Abstract:A fibre-optic strain sensor based on a gourd-shaped joint multimode fibre (MMF) sandwiched between two single-mode fibres (SMFs) is described both theoretically and experimentally. The cladding layers of the two MMFs are reshaped to form a hemisphere using an electrical arc method and spliced together, yielding the required gourd shape. The gourd-shaped section forms a Fabry-Perot cavity between the ends of two adjacent but non-contacting multimode fibres' core. The effectiveness of the multimode interference based on the Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) formed within the multimode inter-fibre section is greatly improved resulting in an experimentally determined strain sensitivity of -2.60 pm/με over the range 0-1000 με. The sensing characteristics for temperature and humidity of this optical fibre strain sensor are also investigated.

Abstract:An optical fiber pressure sensor was designed,fabricated and characterized.It employed a Fabry-Perot (F-P) interferometer and simple intensity-demodulation technology.A square silicon cup processed by anisotropic etching serves as sensitive element for the better consistency than that of circular diaphragm.A large area ratio of the moving mirror to the stationary one is introduced to reduce the nonlinearity due to the non-planarity of the deflection.Reference light generated from a 2×2 optical fiber coupler is used to decrease the influence of intensity variations of the light source.Single-value measurement was achieved under the pressure range from 0 to 38 kPa.The experimental results demonstrate an upmost relative sensitivity of 0.7%/kPa and a reasonable repeatability,consisting well with the theoretical analysis and simulation.A new method of multi-wave or multi-sensor is presented to expand the measurement range with high sensitivity.

Abstract:A novel intrinsic fiber optic pressure sensor realized with a polarization-maintaining photonic crystal fiber (PM-PCF) based Sagnac interferometer is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. A large wavelength-pressure coefficient of 3.42 nm/MPa was measured using a 58.4 cm long PM-PCF as the sensing element. Owing to the inherently low bending loss and thermal dependence of the PM-PCF, the proposed pressure sensor is very compact and exhibits low temperature sensitivity. Abstract:A new type of miniature pressure sensor based on a hybrid Fabry-Perot (F-P) interferometer is proposed. The in-line air cavity of the sensor is a micro-confocal air cavity, which is formed by splicing together a single mode fiber (SMF) and a solid-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) with the specific splicing parameters. The sensor is fabricated by simple steps involving only fusion splicing, cleaving and polishing. Optical interference principle of the sensor is analyzed and the parameters in sensor design are discussed. Due to low propagation loss, experiments show that the reflection spectrum of the sensor has a fringe contrast of more than 30 dB. By tracing the trough wavelength in the interference spectrum, the pressure can be demodulated. Within the pressure measurement range of 0-1 MPa, the sensitivity is -193 pm/MPa. The experimental results indicate that the deflection is consistent with the theoretical analysis and the sensor has a good linearity. Easy fabrication, low-cost and high-contrast make it appropriate for practical application.

Abstract:In this paper, an optical fiber Fabry–Pérot (FP) sensor for micro-pressure measurement is proposed. The FP interferometric cavity is composed of an end face of the incident optical fiber and a sensitive silicon diaphragm. The sensitive silicon diaphragm creatively utilizes a beam-membrane structure which is fabricated by micro-electro-mechanical system manufacturing technology. The finite element method simulation results show that the beam-membrane structure can achieve higher sensitivity and better linearity. The sensor performance test platform is built by a ASE-wide spectrum light source, optical spectrum analyzer, micro-pressure gas source and so on. The phase demodulation method is employed to demodulate the cavity length signal from the spectrum. The measure range of the sensor is 0–10 KPa, and the experimental sensitivity of the cavity length can reach to 242 nm KPa−1.

Abstract:We propose a fiber-optic Fabry–Pérot interferometer (FPI) pressure sensor that utilizes a diaphragm structure interfacing with the flat-cut end face of a single-mode fiber (SMF). The application of pressure results in the deformation of the diaphragm, which is analyzed using wavelength tracking and cavity length (CL) demodulation techniques. To compensate for temperature effects, fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is connected in series. The sensor exhibits a sensitivity of 4.33 pm/MPa when utilizing wavelength shift and 1.83 nm/MPa when measuring CL change within a pressure range of 0–80 MPa and a temperature of 150 °C. Due to its extensive dynamic range, heightened sensitivity, and excellent temperature resistance, this sensor is used to monitor pressure changes in 3500-m-deep oil wells.

Abstract:A new type of on-line fiber Fabry-Perot (F-P) pressure sensor was proposed.The F-P cavity of the sensor is a micro-ellipsoidal air cavity,which is formed by splicing together a SMF and a solid-core PCF with the specific splicing parameters.The pressure sensor based on F-P interference principle has many advantages such as all-silica structure,simple production process and small temperature cross-talk.In this paper,the relationship between the diameter of the short axis (cavity length) and the radius of the major axis (the effective radius of the sensitive film) in the sealed ellipsoidal air F-P cavity was analyzed.The relationship between the shape of the air F-P cavity and the cavity loss was analyzed by Gaussian beam transmission theory.The relationship among the center deflection,the film thickness and the effective radius of the SiO2 sensitive membrane was analyzed.The pressure sensitive characteristic model of SiO2 film was established,and the numerical analysis and finite element simulation were carried out under the condition of uniform load.The relationship between the wavelength and the pressure was simulated,and it provided a theoretical basis for the design of optical fiber micro-pressure sensor.

Abstract:This article introduces a novel high-sensitivity pressure and temperature sensor utilizing a tapered no-core fiber (NCF) structure created by splicing the NCF with a single-mode fiber (SMF) to form a "SMF-NCF-SMF" structure, tapering the NCF, and applying a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film on the tapered NCF surface. The experimental results show that the device with a diameter of 10 μm has a pressure sensitivity of 86.63 nm/MPa within one to two atmospheres. Furthermore, the temperature sensitivity is −1.97 nm/°C from 30 °C to 60 °C. The sensor exhibits excellent stability and repeatability, and the PDMS film enhances the mechanical strength of the device, indicating promising potential for high-sensitivity pressure and temperature applications.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a sensitivity-enhanced fiber-optic pressure sensor using a simplified hollow-core photonic crystal fiber (SHC-PCF). The sensing head is fabricated by splicing a single mode fiber to a section of SHC-PCF, while the air claddings at the end of the PCF are selectively blocked by glue sealing and femtosecond laser machining. By immersing the end into water, a compressible Fabry-Prot cavity can be formed in the fiber core of the PCF. Since the air core is opened up to the air claddings at the splicing joint, changing of environmental pressure will cost a large change of the cavity length to balance the pressure, which greatly enhances the pressure sensitivity of the sensor. A pressure sensitivity of 18.15 $\mu$ m/kPa is experimentally demonstrated in the pressure range from 110 to 130 kPa. This sensor has potential applications in the area of highly sensitive pressure measurement.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a high pressure sensor based on a polarization-maintaining photonic crystal fiber (PMPCF) with Sagnac loop configuration for downhole application. The pressure sensitivity of the proposed sensor is 4.21 nm/MPa and 3.27 nm/MPa at ~1320 nm and ~1550 nm respectively. High pressure measurement up to 20 MPa has been achieved in our experiment. The sensor also shows reduced temperature sensitivity, making it an ideal candidate for pressure sensing in harsh environment.

Abstract:In this study, a new type of structure of optical fiber pressure sensor (OFPS) based on polarization modulation is proposed, which selects a high-birefringence fiber (HBF) as the sensing unit to measure the pressure in the fluid medium. The PM-1550-01 fiber produced by NTK Photonics Inc. is evaluated as the sample in our subject. Firstly, the regularities of birefringence variation on the PM-1550-01 followed by the external pressure load and the ambient temperature are analyzed by the finite element method (FEM). The results show that the pressure sensitivity is 2.05 x 10(-6) RIU/MPa in the pressure range of 0-100 MPa, and the temperature sensitivity is 7.27 x 10(-)(10) RIU/degrees C in the temperature range of 0-100 degrees C. Thus, the pressure-temperature cross-sensitivity is only 0.355 kPa/degrees C in theory. Secondly, the expression of the output light intensity of the introduced OFPS is deduced based on the principles of polarization interference and phase modulation. Combined with simulation results, the measurement ranges of the sensor can be set and adjusted by the length of the sensing unit. Finally, the proposed OFPS is fabricated and external pressure tests within the range of 0-50 MPa are completed. The results show that the pressure sensitivity is approximately 0.145 dB/MPa in the pressure range of 0-44 MPa. There is a fine consistency between the experimental data and simulation results. In addition, the proposed OFPS has many other advantages, such as small size, simple fabrication process and large measurement range, which make it appropriate to be applied in high-pressure measurement in hostile conditions, e.g., downhole and ocean-bottom.

Abstract:A mono-fiber optic pressure sensor aimed to reduce the size of sensors is designed. A single optic fiber is used to replace the traditional optic fiber bundle, and to collect the light reflected by an elastic spherical diaphragm, which is part of the light emitted out by itself. The single optic fiber works as emitting light fiber as well as receiving light fiber. The diaphragm coils when force is performed upon, and light intensity received by the fiber changes depending on the deformation of the elastic spherical diaphragm. The relationship between sensitivities of the sensor and the distance from the terminal of fiber to the initial diaphragm before force performed upon are researched experimentally. According to the analysis of virtual light spot, light distributing theory is modified, and it makes the consequence of calculations fit the results of experiment well. The sensor with the unique structure can not only minish the size of sensor but also solve the un-detecting-area problem of multi-fiber optic sensors.

Abstract:A novel sensor based on a single fiber Bragg grating is described.The sensor is configured by encapsulating half of a fiber Bragg grating in a polymer filled metal cylinder and fixing the other half to the metal cylinder.The fixed part of the fiber Bragg grating is immune to the strain while the other part is sensitive to both the strain and the temperature,therefore the novel structure can realize the separate sense of strain and temperature.Using a novel tactic to transfer the applied pressure to the axial extended-strain on the fiber Bragg grating,the pressure sensitivity can be greatly improved.The results show that this novel sensor can simultaneously measure pressure and temperature,meanwhile the pressure sensitivity reaches to 9.65×10-3MPa-1,which is about 4770 times larger than that of the bare fiber Bragg grating.

Abstract:A simple MEMS optical fiber pressure sensor with the Fabry-Perot interferometer configuration is constructed that is based on a square silicon diaphragm and the intensity demodulation technology. A large area ratio of the moving mirror to the stationary one is employed to minimize the non-planarity of the deflection, and a reference light generated by a 2x2 optical fiber coupler is used to reduce the errors that are produced by the intensity variations of the light source. The theoretical analysis, simulation and experimental results all show that the pressure sensor has reasonable sensitivity, stability and measurement range. With a low cost and simple fabrication process, this sensor has great potentials for mass production and commercialization.

Abstract:A highly sensitive fiber-optic Fabry-Perot sensor based on femtosecond (fs) laser micromachining is proposed and demonstrated for gas pressure measurement. The sensor is fabricated by inserting two single mode fibers (SMFs) into a capillary. A fs laser is employed to drill a micro-channel on the wall of the capillary to allow gas diffuse in. Due to the linear relationship between the pressure and the refractive index (RI) of the gas, the gas pressure can be detected by investigating the optical cavity length. The signal is demodulated by using the white-light interferometry (WLI) method based on digital cross-correlation technology. The sensitivity of the proposed pressure sensors is investigated theoretically and experimentally. The sensitivity of the sensor with a cavity length of 2926 μm is 7702 nm/MPa. In addition, a good repeatability and a high resolution of 4.9 Pa of the proposed sensor have been demonstrated. Due to the miniature size, wide dynamic range, high stability, high sensitivity and high resolution, the membrane-free fiber-optic Fabry-Perot sensor with Pa-level resolution has a wide application for gas pressure detection.

Abstract:Silica fiber under high pressure increases the risk of fiber breakage or permanent deformation, which may cause sensor failure due to mechanical strength limitations. High pressure can also induce birefringence in optical fiber. In this study, we present a simple design and low-cost high pressure sensor using polymer optical fiber (POF) based on the intensity-variation technique. A side-coupling mechanism in the sensor structure is adopted, which varies the intensity with applied pressure. Two POFs are twisted together to create a sensing region where the light is launched in the first fiber and measurement is taken from the second fiber. In sensing phenomena, cladding mode frustrated total internal reflection occurs when pressure increases. Silicone gel is used in the pressure chamber for sealing and preventing leakage. The sensor structure is able to detect high pressure in the MPa range, where we tested up to 4 MPa. For higher sensitivity, twisted and bend structure is analyzed, and sensitivity is achieved at about 432.21 nW/MPa. However, twisted helical structure is adopted to enhance sensing range which is about 50 cm. The proposed high-pressure sensor structure is easier to fabricate and has high stability because it doesn't require any destructive method as compared to other conventional methods.

Abstract:In the field of in situ measurement of high-temperature pressure, fiber-optic Fabry–Perot pressure sensors have been extensively studied and applied in recent years thanks to their compact size and excellent anti-interference and anti-shock capabilities. However, such sensors have high technological difficulty, limited pressure measurement range, and low sensitivity. This paper proposes a fiber-optic Fabry–Perot pressure sensor based on a membrane-hole-base structure. The sensitive core was fabricated by laser cutting technology and direct bonding technology of three-layer sapphire and develops a supporting large-cavity-length demodulation algorithm for the sensor's Fabry–Perot cavity. The sensor exhibits enhanced sensitivity, a simplified structure, convenient preparation procedures, as well as improved pressure resistance and anti-harsh environment capabilities, and has large-range pressure sensing capability of 0–10 MPa in the temperature range of 20–370 °C. The sensor sensitivity is 918.9 nm/MPa, the temperature coefficient is 0.0695 nm/(MPa∙°C), and the error over the full temperature range is better than 2.312%.
