Abstract:Different reaction technology determines different catalytic materials and solid density affects the hydrodynamics behavior in a fluidized bed. An efficient hydrodynamics study is, therefore, highly desirable, even for evaluating the assumptions through pilot-scale investigation. To develop new fluidized bed technology that requires low-density particles (e.g., the vapor-phase Beckman rearrangement to produce ε-caprolactam), the authors thoroughly studied the hydrodynamics of low-density particles (true density 750 kg/m3, packing density 450 kg/m3) in a turbulent fluidized bed. Pilot-scale cold experiments were conducted in an ∅800 mm column with optical fiber probes. The TFM was adopted, where the Wen&Yu model, EMMS model, and six filtered models were coupled, respectively. The solution of the EMMS model is often challenging because of the iterative solution of nonlinear equations. In this work, the calculation process of the EMMS model was optimized, saving one global search for every possible state solution, and a set of nonlinear equations can be linearized. Comparisons between experiment and simulation results revealed that the EMMS models gave the best prediction. This work can provide a research model and guidance for the design of industrial fluidized bed reactors using low-density particles.
Direct synthesis of dimethyl ether from syngas containing N2 in a slurry reactor in tandem with a fixed-bed reactor

Abstract:The slurry reactor with inert liquid can transfer heat in time and avoid the catalysts sintering, CO rich synthesis gas can be used in this reactor. In order to maintain both effective heat transfer and higher CO conversion, a slurry reactor in tandem with a fixed-bed reactor was used for DME synthesis. The synthesis gas was pre-mixed in a pressurized gas cylinder. The high pressure syngas was regulated and its flow rate was controlled by a mass flowmeter and fed to the reactor. The reaction pressure was kept by a back pressure regulator. The reactor effluent was analyzed on-line by two gas chromatographs. The experiments were carried out in the range of 220 ℃～260 ℃, 3.0 MPa～7.0 MPa and 500 mL·g -1·h -1～2 000 mL·g -1·h -1. The catalyst was a physical mixture of commercial methanol synthesis catalyst and methanol dehydration catalyst, the granularity was 0.15 mm～0.18 mm. The experimental results showed that the conversion of CO increased with increasing reaction temperature and pressure, the selectivity of DME was insensitive to temperature and pressure. 7.0 MPa and 260 ℃ were the optimal reaction conditions, at which 84.5% of CO conversion and 78.7% of DME selectivity were obtained while the the weight ratio of the catalysts loaded in the two reactors was 1∶1. Then DME synthesis reactions carried out in a fixed-bed reactor, a slurry reactor and the slurry-fixed-bed equipment respectively were compared and the adiabatic temperature rise of syngas was calculated. The results demonstrated that higher CO conversion was obtained in the slurry-fixed-bed equipment and the high temperature of hotspot was avoided simultaneously. Moreover, the catalyst was stable in the reactor during the 370 h reaction.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the reaction technique of converting methyltrichlorosilane, the main by-product in the direct synthesis of dimethyldichlorosilane, to more valuable methylchlorosilanes.The conversion reaction of methyltrichlorosilane in a stirred bed reactor by the methylaluminumchloride method with aluminum powder and methylchloride as raw materials was systematically investigated.It was found that after an introduction period of about 100 min, the reaction reached a steady state with good activity in the absence of catalysts by the aid of mechanical stirring in the reactor which promoted the elimination of oxidized layer on the surface of the aluminum powder and speeded up the surface renewal process.Increasing the stirring speed and raising the reaction temperature to the optimum levels were favorable to the conversion reaction.The molar proportion of methyl chloride to methyltricholrosilane (m) in the feed had great effect on the reaction conversion and product composition.The concentrations of dimethyldichlorosilane and trimethylchlorosilane in the product were relatively higher while the reaction conversion of methyltrichlorosilane was lower when m2.0,the trimethylchlorosilane was the main conversion product when m=2.0, and tetramethylsilane became the main product at a higher reaction conversion of methyltrichlorosilane when m2.0.The reaction mechanism was discussed by analysing the SEM surface morphology of the aluminum powder before and after reaction.

Abstract:Dimethyl ether (DME) is regarded as an environmentally benign fuel for vehicles. Two kinds of reactor technologies for DME synthesis have been proposed by previous researchers: the fixed-bed and the slurry reactor. As the reactions are highly exothermic and the temperature window of the catalyst is very narrow, the fixed-bed reactor provides a limited heat removal capability and a low conversion of the syngas. The slurry reactor can provide an effective temperature control but a very high inter-phase mass transfer resistance is added by the liquid medium. The Fluidized bed reactor can be an ideal reactor for DME synthesis as it possesses both high heat and mass transfer efficiencies. In this paper, a two-phase model is used to theoretically analyze the DME synthesis in a fluidized bed reactor, with both phases assumed to be in plug flow and taking into account the changes in bubble diameter resulting from the reaction. Three reactions take place simultaneously when DME is manufactured from the syngas (H2 + CO): a) CO+2H2 = CH3OH; b) 2CH3OH = DME+H2O; and c) CO+H2O = CO2+H2. The simulation shows that, at the reactor outlet, the equilibrium approaches of the three reactions are 0.32, 0.1, and 0.61, respectively. When H2/CO=1.0, the CO conversion and DME selectivity in a fluidized bed reactor are 62% and 95%, while those in a fixed-bed reactor are 9% and 86%. In a slurry reactor, the CO conversion and DME selectivity are 17% and 70%, respectively. Therefore, the fluidized-bed is the most promising candidate reactor for conducting the DME synthesis from syngas. Effects of the operating conditions on the performance of DME synthesis in the fluidized-bed reactor are discussed in details. The optimal H2/CO ratio is between 1.0-1.5, and increasing the pressure is shown to improve the reactor performance.

Abstract:The progress in developing one-step technology for dimethyl ether (DME) mass production by Tsinghua Univer-sity and Chongqing Yingli Fuels Chemicals Co. Ltd. has been introduced. The new process, using a circulating slurry reactor,acquired a substantial breakthrough in the industrialization of the one-step DME technology and obtained approving results inthe pilot plant: the once-through CO conversion reached to over 60% and the selectivity of DME over 94%.

Abstract:The industrial trial production of dimethyl ether synthesized from semi-water gas was introduced. The process technique and equipment consist of fine desulfurization of semi-water gas, synthesis of dimethyl ether and purification by rectification. Single conversion of CO and total selectivity of dimethyl ether reached 76% and 70%, respectively. After rectification, the purity of dimethyl ether was above 99%.

Abstract:The recent studies of direct alcohol/ether synthesis process in slurry reactors were reviewed, and the research work in our laboratory was carried out in this paper. a global kinetics model for direct dimethyl ether (DME) synthesis from syngas over a novel Cu-Zn-Al-Zr slurry catalyst was established according to the total of 25 experimental data, and a steady-state one-dimensional mathematical model was further developed in bubble column slurry reactor (BCSR), which was assumed that the bubble phase was plug flow, and the liquid phase was fully mixed flow. The numerical simulations of reactor design of 100000 t/a dimethyl ether pilot plant indicate that higher pressure and lower temperature were favorable to the increase of CO conversion, selectivity of dimethyl ether, product yield and height of slurry bed. The optimal operating conditions for DME synthesis process were obtained: reaction temperature at 240°C, reactor pressure at 5 MPa and reactor diameter of 2.5 m.

Abstract:Effects of process conditions on direct synthesis of dimethyl ether from synthesis gas (syngas) containing N2 were studied. The process was carried out on a mixed bifunctional catalyst in a mechanically agitated autoclave with inert liquid in it. The catalyst sizes were 0.15-0.18 mm. The optimum conditions were: 240°-260°C, 7 MPa, and WHSV 1-1.5 L/(g-hr). After calculating experimental data, the influence of N2 concentration on reaction rate constants was inspected. The results showed that regressed kinetic equations were applicable when syngas containing N2 was used.

Abstract:The global kinetics of the slurry synthesis of dimethyl ether from syngas in a stirred autoclave over Cu-Zn-Al-Zr catalyst was studied at pressure of 3-7MPa,temperature of 220-260℃,WHSV of 0.4-1.2 L·g-1·h-1 and mole fractions of H2,CO and CO2 in feed gas of 0.75-0.65,0.14-0.20 and 0.04-0.08,respectively.Three reactions,CO hydrogenation to methanol,CO2 hydrogenation to methanol and methanol dehydration to dimethyl ether,were chosen as the independent reactions and based on that a Langmuir-Hinshelwood type global kinetic model was built.The model parameters were estimated by fitting experimental data and parameter optimization based on general Genetic Algorithm and Levenberg-Marquardt methods,and the reliability of model was verified by statistical test and residual error analysis.

Abstract:As syngas to dimethyl ether (DME) reaction is highly exothermic and the catalyst temperature window is very narrow, fluidized-bed reactor is an ideal candidate as it is highly effective both in heat and mass transfer. In this paper, a new mechanism and kinetics model for DME synthesis are established and a laboratory fluidized-bed reactor is set up. Experiments are carried out to assess the performance of DME synthesis in this reactor. The experimental results show that CO conversion and DME productivity are higher than those of fixed bed or slurry reactor. Two two-phase models are used to simulate DME synthesis in the lab fluidized-bed reactor with the bubble phase assumed to be in plug flow, and the dense phase in plug flow (P–P model) and in fully back-mixed flow (P–M model). Comparison between calculated and experimental results shows P–M is more valid than P–P model, and then influences of different parameters on reactor performance are investigated based on P–M model.

The progresses in the research for the catalysts, the reaction kinetics, the bubble characteristics, the gas-liquid mass transfer coefficient and the mathematical reactor model for the bubble column slurry reactor were reviewed. In research and development situation at present, direct synthesis process for the alcohol/ether fuel in the bubble column slurry reactor is the future development orientation for dimethyl ether production technologies. The present urgent problems to be solved mainly focused on the development of the distinctive commercial catalysts matching with the liquid, the separation of solid and liquid and the catalyst regeneration.

Abstract:The production processes included catalytic dehydration of methanol in an adiabatic fixed-bed reactor and two columns product separations. In this study, the technological process for dimethyl ether (DME) synthesis is built on PRO/II platform based on the combined parameters of the reaction dynamic model for methanol dehydration reaction, the improved NRTL model of the liquid phase, the PR model of vapor phase. In order to validate the proposed model, the simulation results have been compared with the available data from a set of industrial production equipment with a production capacity of 200 000 tonnes per annum. A comparison between the calculated and measured results has proved that these results are satisfactory. The bed height and the volume of the catalytic bed are calculated aim at one million t/a DME yields and while taking account of high-purity DME production. After discussing the influence of feed stage location and reflux ratio for DME product purity, the suitable unit operation conditions are chosen. Accordingly, accurate process simulation results provide the basis and guidance for an improvement and development of the similar industrial device.

Abstract:One-step synthesis of DME (dimethyl ether) from syngas on hybrid catalyst is studied.In the experiment,the effects of variables including composition of feed gas,temperature and pressure are studied under the condition as follows:the catalyst was composed of C302 methanol synthesis catalyst and CM-3-1 methanol dehydration catalyst (mixing ratio 1∶1).Liquid paraffin is used as inert solvent.The reaction temperature is in the range of 230-270?℃ and the pressure is in the range of 3.0-5.0?MPa.It turns out that with the temperature and pressure increasing the conversion of carbon,the selectivity and production rate of dimethyl ether increase,while the selectivity and production rate of methanol decrease.Furthermore,both the conversion of carbon and the selectivity of dimethyl ether are high for the syngas of appropriate CO 2.

Abstract:A mathematical model for a bubble column slurry reactor is presented for dimethyl ether synthesis from syngas. Methanol synthesis from carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide by hydrogenation and the methanol dehydration are considered as independent reactions, in which methanol, dimethyl ether and carbon dioxide are the key components. In this model, the gas phase is considered to be in plug flow and the liquid phase to be in partly back mixing with axial distribution of solid catalyst. The simulation results show that the axial dispersion of solid catalysts, the operational height of the slurry phase in the bubble column slurry reactor, and the reaction results are influenced by the reaction temperature and pressure, which are the basic data for the scale-up of reactor.

Abstract:This study investigates an innovative method to produce dimethyl ether (DME) by direct synthesis from syngas derived from biogas. The proposed process was rigorously simulated in Aspen Plus, highlighting the main sections: (i) biogas tri-reforming, (ii) dimethyl-ether synthesis, and (iii) DME purification. The tri-reforming section has a CO 2 and CH 4 conversion of 27.3% and 96.2%, respectively A novel catalyst suitable for CO 2 -rich feed was chosen for the DME production to allow 60% conversion of CO 2 . Product separation is achieved via several absorption and distillation columns, ensuring that the operating conditions are kept mild to avoid expensive refrigeration. An optimization analysis was performed to identify the most suitable layout of the downstream process. This was identified through the evaluation of performance indicators such as utility usage and operating expenses. A wide range of purification strategies have been evaluated, and two scenarios are proposed based on the results. Configuration A produces 5.34 ktpy DME and 1.26 ktpy methanol, while Configuration B produces exclusively 6.21 ktpy DME. The process configurations were analysed by means of key techno-economic indicators and sustainability metrics. Both processes have an energy intensity of 14.5 kWh/kg. The reforming unit has a negligible footprint as it is thermally sustained from biogas combustion, but the reboilers are the main contributors for plant CO 2 emissions. Configuration B has the best economic value with 11,634 k€ of NPV after 25 years and a payback time of 4 years.

Abstract:We investigated the synthesis of dimethyl ether (DME) from biomass synthesis gas using a kind of hybrid catalyst consisting of methanol and HZSM-5 zeolite in a fixed-bed reactor in a 100 ton/year pilot plant. The biomass synthesis gas was produced by oxygen-rich gasification of corn core in a two-stage fixed bed. The results showed that CO conversions reached 82.00% and 73.55%, the selectivities for DME were 73.95% and 69.73%, and the space–time yields were 124.28 kg m−3 h−1 and 203.80 kg m−3 h−1 when gas hourly space velocities were 650 h−1 and 1200 h−1, respectively. Deoxidation and tar removal from biomass synthesis gas was critical to the stable operation of the DME synthesis system. Using single-pass synthesis, the H2/CO ratio improved from 0.98–1.17 to 2.12–2.22. The yield of DME would be increased greatly if the exhaust was reused after removal of the CO2.

Abstract:With the dramatic increase in the international oil price, gas-to-liquid processes of Fischer-Tropsch (FT) synthesis, methanol synthesis, and dimethyl ether (DME) synthesis have become increasingly important and received much attention from both academic and industrial interests. The slurry reactor has the advantages of simple construction, excellent heat transfer performance, online catalyst addition and withdrawal, and a reasonable interphase mass transfer rate with low energy input, which make it very suitable for gas-to-liquid processes. However, its multiphase flow behaviors are very complex and the multiphase reactor has some remarkable scale-up effects; therefore, extensive studies are still needed for the development and design of a high-performance slurry reactor. This article gives a state-of-the-art review of the recent studies on the slurry reactor for gas-to-liquid processes. The influences of the superficial gas velocity, operating pressure and temperature, solid concentration, column dimensions, and gas distributor are discussed. Some recent developments in the liquid-solid separation in a slurry reactor are also summarized. The concept of using internals to intensify the mass transfer and improve the hydrodynamics is discussed based on both experimental results and theoretical analysis. Modeling and simulations of the gas-liquid and gas-liquid-solid flows are briefly reviewed, with focus on the new trend of coupling the population balance model (PBM) into the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) framework to describe the complex bubble behaviors and gas-liquid interphase interactions. The results of a 3000 ton/year pilot plant for DME synthesis are given, showing that the slurry reactor has promising applications in gas-to-liquid processes.

Abstract:Thermodynamic analysis of single-step synthesis of dimethyl ether (DME) from syngas over a bi-functional catalyst (BFC) in a slurry bed reactor has been investigated as a function of temperature (200-240 degrees C), pressure (20-50 bar), and composition feed ratio (H-2/CO: 1-2). The BFC was prepared by physical mixing of CuO/ZnO/Al2O3 as a methanol synthesis catalyst and H-ZSM-5 as a methanol dehydration catalyst. The three reactions including methanol synthesis from CO and H-2, methanol dehydration to DME and water-gas shift reaction were chosen as the independent reactions. The equilibrium thermodynamic analysis includes a theoretical model predicting the behaviour and a comparison to experimental results. Theoretical model calculations of thermodynamic equilibrium constants of the reactions and equilibrium composition of all components at different reaction temperature, pressure, and H-2/CO ratio in feed are in good accordance with experimental values.

Abstract:The carbonylation of bio-based dimethyl ether (DME) using ferrierite offers a renewable approach to methyl acetate (MA) production with a potential reduction in carbon emissions. This work showcases the feasibility of employing fluidized-bed reactors in this process, leveraging benefits such as effective solid mixing, uniform temperature distribution, and facile catalyst purge and makeup. Through parametric studies, the impact of operating conditions on the reaction kinetics and reactor hydrodynamics was elucidated. Both physical and chemical catalyst deactivation were found to be dependent on the fluidization regime. Numerical models based on experimental results enabled the prediction of reaction yield and selectivity in the process simulation and optimization. Preliminary techno-economic analysis (TEA) and life cycle assessment (LCA) showed the potential for a 40% reduction in production costs and an 8% reduction in the global warming potential compared to the fossil-based benchmark. Overall, this study highlights the operation simplicity, cost competitiveness, and environmental benefit of MA production from DME carbonylation in a fluidized-bed reactor, providing insights for process scale-up and feedstock sourcing.

Abstract:One step synthesis of dimethyl ether from carbon dioxide and hydrogen over hybrid catalyst composed of C302 catalyst for methanol synthesis and CM-3-1 catalyst for methanol dehydration in a mechanical agitated autoclave has been studied. Effect of reaction conditions including temperature and pressure on the conversion rate and product selectivity was observed. Because of the presence of the inert liquid phase in this process, syngas conversion can be significantly improved by co-product of DME along with methanol. The coproduct strategy improves the thermodynamics and kinetic environment of the reaction system.
