Abstract:The temperature-dependent transverse mechanical properties of single-walled nanotubes are studied using a molecular mechanics approach. The stretching and bond angle force constants describing the mechanical behavior of the sp(2) bonds are resolved in the temperature range between 0 and 1600 K, allowing to identify a temperature dependence of the nanotubes wall thickness. We observe a decrease of the stiffness properties (axial and shear Young's modulus) with increasing temperatures, and an augmentation of the transverse Poisson's ratio, with magnitudes depending on the chirality of the nanotube. Abstract:The carbon nanotube (CNT) is a compelling and promising material for industrial applications requiring high strength and rigidity. For a multi-walled CNT (MWCNT), the nominal tensile strength and Young's modulus (considering the whole cross-sectional area of the specimen) are key mechanical factors for the practical application of macroscopic fibers and composites. However, the nominal tensile strength and Young's modulus of MWCNTs are much lower than their effective tensile strength and Young's modulus (considering the fracture cross-sectional area) because the outermost graphite layer always fractures first due to the low cross-link between graphite layers. In this paper, we fabricated the carbon nanofibers (CNFs) by epitaxial growth on super-aligned MWCNT film template and conducted in situ uniaxial tensile tests on individual carbon-nanotube-templated CNFs. The individual CNFs show improved nominal mechanical performance than previously reported MWCNTs. The nominal mechanical properties enhancement of the CNFs is attributed to the effective control on load transfer between interwalls.

Abstract:A combination of optical microscopy and DSCM is used to measure the young's modulus and tensile strength of single-wall carbon nanotubes by directly pulling long strands of single-wall carbon nanotubes bundles. The fracture process of the long strands of single-wall carbon nanotubes bundles is observed. The nanotubes bundles are synthesized by the catalytic pyrolysis of n-hexane with an enhanced vertical floating technique. The average young's modulus and tensile strength obtained are 129.0±70.3GPa and 1.95±0.56GPa, respectively, which are lower than those calculated and measured previously. The factors that affect the mechanical strengths of nanotubes are discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, the electron diffraction technique to determine the helicity and atomic structure of carbon nanotubes is reviewed, as well as different mechanical test methods, tensile test, bending test, compression test and vibration test of carbon nanotubes by in situ electron microscopy are summarized while the relationship between mechanical properties and structures revealed by experiments is addressed. Abstract:The tensile strengths of individual multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were measured with a “nanostressing stage” located within a scanning electron microscope. The tensile-loading experiment was prepared and observed entirely within the microscope and was recorded on video. The MWCNTs broke in the outermost layer (“sword-in-sheath” failure), and the tensile strength of this layer ranged from 11 to 63 gigapascals for the set of 19 MWCNTs that were loaded. Analysis of the stress-strain curves for individual MWCNTs indicated that the Young's modulus E of the outermost layer varied from 270 to 950 gigapascals. Transmission electron microscopic examination of the broken nanotube fragments revealed a variety of structures, such as a nanotube ribbon, a wave pattern, and partial radial collapse.

Abstract:Tensile loading and pullouts of individual multi-walled BNNTs were studied for the first time by in-situ tests in the integrated HRTEM-AFM setup. Most important mechanical parameters, such as the ultimate tensile strength and strain, maximum sustainable load and the Young's modulus of tubes, were measured. Under parallel HRTEM observations the measured mechanical parameters were correlated to experimental conditions and tube structures.

Abstract:The control mechanisms of the strength and toughness of carbon nanotube (CNT) fibers are revealed by analyzing the load-bearing and deformation characteristics of multi-scale structures in the fiber under tensile loading. A theoretical model is established to investigate the effect of the multi-scale structures on the strength and toughness of CNT fibers. Based on our previous experimental results on tension with in situ micro-Raman monitoring [Li et al.. Nanotechnology 22, 2011], the macro- and micro-mechanical behaviors of the fiber are analyzed. The tensile behaviors of the fiber are correlated with the load-bearing and deformation processes involved in the multi-scale structures in the fiber, such as the nanotube bundle and the thread in microscopic scale, and the CNT in nanoscale. The CNT fiber exhibits high strength and toughness simultaneously depending on the multi-scale structure of the material, the differences in the properties between bundles and threads, and the unique interfaces formed by the tabular geometric configuration of double-walled CNTs. A constitutive relationship for CNT fiber materials is developed to provide information on the role of multi-scale structures on the strength and toughness of fibers. Both strength and toughness of CNT fibers can be enhanced by increasing the volume ratio of bundles to threads, the interfacial shear strength, and the interface slippage friction resistive force among the CNTs. Abstract:Various mechanical properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) and double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNT) are evaluated using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. A tensioning process was first performed on a SWCNT whose interaction is based on the Brenner’s ‘second generation’ potential under varying length–diameter ratios and strain rates, in order to understand the SWCNT’s behaviour under axial tension. The results showed an increase in the SWCNT’s ultimate tensile strength and a decrease in critical strain given the conditions of increasing strain rate and a decreasing length–diameter ratio. Comparison was done with previous studies on axial tensioning of SWCNT to validate the results obtained from the set-up, based on the general stress–strain relationship and key mechanical properties such as the strain at failure and the Young’s modulus. A DWCNT was then constructed, and Lennard-Jones ‘12-6’ potential was used to describe the energy present between the nanotube layers. Extraction of the inner tube in a DWCNT was performed using two inner wall tubings of different diameters to draw comparison to the energies needed to separate fully the outer and inner tubing. Finally, a bending test was performed on two DWCNTs with different intertube separations. Insights into the entire bending process were obtained through analyses of the variations in the strain energy characteristic of the surface atoms near the bending site, as the DWCNT is gradually bent until failure.

Abstract:We demonstrate here a novel method for performing in situ mechanical, electrical and electromechanical measurements on individual thin carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by using nanomanipulators inside a scanning electron microscope. The method includes three key steps: picking up an individual thin CNT from a substrate, connecting the CNT to a second probe or an atomic force microscope cantilever for the measurements and placing the CNT onto a holey carbon film on a transmission electron microscope grid for further structure characterization. With the method, Young’s modulus, the breaking strength and the effects of axial strain on electrical transport properties of individual thin CNTs can be studied. As examples, the mechanical, electrical and electromechanical properties of a double-walled CNT (DWCNT) and a single-walled CNT (SWCNT) were measured. We observed a strain-induced metallic-to-semiconducting transition of the DWCNT and a bandgap increase of the SWCNT. More importantly, the electromechanical properties of the SWCNT were correlated to its chirality determined by electron diffraction. The method enables us to relate mechanical, electrical and electromechanical properties of the measured thin CNTs to their atomic structures.

Abstract:The mechanical response of individual double-walled and triple-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and CNT ropes consisting of only two double-walled CNTs under tensile load was measured using nanomanipulators in a scanning electron microscope. The breaking strain and strength and Young's modulus of individual CNTs were measured to be 1.5-4.9%, 13-46 GPa, and 0.73-1.33 TPa, respectively. The low breaking strain and strength are most likely caused by the defects presented in the measured CNTs synthesized by chemical vapor deposition. Carbon nanotube ropes exhibited one-step or stepwise breaks depending oil the relative breaking strains of the two CNTs.

Abstract:The buckling and fracture modes of thick (diameter >20nm) multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) under compressive stress were examined using in situ transmission electron microscopy. The overall dynamic deformation processes of the MWCNTs as well as the force/distance curves can be obtained. The buckling behavior of MWCNTs under compression falls into two categories, the first is non-axial buckling and subsequently complex Yoshimura patterns can be induced on the compressive side of the MWCNTs. The second is axial buckling followed by catastrophic failure. We find the buckling mode of thick MWCNTs is highly dependent on the diameter and length of the MWCNTs. A continuum mechanics model is employed to determine the buckling mode criterion for the MWCNTs. Moreover, the shell by shell fracture mode and planar fracture mode of MWCNTs are directly observed in our experiments.
