Abstract:Various Design by Analysis methods were reviewed for use in the design of pressure vessels.The elastic Design by Analysis methods focus on stress classification approaches,such as the Stress Equivalent Linearization,the Two-Step Approach,the Primary Structure method,the Elastic Compensation method,and the GLOSS R-Node method.Inelastic Design by Analysis methods overcome the disadvantages of the stress classification methods,and have been organized into the European pressure vessel standard and the ASME Code.A calculated example demonstrates the differences of the elastic and inelastic methods.The results show that inelastic methods are more appropriats for complex pressure vessel components.

Abstract:As a critical component of pressure equipment, ellipsoidal head is widely used in the fields of petrochemical industry and nuclear plant.The design of ellipsoidal head is so important to guarantee the safety and economy of the pressure equipment.Based on the Chinese standards GB/T 150 and JB 4732, ASME BPVC Section Ⅲ.division 1-Subsection NE, Code Case N-284, SectionⅧ division 1 and division 2, and the European Standard EN 13445, the design methods for internally pressurized ellipsoidal head were discussed and compared in detail.ASME Codes and EN 13445 adopt the design methods based on various failure modes of internally pressurized ellipsoidal head.However, the Chinese standards GB/T 150 and JB 4732 adopt the strength design methods based on maximum stress and limit pressure, respectively.The design equation for preventing local buckling failure was not presented in the Chinese standards, which was disadvantageous for the design of large-scale thin-walled ellipsoidal head.The design results of JB 4732 were too conservative, which was not economical.Moreover, it concluded that there was a defect in these design methods that the effect of both strain hardening and large deflection was ignored.Therefore, it will be a good suggestion to improve the design methods of internally pressurized ellipsoidal head for Chinese standards.

Abstract:Plastic analysis methods for design by analysis of pressure vessels are introduced and reviewed in this paper.The ASME Ⅷ-2 2007 is taken as the mainline of the introduction,and the European standard EN 13445 2002 is also involved.The limit-load analysis method and elastic-plastic stress analysis method of ASME Code,as well as the direct route of European standard are included in this introduction.

Abstract:The analysis method of reinforcements for openings in cylindrical vessels appears in the China National Standard "Pressure vessels" GB 150-2011 for the first time.The analysis method,which is based on the thin cylindrical shell theoretical solutions developed by the Chinese authors,could be applicable to d/D≤0.9.In this paper the theoretical basic is given in brief and the foundations of design rules are presented.The comparisons of the analysis method with other design methods are presented as well.

Abstract:Standards GB 150.3-2011 and JB4732-1995 (Confirmed in 2005) provide design methods for the cylindrical pressure vessels with spherically dished head under internal pressure. It is available for the ratio of the internal pressure p to the allowable stress Sm, p/Sm≥0.002. Engineers desire the design curves for p/Sm<0.002. This paper presents a stress analysis method based on elastic thin shell theory for a spherically dished head jointed to the end or the middle of the cylindrical shell. The design criteria in the current standards are modified. Based on the theoretical stress solution and design criteria, the suitable range of the design curves is extended to p/Sm≥0.001. Nonlinear elastic perfectly-plastic finite element method ensures the reliability of the design curves.

Abstract:The horizontal pressure vessels which have large slenderness ratio are supported on multi-saddles to reduce the numerical value of the moment and support pressure.The process of the design of the horizontal cylindrical vessel supported on multi-saddles is always according to L.P.Zick's method,which is used for the design of the horizontal vessel supported on two saddles.L.P.Zick's method used for the horizontal vessel supported on multi-saddles is complex and has less practicality.A new method was given in European harmonized standard——EN13445 Unfired Pressure Vessels.It is the first time that the method of design of horizontal pressure vessel on multi-saddles was written in the official standard.The article mainly introduces the differences between the two methods and the shortcomings of them.

Abstract:The implementation of the primary structure method in design by analysis of pressure vessel is discussed. With two examples of axisymmetric structure of pressure vessel, flat head-cylindrical shell joint and flange-ellipsoidal head joint, the primary structure is constructed according to the principle of this method with ANSYS. By comparing the stress intensity and deformation of the primary structure with that of the original structure, the primary and secondary stress along the stress classification line can be clearly distinguished by using the primary structure method. It has great application value in dealing with stress classification in the elastic stress analysis method. The results also show that a variety of reasonable primary structures can be constructed based on the same original structure, and the primary structure method has some flexibility.

Abstract:With the development of the large scale and high parameters in Chinese petrochemical indus-try,it is urgent to establish a set of effective and simple methods for elevated temperature analysis.After adequate understanding of the principles and merits and demerits of the elevated temperature analysis methods in the codes of many countries,Chinese national standards have introduced the complete methods of elevated temperature analysis in due time to guide engineering application.In this paper,the formula-tion principle,main methods,steps and framework,subsequent works,etc.of elevated temperature analysis are discussed,which can provide helpful references for introduction of elevated temperature analysis meth-od in the domestic standard in the future.

Abstract:Various design codes,simplified design and experimental test methods about shakedown esti-mation for pressure vessels and piping are reviewed and compared.The simplified methods developed in recent years,such as Elastic Compensation Method(ECM) and Nonlinear superstition Method(NLSM),for shakedown estimation under proportional and non-proportional loads are stressed.Results show that,compared with the Direct Analysis Method(DAM) and ECM,NLSM has better efficiency,accuracy and applicability.Some suggestions have been provided to improve the evaluation of the shakedown behavior for pressure vessels and piping.

Abstract:Stress categorization in the design by analysis (DBA) procedure for protection against plastic collapse in pressure vessel has been problematic during application. For example, it is difficult to determine the proportion of primary and secondary stress at the gross structural discontinuities. This paper proposes a new method to avoid the stress categorization by extending the current elastic stress analysis method in ASME Code based on lower bound limit load theory. The proposed method assumes a stress distribution along the stress classification line (SCL) in the form of limit stress state for a beam under membrane and bending load, rather than a linear stress distribution. The effectiveness of proposed method is verified by comparing with the elastic stress analysis, Limit-Load Analysis, Elastic-Plastic stress Analysis of the ASME Code for axisymmetric pressure vessels. The results concluded that the new method is effective easy to use.

Abstract:Incomplete penetration, as a common pressure pipe welding defect, may lead to the reduction of load carrying capacity of the pipe, and serious accidents. By simplifying the effect factors of pressure piping containing incomplete penetration defect, the relation between the plastic limit loads and main effect factors was studied based on the analysis of the elastic-plastic finite element. A fitted formula for plastic limit load of pressure piping containing incomplete penetration defect was given. An experimental system used for testing the limit load of pressure piping under combined loads was designed, the experimental results are consistent with those from FEA. On the basis of results of FEA and experiments, a safety evaluation method for pressure piping containing incomplete penetration defect under combined loads is proposed.

Abstract:More and more pressure vessels constructed from spheroidal graphite cast iron are used in recent years result from the excellent mechanic and cast characteristic of spheroidal graphite cast iron.Not only ASME Ⅷ-1 and EN 13445-6 are focused,but also some native related standards and regulations are taken into the comparison such as TSG R0004—2009.Main parts of the standards like scope,materials,design,founding,inspection and testing of castings are compared to find the similarities and differences in the paper.The comparison shows a great advantageous in design by analysis,assessment of fatigue life and non-destructive inspection of EN 13445-6.Also some suggestions are made to the preparation of releasing our native standards for pressure vessels constructed from spheroidal graphite cast iron.

Abstract:With von Mises yield criterion, the loading range of Net Section Collapse (NSC) Criteria is extended from combined tension and bending loadings to combined bending, torsion and internal pressure loadings. A new theoretical analyzing method of plastic limit load for pressure pipe with incomplete welding defects based on the extended NSC Criteria is presented and the correlative formulas are deduced, the influences of pipe curvature, circumferential length and depth of incomplete welding defects on the plastic limit load of pressure pipe are considered as well in this method. Meanwhile, according to the orthogonal experimental design method, the plastic limit loads are calculated by the finite element method and compared with the theoretical values. The results show that the expressions of plastic limit load of pressure pipe with incomplete welding defects under bending, torsion and internal pressure based on extended NSC criteria are reliable. The study provides an important theoretical basis for the establishment of safety assessment measure towards pressure pipe with incomplete welding defects.

Abstract:Great effects have been produced by the European standard EN13445 on the design and fabrication of pressure vessels all over the world because of its precedence and innovation in technology.In this article,Essential Safety Requirements(ESR) for pressured equipments prescribed by Pressured Equipment Directive 97/23/EC(PED) was introduced,the conformity assessment procedure of EN13445 for ESR was discussed,the challenges and opportunities for Chinese pressure vessels fabrication and trade followed by the implement of PED and EN13445 was analyzed.
A Universal Design Method Based on Analysis for Cylindrical Shells with Nozzles Due to Internal Pressure, External Forces and Moments: Part II

Abstract:A universal design method for pressurized cylindrical shells with attached nozzles subjected to external forces (moments) and internal pressure are presented based on theoretical stress analysis. The applicable ranges of the presented design methods are extended to d/D≤0.9 and λ=d/(DT)1/2≤12. As a first step of design the required reinforcement thicknesses both of main shell and nozzle due to internal pressure can be determined by the presented theoretical solutions. When the junctions are subjected to external nozzle loads, the next step is to determine the absolute values of dimensionless longitudinal and circumferential, normal and shear, membrane and bending stresses in the main shell at the junction subjected to internal pressure and six external nozzle load components by reading out from a number of sets of curves calculated by the present theoretical method. Then the stress components at eight examination points are calculated and superposed for the combined loads. Finally the membrane and primary plus secondary stress intensities can be calculated, respectively, to meet the design criteria.

Abstract:Several pressure vessel design methods based on elastic analysis and elastic-plastic analysis are available to designers. This paper proposes a reliability analysis method to assess three pressure vessel design methods: Stress Categorisation Method (SCM), Limit-Load Analysis (LIMIT) in ASME code and DBA-L method which was recently proposed by present authors. It was concluded that with the same input variables into the three analyses, the responses of calculated results of three method were different, which provided an effective guidance to assess and choose the proper design method in engineering practice.

Abstract:Technical developments in the design of pressure vessels in European and USA were presented, which included the adjustment of material design factor in ASME boiler and pressure vessel code section VIII division 1, a brief introduction of ASME boiler and pressure vessel code section VIII division 3, adoption of flat steel ribbon wound pressure vessels in ASME boiler and pressure vessel code section VIII division 1 and division 2, an introduction of European pressure equipment directive, and some ongoing research projects conducted by the Pressure Vessel Research Council and the European Pressure Equipment Research Council respectively.
