Abstract:Calorimetric measurements of AC loss and hence interstrand contact resistance (ICR), were measured on three samples of Rutherford cable wound with Cu-stabilized jelly-roll type unplated Nb3Al strand. One of the cable types was furnished with a thin core of AISI 316L stainless steel and the other two were both uncored but insulated in different ways. The cables were subjected to a room-temperature-applied uniaxial pressure of 12 MPa that was maintained during the reaction heat treatment (RHT), then vacuum impregnated with CTD 101 epoxy, and repressurized to 100 MPa during AC-loss measurement. The measurements were performed at 4.2 K in a sinusoidal field of amplitude 400 mT at frequencies of 1 to 90 mHz (no DC-bias field) that was applied both perpendicular and parallel to the face of the cable (the face-on, FO, and edge-on, EO, directions, respectively). For the cored cable the FO-measured effective ICR (FO-ICR), was 5.27 . Those for the uncored cables were less than 0.08 . As shown previously for NbTi- and Nb3Sn-based Rutherford cables, the FO-ICR can be significantly increased by the insertion of a core, although in this case it is still below the range recommended for accelerator-magnet use. Post-measurement dissection of one of the cables showed that the impregnating resin had permeated between the strands and coated the core with a thin, insulating layer excepting for some sintered points of contact. In the uncored cables the strands were coated with resin except for the points of interstrand contact. It is suggested that in the latter case this tendency for partial coating leads to a processing-sensitive FO-ICR.

Abstract:The stability and AC loss of NbTi cable-in-conduit conductors (CICCs) is largely determined by the interstrand contact resistance (Rc). Rc is predominantly established by the strand surface properties. Five 36-strand CICCs, fully identical except for the plating of the strand surface or the presence of an internal CuNi shell, are prepared and tested. Beside strands with bare copper surface, chromium, nickel and oxidised stabrite (Sn95Ag5) coatings are applied. The effect of an epoxy curing heat treatment (HT) and electromagnetic loading on Rc is simulated and measured. Applying different strand coatings in NbTi CICCs, offers a broad range in Rc, from 7 to 430 nΩ m, while the interstrand nτ's vary between 64 and 2 ms.

Abstract:The Rutherford cable was made of 12 single-core MgB2in-situ wires with an NbTi resistive barrier and a CuNi outer sheath. The uniformity of the wires and cables was analyzed by X-ray microtomography. Critical currents of wire's and cable's samples were measured at 4.2 K in the outer fields 4.0 - 8.0 T and at 15-25 K and fields 1.0 - 5.5 T. Magnetization AC losses were measured at temperatures of 20-40 K, external fields 0.001-0.1 T and frequencies of 72 and 144 Hz. The obtained results show high engineering current density and reduced losses in MgB2 cable, which can be especially interesting for windings of superconducting motors or generators.

Abstract:In the production of Rutherford cables, Nb3Sn strands are subjected to severe deformation; and to evaluate this degradation prior to cabling, uniaxial rolling with a thickness reduction of ∼15 % has often been used. The effects of this deformation on superconducting performance differ significantly between wire designs. In this article, wire deformation behavior is investigated by image analysis of electron micrographs, and the resulting degradation of critical current and residual resistance ratio is quantified, for several designs of internal tin (RRP and distributed tin) and powder-in-tube wire in use or under study at CERN for the HL-LHC upgrade and High Field Magnets program. The suitability of uniaxial rolling as a predictor of cabling degradation is assessed and recommendations are made for improved testing procedures.

Simulation of Rutherford Cable AC Loss and Magnetization with the Coupled Axial and Transverse Currents Method

Abstract:The coupled axial and transverse currents (CATI) method was recently introduced to model the AC loss and magnetization in twisted composite superconducting strands with low computational cost and high accuracy. This method involves two-dimensional finite element (FE) models coupled with circuit equations representing the periodicity of the strand. In this paper, we propose to adapt the CATI method to Rutherford cables, which are periodic structures made of transposed superconducting strands. We focus on reproducing the interstrand coupling currents flowing across contact resistances between the strands and we analyze the associated AC loss. We show that results of a reference three-dimensional FE model are accurately reproduced with a strongly reduced computational cost.

Abstract:It is important to predict AC loss in and NbTi cable-in-conduit-conductor (CICC) reliably for the design and operation of large superconducting coils. The hysteresis loss in the superconducting filaments and coupling loss within strands and among strands in a cable or composite are dominant ac losses in superconducting magnets. The coupling loss in a superconductor can be characterized by identifying the coupling constant time . To reduce the coupling loss, all the strands (superconductor and Cu) in KSTAR (Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advance Research) are chromium plated with thickness of . The ac losses of PF1, PF5 and PF6 coils has been measured by calorimetric method while applying trapezoidal current pulses with various ramp rate from 0.5 kA/s to 2 kA/s. The coupling time constants for coils are ms and the values are not co-related with the coil size, the time constants for NbTi coil is 30 ms.

Abstract:During Rutherford cable production the wires are plastically deformed and their initially round shape is distorted. Using X-ray absorption tomography we have determined the 3D shape of an unreacted Nb3Sn 11 T dipole Rutherford cable, and of a reacted and impregnated Nb3Sn cable double stack. State-of-the-art image processing was applied to correct for tomographic artefacts caused by the large cable aspect ratio, for the segmentation of the individual wires and subelement bundles inside the wires, and for the calculation of the wire cross sectional area and shape variations. The 11 T dipole cable cross section oscillates by 2% with a frequency of 1.24 mm (1/80 of the transposition pitch length of the 40 wire cable). A comparatively stronger cross sectional area variation is observed in the individual wires at the thin edge of the keystoned cable where the wire aspect ratio is largest.

Abstract:This paper studies the development of the Nb3Sn Rutherford cable for high-energy accelerators of Western Super-conducting Technologies Company Ltd. (WST). In the first stage of cable development of WST, the cable is made of 18 Nb3Sn strands with a strand diameter of 0.818 mm. The experiment focuses on the cable parameters (filling factor of 83-91%, and a pitch length of 45-60 mm) to achieve both a minimal critical current degradation of the strand and a good mechanical stability of the cable for coil winding. Furthermore, the cable parameters laws are proposed. After cabling, the J(c) degradation is smaller than 5% and RRR (273 K/20 K) is more than 200. Last but not least, the results of the critical current degradation, the cabling parameters, and the microstructure of Rutherford Cable are discussed.

Abstract:The development of high-field accelerator magnets capable of providing 16 T dipolar fields is an indispensable technological breakthrough needed for the 100 TeV energy-frontier targeted by the Future Circular Collider (FCC). As these magnets will be based on Nb$_3$Sn Rutherford cables, the degradation of the conductor performance due to the large electro-magnetic stresses becomes a parameter with a profound impact on the magnet design. In this work, we investigated the stress dependence and the irreversible reduction of the critical current under compressive transverse load in high performance Powder-In-Tube (PIT) Nb$_3$Sn wires. Tests were performed in magnetic fields ranging between 16 T and 19 T on wires that were resin-impregnated similarly to the wires in the Rutherford cables of accelerator magnets. The scope was to predict the degradation of the cable under stress from a single-wire experiment. Interestingly, the irreversible stress limit, $\sigma_{irr}$, defined as the stress level corresponding to a permanent reduction of the critical current by 5$\%$ with respect to its initial value, was found to depend on the applied magnetic field. This observation allowed us to shed light on the mechanism dominating the irreversible reduction of the wire performance and to compare and reconcile our results with the irreversible limits measured on Rutherford cables, typically tested at fields below 12 T.

Abstract:High Temperature Superconductor (HTS) materials can operate at higher magnetic fields up to 20 T with high critical current and higher operating temperature, compared to low temperature superconductors (LTS). A Highly Flexible REBCO Cable (HFRC) is introduced at the Institute of Plasma Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (ASIPP); a cabling method that is suitable for REBCO HTS tape having anisotropic material properties in its thin REBCO layer. This type of HTS superconducting cable shows high potential for applications in nuclear fusion. The alternating currents and magnetic fields in tokamak type of fusion magnets, cause AC power losses in such cables, which can provoke instability of the conductor by induced currents and increase the temperature. As a first step in characterizing the electromagnetic (EM) performance of an HFRC cable, the AC loss and contact resistance of the HFRC prototype cable were measured at the University of Twente. The measurements were done in liquid helium (4.2 K) with AC magnetic fields, applied perpendicular to the cable's long axis. The AC loss was measured simultaneously by a calibrated gas flow calorimeter utilizing the helium boil-off method, and by the magnetization method using pick-up coils. For the applied test conditions, no coupling loss could be distinguished as a part of the overall AC loss. It is suggested that this might be explained by the shielding of the conductor interior from the applied magnetic field by the outer tape layer due to the high critical current density of the REBCO tape, leading to a high penetration field.

Abstract:The cable-in-conduit conductor (CICC) technology has been widely used in large scale superconducting magnet. The Short-Twist-Pitch (STP) design was aimed to avoid the conductor degradation during electromagnetic and thermal cycling. But manufacture of STP CICC deforms the cabled strands significantly. Indentations appear on superconducting strands after cabling and compaction. The conductor used for China Fusion Engineering Test Reactor (CFETR) magnet will be subjected to much higher Lorentz force than ITER. The STP CICC will be the first choice for the conductor design, since it showed no observed current sharing temperature T-cs degradation after electromagnetic cycling. In order to estimate the effects of indentation on the superconducting and mechanical properties of Nb3Sn strands, series measurements have been done on an internal-tin (IT) Nb3Sn strand, fabricated by Western Superconducting Technologies Co., Ltd (WST). The strand was artificially indented and cut to several sections for different kinds of measurements, which mainly included the critical current I-c, versus axial strain measurements with Pacman device and stress-strain tests. The results show that the indentation has less impact on I-c, but more impact on mechanical performance. The sample preparation, test results and analysis have been described in details.

Abstract:Within the framework of magnetic confinement fusion, several projects worldwide are demonstrating the possibility of integrating high-temperature superconductors (HTS) in the coil systems. HTS-based technologies are highly attractive for practical applications because they can extend the operating margins of fusion coils in terms of higher temperatures, transport currents and magnetic fields. Based on the results achieved with the twisted-stacked tape cable, we have designed a novel low-loss HTS sector cable-in-conduit conductor, with a target of 60 kA at 4.5 K, 18 T, which is presently of interest for the DEMO Central Solenoid coil. In HTS cables, the AC losses can represent a significant limiting factor, therefore they must be taken into consideration both in the design phase and in the assessment of the overall magnet thermal budget. In this work, to assess the loss behavior and to optimize the cable design, we have explored different aspect ratios and arrangements of the stacked tapes within the cable layout. The magnetization losses are calculated with a 2D finite-element model based on the T-A formulation and analytical approximations based on the Brandt-Halse critical state model. Specifically, we have developed an analytical formulation that allows for the calculation of the instantaneous power losses in HTS stacked cables with a limited number of tapes per stack, achieving sufficient accuracy at high fields. The analytical model enables a sufficiently accurate assessment of the heat deposited on the conductor during those particular instants of a plasma scenario where the variation of the field is very high, such as during the critical initial discharge period of the plasma initiation.

Abstract:Due to the higher thermal stability and the ability to be operated at liquid-helium-free temperature, the HTS cable show great promise for conduction-cooled tokamak magnet applications. However, the YBCO tapes embedded within the slot produce an axial strain, leading to a degradation in critical current. Meantime, the critical current is also strongly influenced by the field and its incidence angle on the tape. Understanding the impact of the coupled electromagnetic-mechanical effect on critical current degradation and magnetization loss is paramount. In this study, the coupling mechanical-electromagnetic critical current estimation model was first built based on the longitudinal strain model and tape its own in-field property. Subsequently, we analyze the DC critical current and the dynamic magnetization loss based on the 2D T-A model. Through the integration of the non-uniform magnetic field and longitudinal strain, the distribution of the critical current density could be evaluated. This enabled the complex current distribution and magnetization loss to be monitored effectively. The results of this study will be employed in the further optimization of CICC conductor in the future.
Analysis of AC Transport Loss in Conductor on Round Core Cables

Abstract:Abstract The conductor on round core (CORC) cable wound with second-generation high-temperature superconducting (HTS) tapes is a promising cable candidate with superiority in current capacity and mechanical strength. The composing superconductors and the former are tightly assembled, resulting in a strong electro-magnetic interaction between them. Correspondingly, the AC loss is influenced by the cable structure. In this paper, a 3D finite-element model of the CORC cable is first built, and it includes the complex geometry, the angular dependence of critical current and the periodic settings. The modelling is verified by the measurements conducted for the transport loss of a two-layer CORC cable. Subsequently, the simulated results show that the primary transport loss shifts from the former to the superconductors as the current increases. Meanwhile, the loss exhibited in the outer layer is larger than that of the inner layer, which is caused by the shielding effect among layers and the former. This also leads to the current inhomogeneity in CORC cables. In contrast with the two-layer case, the simulated single-layer structure indicates stronger frequency dependence because the eddy current loss in the copper former is always dominant without the cancellation of the opposite-wound layers. The core eddy current of the single structure is denser on the outer surface. Finally, the AC transport losses among a straight HTS tape, a two-layer cable and a single-layer cable are compared. The two-layer structure is confirmed to minimise the loss, meaning an even-numbered arrangement makes better use of the cable space and superconducting materials. Having illustrated the electro-magnetic behaviour inside the CORC cable, this work is an essential reference for the structure design of CORC cables.

Abstract:The second generation of high temperature superconductivity (HTS) is one of the candidate materials for future superconducting cables (such as CORC), CICC conductors and high field magnets due to its high current carrying performance and excellent mechanical strength. Currently, it has been demonstrated that the utilization of REBCO multi-filamentary tapes in the fabrication of CORC cables can further reduce AC losses. This study involved the preparation of various types of REBCO multi-filamentary tapes through reel-to-reel ultraviolet picosecond laser cutting technology, as well as the manual winding of multiple single-layer CORC cable samples. This work focused on the impact of core diameter on the current-carrying performance of REBCO multi-filamentary tapes under self-field conditions at 77 K. The results indicate that the critical current ( I C ) of REBCO multi-filamentary tapes decreases as the core diameter decreases. Furthermore, the decrease in I C becomes more significant with an increasing number of cores. When the cable core diameter is 4.6 mm, the critical current of the 3-filament tape is 180.49 A with an n -value of 24.84, which is only a 3.1 % recession compared to the critical current of the commercialized tape. The conclusion of this paper will provide a certain data reference for the subsequent selection of CORC cable core size prepared by REBCO multi-filamentary tapes.

Abstract:In the new concept design of the circular electron positron collider detector, the magnet should be an ultrathin HTS solenoid with maximum radiation transparency. A novel aluminum-stabilized stacked REBCO tape cable (ASTC) was proposed and developed. The advantages of aluminum's high residual resistivity ratio, high thermal conductivity, and high transparency for particles, combined with the advantages of REBCO tape's high engineering current density, high strength and large temperature margin, constitute a suitable cable option for future detector magnets. The ASTC uses REBCO tapes in a stacked structure, which are wrapped and bound with metal tapes, and then covered with aluminum stabilizer by coextrusion processing. By optimizing the process parameters, such as preheating temperature, extrusion speed, Al outer layer thickness, and improving the internal structure of the cable, the critical current of the ASTC prototype cable is increased to 905 A@ 77 K, self-field. The degradation of the tape is less than 20%. This article presents the development process of the ASTC cable, discusses the challenges encountered during cable processing, and proposes corresponding solutions.

Fabrication of Low AC Loss Cu0.5Mn-Based NbTi Superconducting Strands

Abstract:The Cu-0.5 wt.% Mn alloy is selected as the inter-filament matrix in NbTi superconducting strand with low AC Loss. Three types of NbTi strand with the filament number of 10 800, 12 960 and 33 696 were prepared based on high homogeneity Nb47Ti alloy, pure Nb sheet, high purity oxygen free copper and Cu-0.5 wt.% Mn alloy. Heat treatment with 3-5 intermediate annealings has been applied to increase the Jc of the strands. When the number of annealings increases from 3 to 5, Jc raises from 2295 to 2958 A/mm 2 for the 10 800 filament strand, and from ∼2500 to ∼2800 A/mm 2 for the 12 960 filament and 33696 filament strands. As the filament number increases from 10800 to 33696, the ‘ n ’ values keep the same level, demonstrating that no “sausage like” or “nodular like” filaments exist in the final strands. When the filament diameter of the strand is reduced from 4.6 μm to 2.6 μm, the hysteresis loss decreased from 42.8 mJ/cm 3 to 17.3 mJ/cm 3 at ± 3 T&4.2 K. Based on this research, WST has obtained a stable mass production technology of the strands. Using heat treatment with 4 annealings, the different batches of the strands with Jc ranged from 2600 to 2800 A/mm 2 have been produced with piece length level of 1-3 kilometer.

Abstract:Superconducting arrays often require specialized, high-density cryogenic cabling capable of transporting electrical signals across temperature stages with minimal loss, crosstalk, and thermal conductivity. We report improvements to the design and fabrication of previously published superconducting 53 wt% Niobium (Nb)-47 wt% titanium (Ti) flexible coaxial ribbon cables. We used 3-D electromagnetic simulations to inform design changes to improve the characteristic impedance of the cable and the connector transition. We increased the center conductor diameter from 0.003 to 0.005 in, which lowered the cable characteristic impedance from 60 to 53 . This change had a negligible impact on the computed heat load, which we estimate to be 5 nW per trace from 1 K to 100 mK with a 1-ft cable. This is approximately half the heat load calculated for the smallest commercially available superconducting coax. We also modified the transition board to include a capacitive coupling between the upper ground plane and signal traces that mitigates the inductive transition. We tested these changes in a 5-trace, 1-ft long cable at 4 K and found the microwave transmission improved from 6 to 1.5 dB of attenuation at 8 GHz. This loss is comparable to commercial superconducting coax and 3× lower than commercial NbTi-on-polyimide flex cables at 8 GHz. The nearest-neighbor forward crosstalk remained −50 dB. We compare key performance metrics with commercially available superconducting coax and NbTi-on-polyimide flex cables and we share initial progress on commercialization of this technology by Maybell Quantum Industries.

Abstract:Rare-earth barium copper oxide (REBCO) coated conductors are of interest for fabricating high performance cables and magnets for magnetic field B > 22.5 T. One critical challenge is the control of the current sharing between conductor tapes to enable self-protection to take place when a localized disturbance (hot spot) appears in the cable or magnet coil. Current sharing can be enhanced by reducing the inter-strand contact resistance (ICR). In this work, we explore ICR reduction with several tape surface modification techniques. Under a pressure of 13.3 MPa the contact efficiency, int of a ten-layer REBCO tape stack was measured to be 106 $mu$cm2 at 4.2 K and 145 cm2 at 77 K. Further increases in pressure had only a small effect on ICR. To further reduce ICR, we proposed two other techniques: (1) Heat treatment of the ten-layer YBCO coated conductor tape stack at 300 C for 30 min and under various pressures. We concluded that 20 MPa was the minimum pressure required to initiate substantial conductor-to-conductor sintering and an optimum result was achieved by a processing pressure higher than 23.4 MPa which produced int of 10 cm2 at 4.2 K and 19 cm2 at 77 K when measured under 13.3 MPa. (2) The second approach was to Ni-plate the REBCO tapes. The acidic plating solution removes the native oxide on the Cu surface and the process replaces it with a thin layer of Ni. The result was an int of 2.7 cm2 at 4.2 K and 4.6 cm2 at 77 K. Both techniques led to int that were relatively insensitive to changes in temperature. We were able to achieve int < 10 cm2 with sintering under pressure, and int < 3 cm2 with Ni electroplating alone.

Electromagnetic Assessment and AC Losses of Triaxial Cables with Multiple 2G-HTS Layers Per Phase

Abstract:For an accurate estimation of the AC losses of superconducting triaxial cables, we present a 2D model capable to provide a global assessment of multi-layer triaxial cables, validated against the AC-losses on single-phase cables provided by the VNIIKP Cable Institute. Four models are presented, the first being a single-phase cable of 50 tapes and the others being three triaxial cables made of up to 135 coated conductors distributed in up to 9 layers. A systematic study is devised, where the number of layers per phase increases from 1 to 3, with at least 14 tapes distributed across each layer of the first (innermost) phase, 15 in the secondary (middle) phase, and 16 in the third (outermost) phase, respectively. Remarkably, our results reveal that the simple strategy of considering an unbalanced distribution for the amplitudes of the applied current, can generally balance the magnetic field between the three phases even for the bilayer and trilayer cables, resulting in negligible magnetic leaks in all situations. Besides, our simulations allow to see for the first time how the transport and magnetization currents distribute across the thickness of all the superconducting tapes, from which we have found that the AC-losses of the 2nd phase is generally higher than at the other phases at low to moderate transport currents Itr < 0.8 Ic. Nevertheless, depending on whether the Ic of the SC tapes at the 3rd phase layers is lower than the one at the 2nd phase, the layers at the third phase can exhibit a considerable increment on the AC losses, as result of the considered magneto angular anisotropy of the HTS tapes, which lead to intriguing electromagnetic features that suggest a practical threshold for the applied transport current, being it 0.8 Ic. Likewise, the relative change in the AC-losses per adding layers, per phase, and as a function of the applied current is disclosed.
