Abstract:A novel all-optical scheme for clock recovery is demonstrated by non-uniform optical time division multiplexing (OTDM) optical signal injection into model-locked optical fiber laser. In experiment, 2.5 GHz subharmonic frequency clock signal is recovered from 4×2.5 GHz OTDM signal. The technique can be used in clock recovery in high speed OTDM communication.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a novel scheme for clock recovery and simultaneous fourfold optical time-division demultiplexing using a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator based optoelectronic oscillator. 25-GHz prescaled optical clock with a 23% duty cycle and a 22-dB extinction ratio is successfully extracted from both 100-Gb/s on-off keying (OOK) and differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) optical time-division-multiplexing (OTDM) signal. The timing jitters (100 Hz to 10 MHz) are measured to be 195.9 fs and 125.6 fs for the optical clock extracted from the 100-Gb/s OOK and DPSK signal, respectively. Error-free optical time-division demultiplexing is also achieved simultaneously with clock recovery. By adjusting the phase shifter in the OEO loop, all four channels can be selectively demultiplexed. The power penalties at a bit error rate (BER) of 10⁻⁹ for the four demultiplexed channels are measured to be between 0.8 dB and 1.2 dB for the OOK signal and between 0.9 dB and 1.5 dB for the DPSK signal.

Abstract:Synchronization of audio/video is one of the difficulties in digital TV system real-time decoding. The timing information in MPEG-2 transport stream and its function on synchronizing the audio and video is pointed out in this paper. Two methods to recover the system time clock are discussed in detail: a synchronization scheme by PLL and a simple non-PLL digital scheme. Using the repeat frame and skip frame manner to make it resynchronized when losing synchronization with audio and video in decoding process. The algorithm and several circuit designs here are proper for all kinds of MPEG-2 decoders.

Abstract:As an effective digital modulation scheme, OFDM is widely used in wideband digital communication systems, such as DVB-T. In this paper, an all-digitized OFDM demodulator for DVB-T is proposed. Based on the analysis of those factors that interfere with demodulation, the architecture of demodulator is presented. Then functional modules that implement digitized demodulator, such as symbol synchronization, carrier synchronization, clock synchronization, and channel compensation, are explained. At the end, the BER performance of the demodulator is given. As the result shows, the all-digitized demodulator has good performance.

Abstract:Time-lens base optoelectronic oscillator was proposed. Simultaneous clock recovery and demultiplexing were demonstrated with 100-Gb/s OTDM signal. 25-GHz tributary clock with 122-fs timing jitter was obtained and error-free demultiplexing with a power penalty of 1.7 dB was achieved.

Abstract:TDM over IP (TDMoIP) is an effective method for transparently transporting time division multiplexed (TDM) signals over IP-based networks. Clock recovery mechanism is essential for it. This paper briefly introduces the Timing requirement and principle of clock recovery, describes an improved adaptive clock recovery mechanism combined with timestamps and buffer data offset, presents the derivational process and analyzes how to deal with IP-based networks characteristics. Finally, the simulation results showed that the performance of this improved clock recovery mechanism can reach a high level and meet the requirement of the TDM service standard.

Abstract:Reconstruction of TDM service clock at the IP/TDM gateway in application of TDM-over-IP is one of the key technologies. This paper introduces the backgrounds and principle of adaptive clock recovery, presents an implementation of the adaptive clock recovery method based on packet arrival intervals, describes function module arrangement and key algorithm implementation. Finally, the experimental results are provided. The results showed that both of frequency accuracy and stability can reach a high level in the locked mode.

Abstract:All-optical clock recovery is one of the key techniques for achieving ultra high-speed optical-time-division multiplexing (OTDM) system. Here we propose a novel all-optical scheme of using a mode-locked fiber ring to extract the same-frequency and subharmonic-frequency clock pulses from the uneven multiplexing optical signal. We have successively extracted the 10 GHz optical clock pulses from 2 x 10 Gbit/s OTDM signal. The technique can be used in high-speed OTDM communication systems.

Abstract:A novel clock recovery scheme using two-ring injection mode-locked fiber ring laser based on all 10 GHz bandwidth components was demonstrated. With this scheme, the clock with low timing jitter was obtained from a degraded 10 Gb/s optical data stream. Optical clock recovery was also achieved from a degraded 20 Gb/s optical data train when the clock division technique in the opto-electronic oscillator (OEO) and the rational harmonic mode-locking technique in the fiber ring laser were applied. No pattern effect was observed in the experiments.

Abstract:Digital multiplexing is the basis of high-speed broadband digital communication networks, whose theory kernel is the processing and transmitting of clock synchronization. The transmission of clock synchronization was not understood systematically and thoroughly before, and it was limited to analyzing only the jitter of justification. This paper interprets the process of clock synchronization in a multiplexing system from quantizing and coding the information of clock synchronization (interprets justification from T/spl Delta/-/spl Sigma/M), and interprets the jitter of justification from quantization error. According to the theoretical model, decreasing the jitter caused by justification is decreasing the quantization error, because the jitter is caused by the quantization error of the information of clock synchronization.

Abstract:A novel multifunctional frequency-doubling optoelectronic oscillator (FD-OEO) mainly based on a Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) cascaded with a phase modulator (PM) and a subsequent optical bandpass filter (OBPF) is proposed. We experimentally demonstrate simultaneous operations of frequency-doubled optical clock (FD-OC) recovery, low-duty-cycle dual-wavelength prescaled OC recovery and error-free fourfold time division demultiplexing with the proposed OEO injected with a 4 × 25-Gb/s optical time-division-multiplexing (OTDM) signal. We show that the proposed FD-OEO operates well for both the differential phase shift keying (DPSK) and on-off keying (OOK) modulation formats. The extracted dual-wavelength prescaled OC is proved to be nearly transform-limited with Gaussian-like shape. Furthermore, all four 25-Gb/s tributaries can be selectively demultiplexed by adjusting the phase shifters in the OEO loop. The power penalty at a bit error rate (BER) of 10(-9) is measured to be 2.4 dB, 1.2 dB for the best channel for DPSK signal and to be 2.5 dB, 1.1 dB for the best channel for OOK signal. In addition, as an extra benefit of the OEO, low-phase-noise prescaled electrical clock (EC) is also extracted.

Multifunctional operations of nearly chirp-free frequency-doubled optical clock (FD-OC) recovery, low-duty-cycle prescaled OC recovery and error-free fourfold demultiplexing of a 100-Gb/s optical time division multiplexing (OTDM) signal are achieved simultaneously with the proposed FD-OEO composed of low-frequency devices. As an intrinsic property, prescaled electrical clock (EC) with 167.15-fs root-mean-square (RMS) timing jitter is extracted.

Abstract:We demonstrate an all-optical clock-and-data recovery technology for 10-Gb/s NRZ-DPSK signals. With a relatively simple configuration, the clock-recovery scheme achieves less than 1.5-ps RMS jitter for signals after fiber transmission. The pattern-dependence of data-recovery is within 0.5-dB at BER 10(-9).

Two important concepts, hold band and capture band, are described and the experiments show that the hold band is always broader than the capture band.
