Abstract:The use of biomass fly ash (BFA) as a substitute for cementitious materials is an effective way of recycling waste products. However, the presence of unburned particles in biomass fly ash limits its utilization in cement. Therefore, in this paper, straw biomass fly ash (SBFA) was combusted at 400 °C, 500 °C, 600 °C, and 700 °C to determine the optimal combustion conditions for SBFA. Several analytical methods, including laser interference, BET, X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and contact angle tests, were utilized to examine the physical and chemical characteristics of the ash burned at the four tested combustion temperatures. The performance of the composite cement was assessed through consistency and strength experiments. The results showed that SBFA had the best pozzolanic activity and smaller pores under the 500 °C recombustion treatment. The total pore volume of the ash treated at 500 °C was 0.084 cm 3 /g, and the 28-day (compressive) strength activity index of the ash was 93.2%.
