Abstract:TiB2/AlN composites were fabricated by in-situ combustion synthesis (combustion synthesis, CS) with Ti, Al, BN as initial powders; The combustion temperature(T-C) of the reaction system was measured. It is proved that T-C is one of the main factors which affect the composition of the synthesized products. At higher T-C, the synthesized products consisted mainly of TiB2, AlN, and a trace of TiB, TiAl. After adjusting T-C by decreasing the density of the green compacts, the appearance of TiB and TiAl were eliminated from synthesized products, and uniform TiB2/AlN composites were then obtained. It was found that BN can be used as solid nitrogen source to fabricate nitride composites in this investigation.

Abstract:TiCxN1−x–TiB2 ceramic composites were prepared by combustion synthesis in a high-gravity field in air. The high-gravity field caused no change in phase composition but resulted in reduced delamination and grain refinement in the microstructure of the products. In a high-gravity field of 100g, well-developed faceted grains with a narrow size distribution were obtained. It is proposed that the combustion reaction happened by a pulsating combustion mode and the pulsating period was prolonged by the high-gravity field.

Abstract:The combustion synthesis reaction with reductive process was used to produce TiB2-Al2O3 composite powders from TiO2-B2O3-Al system. The phase, the chemical composition and the macrostructure were analyzed by XRD, XPS and SEM. The microstructure of the composite powders was characterized by TEM and HREM. The results show that the TiB2-Al2O3 composite powders could be obtained by combustion synthesis method between 420 degrees C similar to 700 degrees C. The composite powder was made up of TiB2 and Al2O3 only, the particle distribution was uniform. Because of the good interface formation, between TiB2 and Al2O3 particle during the synthesis reaction, which made TiB2 particles separated each other by Al2O3 particles and could inhibit effectually the grain growth in the particles and finally lead to decrease in the particle size, their,mean particle size was in the range of 3 mu m similar to 5 mu m.

Abstract:Using Ti and B4C as raw materials, Ti(C,N)-TiB2 composite powders were prepared by combustion synthesis under normal gravity and super gravity conditions, respectively. The combustion products were characterized by XRD and SEM, and the effects of starting compositions and super-gravity conditions on the phase composition and microstructure of products were studied. The experimental results showed that the combustion products mainly consisted of Ti(C,N) and TiB2, and relative contents of these two phases could be manipulated by changing Ti/B4C molar ratios. It was also found that the grains grew better and developed into regular polyhedrons under super gravity conditions, which could be attributed to more frequent contact of reactant particles.

Abstract:By coupling strong and weak exothermic reactions, (TiC+SiC) composite powders have been prepared by combustion synthesis. The reaction temperature and heating rate strongly depend on the Ti/Si ratios in the reactant powder mixture. The phase assemblage and microstructure of the products can be manipulated by varying the starting compositions. According to SEM observation, the reaction procedure and formation mechanism of TiC and SiC are discussed. It is proposed that the presence of metallic melt phases is important for the formation of the carbide phases.

Abstract:TiB2-TiC-WB composite ceramic powders have been prepared by fast combustion synthesis from Ti, W and B4C, by coupling the weak exothermic reaction of W + B = WB with strong ones of Ti + 2B = TiB2 and Ti + C = TiC. With increasing W/(Ti + W) ratio, the reaction temperature and heating rate decrease while the content of WB increases, and unreacted W appears for W/(Ti + W) = 0.24. The addition of excessive B4C leads to lower reaction temperature, smaller grain size, and formation of WB2. The products show a homogeneous microstructure without element segregation on the scale of agglomerates, and in most products the average grain size is smaller than 1µm.

Abstract:Porous TiC/Ni composites were prepared by combustion synthesis under high gravity. In TiC/Ni composites, hollow spheres of 50-200 mu m were produced, and their walls were composed of large TiC grains and small Ni particles. A larger average size of the spheres was observed in the samples prepared under high gravity compared with those obtained under normal gravity. Phase segregation was observed under high gravity, and Ni was enriched in the lower part of the samples. It is proposed that the mobility and collision frequency of liquid droplets will increase, and thus, the agglomeration of primary droplets can be enhanced under high gravity.

Abstract:Combustion synthesis of Ti3SiC2/TiC composites from 3Ti/xSi/2C (x=1, 1.1, 1.2) powders was conducted under high-gravity conditions with gravity up to 895 G. The results showed that the phase composition of the products strongly depended on the gravity level. We find that high-gravity synthesis favors the growth of TiC phase over Ti3SiC2 phase, as a consequence of the reduced existence time of the Ti-Si liquid phase. This discovery suggests that gravity provides a new leverage for controlling product phase composition in combustion synthesis. It was also found that the densification process during combustion synthesis could be enhanced under a high-gravity condition.

Abstract:By a furnace-free technique of high-gravity combustion synthesis, Al2O3–ZrO2–SiO2 ceramic composites were prepared via melt solidification instead of conventional powder sintering. The solidification kinetics and microstructure evolution of the ceramic composites in high-gravity combustion synthesis were discussed. The phase assemblage of the ceramic composites depended on the chemical composition, where both (Al2O3+ZrO2) and (mullite+ZrO2) composites were obtained. The ceramic composites consisted of ultrafine eutectics and sometimes also large primary crystals. In the (mullite+ZrO2) composites, two different morphologies and orientations were observed for the primary mullite crystals, and the volume fraction of mullite increased with increasing SiO2 content. The ceramic composites exhibited a hardness of 11.2–14.8GPa, depending on the chemical composition and phase assemblage.

Abstract:Structure formation in the combustion synthesis of Al 2 O 3 –TiC composites from TiO 2 , Al, and graphite powders was investigated using cylindrical samples and cone‐shaped “quenching samples.” It is shown that the phases Ti and Ti 3 Al exist as intermediates in the combustion synthesis process. Titanium carbide forms in a secondary step through reactions between graphite and liquid Ti or Ti 3 Al, then nucleates from a liquid mixture of the three phases Ti, Ti 3 Al, and alumina. The nucleated particles grow in the postcombustion stage. Liquid alumina, containing TiC as a dissolved phase, solidifies into corundum grains in the postcombustion stage. Moreover, it is shown that the temperature gradient in the postcombustion stage markedly affects the microstructures of the products. Higher‐temperature gradients, typical at the surface of the samples, give rise to the formation of corundum whiskers and TiC agglomerates. In contrast, lower gradients, typical in the center of the samples, lead to the formation of relatively large TiC particles and corundum grains.

Abstract:A nanophase composite powder has been synthesized by ball milling of a mixture of elemental Ti, Al and graphite powder with the composition of Ti65Al15C20. The nanophase TIC is distributed as ultrafine particles in an amorphous Ti-Al matrix. The present process combines alloying with solid-state reaction, which is controlled by interdiffusion of elements.

Abstract:The principle of in-situ formation of TiB2-TiC ceramics matrix composites was analyzed in this paper. The TiB2-TiC ceramics matrix composites of high performance were fabricated by hot pressing from TiH2-B4C. The results show that the TiB2 in microstructure presents long column morphologies which improve fracture toughness of the composite.

Abstract:Ti-containing ceramic composites were prepared by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis under ultra-high gravity. The effects of starting compositions and the ultra-high gravity field on the phase assemblage and microstructure of the products were discussed. The experimental results show that, the ultra-high gravity field has an evident influence on both the macro appearance and microstructure of the products. The products synthesized under ultra-high gravity have thicker layers and more homogenous microstructure with well-developed faceted grains and narrower grain size distribution. The phase assemblage of the products is mostly determined by the starting composition and little affected by the ultra-high gravity field.

Abstract:Dense titanium oxycarbonitride (TCNO) ceramic and its composites with in-situ grown and direct-added TiB2 particles were prepared by powder sintering. The TCNO ceramic is a single-phase solid solution and its com-posites mainly contain TCNO phase and TiB2 phase. The in-situ grown TiB2 grains have an average size about 2.3 mu m and the plate-like morphology, and the direct-added TiB2 form spherical grains with the average grain size about 2.0 mu m. Meanwhile, the introduction of the secondary phase of TiB2 reduces the TCNO grain size. Compared to the hardness of pure TCNO ceramic about 27.7 GPa, the hardness of its composites is increased to above 30 GPa. The outstanding hardness of TCNO ceramic and its composites is attribute to the synergistic effect of solid-solution reinforcement and the introduction of secondary phase of TiB2.

Abstract:The reaction process of combustion synthesis for TiB2−Cu was investigated in detail using combustion-wave arresting experiment, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, SEM analysis and differential thermal analysis (DTA). The XRD analysis results for the different parts of the quenched specimen show that TiCux intermetallic phase firstly forms with the propagation of combustion wave, and then Ti1.87B50 and Ti3B4 metastable phases come forth due to the diffusion of B atoms and finally the stable TiB2 phase forms because of the continuous diffusion of B atoms. The formation of TiB2 phase is not completed by one step, but undergoes several transient processes. The process of reaction synthesis for Ti−B−Cu ternary system can be divided into three main stages: melting of Cu and Ti, and the formation of Cu−Ti melt and few TiCux, TiBx intermetallic phases; large numbers of TiCux intermetallic phases formation and some fine TiB2 particles precipitation; and the TiB2 particles coarsening and the stable TiB2 and Cu two phases formation in the final product.
Effects of TiB2 Particles on the Microstructure Evolution and Mechanical Properties of B4C/TiB2 Ceramic Composite

Abstract:B4C/TiB2 ceramic composites reinforced with three size scales (average particle size: 7 μm, 500 nm, and 50 nm) of TiB2 were prepared by using a pressureless sintering furnace at 2100 °C under Ar atmosphere for 60 min. The results demonstrated that during the sintering process, TiB2 located on the boundaries between different B4C grains could inhibit the grain growth which improved the mass transport mechanism and sintering driving force. A semi-coherent interface between B4C and SiC was found, which is supposed to help to reduce the interface energy and obtain good mechanical properties of the B4C/TiB2 ceramic composite. On sample cooling from sintering temperature to room temperature, the residual tensile stress fields formed at the TiB2 interfaces owning to the thermo-elastico properties mismatched, which might have contributed to increase the ability of the sample to resist crack propagation. The results showed that the relative density, Vickers hardness, and fracture toughness of the composite with 20 wt.% submicron and 10 wt.% nano-TiB2 were significantly improved, which were 98.6%, 30.2 GPa, and 5.47 MPa·m1/2, respectively.

Research on TiC-Ni-Mo Composites by Combustion Synthesis

Abstract:Dense TiC-Ni cermets TH20 and TH30 were produced by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis and pseudo heat isostatic pressing. The influence of process parameters on densities was investigated. Cermet mainly consisted of TiC particles and Ni-binder. TiC skeletal structure was enveloped by continuous Ni-binder phase. The interfacial bonding between TiC and Ni was found to be of a good quality. High dislocation existed near the interface and inside the Ni-binder phase,some residual carbon exists in reaction product. Meanwhile transverse rupture strengths of TH20 and TH30 were both close to those produced by conventional technology.

Abstract:W/TiC composite powders were prepared through a novel wet chemical method using ammonium paratungstate and nanosized TiC powders as raw materials. The as-synthesized powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive spectroscopy. The as-synthesized powders possessed a uniform diameter of about 30nm to 100nm and contained only nanosized W and TiC particles. TEM images and diffraction ring spectra confirmed that the “cluster” structure composite powders are composed of TiC and nanosized W particles, which are located on the surface of TiC particle. To observe the formation of this structure, we focused on the process of preparing W/TiC powder and proposed a reasonable mechanism for the formation of the second-phase doped in W matrix materials by wet chemical method. The method followed an ideal model that may be used to prepare other materials.

Abstract:B4C–TiB2 ceramic composites were fabricated by a two-step method. First, B4C–TiB2 composite powders were synthesized from TiC–B powder mixtures at 1400 ℃, then mixed with commercial B4C powders by ball milling and the B4C–TiB2 ceramic composites were prepared by hot pressing at 1950 ℃. This two-step method not only effectively refined TiB2 grains, but also allowed the composition of the composites to be freely designed. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the composites were investigated. The results showed that the B4C–TiB2 ceramic composite with a 10 wt% TiB2 content obtained the ideal comprehensive performance, with a volume density, Vickers hardness, bending strength, and fracture toughness of 2.61 g/cm3, 35.3 GPa, 708 MPa, and 5.82 MPa m1/2, respectively. The advantages of the in-situ reaction process were fully exerted by the two-step method, which made a remarkable contribution to the excellent properties of B4C–TiB2 ceramic composites.
