Abstract:The preparation process of a kind of superfine TiCN cermet was investigated. The prepared superfine cermet has perfect cutting performance and its average grain size is less than 0.5 μm. Its TRS is 1740 MPa and its hardness is 93 HRA.

Abstract:In this paper, a Ti(C7, N3)/TiB2/WC cermet tool material was prepared by plasma sintering. The components of the tool material and sintering process parameters were optimized through testing mechanical property. The cutting performance of the prepared tool was studied in the cutting experiment of 06Cr19Ni10 austenitic stainless steel. A comparison was made between the prepared tool and the commercial cermet tool SNMN120708. It is shown that when the volume fractions of TiB2 and WC were 20% and 15%, respectively, at the sintering temperature of 1550 °C and with the holding time of 30 min, the prepared tool would possess the flexural strength of 1096.45 Mpa, the hardness of 18.9 Gpa, the fracture toughness of 9.85 Mpa·m1/2 and the optimal cutting speed of 150 m/min. At the cutting speeds of 100 m/min and 150 m/min, the cutting distance of the developed tool was larger than that of SNMN120708. When the cutting speeds were 200 m/min and 250 m/min, the cutting distance of SNMN120708 tool was relatively large. The main wear mechanism of Ti(C7, N3)/TiB2/WC and SNMN120708 tool was adhesive wear, with no trace of abrasive wear.

Abstract:In order to improve the performances of TiCN-based cermets, researchers have paid much attention directly towards developing various new spices of cermets. The present review will try to sum up the efforts in designing and tailing in compositions and microstructures of TiCN-based cermets in recent years aiming at enhanced cermet properties. The relationship between the cermet constituents and their mechanical properties and wear resistance, as well as the advances in the synthesis of TiCN powders and preparation of TiCN-based cermets were included. Special emphasis was paid on the preparation of ultrafine/nano TiCN-based cermets possessing enhanced hardness, mechanical strength, toughness and wear resistance, which has led to a very recent surge of interest in the development of TiCN-based cermets. In particular, it has been possible to obtain dense TiCN-based cermets with ultrafine- and/or nano-structures by means of fast sintering techniques, such as spark plasma sintering, microwave vacuum sintering and so on.

Abstract:The complex thermal-mechanical coupling among Ti(C, N)-based cermet tool, workpiece and chip affects immensely the tool life, machining quality and costs during high-speed cutting, which makes the investigation on wear mechanisms of tools quite important. In this work, submicron and ultrafine Ti(C, N)-based cermet tools were prepared by vacuum sintering technology, and the cutting performance of the tools was evaluated by continuous dry cutting. The aim of this work is to unravel the wear mechanisms of submicron and ultrafine Ti(C, N)-based cermet tools based on the cutting performance and wear characteristics of both the cutting tools and chips generated during high-speed cutting. The Vickers hardness, flexural strength and tool lifespan of ultrafine Ti(C, N)-based cermets are significantly superior to those of submicron Ti(C, N)-based cermets because of grain refinement strengthening and the improved distribution of metal phases. Tool wear depends to a large extent upon the contact states and heat transfer ability at different locations of the tool edge, which are characterized by simultaneous action and mutual transition from abrasive, adhesion, surface fatigue and oxidative wear. Overall, ultrafine Ti(C, N)-based cermet tools with excellent comprehensive properties exhibit a distinctly reduced tool wear at different wear regions.

Abstract:TiB 2 /Ti(C,N) cermet was prepared by reactive spark plasma sintering from the Co-Ti-BN-C-carbide powder compact. The formation mechanism and shrinkage behavior were studied. Results showed that Ti(C,N) was produced by the diffusion of C atoms into a preformed TiN. TiN-forming reaction was exothermic, which would lead to the occurrence of deep macropores and an abnormal expansion phenomenon. With increasing temperature, the macropores became increasingly shallow. Eventually, they disappeared through the viscous flow and dissolution-reaction-precipitation mechanisms. This behavior was primarily responsible for sintering densification. Among various carbide additives, TaC displayed the optimal effect. The hardness and fracture toughness of cermet reached 1917.4 HV and 8.81 MPa.m -1/2 . The reason was the formation of a black core/gray rim structure by the diffusion of heavy elements in liquid into the Ti(C,N). Results from the present work could offer a deep understanding of reactive spark plasma sintering, and would be beneficial for the development of Ti(C,N)-based cermet.

Abstract:Coating of cobalt on surface of ultra-fine WC particle to form WC-Co composite powder was carried out by low temperature electroless plating.The WC-Co composite powder was sintered into a new type of ultra-fine WC-Co cemented carbide(NYG).The mechanical properties of the NYG were tested.The scanning electron microscopy(SEM) was used to examined the morphology and microstructure of the samples.The wear tests were performed on a pin-on-disc wear device.The results show that Co,binder phase,distributes along the grain boundary of WC and forms network structure to restrain the grain growth.The bend strength,fracture toughness and hardness of NYG are greatly improved.The plastic deformation and spalling of some WC particles are predominated in the wear process.
Research On Wear Behavior Of Atc Cermet Material

Abstract:By electroless chemical deposition process, a layer of metal cobalt film was coated on the surface of nano-ceramic powders of Al2O3 and TiC. The mixture of the two kinds of Co-coated power (about 70wt.% Al2O3-Co+30wt.%TiC-Co) was hot-pressed into ATC (Al2O3-TiC-Co8wt%) cermet samples. The wear test was carried out under dry sliding wear condition by the pin-on-disk rig. The volume-loss of the samples in three sliding pairs, ATC/Steel, ATC/SiC and ATC/artificial diamond (AD) were investigated. The wear morphologies were examined by SEM. The wear-resistance between ATC cermet and Co-cemented WC were compared. The results show that the effect of fracture toughness is better than that of hardness to the wear resistance of high hardness materials. The wear mechanisms of ATC cermet samples were found that abrasion predominated in the wear process. The wear surface of ATC cermet samples became smoother with fine asperities spalling off and the volume loss was decreased.
Preparation of Ultra-Fine ATC Ceramics and Analysis of Its Dry-Sliding Wear Behavior

Abstract:To improve the wear resistance and fracture toughness of ceramic-tools material,the ultra-fine Al_2O_3-TiC-8%Co(ATC) ceramics were prepared.Cobalt was coated on the surface of the sub-micron Al_2O_3 and TiC particles by low temperature electroless plating,and then the composite powders were sintered into the ATC samples.The wear resistance of ATC ceramics was investigated by the pin-on-disc wear device,and the worn surface morphologies were examined by scanning electron microscopy(SEM).The results show that the effect of the fracture toughness on the wear resistance of ceramic materials is very obvious and the particle spalling predominates during the dry sliding wear process.With the increasing test time,the worn surface of ATC ceramic becomes smooth and the relative wear rate decreases during the wear processes.Cobalt coated on ultra-fine Al_2O_3 and TiC can depress the grain growth during the sintering process,and consequently improve the fracture toughness and wear resistance of ATC ceramics.

Abstract:To improve the mechanical characteristics and machinability of Ti(C,N) cermet and broaden its application range, Al 2 O 3 @Ni core–shell powders with varying Ni concentrations were generated using the heterogeneous precipitation-thermal reduction method, and Al 2 O 3 @Ni core–shell powders-reinforced Ti(C,N) cermet was created using spark plasma sintering (SPS). The mechanical, microstructural, and sintering characteristics of Ti(C,N) cermet were examined using core–shell powders with varying Ni contents. Al 2 O 3 @Ni core–shell powders with appropriate Ni content may uniformly distribute Ni with magnetic solid characteristics in cermet materials, resulting in rapid and uniform discharge that increases interface bonding, improves sintering, and greatly improves overall mechanical qualities. After adding core–shell powders, the cutting force of the TA@30N cermet tool is reduced compared to the TA30N cermet tool, but the surface quality of the machined workpiece improves. The effective cutting distance of the TA@30N cermet tool on heat-treated 45# steel is 36,000 m, 33.33% greater than that of the homogeneous TA30N cermet tool.

Abstract:Ultrafine Ti(C, N)-based cermets are vacuum-sintered by refining the particle size of raw materials and tailoring the WC/TaC ratio to achieve the improvements in comprehensive mechanical properties and cutting performance. The hardness, flexural strength and tool lifespan of ultrafine Ti(C, N)-based cermets are substantially higher than those of submicron Ti(C, N)-based cermets with the same composition because of the refined grains and the improved distributions of both metal phases and residual stress. The hardness attenuation behavior and strengthening mechanism in Ti(C, N)-based cermets at different test temperatures have been proposed. At 400 degrees C, the hardness attenuation of Ti(C, N)-based cermets depends mainly upon the softening of metal phases. However, at 800 degrees C, the hardness attenuation of Ti(C, N)-based cermets is mainly related to the reduced bearing capacity of hard ceramic phases and interfacial sliding. The addition of refractory TaC is beneficial for the improvement of high-temperature mechanical properties and the tool lifespan, attributed to the strengthening of the ceramic framework by tantalum atoms.

Abstract:TiC-high Mn steel-bonded carbide with a cellular structure was designed and fabricated by powder metallurgy techniques using coarse and fine TiC particles as the hard phase. This preparation process of the alloy was designed carefully and optimized. The microstructure of the alloy was observed using a scanning electron microscope. The results show that there are two types of microstructures observed in this TiC steel-bonded carbide: the coarse-grained TiC structure and fine-grained TiC structure. The transverse rupture strength and impact toughness of the alloy reach maximum values 2231 MPa and 12.87 J/cm2, respectively, when the starting weight ratio of MP-A (containing coarse TiC particles) to MP-B (containing fine TiC particles) is 60:40. Hence, this study serves as a feasible and economical example to prepare a high-strength and high-toughness TiC-high Mn steel-bonded carbide with little production cost increase.

Abstract:Ti(C,N)-based cermets with ultrafine or submicron black core-rim grains are attracting candidates for high-quality tools and dies, due to their high hardness and strength. However, high chemical activity of ultrafine Ti(C,N) powders lead to the increased instability and difficulty to control the sintering process, since the denitrification and interface diffusion are accelerated during the solid-state reaction. Based on this, owing to the unrealized commercial ultrafine-grade powders, ultrafine Ti(C,N) powders with an average grain size around 150 nm, low oxygen content and few dislocations are fabricated via the high-energy ball milling and subsequent heat treatment of commercial micron Ti(C,N) powders. Related morphology evolution, microstructure and composition of the ultrafine Ti(C,N) powders are investigated. Dense submicron Ti(C,N)-based cermets with grain size of 0.62 μm and uniform core-rim phases are successfully prepared by using the as-fabricated ultrafine Ti(C,N) powders. Compared to cermets via the conventional high-energy milling route, submicron Ti(C,N)-based cermets exhibit higher hardness of 1750 ± 40 N/mm2, bending strength of 1960 ± 135 MPa, and satisfactory fracture toughness of 9.2 MPa m1/2, owing to smaller grain size, uniform microstructure and partial black core-rim grains.

Abstract:ZTA-TiC-FeCrNi cermets are prepared by a fast and furnace-free way called high-gravity combustion synthesis. The synthesized cermet samples show the maximum relative density of 97.6% and a hierarchical microstructure with grain sizes from submicron to >50µm. The content of TiC has a strong influence on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the cermet samples. A higher TiC content results in refined microstructure, improved hardness, and reduced coefficient of friction. With increasing TiC content, the strength and toughness of the samples first increase and then drops, and reach the maximum of 469±26MPa and 11.3±0.2MPam1/2 at 20% TiC. Compared with commercial polycrystalline Al2O3 ceramics, the ZTA-TiC-FeCrNi cermets exhibit better wear resistance, and the volume loss is lower by one magnitude than Al2O3 under the same condition.

Abstract:A TiCN-Co-Cr 3 C 2 -based cermet, with the addition of 5wt. % and 10wt. %Si 3 N 4 and a reference sample without Si 3 N 4 addition were prepared by the spark plasma sintering technique. The average hardness and fracture toughness of the 90TiCN-5Co-5Cr 3 C 2 (SN00) cermet-sintered specimens were e14.85±3.11 GPa and 6.78±0.61 MPaÖm, respectively. The cermet composition 85TiCN-5Co-5Cr 3 C 2 -5 wt. % Si 3 N 4 (SN05) enhanced the hardness and fracture toughness to 20.90±0.825 GPa and 7.23±0.45 MPaÖm, respectively. Further addition of 10 wt%Si 3 N 4 with 80TiCN-5Co-5Cr 3 C 2 (SN10) decreased the hardness value to 16.18±0.279 GPa due to a decrease in the density of defects. However, the fracture toughness steadily increased to 9.34±3.10 MPaÖm. The cermet composition 85TiCN-5Co-5Cr 3 C 2 -5Si 3 N 4 (SN05) showed an appreciable improvement in hardness and toughness values due to the formation of a core-rim structure, with the core consisting of TiCN and the rim with TiN, TiO 2 , TiSi, Co 2 C, CrN and Cr 2 Si

Preparation and Enhanced Wear Resistance of HVAF-sprayed Fe-TiB2 Cermet Coating Reinforced by Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with superior properties were introduced for the first time into Fe-TiB2 cermet coating to strengthen its wear resistance. Initially, composite feedstock in which every powder was not only highly spherical and dense but also contained uniform CNTs and TiB2 were successfully prepared. Then, Fe-based metallic and Fe-TiB2 cermet coating with or without CNTs were deposited via high velocity air fuel (HVAF) to mainly investigate the effect of CNT addition on the microstructure and wear behavior of coatings. It shows that, with incorporation of 2.5 vol% CNTs, the coating microstructure became denser and the microhardness and fracture toughness of Fe-TiB2 cermet coating obtain increases of 32% and 44% (or 61%). As a result, the improved tribological properties, the lowest porosity and fewest wear crack contribute to its best wear resistance with specific wear rate of 2.47 x 10(-6) mm(3)/N.m. Oxidative and mild abrasive wears rather than severe adhesive wear were the dominant wear mechanism of coating reinforced by CNTs.
Effect of Si3N4 Additive on Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Ti(C,N)-Based Cermet Cutting Tools

Abstract:Development of high-performance cutting tool materials is one of the critical parameters enhancing the surface finishing of high-speed machined products. Ti(C,N)-based cermets reinforced with and without different contents of silicon nitride were designed and evaluated to satisfy the requirements. In fact, the effect of silicon nitride addition to Ti(C,N)-based cermet remains unclear. The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of Si3N4 additive on microstructure, mechanical properties, and thermal stability of Ti(C,N)-based cermet cutting tools. In the present work, α-Si3N4 "grade SN-E10" was utilized with various fractions up to 6 wt.% in the designed cermets. A two-step reactive sintering process under vacuum was carried out for the green compact of Ti(C,N)-based cermet samples. The samples with 4 wt.% Si3N4 have an apparent solid density of about 6.75 g/cm3 (relative density of about 98 %); however, the cermet samples with 2 wt.% Si3N4 exhibit a superior fracture toughness of 10.82 MPa.m1/2 and a traverse rupture strength of 1425.8 MPa. With an increase in the contents of Si3N4, the Vickers hardness and fracture toughness of Ti(C,N)-based cermets have an inverse behavior trend. The influence of Si3N4 addition on thermal stability is clarified to better understand the relationship between thermal stability and mechanical properties of Ti(C,N)-based cermets.

Improvement in Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Ti(C, N) Cermet Prepared by Two-Step Spark Plasma Sintering

Abstract:A fine grained Ti(C, N) cermet tool material was prepared by two-step spark plasma sintering. Microstructure evolution and densification mechanisms of Ti(C, N) during spark plasma sintering were studied. Effect of two-step sintering process and Ni content on microstructure and mechanical properties were also investigated. The critical activated densification temperature of Ti(C, N) is about 1300 degrees C, and the rapidest densification rate takes place at 1300 degrees C similar to 1400 degrees C. Grains are in the size of 1 mu m when the Ti(C, N) cermet was prepared by two-step spark plasma sintering. The optimal flexural strength, fracture toughness and Vickers hardness are 1094 +/- 42 MPa, 7.2 +/- 0.5 MPa M-1/2 and 18.3 +/- 0.4 GPa, respectively. The Ti(C, N) cermets containing more content of Ni have higher toughness, which is due to the remarkable toughening effect of crack bridging by large grains.
Preparation, mechanical properties and enhanced wear resistance of TiC-Fe composite cermet coating

Abstract:TiC-Fe based cermet coating with high hardness and superior wear resistance together with low price and environmental friendliness was developed. Initially, the TiC-Fe composite particles were prepared by high energy ball milling, spray drying and plasma spheroidization. These cermet powders not only showed high sphericity and dense microstructure but also presented homogeneous distribution of TiC. Then, the TiC-Fe cermet coating was deposited by high velocity air fuel (HVAF). The results indicated that introducing ceramics would increase the deformation degree of the splats and eliminate the layered structure, which effectively enhanced the microhardness and wear resistance of composite coating. Compared with pure metallic coating, the microhardness of cermet coating increased to 887.5 HV0.3, while the wear rates of cermet coating reduced by 40% and 60% at 10 N and 25 N, respectively. Besides, the TiC-Fe cermet coating showed much less sensitive to the heavy load. The primary wear mechanism of single 316 L coating was a combination of adhesive wear and severe oxidation, while the TiC-Fe cermet coating showed slight abrasive wear combined with oxidation. The excellent wear resistance together with its harmless to human body make the TiC-Fe based composite coating a potential candidate when using at kitchen ware surface.

Abstract:A Ti-TiC-Fe cermet composite with a core-shell structure was fabricated by an in situ reaction at high temperature. The TiC-Fe cermet layer was formed at the interface between Ti and the gray cast iron (GCI). The XRD results indicate that the TiC-Fe cermet layer is composed mainly of alpha-Fe, Ti, and TiC. The statistical results of the electron backscattering diffraction (EBSD) indicate that the grain sizes are between 2 and 17 pm with the mean value of about 4 pm. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis results demonstrated that the TiC-Fe cermet layer enwrapped the metallic Ti wire. The size of the TiC particles in the TiC-Fe cermet layer diminished gradually, and the tridimensional morphology varied from dense block to cubes or near-spheroids with the distance from interface of Ti/cermet layer to the interface of cermet layer/GCI. Accordingly, the nano-indentation results showed that the hardness of the TiC-Fe cermet layer decreased gradually with distance from interface of Ti/cermet layer to the interface of cermet layer/GCI, and that the highest hardness value of the TiC-Fe cermet layer is nearly 28.0 GPa. The high hardness and volume fraction of TiC-Fe cermet layer will obviously enhance the wear resistance of composites.

Abstract:In this paper, the development and mechanical, physical properties on cermet cutting tool material are described. By using the cermet insert NT7 developed in recent years and WC based carbide insert YT14, the tool wear, impact and cutting force tests to high strength steel 38CrNi3MoVA (hardened and tempered, HRC36~40) are processed respectively. The results of these tests demonstrate that NT7 cutting tools have better performance on some characteristics, such as wear resistance, tool life and cutting force. And its ability of impact resistance is similar to YT14. These researches will benefit to the poplarizaion and application of cermet cutting tool.

Abstract:The (Ti,W)C/Mo/Co/Ni cermet tool material is produced using a combination of spark plasma sintering and high frequency induction heating (HFIH-SPS) mixed sintering technology. This study investigates the influence of various sintering parameters on the microstructure and mechanical properties of (Ti,W)C/Mo/Co/Ni cermet tool material. The findings indicate that the rapid sintering densification of (Ti,W)C/Mo/Co/Ni cermet tool material can be achieved by the mixed sintering technology at a lower sintering temperature. The rapid sintering process observed in this study can be mainly attributed to the plasma activation effect generated by pulse current and the Joule heat effect produced by the metal particles under high frequency induction. The optimized relative density of the (Ti,W)C/Mo/Co/Ni cermet tool material reaches 99.10%, with the hardness of 20.28 ± 0.58 GPa, the fracture toughness of 7.74 ± 0.14 MPa·m 1/2 and the flexural strength of 796.12 ± 36.55 MPa. The indentation of (Ti,W)C cermet exhibits a regular cross shape, and the indentation edge is smooth, which indicates a good fracture toughness. The high mechanical properties of (Ti,W)C/Mo/Co/Ni cermet tool material are mainly attributed to the interaction between crystal grain boundary solute strengthening and dislocation movement. The tool has shown good cutting performance during the subsequent dry cutting of 40Cr steel, with the lowest surface roughness Ra value of 1.097 μm.
