Abstract:The change of mechanical property and microstructure of a main steam pipe made of X20CrMoV12.1 steel for long-term elevated temperature ageing, which has been in service for more than 1.6×105 h under pressure of 13.7 MPa and temperature of 550 °C, was carefully studied so as to evaluate its structural integrity and safety reliability. The tested samples were sectioned from in service elbow. The longitudinal and circumferential mechanical properties of the pipe such as impact strength, tensile strength and hardness were measured respectively at room temperature and elevated temperature of 550 °C. And the change and degradation of the microstructure of the pipe were observed and characterized with the metallurgical method, energy dispersive spectroscope, scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope. The experimental results show that the impact property of the pipe was heavily dropped and thus displayed brittle state at normal temperature. Fractography analysis and microstructure characterization further indicate that the pipe is serious in microstructure degradation, obvious in creep damage, severe in inter-granular carbides coursing, and heavy in intralath carbides precipitation. Therefore the structural integrity of the main steam pipe in service was seriously affected, and the on-line inspection and damage class evaluation of the pipe performance should be strengthen.
