Abstract:Synchrotron radiation of wavelength 0.5 Angstrom has been employed at the Daresbury SRS station 9.1 to investigate the practicality of using it for internal and near surface strain scanning in transmission geometry through relatively low density material or thin components. Calibration measurements have been made through a 'strain-free' aluminium powder cell and the strain distribution through the thickness of an aluminium alloy plate, heavily peened on one side has been investigated. Beam instability, which was an initial problem, has been substantially overcome. The results indicate that synchrotron strain scanning could be developed into a fast and highly practical non-destructive transmission technique that would be complementary to established near-back-reflection X-ray strain scanning methods.
