is the top emission geometry. Current–voltage (I–V) measurements made at different vacuum conditions and voltage sweeps emphasize the importance of the adsorbates on the electron field emission of MWCNTs. For a contaminated MWCNT, although the field emission current was reduced, the stability of its emission was improved. A current of up to several tens of μA was observed for a single MWCNT, but it was found that long time emission usually results in drastic structure damage that may lead to sudden emission failure.

Abstract:The failure of individual multiwall carbon nanotubes (CNTs) during electron field emission was investigated in situ inside the transmission electron microscope (TEM). Long time emission of a single CNT at the level of tens µA or higher may lead to unrecoverable damage to the CNT. High-resolution TEM observations of the emission failure process shown that the failure was usually companied by structure damage or break of the CNT, and the failure or degradation of the emission characteristics of the CNT was typically initiated at the CNT/substrate contact, defect site or at the open end via the field evaporation or oxidation of the tip of the CNT.
Quantitative analysis of electron field-emission characteristics of individual carbon nanotubes: The importance of the tip structure

Abstract:Electron field-emission measurements on individual carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were performed inside the transmission electron microscope (TEM). The field-emission characteristics of CNTs with different tip structures were compared, and their field conversion factor and emission area were studied systematically. It was found that the field-emission characteristics of a CNT depend sensitively on its tip structure, and in particular an opened CNT was shown to be superior to a capped CNT. High-resolution TEM observations revealed that the tip of an opened CNT may, in general, be regarded as being composed of irregular shaped graphitic sheets, and these graphitic sheets have been found to improve dramatically the field-emission characteristics, but the sharp edge may result in larger error in the calculated emission area. The influence of uncertainty in the work function of the CNTs on the field conversion factor and emission area calculation was also investigated.

Abstract:We report here a shell-by-shell formation of carbon onion by means of in situ high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. An innermost fullerene seed first forms and acts as the central nucleation core to produce a multishell carbon polygon. Then, the carbon polygon can be further transformed to the carbon onions in a controllable manner through the so-called "hot shrinkage" process.

Abstract:The temperature-dependent transverse mechanical properties of single-walled nanotubes are studied using a molecular mechanics approach. The stretching and bond angle force constants describing the mechanical behavior of the sp(2) bonds are resolved in the temperature range between 0 and 1600 K, allowing to identify a temperature dependence of the nanotubes wall thickness. We observe a decrease of the stiffness properties (axial and shear Young's modulus) with increasing temperatures, and an augmentation of the transverse Poisson's ratio, with magnitudes depending on the chirality of the nanotube. Abstract:In this paper, the electron diffraction technique to determine the helicity and atomic structure of carbon nanotubes is reviewed, as well as different mechanical test methods, tensile test, bending test, compression test and vibration test of carbon nanotubes by in situ electron microscopy are summarized while the relationship between mechanical properties and structures revealed by experiments is addressed. Except for these, the electric current and electron beam irradiation effect and some other novel electron microscopy experiments are also incorporated.

Abstract:We demonstrate here a novel method for performing in situ mechanical, electrical and electromechanical measurements on individual thin carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by using nanomanipulators inside a scanning electron microscope. The method includes three key steps: picking up an individual thin CNT from a substrate, connecting the CNT to a second probe or an atomic force microscope cantilever for the measurements and placing the CNT onto a holey carbon film on a transmission electron microscope grid for further structure characterization. With the method, Young’s modulus, the breaking strength and the effects of axial strain on electrical transport properties of individual thin CNTs can be studied. As examples, the mechanical, electrical and electromechanical properties of a double-walled CNT (DWCNT) and a single-walled CNT (SWCNT) were measured. We observed a strain-induced metallic-to-semiconducting transition of the DWCNT and a bandgap increase of the SWCNT. More importantly, the electromechanical properties of the SWCNT were correlated to its chirality determined by electron diffraction. The method enables us to relate mechanical, electrical and electromechanical properties of the measured thin CNTs to their atomic structures.

Abstract:Points of view: The nucleation points of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are visualized on the atomic scale. The atomic structure of both the catalysts and the SWNTs growing from them are seen by HRTEM (see Figure) for the first time. The growth pathway extracted from a TEM image sequence demonstrates a root mechanism in SWNT growth. A best assignment of (31,14) for the chirality is obtained by means of inverse fast Fourier transform (IFFT) analysis.

Abstract:We present a comprehensive optical spectroscopic study on air-suspended single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with diameters ranging from 1.7 nm to 3.4 nm and at higher-order optical transitions, a previously inaccessible regime. We establish an atlas of resonant radial breathing modes (RBMs) for more than 100 new SWNTs in this unknown regime, thus significantly extending the RBM dataset in Kataura plot and enhancing our knowledge of SWNTs. Additionally, we develop an innovative transfer technique for manipulating individual SWNTs of known chiralities (determined by optical spectroscopies) by integrating a polarization imaging technique with the conventional van der Waals (vdW) dry transfer. The unprecedented spatial and structural control of this technique enables a deterministic fabrication and integration of a variety of novel mixed-dimensional vdW heterostructures that were considered unachievable before. Our work significantly extends RBM dataset of SWNT Kataura plot and represents a huge advancement towards controlled fabrication and integration of mixed-dimensional vdW heterostructures encompassing one-dimensional vdW materials.

Abstract:Tensile loading and pullouts of individual multi-walled BNNTs were studied for the first time by in-situ tests in the integrated HRTEM-AFM setup. Most important mechanical parameters, such as the ultimate tensile strength and strain, maximum sustainable load and the Young's modulus of tubes, were measured. Under parallel HRTEM observations the measured mechanical parameters were correlated to experimental conditions and tube structures.

Abstract:Cross-sectional structural features of carbon nanotubes have been investigated by high resolution electron microscopy (HREM). Carbon nanotube-bundles with 0.2–0.6 mm in diameter and 5–10 mm in length were produced by means of an arc-discharge method, which is suitable for preparing TEM cross-sectional samples of carbon nanotubes. Our HREM observations have shown that most of carbon nanotubes have a polyhedral and elliptical shape in a cross section, and there are many defects in the microstructure of carbon nanotubes, including edge-type dislocations and variable spacing between adjacent tube sheets, revealing that the seamless cylindric and scroll-shaped graphene sheets co-exist within the same nanotube. The abnormal structure features are closely related to the non-equilibrium growth conditions of carbon nanotubes in the arc-discharge process, and also to the accommodations of various strains taking place simultaneously in tube sheets.

Abstract:Two paramount challenges in carbon nanotube research are achieving chirality-controlled synthesis and understanding chirality-dependent device physics. High-throughput and in-situ chirality and electronic structural characterization of individual carbon nanotubes is crucial for addressing these challenges. Optical imaging and spectroscopy has unparalleled throughput and specificity, but its realization for single nanotubes on substrates or in devices has long been an outstanding challenge. Here we demonstrate video-rate imaging and in-situ spectroscopy of individual carbon nanotubes on various substrates and in functional devices using a novel high-contrast polarization-based optical microscopy. Our technique enables the complete chirality profiling of hundreds of as-grown carbon nanotubes. In addition, we in-situ monitor nanotube electronic structure in active field-effect devices, and observe that high-order nanotube optical resonances are dramatically broadened by electrostatic doping. This unexpected behaviour points to strong interband electron-electron scattering processes that can dominate ultrafast dynamics of excited states in carbon nanotubes.

Abstract:<p>The in situ manipulation and property investigation of individual one-dimensional (1-D) nanomaterials (such as nanowires, nanotubes and 1-D heterostructures) as well as the construction of nanodevices based on these nanomaterials that have potential vital applications have become the focus of researchers worldwide. In recent years, the studies on these nanostructures have mainly shifted to three aspects of in-situ manipulation, property investigation and application exploration. The high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) equipped with an atomic force microscope (AFM) or a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) holder, and a heating/cooling holder has already developed as the most advanced technology capable of implementing in situ manipulation on and probing physical properties of nano-objects. In this review, we will summarize the significant developments in regards to the on-demand manipulation, thermal, mechanical, and electrical property investigations of 1-D nanomaterials as well as exploring their applications in piezoelectrical devices, lithium ion batteries and field emission devices. The highlight here is that inside a transmission electron microscope (TEM), the thermal, mechanical and electrical transport data are acquired in real time with three-dimensional (3-D) manipulation on one particular nano-object and can thus reflect the dynamic morphological, structural and chemical changes of a given nanomaterial.</p>
