Abstract:We experimentally demonstrated 100-GHz wavelength tunable clock recovery from 100-Gb/s RZ-OOK signal utilizing a wavelength-converter based on semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA), followed by a Fabry–Perot (FP) filter and a subsequent SOA equalizer. Wavelength-tunable 100-GHz optical clock extraction has been demonstrated from 1542nm to 1565nm. Stable optical clocks with a timing jitter of ~250fs, a pulsewidth of ~3ps, and an amplitude fluctuation of less than 10% were obtained for all the wavelengths.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate all-optical clock recovery for 100 Gb/s return-to-zero on–off keying signals based on a monolithic dual-mode distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) laser, which can realize both mode spacing and wavelength tuning. By using a coherent injection locking scheme, a 100 GHz optical clock can be recovered with a timing jitter of 530 fs, which is derived by an optical sampling oscilloscope from both the phase noise and the power fluctuation. Furthermore, for degraded injection signals with an optical signal-to-noise ratio as low as 4.1 dB and a 25 km long distance transmission, good-quality optical clocks are all successfully recovered.

Abstract:All optical bit clock recovery is one of the key technologies for all optical 3R recovery. In this paper, a simple method applying the combination of Fabry–Perot (F–P) filter and semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) for clock recovery is proposed. The effect of the F–P filter finesse on the clock recovery and the reduction in the amplitude fluctuation of the clock pulse by the SOA are discussed theoretically. With this technology 10Gbit/s clock recovery with equal amplitude and wavelength transparency was realized experimentally.

Abstract:A novel scheme to implement clock recovery from degraded signals is proposed and demonstrated based on an optoelectronic oscillator and a dual-wavelength mode-locked fiber ring laser with distributed dispersion cavity. The scheme can obtain wavelength-tunable optical clocks at two wavelengths, which is highly desirable for composite optical logic gates, cascaded optical signal processing modules or optical signal processing modules that need synchronized pulses at multiple wavelengths. In addition, the scheme can operate in both RZ and NRZ systems. The feasibility of the method is demonstrated by an experiment, in which dual-wavelength 10-GHz optical clock with a timing jitter less than 170fs is obtained from 10-Gb/s degraded RZ and NRZ signals. The optical clocks can be tuned from 1530 to 1565nm.

Abstract:We demonstrate 40 Gb/s all-optical clock recovery by using a monolithic integrated amplified-feedback laser (AFL) with coherent injection-locked method. The AFL consists of a gain-coupled DFB laser and an optical amplified feedback external cavity. With proper design and operation of AFL, the device can work at self-pulsation state that resulted from the beating between two lasing modes. The self-pulsation can be injection-locked to the optical clock embedded in input data streams. Due to different work mechanisms, there are two all-optical clock recovery operation modes: incoherent injection-locked and coherent injection-locked. It's predicted that the coherent injection method has various advantages: 1) requiring low injection power recovery, 2) independent of the bit rate and 3) introducing little timing jitter to the recovered clock. The robustness of coherent clock recovery is confirmed by our experimental results. We set up a return-to-zero (RZ) pseudorandom binary sequence (PRBS) data streams all-optical clock recovery system. This coherent injection-locked based clock recovery method is optical signal noise ratio (OSNR) and chromatic dispersion (CD) degeneration tolerant, and has low timing jitter and high sensitivity.

Abstract:All-optical clock recovery for the return-to-zero modulation format is demonstrated experimentally at 40 Gbits/s by using an amplified feedback laser. A 40 GHz optical clock with a root-mean-square (rms) timing jitter of 130 fs and a carrier-to-noise ratio of 42 dB is obtained. Also, a 40 GHz optical clock with timing jitter of 137 fs is directly recovered from pseudo-non-return-to-zero signals degraded by polarization-mode dispersion (PMD). No preprocessing stage to enhance the clock tone is used. The rms timing jitter of the recovered clock is investigated for different values of input power and for varying amounts of waveform distortion due to PMD.

Abstract:A 1.55μm InGaAsP-InP partly gain-coupled two-section DFB self-pulsation laser (SPL) with a varied ridge width has been fabricated. The laser produces self-pulsations with a frequency tuning range of more than 135GHz. All-optical clock recovery from 40Gb/s degraded data streams has been demonstrated. Successful lockings of the device at frequencies of 30GHz, 40GHz, 50GHz, and 60GHz to a 10GHz sidemode injection are also conducted, which demonstrates the capability of the device for all-optical clock recovery at different frequencies. This flexibility of the device is highly desired for practical uses.

Abstract:All-optical clock recovery is one of the key techniques for achieving ultra high-speed optical-time-division multiplexing (OTDM) system. Here we propose a novel all-optical scheme of using a mode-locked fiber ring to extract the same-frequency and subharmonic-frequency clock pulses from the uneven multiplexing optical signal. We have successively extracted the 10 GHz optical clock pulses from 2 x 10 Gbit/s OTDM signal. The technique can be used in high-speed OTDM communication systems.

Abstract:A scheme for high-speed clock recovery from return-to-zero (RZ) signal with microring resonators is presented. By using a silicon microring resonator (MRR) for clock extraction and a 3-order nonlinear series-coupled microring resonator (SCMR) for amplitude equalization, clock pulses with amplitude modulation less than 1 dB can be obtained. The proposed scheme is also designed and numerically studied by 3D full vectorial film mode matching method (FMM) and coupled mode theory (CMT). Abstract:We propose and demonstrate an improved optoelectronic oscillator based on a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator for simultaneous low-duty-cycle and low-phase-noise clock recovery from NRZ signal and wavelength-preserved NRZ-to-RZ format conversion. A 25-GHz optical clock with a 25% duty cycle and a 22.5-dB extinction ratio is successfully extracted from the incident 25-Gb/s NRZ signal. Benefiting from the intrinsic property of the optoelectronic oscillator, an electrical clock with a 174-fs root-mean-square timing jitter (100 Hz-10 MHz) is also achieved. Simultaneously, error-free wavelength-preserved NRZ-to-RZ format conversion with a -2-dB power penalty at a bit error rate of 10(-9) is demonstrated.

Abstract:A novel optical phase-locked loop (OPLL) based on four-wave-mixing in optical fibers and optical voltage-controlled oscillator (OVCO) is proposed and built to perform clock recovery in optical time-division multiplexed systems. The operation principle of the optical phase-locked loop and the configurations and functions of modules in optical phase-locked loop are analyzed theoretically. With the use of highly-nonlinear fibers in all-optical phase detector, the fiber length is shortened sufficiently, which reduces the walk-off between two pulse trains induced by dispersion. The phase detector has an extinction ratio beyond 30 dB. The optical voltage-controlled oscillator based on regenerative mode-locked fiber laser provides high-quality pulses over a repetition frequency range of 380 kHz. In the clock recovery experiment, a transform-limited pulse train is recovered from a 40 Gb/s signal, with pulse width of 7.2 ps, timing jitter (root-mean-square) of 152 fs, and super-mode suppression ratio over 60 dB. The loop is robust against pattern effect and amplitude fluctuation of input signal.

Abstract:We investigate a clock enhancement technique with signal pre-distortion using a semiconductor optical amplifier based Mach-Zehnder interferometer (SOA-MZI). Working together with a Fabry-Perot filter (FPF) based all-optical clock recovery module, this technique achieved modulation-format-independent all-optical clock recovery with a simple and straight-forward configuration. We then analyze the clock enhancement technique with numerical simulations. The simulations determine the optimal operation points of the SOA-MZI for RZ and NRZ inputs and demonstrate effective clock amplitude improvement and clock amplitude fluctuation reduction.

Abstract:A Fabry-Perot (F-P) etalon and a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) were combined to preprocess the data signals before clock recovery. With this technology in the 10-Gb/s clock recovery utilizing injection mode-locked laser (IMLL) based on SOA, the amplitude fluctuation and timing jitters caused by the pattern effect in recovered clock pulses were greatly reduced, experimentally. It also demonstrated that clock could be recovered from the very degraded signals.

Abstract:We investigate experimentally all-optical clock recovery for return-to-zero (RZ) and nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ) differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) signals at 40 Gbits/s using a passively mode-locked quantum-dot Fabry-Perot (QD-FP) semiconductor laser. The QD-FP laser exhibits a beat spectrum linewidth of 80 kHz, which enables a recovered clock signal with a root-mean-square timing jitter of 160 fs for the RZ-DPSK signal and 240 fs for the NRZ-DPSK signal. The timing jitter of the recovered clock signal is characterized for different values of the input signal power and the input signal optical signal-to-noise ratio.

With a relatively simple configuration, the clock-recovery scheme achieves less than 1.5-ps RMS jitter for signals after fiber transmission.
