Abstract:Based on Tian huangping GIS Substation, very fast transient over-voltage caused by disconnecting switch operation of GIS is simulated and calculated in this paper with ATP-EMTP program. The effect of protection measures on equipments is compared and analyzed, such as adding opening and closing resistor, MOA, R-C absorber, and Ferrite Rings. Also the measures are analyzed with considering the actual situation, which can provide reference for the implementation of the practical project.

Abstract:With EMTPE program, very fast transient overvoltages c aused by disconnecting switch operation of 500 kV GIS are simulated and calculat ed in this paper. The effect of protection measures on HV side of main transform er is compared and analyzed, such as: 1)adding parallel coupling capacitor, 2)se ries connecting to the wave trap coil or, 3)combining the two methods. The first method is better to reduce voltage oscillation amplitude, to filtrate high freq uencies and to decrease wave front gradient.

Abstract:Disconnect switch restriking causes very fast transient over-voltages (VFTO) in gas insulated substations (GIS) which can damage power equipment, especially inductance devices in the substations. The VFTO characteristics, origins, and influencing factors were analyzed to quantify the threat and evaluate mitigation methods. A typical 500 kV GIS engineering example was also analyzed. Experimental results in the literature were used to evaluate the effect of VFTO on power transformers. In the example tested in this project, the long power cable connecting the GIS to the power transformer caused the VFTO to have negligible effect on the power transformer.

Abstract:Electronic current transformers, with excellent properties of simple insulation, small volume, light weight, wide dynamic range, and no magnetic saturation, have been widely used in substations. With the fast improvement of substation voltage grade, the electromagnetic interference (EMI) problem of switching operation overvoltage, especially very fast transient overvoltage (VFTO), on electronic transformers in substations has gotten more and more attention. In this paper, the physical process of VFTO in high voltage substations is analyzed. The high frequency model of Rogowski coil in electronic transformers under VFTO is built, the simulated waveform of the signals at the output ports of Rogowski coil is obtained. It is proved that the distribution parameters model can reflect the high frequency characteristics better by comparing the waveform of distribution parameter model, lumped parameter model and the measured signal waveform.
Effect of Isolating Switch Operation on Very Fast Transient Over-voltage in Extra-high Voltage GIS

Abstract:The very fast transient over-voltage caused by three operation modes of isolating switch of extra-high voltage GIS in a 550 kV substation is investigated.The transformer winding’s end to ground VFTO waveforms and the voltage waveforms of transformer winding pies between 0 and 1 are obtained.The over-voltage of making and breaking short cable of transformer,over-voltage of longitudinal calculating point to ground of transformer winding,and winding pies longitudinal VFTO are calculated,respectively.The results show that the maximum gradient voltage of 1 to 3 winding pies will exceed the critical value under the condition where the isolating switch operates in mode 3 and the transformer is charged.Therefore,the operation mode 3 should be avoided.

Abstract:The very fast transient overvoltage(VFTO) of the ultra-high voltage GIS system may pose the threats to the GIS main insulation and the main transformer.The southeastern Shanxi ultra-high GIS substation prospective time model of the connection mode of a 3/2 circuit breaker was built with the EMTP simulation software.The possible maximum VFTO produced by switching the main transformer,outgoing line and bus line was calculated.The possible maximum VFTO produced by switching the main transformer was estimated to reach 2.51 p.u.,which will cause severe damages to the main insulation and interturn insulation of the GIS.However,the VFTO produced by transferring outgoing line and bus line will not cause any damage.The measures of following the normal operating sequences and completely eliminating the VFTO produced by transferring the main bus for the 3/2 circuit breaker were indicated.For the ultra-high voltage substation,the disconnector should be separated after separating the high and low circuit breakers in the two sides of the main transformer.For the large-scale power plant,it was suggested to install the generator circuit breaker(GCB) and separate the GCB and the circuit breaker in the high-voltage side of the main transformer followed by separating the disconnector.By these measures,the VFTO produced by operating the main transformers in ultra-high voltage substation and large-scale power plant can be eliminated completely,ensuring the safety of the main insulation of the GIS ontology and the interturn insulation of the main transformer.

Abstract:Nowadays, with the fast development of power system, gas-insulated switchgears (GIS) has been widely used in high voltage power grids because of compact structure, high reliability and easy-maintainability. At the same time, as the concept of smart grid is introduced, more and more intelligent devices are used in GIS. The disconnector switching operations always produce electromagnetic field emissions and influence the stable operation of electronic devices in GIS. By establishing the enclosure circuit model and the electromagnetic emission model of GIS, the electromagnetic field caused by switching operation is calculated in this paper, and then, the relationships between electromagnetic field and height, grounding points are analyzed. The calculated electromagnetic fields are in good agreement with the measured results.

Abstract:The very fast transient overvoltage (VFTO) caused by operation of disconnector in a GIS substation will harm the GIS equipment,the transformer,and the secondary equipment connected with GIS due to its high amplitude.In this study,for design and layout of GIS substation,this paper calculated the parameter of major equipment of a 800 kV GIS substation,and the calculation was verified by measurement.Moreover,EMTP program was adopted to simulate the VFTO generated by disconnector in six different operating modes,thus the maximum values and location of VFTO in the six different operating modes of disconnector were obtained.comparison with the safe criteria indicated that the insulation of the 800 kV GIS substation meets the requirements.In addition,the factors influencing VFTO amplitude,such as residual voltage,damping resistance and short-bus length,were analyzed.

Abstract:With the help of PSCAD/EMTDC software,the very fast transient overvoltage(VFTO) which occurs during operation on main transformers and outgoing lines in the 500 kV GIS substation for Jiangsu Pumped-Storage Power Station is calculated and analyzed,and a typical 500 kV main transformer is taken as an example to describe the effects of VFTO on main transformers during various operation.The results show that since the cables connecting the main transformer and the GIS are long(at least 200 m),the amplitude and gradient of the VFTO which transmits to every main transformer is not high,and effects of the VFTO on transformers are negligible.

Abstract:In GIS substations, operations of disconnectors may cause very fast transient overvoltage (VFTO) with high amplitude and steep wave front. Considering the narrower insulation margin of UHV GIS equipments and larger absolute magnitude of VFTO in UHV GIS systems, VFTO in UHV GIS systems could cause larger damage than those in EHV and lower ones. Therefore study on VFTO in UHV GIS systems is of great significance to choose more economical and more effective measures to prevent VFTO, in order to finally improve the safety and reliability of UHV GIS systems. In this paper, characteristics and hazards of VFTO in UHV GIS systems are analyzed by comparing it to that of EHV GIS systems. Comparison shows that the absolute value of VFTO in UHV GIS system is almost as twice as that of EHV GIS systems, but the insulation level of UHV GIS equipments is only 1.55 times as that of EHV ones, resulting in much more danger in the UHV GIS equipments. Then, several preventive measures are analyzed and summarized in this paper, by simulating Jindongnan UHV GIS substation based on EMTP. The maximum amplitude of VFTO with no suppressing measures is up to 2.72 p.u., dangerously exceeding the limit level of insulation, which is about 2.32 p.u. in UHV GIS systems. Analysis shows that installing proper shunt resistors in disconnectors is the most feasible and effective preventive measure at present. In spite of the lack of practical applications, ferromagnetic rings have great prospects of effectively suppressing VFTO. All possible switching sequences in Jindongnan UHV GIS substation are analyzed and simulated, among which the one that generates the severest VFTO is found out. Because the transformer of Jindongnan UHV GIS substation is connected to bus through overhead lines for long distance, the steepness of wave front is effectively reduced, thus VFTO will not threaten the transformer.

Abstract:Very fast transient overvoltage(VFTO),transient enclosure voltage(TEV) and electromagnetic interference(EMI) with steep wave-front and high amplitude are generated during switching of disconnector in gas insulated switchgear(GIS) with no-load short busbar.The transient voltages cause high stress on the insulation of GIS,equipment connected to GIS and electronic devices connected to GIS enclosure.And the operation of electronic devices is interfered by EMI.VFTO and associated effects have seriously affected the safety operation of equipment in GIS substations.To guide the equipment development and engineering design for ultra high voltage(UHV) transmission systems in China,the achieved results before 2009 on VFTO measurement,characteristics test,digital calculation and its impact on insulation were summarized in the paper.And the achievements on measurement and simulation of VFTO within UHV GIS by State Grid Corporation of China were described.Finally some subjects of VFTO in UHV GIS to be deeply studied were proposed.The transmitting characters and simulation model of VFTO should be emphasized,including the insulation properties and its mechanism under VFTO.All the achievements provide important reference to master thoroughly the characteristics of VFTO in UHV GIS and to guide the switching of GIS.

Abstract:Very fast transient overvoltage（VFTO） generated during switching of disconnector in gas insulated switchgear（GIS） may threaten the safety operation of electric equipment,the influence is more serious with the increase of power system voltage and it is preeminent in ultra high voltage（UHV） system.To master the characteristics of VFTO in UHV GIS,lots of experiments by switching of GIS disconnectors were carried out in two VFTO test circuits of UHV GIS and the test results of VFTO were statistically analyzed in this paper.The waveform characters,striking numbers,frequency components and residual voltage distribution of full VFTO waveforms,the waveform characters and oscillation factor distribution of single striking waveform,the characteristics of VFTO magnitudes were proposed.The suppression of VFTO by damping resistor in GIS disconnector was illustrated.The achieved characteristics of VFTO in UHV GIS have been the basis for further VFTO study on simulation and insulation coordination etc.

Abstract:Very fast transient overvoltages (VFTOs) generated during circuit breakers or disconnector switches operations in ultra high voltage gas insulated switchgears (GIS) make great threats to the insulation of power equipments. For the purpose of more economical of GIS insulation design and insulation co-ordination, it is necessary to research the insulation characteristics of GIS equipments under VFTOs. In this paper, simulation results of designed high voltage circuit using Electro Magnetic Transients Program, a systemic design method of VFTO generation and measurement were proposed. Besides, the effects of circuit configuration on VFTO parameters were also researched. Finally, VFTO generated by the system was measured. Simulation results revealed that the intermediate storage capacitor had a big effect on output efficiency and frequency of VFTO. The inductance of generation circuit should be as small as possible. While resistance should be chosen properly for higher efficiency and proper oscillation of VFTO. Test results demonstrated the newly developed generation system could generate 2.5MV VFTO, which had a risetime of 49ns and oscillation frequency of 8.1MHz. The VFTO generation system can help to better research insulation characteristics of GIS.

Abstract:UHV AC GIS Basin type insulator is the key component of the gas insulated substation (GIS). The stability and reliability operation determines the insulation strength level of GIS. However, because of the characteristic of switchgear in GIS, the very fast transient overvoltage (VFTO) occurs with high frequency, amplitude and gradient, which will threaten the safety of insulation. In the past time, electric field distribution with VFTO was calculated by traditional method which used the peak voltage as the boundary condition. In this paper, a transient method which have the effect of wave front in consideration was proposed. A circuit model of GIS was built to simulate the VFTO, and than a equivalent bevel flat top wave of VFTO was used to be a boundary condition. Eventually, a basic finite element model was established by using COMSOL, and the electric field was obtained when the wave pass through center conductor in instantaneous condition. Electric field distribution in different time were shown. Results indicated that when the wave process was in consideration, the electric field will be distorted and comparing with traditional method, it will make the electric strength increase.

Abstract:Gas insulated switchgear（GIS） has a wide range of acceptance in power systems due to its good compactness and tightness,slight environment effect,and long maintenance cycle.But,the disconnector operation in GIS can generate very fast transient overvoltage（VFTO）,which does great harm to GIS,especially when the voltage level of GIS is higher than 330 kV.In order to simulate VFTO in ultra high voltage（UHV） GIS,an experimental platform for generating VFTO was designed by using impulse voltage generators and voltage sharpening devices.To the generate voltage waveform with amplitude of up to 2.5 MV and oscillating frequency up to 35 MHz,the amplitude of output voltage was controlled by adjusting the breakdown voltage of sharpening gap;and the length of bus bar in GIS was increased to reduce the influence of circuit inductance.A capacitive sensor with a RC integrator was developed for measurements of VFTO.The result of the test indicates that the capacitive sensor is able to measure the VFTO waveform with higher accuracy.

Abstract:In many cases, reactors are directly connected to the GIS bus, the circuit breaker operation may generate VFTO, which would propagate towards the bushing along the bus in the form of travelling wave, and be coupled to the outside terminals. The reactor as well as the other equipment connected with the reactor may be subjected to the dangerous stress. This paper computes the waveforms and the maximal amplitudes of such case, and analyses the influence factors. The suppression effect of MOA is also discussed.

Abstract:Gas insulated switchgear(GIS)has been widely used in electrical power system.During the on-site lightning impulse withstand voltage test of GIS,when the underproof GIS discharges,high-amplitude oscillating overvoltage will take place,which may threaten the intact equipments.In this paper,we developed a ATP-EMTP transient analyzing model of ultra-high-voltage GIS on-site lightning impulse withstand voltage test system and fault arc.The over-voltage amplitude and its restraining method has been investigated.The results show that the calculated voltage waveforms matches well with the test waveforms,indicating that the fault arc model can simulate the discharging process accurately.The fringe nodes in the test system will cause the total reflection of transient voltage,making the over-voltage amplitude higher than 2 400 kV.The over-voltage amplitude on top of the no-load bushing can be restrained after the introduction of the low-damping transient voltage restrainer.The parameter Cr=800 pF、Rr=100 Ω is suggested,which can effectively make the oscillating voltage lower than 2 400 kV.

Abstract:For fully understanding the characteristics of very fast transient overvoltage(VFTO) in ultra high voltage(UHV) gas insulated switchgear(GIS),it is necessary to set up full-scale 1 000 kV GIS Test circuit.Based on the computer simulation of the VFTO and comparison between different circuit schemes of UHV GIS substation and planned 1 000 kV GIS test circuit,it is suggested that the 1 000 kV GIS test circuit should be equipped with a branch bus which could cause more severe VFTO than that tested without the branch bus.A new 1 000 kV GIS test circuit with a branch bus,different from the one presented in national or IEC standards,is put forward.Investigation and designing were made for the test circuit with the arrangement of measurement points and the selection of the disconnectors with different switching speeds.The test results obtained with the constructed GIS test circuit show that the influence of branch bus on VFTO is in accordance with the anticipation of design,either in waveforms or in statistical regularity.The test circuit showed an excellent performance in the research on 1 000 kV GIS VFTO.
Effect of Breaker Structural Parameters on Very Fast-fronted Transient Overvoltage Waveform in GIS

Abstract:The double-fracture circuit-breaker with two grading capacitors is used in gas insulated substation(GIS) at 550kV and above voltage levels.This article focuses on the effect of some parameters of circuit-breaker on very fast-fronted transient overvoltage(VFTO) waveform in GIS,such as the shunt capacitance of circuit breakers,floating bus,grounding switch status and so on.First,a simplified GIS model considering the circuit breaker structure was established.The analytical solution in frequency domain of node voltage was derived out from this model.Then,the effects of these parameters were analyzed.The results showed that when the capacitances of shunt capacitors or the capacitance to ground or the length of bus between circuit-breaker and disconnector increased,the main frequency of VFTO decreased,but the amplitude of each frequency at different nods had different variations,indicating that the amplitude of VFTO at the end of the no load bus decreased,the rising edge tended to be gentle;the amplitude and the gradient of the rising edge at the entrance of transformer slightly changed,but the rising time increased.When the grounding switch was off,the voltage between the breaker fractures was low,but the voltage to ground might be higher;when the grounding switch was closed,overvoltage between the fractures and fractures to ground might occur due to resonance.Therefore these phenomena should be paid attention to in the design of circuit-breakers.

Abstract:Gas insulated substation is widely applied in power system because of many advantages, including high reliability, easy maintenance, relatively less space etc. However, very fast transient (VFT) process can be produced, during the operating of disconnector switch, earth switch and circuit breaker. VFT is mainly characterized as very fast transient overvoltage on GIS bus-bar bushing, and as the raise of transient earth voltage on GIS enclosure, and as transient electromagnetic field (TEM) around the GIS. In this paper, the mechanisms about TEM generation and TEM production, caused by VFT, are analyzed. Meanwhile, the influences of VFT on the cable and the transformer connected with GIS are studied.
