Abstract:This study aims to characterize the structures of two commonly used carbon reducing agents in industrial silicon smelting and analyze the mechanism of structural changes in different carbon sources during the graphitization process. The findings indicate that during the reaction at the temperature range of 1300–1600 °C, each carbon reducing agent does not reach the graphitization stage but exhibits a clear trend of graphitization, with no distinct stratification in the carbon layer structure. Correlation analysis reveals that the area ratio of the D peak to the G peak in the Raman spectrum can serve as an effective indicator of the graphitization trend of carbon materials in the graphitization-like stage. The temperatures at which bituminous coal, charcoal, non-caking coal, and weak-caking coal enter the graphitization stage are 1982, 2457, 2097, and 1889 °C, respectively. Charcoal, characterized by its high content of alkali metal minerals and porous structure, exhibits enhanced chemical reaction activity, leading to a decreased graphitization reaction rate. In contrast, bituminous coal, non-caking coal, and weak-caking coal, being coal materials, show similar overall trends in microstructure changes. The graphitization process in these materials is accelerated by the presence of mineral components, resulting in a greater graphitization ability than charcoal under the same conditions.
