Abstract:A novel all-optical scheme for clock recovery is demonstrated by non-uniform optical time division multiplexing (OTDM) optical signal injection into model-locked optical fiber laser. In experiment, 2.5 GHz subharmonic frequency clock signal is recovered from 4×2.5 GHz OTDM signal. The technique can be used in clock recovery in high speed OTDM communication.

Abstract:Time-lens base optoelectronic oscillator was proposed. Simultaneous clock recovery and demultiplexing were demonstrated with 100-Gb/s OTDM signal. 25-GHz tributary clock with 122-fs timing jitter was obtained and error-free demultiplexing with a power penalty of 1.7 dB was achieved.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a novel scheme for clock recovery and simultaneous fourfold optical time-division demultiplexing using a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator based optoelectronic oscillator. 25-GHz prescaled optical clock with a 23% duty cycle and a 22-dB extinction ratio is successfully extracted from both 100-Gb/s on-off keying (OOK) and differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) optical time-division-multiplexing (OTDM) signal. The timing jitters (100 Hz to 10 MHz) are measured to be 195.9 fs and 125.6 fs for the optical clock extracted from the 100-Gb/s OOK and DPSK signal, respectively. Error-free optical time-division demultiplexing is also achieved simultaneously with clock recovery. By adjusting the phase shifter in the OEO loop, all four channels can be selectively demultiplexed. The power penalties at a bit error rate (BER) of 10⁻⁹ for the four demultiplexed channels are measured to be between 0.8 dB and 1.2 dB for the OOK signal and between 0.9 dB and 1.5 dB for the DPSK signal.

Abstract:All optical bit clock recovery is one of the key technologies for all optical 3R recovery. In this paper, a simple method applying the combination of Fabry–Perot (F–P) filter and semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) for clock recovery is proposed. The effect of the F–P filter finesse on the clock recovery and the reduction in the amplitude fluctuation of the clock pulse by the SOA are discussed theoretically. With this technology 10Gbit/s clock recovery with equal amplitude and wavelength transparency was realized experimentally.

Abstract:A novel clock recovery scheme using two-ring injection mode-locked fiber ring laser based on all 10 GHz bandwidth components was demonstrated. With this scheme, the clock with low timing jitter was obtained from a degraded 10 Gb/s optical data stream. Optical clock recovery was also achieved from a degraded 20 Gb/s optical data train when the clock division technique in the opto-electronic oscillator (OEO) and the rational harmonic mode-locking technique in the fiber ring laser were applied. No pattern effect was observed in the experiments.

Abstract:A novel scheme to implement clock recovery from degraded signals is proposed and demonstrated based on an optoelectronic oscillator and a dual-wavelength mode-locked fiber ring laser with distributed dispersion cavity. The scheme can obtain wavelength-tunable optical clocks at two wavelengths, which is highly desirable for composite optical logic gates, cascaded optical signal processing modules or optical signal processing modules that need synchronized pulses at multiple wavelengths. In addition, the scheme can operate in both RZ and NRZ systems. The feasibility of the method is demonstrated by an experiment, in which dual-wavelength 10-GHz optical clock with a timing jitter less than 170fs is obtained from 10-Gb/s degraded RZ and NRZ signals. The optical clocks can be tuned from 1530 to 1565nm.

Abstract:All-optical clock recovery is one of the key techniques for achieving ultra high-speed optical-time-division multiplexing (OTDM) system. Here we propose a novel all-optical scheme of using a mode-locked fiber ring to extract the same-frequency and subharmonic-frequency clock pulses from the uneven multiplexing optical signal. We have successively extracted the 10 GHz optical clock pulses from 2 x 10 Gbit/s OTDM signal. The technique can be used in high-speed OTDM communication systems.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrated 100-GHz wavelength tunable clock recovery from 100-Gb/s RZ-OOK signal utilizing a wavelength-converter based on semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA), followed by a Fabry–Perot (FP) filter and a subsequent SOA equalizer. Wavelength-tunable 100-GHz optical clock extraction has been demonstrated from 1542nm to 1565nm. Stable optical clocks with a timing jitter of ~250fs, a pulsewidth of ~3ps, and an amplitude fluctuation of less than 10% were obtained for all the wavelengths.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate all-optical clock recovery for 100 Gb/s return-to-zero on–off keying signals based on a monolithic dual-mode distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) laser, which can realize both mode spacing and wavelength tuning. By using a coherent injection locking scheme, a 100 GHz optical clock can be recovered with a timing jitter of 530 fs, which is derived by an optical sampling oscilloscope from both the phase noise and the power fluctuation. Furthermore, for degraded injection signals with an optical signal-to-noise ratio as low as 4.1 dB and a 25 km long distance transmission, good-quality optical clocks are all successfully recovered.

Abstract:ABSTRACTIn this article, 40‐Gb/s all‐optical 3R regeneration with a monolithic amplified feedback laser (AFL) as the all‐optical clock recovery and a semiconductor optical amplifier delayed interferometer (SOA‐DI) as the optical decision gate has been experimentally demonstrated. A 40‐GHz optical clock with low timing jitter and uniform amplitude was successfully recovered from the polarization mode dispersion (PMD) and noise degraded signal by the AFL. The PMD degraded signal was restored by the 3R regenerator with the Q‐factor and the amplitude uniformity improved. Abstract:We demonstrate 40 Gb/s all-optical clock recovery by using a monolithic integrated amplified-feedback laser (AFL) with coherent injection-locked method. The AFL consists of a gain-coupled DFB laser and an optical amplified feedback external cavity. With proper design and operation of AFL, the device can work at self-pulsation state that resulted from the beating between two lasing modes. The self-pulsation can be injection-locked to the optical clock embedded in input data streams. Due to different work mechanisms, there are two all-optical clock recovery operation modes: incoherent injection-locked and coherent injection-locked. It's predicted that the coherent injection method has various advantages: 1) requiring low injection power recovery, 2) independent of the bit rate and 3) introducing little timing jitter to the recovered clock. The robustness of coherent clock recovery is confirmed by our experimental results. We set up a return-to-zero (RZ) pseudorandom binary sequence (PRBS) data streams all-optical clock recovery system. This coherent injection-locked based clock recovery method is optical signal noise ratio (OSNR) and chromatic dispersion (CD) degeneration tolerant, and has low timing jitter and high sensitivity.

Abstract:This letter experimentally demonstrates all-optical clock recovery and optical 3R regeneration for a 10-Gb/s nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ) format. The 3R regenerator has achieved 10 000-hop cascadability and 1 000 000-km transmission for a pseudorandom bit sequence (PRBS) of 27-1. A semiconductor-optical-amplifier-based Mach-Zehnder interferometer (SOA-MZI) as an NRZ to pseudoreturn-to-zero converter and a Fabry-Perot filter perform the all-optical clock recovery from an NRZ signal. A pair of SOA-MZIs combined with a synchronous modulator provides the 2R regeneration and retiming functions. The cascadability of the 3R regenerator is investigated in a recirculating loop transmission experiment by eye diagram, bit-error rate, and Q-factor measurements. Transmission with the 3R regenerator shows significant performance improvement over that without 3R regeneration. A 100-hop cascadability is also demonstrated for PRBS 231-1, enabling 10 000-km error-free transmission with a low power penalty of 1.2 dB

Abstract:A scheme for high-speed clock recovery from return-to-zero (RZ) signal with microring resonators is presented. By using a silicon microring resonator (MRR) for clock extraction and a 3-order nonlinear series-coupled microring resonator (SCMR) for amplitude equalization, clock pulses with amplitude modulation less than 1 dB can be obtained. The proposed scheme is also designed and numerically studied by 3D full vectorial film mode matching method (FMM) and coupled mode theory (CMT). Abstract:We demonstrate an all-optical clock-and-data recovery technology for 10-Gb/s NRZ-DPSK signals. With a relatively simple configuration, the clock-recovery scheme achieves less than 1.5-ps RMS jitter for signals after fiber transmission. The pattern-dependence of data-recovery is within 0.5-dB at BER 10(-9).

Abstract:Opto-electronic oscillator (OEO) is a hybrid optical electrical device featured with a loop structure and high speed performance. As a kind of oscillator, the oscillation of OEO can be injection locked by an external reference frequency. We successfully extracted clock from 10 Gbit/s NRZ optical signal for the first time using the OEO. A clock signal with a timing jitter below 0.4 ps and a locking range of 800 KHz was obtained. In the experiment, we found the locking range of OEO was greatly affected by the bias voltage of modulator in the loop. Finally, we found that by carefully controlling the working condition of OEO, a data format transform from NRZ to RZ was possible. On a 160 km fiber link, the good transmission performance of the transformed RZ data showed that the OEO is a good candidate as the data format transform node at the interface of different formatted optical networks.
