Abstract:This paper reviews recent investigation achievements on the direct dimethyl ether fuel cell(DDFC) with great business prospects.This review mainly discusses the development of new anode catalysts for dimethyl ether(DME) electrooxidation,the performance optimization of different membrane electrode assemblies(MEAs) structure and the effects of different operation conditions.Besides in-depth on the present research,it is proposed that using the alkaline anolyte saturated DME as fuel and making peroxide hydrogen as alternative oxidant will further improve fuel cell performance.
Life cycle water footprint and carbon footprint analysis of coal gasification to clean fuel dimethyl ether

Abstract:Dimethyl ether is an ideal clean fuel that can replace diesel and liquefied petroleum gas, and has broad application prospects. The work analyzed the life cycle water footprint and carbon footprint of dimethyl ether production from coal gasification. The research results reveal that the water footprint of coal-to-dimethyl ether under the basic scenario is 11.2667 L H 2 O/MJ, and the carbon footprint is 0.2716 kgCO 2 -eq/MJ. In the whole production process, the synthesis of dimethyl ether is the main water consumption unit, occupying 99.70% of the whole water footprint. At the same time, this unit is also the major carbon emission unit, occupying 95.26% of the total carbon footprint. By studying and analyzing the distribution of water consumption and carbon emissions in the production process of dimethyl ether, it is found that power utilization is the major contributor to water footprint, accounting for 68.44% of the total water footprint. Although direct carbon emissions are the main impact on the carbon footprint, with electricity usage accounting for 6.33% of the total carbon footprint, they cannot be ignored. Based on this, the water footprint and carbon footprint of 31 provinces under the influence of power structures are studied. In addition, sensitivity analysis was conducted to study water consumption and carbon emissions under 24 different scenarios. This study introduced the relevant water consumption and carbon emissions in the process of producing dimethyl ether from coal gasification within a certain range, and emphasized the impact of regional differences in power structure on the results. The research results provide important references for reducing resource consumption in the production process of dimethyl ether and formulating environmental investment plans.

Fuel Synthesis with Co2 Captured from Atmosphere: Thermodynamic Analysis

Abstract:Synthetic hydrocarbon fuel, derived from renewable energy and captured carbon dioxide from flue gas and/or ambient air, can close its carbon cycle and is an important approach to sustainable energy. In this study, the thermodynamic performance of a co-electrolysis process for producing hydrogen and carbon monoxide from water and captured CO2 is investigated, based on current carbon capture and high-temperature electrolysis technologies. The exergy analysis is useful because it can reveal the energy losses due to irreversibilities and indicate possibilities for improvement of a process. Fuel synthesis systems integrated with or separated from different carbon capture technologies were evaluated and the analysis results have indicated that compared to the energy/exergy consumed by electrolysis, the energy/exergy penalty from CO2 capture is insignificant. The thermodynamic efficiency of fuel synthesis could be increased by developing fuel generation technologies with lower electricity requirements, especially when using solar and nuclear energy.

Abstract:With the dwindling availability of fossil fuel resources and the dramatic increase in demand, 5-methoxymethylfurfural (MMF) obtained from renewable biomass resources has great potential as a fossil fuel alternative. In this work, a high yield (80.5%) of MMF was obtained from fructose catalyzed by Amberlyst-15 with the assistance of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) in methanol at 100 degrees C for 10 h. Based on a detailed investigation of the reaction mechanism through the effects of DMSO, Amberlyst-15, reaction time, and reaction temperature on MMF yield and the existence of intermediates proved by FTIR, a two-step pathway was proposed: (1) DMSO and H ion on Amberlyst-15 act as a joint-catalyst [DMSOH](+), facilitating the dehydration of fructose into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), and (2) [DMSOH](+) assists the etherification of HMF with methanol into MMF, which is the rate-determining step. This finding expands the concept of biomass conversion into biomass fuels and plays a vital role in catalyst screen and design, reaction medium selection, and industrial applications.

Abstract:Dimethyl ether (DME) is a synthetically produced alternative fuel to diesel-based fuel and could be used in ignition diesel engines due to increasing energy demand. DME is considered extremely clean transportation and green fuel because it has a high cetane number (around 60), low boiling point (−25 °C), and high oxygen amount (35 wt%) which allow fast evaporation and higher combustion quality (smoke-free operation and 90% fewer NOx emissions) than other alternative CO2-based fuels. DME can be synthesized from various routes such as coal, petroleum, and bio-based material (i.e., biomass and bio-oil). Dimethyl ether can be produced from CO2 to prevent greenhouse gas emissions. This review aims to summarize recent progress in the field of innovative catalysts for the direct synthesis of dimethyl ether from syngas (CO+H2) and operating conditions. The problems of this process have been raised based on the yield and selectivity of dimethyl ether. However, regardless of how syngas is produced, the estimated total capital and operating costs in the industrial process depend on the type of reactor and the separation method.
One-step Synthesis of Dimethyl Ether from Semi-water Gas for Industrial Trial Production

Abstract:The industrial trial production of dimethyl ether synthesized from semi-water gas was introduced. The process technique and equipment consist of fine desulfurization of semi-water gas, synthesis of dimethyl ether and purification by rectification. Single conversion of CO and total selectivity of dimethyl ether reached 76% and 70%, respectively. After rectification, the purity of dimethyl ether was above 99%.

Abstract:Dimethyl ether (DME) shows great potential as an e‐fuel and platform chemical. This review investigates the innovative direct synthesis of DME from CO2 and hydrogen using bifunctional catalysts, highlighting advancements in different catalyst and comparing the direct DME synthesis, to the sole MeOH synthesis under different reaction conditions. Dimethyl ether (DME) has promising properties as e‐fuel and platform chemical. Its direct synthesis from CO2 and hydrogen, which is thermodynamically more favorable than the indirect route over methanol, is reviewed. Systematic thermodynamic equilibrium calculations are evaluated and compared to bifunctional catalysis experiments performed with Cu/ZnO/ZrO2 methanol catalyst and ferrierite or heteropolyacid‐coated dehydration catalysts under thermodynamic and kinetic conditions. In the thermodynamic region, the methyl yield of direct DME synthesis is superior over sole methanol synthesis. Significant differences among the solid acids used are absent. However, under kinetic conditions, the heteropolyacid‐coated catalysts show superior performance for dehydration over zeolites.

Abstract:Because transportation of natural gas from remote regions is rather expensive,one noteworthy way of utilizing natural gas resources in the West is to convert them into facilely transportable chemical products with high added value,such as dimethyl,methanol etc.A comparison between the technology of singular production of dimethyl ether against one combined with power generation is being presented.With the latter one 8.94% relative energy saving may be attained.The influence of hydrogen to carbon ratio of the syngas on the co-production system's performance is also being discussed.Figs 8,table 1 and refs 13.

Abstract:For the purpose of comparing the technical and economic performances of new types of production systems,singularly producing dimethyl ether,with those coupled with Co-production,a one-step dimethyl ether synthesis system,based on LPDME pulp bed,has been designed and modeled.An economic analysis of three types of dimethyl ether synthesis has been conducted,which shows that the relative energy saving rate of the new type DME/power co-production amounts to(0.34%) as compared to the LPDME system.Assuming the current price of natural gas to be (0.66) Yuan/Nm~3 and that of electric power(0.25) Yuan/kWh,production cost of the dimethyl ether/power co-production system would be lowest for a presupposed production scale of(200,000) tons of dimethyl ether per year.Analysis results indicate that in districts,where there is plenty of cheap natural gas, the new type of dimethyl ether production system has certain economic advantages.Figs6,tables 3 and refs 15.

Abstract:Abstract The present review focuses on a comparison and assessment of zeolite catalyst performance of dimethyl ether and light olefin production through methanol. Dimethyl ether is a clean fuel which needs diverse processes to be produced. Methanol to dimethyl ether is a very novel process which offers considerable advantages versus additional processes for the production of dimethyl ether. The corresponding fixed-bed reactors compose the most important section of such a process. Production of dimethyl ether by the mentioned process is of high importance since it can be catalytically transferred to a substance with the value of propylene. Furthermore, in case of capability to transfer low-purity methanol into dimethyl ether, less expensive methanol can be consequently achieved with higher value added. In the petrochemical industry, light olefins, for example, ethylene and propylene, can be used as raw materials for the production of polyolefin. The present review aims to produce dimethyl ether in order to reach olefin substances, initially conducting a compressive assessment on production methods of olefin substances.

Abstract:This study investigates an innovative method to produce dimethyl ether (DME) by direct synthesis from syngas derived from biogas. The proposed process was rigorously simulated in Aspen Plus, highlighting the main sections: (i) biogas tri-reforming, (ii) dimethyl-ether synthesis, and (iii) DME purification. The tri-reforming section has a CO 2 and CH 4 conversion of 27.3% and 96.2%, respectively A novel catalyst suitable for CO 2 -rich feed was chosen for the DME production to allow 60% conversion of CO 2 . Product separation is achieved via several absorption and distillation columns, ensuring that the operating conditions are kept mild to avoid expensive refrigeration. An optimization analysis was performed to identify the most suitable layout of the downstream process. This was identified through the evaluation of performance indicators such as utility usage and operating expenses. A wide range of purification strategies have been evaluated, and two scenarios are proposed based on the results. Configuration A produces 5.34 ktpy DME and 1.26 ktpy methanol, while Configuration B produces exclusively 6.21 ktpy DME. The process configurations were analysed by means of key techno-economic indicators and sustainability metrics. Both processes have an energy intensity of 14.5 kWh/kg. The reforming unit has a negligible footprint as it is thermally sustained from biogas combustion, but the reboilers are the main contributors for plant CO 2 emissions. Configuration B has the best economic value with 11,634 k€ of NPV after 25 years and a payback time of 4 years.

Abstract:The research and development situation of fuel cell electric vehicles are reviewed in brief. The practical significance of hydrogen production by dimethyl ether reforming for fuel cell is reviewed. Two existing methods for hydrogen preparation, namely dimethyl ether steam reforming and autothermal reforming, are introduced. Reforming of dimethyl ether is one of the desired hydrogen sources for fuel cells, if proper catalysts are chosen. In this paper, recent advances in the field of catalyst for dimethyl ether reforming are reviewed, including their catalytic performance, reaction conditions, products, catalytic mechanism, and dynamic analysis. Reformers and its future research work in the area are suggested.

Abstract:The progress in developing one-step technology for dimethyl ether (DME) mass production by Tsinghua Univer-sity and Chongqing Yingli Fuels Chemicals Co. Ltd. has been introduced. The new process, using a circulating slurry reactor,acquired a substantial breakthrough in the industrialization of the one-step DME technology and obtained approving results inthe pilot plant: the once-through CO conversion reached to over 60% and the selectivity of DME over 94%.

Poly(oxymethylene) dimethyl ethers of chain length 3-5 ( ) are discussed as synthetic diesel fuels due to their potential to significantly reduce soot emissions while presenting physicochemical properties similar to conventional diesel fuels. A recently developed process to produce directly from methanol and aqueous formaldehyde is a promising way to avoid expensive intermediates such as trioxane, methylal, or dimethyl ether. The process consists of a reactor, a distillation sequence, and a membrane unit. The first distillation column is particularly challenging due to the reactive character of the separation, the high number of components present, and the limited solubility of formaldehyde. Up to now, the feasibility of this separation has yet to be demonstrated. This work presents closed-loop experiments in a demonstration plant erected at the Campus Straubing of the Technical University of Munich with closing recycle. In the distillation step, with with very small impurities of around 800 ppm of formaldehyde was obtained. The experimental results were compared with simulations based on a reactive equilibrium stage model. The simulations of the temperature and composition profiles for the majority of the components are in line with the experiments. Although the membrane separation exhibited weaker water selectivity than in previous tests, it was sufficient to overcome distillation boundaries. Additionally, this study assesses the potential for solid precipitation, explores trade-offs in product quality, and discusses overall mass balances of the process, demonstrating the overall feasibility of the process. Abstract:Dimethyl carbonate is an important green chemical that has been widely used in the chemical industry. In the production of dimethyl carbonate, methanol oxidative carbonylation has been studied, but the conversion ratio of dimethyl carbonate using this method is too low, and the subsequent separation requires a large amount of energy due to methanol and dimethyl carbonate being azeotrope. In this paper, the strategy of "reaction instead of separation" is proposed. Based on this strategy, a novel process is developed to combine the production of DMC with that of dimethoxymethane (DMM) and dimethyl ether (DME). The co-production process was simulated using Aspen Plus software, and the product purity was up to 99.9%. The exergy analysis of the co-production process and the existing process was carried out. The exergy destruction and exergy efficiency were compared with those of the existing production processes. The results show that the exergy destruction of the co-production process is about 276% less than that of the single-production processes, and the exergy efficiencies in the developed co-production process are significantly improved. The utility loads of the co-production process are significantly lower than that of the single-production process. The developed co-production process increases the methanol conversion ratio to 95%, with a reduced energy requirement. It is proved that the developed co-production process can provide an advantageous option over the existing processes with improved energy efficiency and material savings. The strategy of "reaction instead of separation" is feasible. A new strategy is proposed for azeotrope separation.

Abstract:The production of dimethyl ether from renewables or waste is a promising strategy to push towards a sustainable energy transition of alternative eco-friendly diesel fuel. In this work, we simulate the synthesis of dimethyl ether from a syngas (a mixture of CO, CO2 and H2) produced from gasification of digestate. In particular, a thermodynamic analysis was performed to individuate the best process conditions and syngas conditioning processes to maximize yield to dimethyl etehr (DME). Process simulation was carried out by ChemCAD software, and it was particularly focused on the effect of process conditions of both water gas shift and CO2 absorption by Selexol® on the syngas composition, with a direct influence on DME productivity. The final best flowsheet and the best process conditions were evaluated in terms of CO2 equivalent emissions. Results show direct DME synthesis global yield was higher without the WGS section and with a carbon capture equal to 85%. The final environmental impact was found equal to −113 kgCO2/GJ, demonstrating that DME synthesis from digestate may be considered as a suitable strategy for carbon dioxide recycling.

Abstract:The thermodynamic properties of dimethyl ether, including PVT property, vapor pressure and latent heat of vaporization, etc. are calculated by using the theory of molecular thermodynamics. The obtained results are in good agreement with the experimental data. It shows that the proposed equations can well represent the thermodynamic behaviour of molecules for dimethyl ether. In addition, this also shows that the proposed methods may be used for engineering calculation.
