Abstract:Abstract Large hydro-generators require a 100% protected area for stator ground protection. Because the fundamental voltage criterion has low sensitivity near the neutral point, a high sensitivity third harmonic voltage criterion is needed to ensure that the generator can accurately respond to stator ground fault. This paper analyzes the third harmonic voltage characteristics of two large hydro-generators, calculates the sensitivity of the existing third harmonic criterion, and points out that the impedance parameters of the grounding transformer should be considered. In view of the lack of sensitivity of the third harmonic criterion for large hydro-generators, this paper proposes a stator ground protection criterion based on the third harmonic voltage variation, which has zero action quantity under the generator non-fault conditions and zero braking quantity after a ground fault occurs, and thus has high sensitivity and can effectively respond to high-resistance ground faults. PSCAD/EMTDC simulation results show that the proposed method has high sensitivity at different fault locations and transition resistances, which can provide theoretical support for the improvement of stator grounding protection in practical engineering.

Abstract:The sensitivity of three common stator grounding protection schemes based on the third-harmonic voltage is compared and analyzed based on the parameters of a 300 MW turbine generator,which shows that the sensitivity of stator grounding protection schemes may be insufficient in the middle of the stator winding if the turbine generator is connected with the grounding transformer.Considering the frequent maloperation present in the existing stator grounding protection schemes based on the third-harmonic voltage,the causes of third-harmonic voltage variation of the generator terminal and the generator neutral point are analyzed.Based on the above research,an improved stator grounding protection scheme based on third-harmonic voltage variation component differential principle is proposed.The variation of the third-harmonic voltage of the generator terminal are corrected and then adopted to construct the differential criterion with the variation of the third-harmonic voltage of the generator neutral point,which can effectively distinguish the stator grounding faults from the normal change of generators' third-harmonic voltage.In order to avoid false tripping caused by harmonic voltage changes at high voltage side,a floating threshold value is also set according to the variation of the third-harmonic voltage at high voltage side.Simulative results show that the proposed scheme is theoretically correct and slightly affected by the changes of generator operating state with high sensitivity.

Abstract:Huge hydraulic-generators usually install two-frequency 100% protection for single-phase ground short faults,but the reliability,sensitivity and simplicity of its third-order harmonic voltage protection are not ideal in actual application.This paper presented a protection scheme to resolve these problems based on insulation condition principle.The principles of third-order harmonic voltage protection for ground faults were discussed,and its maloperations caused by generator starting,tripping and changes of operation modes were analyzed.The principle based on neutral side insulation condition was introduced and its keystone is to change the protection criterion based on the difference of electrical quantities to the nondimensional impedance ratio protection criterion based on insulation condition.Combining the principle and the characteristics of the ground faults,the effect in solving the existing problems was analyzed and the results indicate that the criterion is feasible and is hopeful in improving the performance of the ground fault protection for hydraulic-generators.

Abstract:To improve the sensitivity of ground fault protection for generators, this paper proposes a novel protection based on the fault components of third harmonic voltage at the terminals and neutral. Two types of protection scheme, i.e. amplitude and phase comparison, are given. The results of simulation and experiment verify that the novel protection is with high sensitivity, is immune to the operating condition of generator, and is of robustness.

Abstract:The third harmonic voltage of generator terminal TV is measured during the electric commissioning of first gas turbine of Zhangjiagang Huaxing Power Plant.The reason for third harmonic voltage producing by recording wave is analyzed and treated.Simulating the neutral winding grounded and non-grounded with MATLAB could verify that the third harmonic voltage of TV second winding is reduced if the third harmonic of excitation current can flow out.So the non-linear resistance is connected on the triangular winding,at the same time it is suggested that the generator terminal TV of Huaxing Power Plant should be configured triangular windings.

Abstract:New mathematical models for the zero-sequence voltage of large hydro-generator on turn basis are used to study hydro-generator stator ground fault protection schemes in this paper. The evaluation and the comparison of the characteristics of some stator ground protection schemes are described by means of protection coverage-critical resistance curves. And the simulation results showed that those schemes would suffer low sensitivity when they are used to huge hydro-generators in Three-Gorges power plant. To overcome this disadvantage, new ground fault protection schemes with higher sensitivity based on fault components are developed in this paper

Abstract:For floating nuclear power plants, the internal power system adopts the generator–grid directly connected structure. Generator ground fault diagnosis enables the protective device to adaptively determine the generator tripping control mode based on the fault degree, and shorten the troubleshooting time by fault location. To accurately calculate the ground fault current under different system operating modes, a real-time grounding capacitance parameters calculation method without injection devices is proposed based on third harmonic voltage. Using the fault component principle, the ground fault current is calculated including the fundamental and the third harmonic components. Through fuzzy membership function, the ground fault degree function is established including the ground fault current and the system overvoltage. It comprehensively reflects the damage degree of both the generator operating security and the system insulation security. According to the 60° phase-band distribution characteristic of the stator windings, a fault coil location method based on the windings’ electric potential distribution characteristics is proposed. PSCAD/EMTDC simulation results show that the proposed method has high computational accuracy.

Abstract:New stator ground fault protection principle is presented in this paper, which takes into account the phase angle comparison of the third-harmonic voltages at the generator terminals and the neutral. Analysis results show that the phase angle differential value of A-third-harmonic voltages under normal condition and fault condition will present greatly different, and this characteristic could not be influenced by the operation conditions. Thus, it can be used to detect the generator stator ground fault, which could ensure higher sensitivity because of cancellation of the pre-fault component. The start-up component is based on the wavelet transform (WT), its effects are also described. Experimental and field test results demonstrate that new scheme can obtain high sensitivity and reliability the generator relay required during different operation conditions. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Based on the parameters of a generator in Three Gorges Power Plant, the sensitivity of different protection schemes for hydro-generator stator ground fault using the theory of zero-sequence voltage is analyzed and compared. A new stator ground fault protection scheme based on fault contribution voltage components is presented. Simulation results show that, if the fault components can be obtained, the new scheme can satisfy the higher sensitivity required by the generators in Three Gorges Power Plant. Abstract:The main grounding modes of stator neutral-point for large-scale hydro-generator in China and its single-phase grounding protection are analyzed,as well as the existing problems.The advantages and disadvantages of the neutral-point grounding mode through power distribution transformer or arc suppression coil are analyzed.The operating principle of dual-frequency protection and the causes of its malfunction and corresponding countermeasures are discussed.The development status of the external power injection protection and some new technologies are introduced.The stator single-phase grounding protection technologies for large-scale hydro-generator are summarized and expected.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel third harmonic voltage differential stator grounding protection (THV-DSGP) method combining the adaptive coefficient and fixed coefficient. It can solve the protection sensitivity degradation problem when the insulation resistance of stator winding to ground is slowly declining. This protection method retains the advantages of the adaptive coefficient, which is to maintain high sensitivity in case of an instantaneous ground fault. Moreover, the fixed coefficient can remember the initial insulation state of the stator winding and prevent relay failure when the stator insulation is slowly declining. In addition, due to zero-sequence voltage disconnection (ZSVD) often leading to malfunctioning of the THV stator ground protection, the existing criterion of the ZSVD was improved according to the electrical characteristics of the generator when ZSVD happens. THV-DSGP with both adaptive coefficient and fixed coefficient was simulated in the Matlab/Simulink. The simulation results show that the proposed protection can be applied to the slow ground fault of the stator winding. Furthermore, the improved criterion of ZSVD can effectively distinguish the stator metal earth fault and the secondary loop break of the zero-sequence voltage.

Abstract:This paper analyzes the characteristic of the third-harmonic voltages at the generator neutral and the terminals under different operation conditions. According to that, a 100% coverage protection scheme based on phase-angle differential of the fault contributed third-harmonic voltage at the terminals and the neutral is presented, and the fault initialized by a wavelet transform start-up component. The corresponding protection equipment is introduced. Both simulation and experimental results show that the approach can obtain the high sensitivity and reliability.

Abstract:The stator single-phase grounding fault location of large generator can provide guidance for rapid maintenance of faults. A third harmonic potential distribution based stator ground fault accurate location method is proposed. The current location methods mainly take coil as location unit and may have location error. However, accurate locate to the slot number is more meaningful for troubleshooting. In addition, the third harmonic potential induced by adjacent slots has larger phase difference, and has more distinct fault characteristics than the fundamental potential. In this paper, the fault location optimization model is constructed based on the analysis of the distribution characteristics of the third harmonic potential. The exhaustive solution of the location model is realized by artificially setting multiple reference points, and finally the reference point closest to the real fault point is obtained. The proposed method can accurately locate the fault slot number. PSCAD simulation verifies that the proposed method is robust against the transition resistance error and has higher accuracy than the existing methods.

Abstract:This paper puts forward a transient based protection scheme for the stator ground fault of generator. The fault transient component of third harmonic voltage at neutral is approximately equal to that at terminal. Choosing their sum and difference as the action and restraint signal respectively, the protection detects the ground fault by comparing the spectrum energy of action and restraint signals. The results of simulation and experiment verify the novel protection scheme is with high sensitivity, is immune to the operating condition of generator, and is of robustness.

Abstract:By analyzing the sensitivity and its influencing factors of stator earth-fault protection by injecting a 20 Hz signal, this paper puts forward an improved generator protection scheme based on the impedance angle and its mutation component. The simulation results verify this kind of protection scheme has higher reliability and sensitivity under generator neutral grounding through a distribution transformer with a secondary resistor and arc-extinguishing coil compared with the conventional criterion. Against different grounding modes, the sensitivity of the protection scheme is further improved by correspondingly adjusting the frequency of the injected signal

Abstract:This paper analyses the effect of PT secondary circuit open at the neutral on the stator ground protection, and points out that this kind of PT fault will cause the maloperation of the stator ground protection, which adopts the ratio of third harmonics. However, it is hard for the present method to detect the PT secondary circuit open at the neutral. In the paper, the variations of the fault components of third harmonic at the terminal and neutral, which are nearly the same, are used to distinguish faults between the PT secondary circuit open and the direct grounding at the neutral to prevent the stator grounding protection from maloperation.
