Abstract:Nanosized zirconium carbide (ZrC) was synthesized successfully by a novel hydrothermal precursor conversion method using chelation of polydentate glucose as the carbon source. During the pyrolysis, the core-matrix structure of intimate nanosized ZrO2 and amorphous carbon mixture forms, resulting in short diffusion path and limit of grain growth. ZrC first appears at a much lower temperature of 1200°C and completes conversion at 1400°C in comparison with that of precursor without hydrothermal treatment. By raising the heating temperature to 1600°C, oxygen content could be reduced (0.55wt%) with a low residual carbon content (2.3wt%), and the average size of the spherical crystallite increases from 100nm to 200nm. Based on above ZrC powders, the additive-free ceramic with 99.4% relative density by spark plasma sintering (SPS) at a low temperature of 1700°C has been achieved.

Abstract:High-performance submicron ZrSiO4 powder is prepared by a sol-gel-microemulsion-hydrothermal method (S-G-M-H). In this method, the transformation from sol to gel is constrained in the droplets of the microemulsion and accelerated by the hydrothermal process. The interface change of sol/oil to gel/oil makes the emulsion automatic demulsificate without demulsiflers, which means that the organic solvents can be recycled. The preparation process is low-cost and environmentally friendly. The results show that the synthesized ZrSiO4 powder owns the optimized median diameter (D50) of 0.67 mu m under the optimized preparation condition of hydrothermal treatment at 150 degrees C for 7 h. The ZrSiO4 particles are the agglomeration of the primary particles with a size of about 100 nm. As an opacifler, 15 wt% submicron ZrSiO4 powder added give a whiteness value of 85 to the opaque glaze, which is significantly better than commercial ZrSiO4 powder with the same amount added. Meanwhile, the obtained submicron powder has excellent sintering activity. After sintered at 1300 degrees C for 2 h, the ZrSiO4 pellets has the density of 4.32 g cm(-3) and the porosity of 0.31%. Abstract:A hydrothermal method was employed to synthesize the precursor of nano-zirconium carbide, which was subsequently heat treated at high temperatures under vacuum to obtain finely dispersed nanometer-sized zirconium carbide powder through a carbothermic reduction reaction. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) was utilized to examine the microstructure of the precursors obtained under different hydrothermal conditions and carbon contents. The effects of different heat treatment temperatures on the microstructure of the products were analyzed. Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) confirmed the boundary coating structure of the hydrothermal precursor and provided insights into the phase structure of the nanometer-sized zirconium carbide. The reaction mechanism and temperature involved in the carbothermic reaction process were determined through calculations. Furthermore, the energy, phase and microstructure of the reaction were investigated using Thermogravimetric Analysis (TG-DSC) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) at different temperatures. The obtained results revealed that the zirconium carbide precursor was synthesized via the hydrothermal method exhibited a coreshell structure with a boundary coating, which not only ensured uniform contact between C and ZrO2 particles but also facilitated the formation of zirconium carbide. The results show that the most suitable process parameters are Zr/C 1: 7, 240 degrees C and 24 h. The thermodynamic calculation results show that ZrO2 combines with carbon to form CO and ZrC when the temperature reaches 1656.56 degrees C. As the temperature rises, CO reacts with ZrO2 to form ZrC and CO2. TG-DSC shows that the carbothermal reduction reaction starts at 1100 degrees C and reaches its peak at 1418 degrees C. XRD analysis confirms that when the temperature reached 1450 degrees C ZrC appeared. At 1600 degrees C, the phase transition of ZrC is basically completed. TEM images showed that the synthesized zirconium carbide particles were about 30 nm.

Abstract:Nano-crystalized HfC was successfully synthesized based on an aqueous solution-derived precursor using hafnium tetrachloride and sucrose as raw materials. The precursor can be converted to pure phase HfC after pyrolysis at ∼600 °C and subsequent carbothermal reduction reaction at ∼1600 °C, with a ceramic yield of around 46.3%. Reaction mechanisms of the synthesis process are revealed based on FT-IR, TG-DSC, TEM analysis and thermodynamic calculations, etc. The obtained HfC nanoparticles possess an equiaxial shape with an average particle size of ∼73 nm. Oxygen content of the as-synthesized HfC powders is as low as 0.64 wt%, which exists in the form of an amorphous Hf-O-C thin layer covering the surface of the HfC particles. This feasible and promising method for HfC particle synthesis is believed to be suitable for the fabrication of continuous fibers reinforced HfC ceramic matrix composites.

Abstract:Ultra-fine zirconium carbide (ZrC) powders have been synthesized by carbothermal reduction reactions using inorganic precursors zirconium oxychloride (ZrOCl2 · 8H2O) as sources of zirconium and phenolic resin as the carbon source. The reactions were substantially completed at relatively lower temperatures (∼1400 °C/1 h) and the synthesized powders had a small average crystallite size (<200 nm) and a large specific area (54 m2/g). The oxygen content of the powder synthesized at 1400 °C/1 h was less than 1.0 wt%. The thermodynamic change process in the ZrO2–C system and the synthesis mechanism were studied.

Abstract:Zirconium carbide (ZrC) and hafnium carbide (HfC) powders were produced by the carbothermal reduction reaction of carbon and the corresponding metal oxide (ZrO2 and HfO2, respectively). Solution-based processing was used to achieve a fine-scale (i.e., nanometer-level) mixing of the reactants. The reactions were substantially completed at relatively low temperatures (<1500°C) and the resulting products had small average crystallite sizes (∼50–130 nm). However, these products contained some dissolved oxygen in the metal carbide lattice and higher temperatures were required to complete the carbothermal reduction reactions. Dry-pressed compacts prepared using ZrC-based powders with ∼100 nm crystallite size could be pressurelessly sintered to ∼99% relative density at 1950°C.

Abstract:This work focuses on the synthesis of tetragonal zirconia (ZrO2) nanocrystallites with diameters of 5 nm by a simple hydrothermal process in the presence of hydrazine hydrate. Structural characterization of the ZrO2 products using X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy revealed that the predominant crystal phase was the tetragonal phase. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy images further showed that that the diameter of the majority of the tetragonal ZrO2 nanocrystallites was < 5 nm. Furthermore, we discussed the mechanism of the hydrothermal process and the critical roles of hydrazine hydrate in the hydrothermal formation of the small-sized ZrO2 nanocrystallites.

Abstract:Zirconia/alumina composites are a family of structural ceramics with excellent mechanical properties. In order to improve the engineering reliability of this kind of composites, the uniform spatial distribution of the two phases is necessary. One of the effective methods to achieve this goal is to synthesize uniform zirconia–alumina composite nano powders. Here, we report mechanochemical synthesis of zirconia–alumina composite nano powders, in which dehydration and crystallization of Zr–Y–Al hydroxide can be achieved under milling conditions, leading to the formation of the tetragonal zirconia phase with supersaturated Al3+. The mechanochemically synthesized powders have the uniform element distribution and a fine primary crystallite size of around 11 nm. After sintering at 1400°C, t‐ZrO2/α‐Al2O3 composite with the uniform phase distribution and grain size distribution could be obtained. To uncover the full benefits of these supersaturated composite powders in ceramic processing, future work could be done to break up the deagglomerations and improve the sinterability of the mechanochemically synthesized zirconia/alumina powders.

Abstract:Ultra-fine and high-pure zirconium diboride powders were prepared by carbothermal reduction boronization of zirconia/boron carbide/carbon mixtures. Fine-scale mixing of the reactants was achieved by solution-based processing in which zirconium oxychloride (ZrOCl2 center dot 8H(2)O) as the zirconia-bearing precursor was precipitated in the suspension of boron carbide (B4C) and carbon powders in water. The carbothermal reduction boronization reaction was substantially completed at relatively low temperatures (< 1600 degrees C) and the resulting products (ZrB2 powders) had small average grain sizes (1 similar to 2 mu m) and high purity (>99.6 wt%). The experiments indicated that excessive B4C and C were necessary during the carbothermal reduction boronization because of volatilization of boron and carbon elements. The effects of temperature and holding time on the synthesis of ZrB2 powders were also discussed.

Abstract:Abstract Zirconium compounds has been widely attention over the last decades due to its excellent physical and chemical properties. Zirconium nitride nanopowders were synthesized via a simple direct carbothermic nitridation process of internal gel derived zirconia in the presence of nano-sized carbon black. The effects of reaction temperature, dwell time and molar ratio of carbon black to Zr (C/Zr) on the phase composition, grain size and crystal parameters of products were studied. Based upon the analysis of crystallite phase evolution and microstructure characterization, it was found that zirconium oxynitride is intermediate product and then O atoms in oxynitride were extracted by oxygen getter, carbon black. Anion sites were directly replaced by N atoms to form rock-salt type nitride in carbothermic nitridation process.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline ZrC has been prepared via a convenient route by the reaction of metallic magnesium powder with zirconium oxide and lithium carbonate in an autoclave at 600°C. X-ray powder diffraction pattern indicated that the product was cubic zirconium carbide, and the cell constant was a=4.693Å. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) image showed particles with an average size of about 30nm. The product was also studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). It had good oxidation resistance below 250°C in air.

The effects of nitridation temperature, holding time, and Mg:ZrO2 mole ratio on the powder properties were investigated. Abstract:Nano-zirconia exhibits excellent mechanical properties (fracture toughness, hardness and flexural strength), thermal performance (thermal conductivity), optical properties and biological properties for various ceramic-based applications. Supercritical hydrothermal synthesis technology is an advanced and environmental-friendly method for preparing nanoscale powders. In this paper, the formation and crystallization of nano-zirconia during supercritical hydrothermal synthesis were systematically investigated. Different precursors (zirconium nitrate, zirconium oxychloride, zirconium acetate) reacted in supercritical water and the quality of nano-zirconia in different systems were comprehensively evaluated using XRD, TEM, IR, BET analysis. Finally, the most suitable precursor type was identified and the reaction path as well as crystallization mechanisms of different precursors were revealed.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline SiC powders were prepared at low temperature (less than or equal to1300degreesC) by carbothermal reduction reactions in silica/carbon mixtures. Fine-scale mixing of the reactants was achieved by using solution-based processing. Mechanistic studies indicated that the SiC formed in accordance with the "shrinking core" reaction model in which the rate was controlled by the reaction of silicon monoxide vapor at the carbon surface.

Abstract:A new method is put forward to prepare nanometer zirconia base solid solution by exothermal solid-state synthesis. This method is realized by agitating solid mixture of sodium hydroxide, zirconium oxychloride, and yttrium/calcium nitride. Fresh and final powders are studied by X-ray fluorescence, X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. The results show the obtained tetragonal/cubic zirconia solid solution nanopowders are highly pure and distribute around 5 nm. It is suggested that the coordinated water of zirconium oxvchloride acts as micro medium and the nuclei of solid solution are formed under the superalkaline environment and grow during heat treatment. This method may be useful to prepare other metal oxide nano powders.

Abstract:To explore the application of SiC nanowires (SiCnws) in ZrB2 based ceramic materials, a facile approach is reported to in situ synthesize homogeneously dispersed SiCnws in ZrB2-ZrC-SiC-ZrO2 nanopowders by pyrolyzing a B-Si-Zr containing sol precursor impregnated in polyurethane sponge. The sponge was used to provide porous skeletons for the growth of SiC nanowires and facilitate their uniform distribution in the powders. After heattreatment of the precursor with a Si/Zr atomic ratio of 10 at 1500 degrees C for 2 h, ZrB2-ZrC-SiC-ZrO2 ceramic powders were obtained with an even and fine particle size of similar to 100 nm. The SiCnws were in a diameter of similar to 100 nm with a controllable length varying from tens to hundreds of microns by increasing the silicon content in the precursor. Moreover, the produced SiCnws were in high purity, and homogeneously dispersed in the hybrid nanopowders. The study can open up a feasible route to overcome the critical fabrication process in SiCnws reinforced ceramic matrix composites. (C) 2020 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract:Porous zirconium carbide (ZrC) nanoparticles were synthesized by carbothermal reduction using MOF-801, a zirconium-based metal-organic framework (Zr-MOF), and sucrose, which serves as an environment-friendly carbon source. The sucrose was adsorbed into the pores of MOF-801 for adjusting the carbon content. The results showed that the final ZrC particles retained the morphology of the initial MOF-801 particles with a round shape and a uniform size of 261 ± 37 nm. Importantly, the material was able to maintain its high surface area up to 1500 °C. The specific surface area of ZrC nanoparticles synthesized using a 1.5:1 Sucrose: MOF-801 M ratio gradually decreased from 186 m 2 /g to 13 m 2 /g as the reaction temperature increased from 1500 °C to 2000 °C, revealing that the porosity of the porous ZrC particles can be controlled due to partial sintering inside the particles at different temperatures. Porous ZrC particles show promise for ultra-high temperature applications such as thermal insulation and as porous substrates.
