Abstract:Molecular dynamics simulations are performed to investigate the mechanical behavior of nanotwinned NiCo-based alloys containing coherent L12 nano-precipitates at different temperatures, as well as the interactions between the dislocations and nano-precipitates within the nanotwins. The simulation results demonstrate that both the yield stress and flow stress in the nanotwinned NiCo-based alloys with nano-precipitates decrease as the temperature rises, because the higher temperatures lead to the generation of more defects during yielding and lower dislocation density during plastic deformation. Moreover, the coherent L12 phase exhibits excellent thermal stability, which enables the hinderance of dislocation motion at elevated temperatures via the wrapping and cutting mechanisms of dislocations. The synergistic effect of nanotwins and nano-precipitates results in more significant strengthening behavior in the nanotwinned NiCo-based alloys under high temperatures. In addition, the high-temperature mechanical behavior of nanotwinned NiCo-based alloys with nano-precipitates is sensitive to the size and volume fraction of the microstructures. These findings could be helpful for the design of nanotwins and nano-precipitates to improve the high-temperature mechanical properties of NiCo-based alloys.

Abstract:This article focuses on in situ transmission electron microscope (TEM) characterization to explore twins in face-centered-cubic and body-centered-cubic monolithic metals, and their impact on the overall mechanical performance. Taking advantage of simultaneous nanomechanical deformation and nanoscale imaging using versatile in situ TEM tools, direct correlation of these unique microscopic defects with macroscopic mechanical performance becomes possible. This article summarizes recent evidence to support the mechanisms related to strengthening and plasticity in metals, including nanotwinned Cu, Ni, Al, Au, and others in bulk, thin film, and nanowire forms.
TEM study of the mechanism of Ni ion release from Nitinol wires with original oxides

Abstract:The surface of commercial Nitinol wires with original oxides and a thickness in the 30-190 nm range was investigated by different state of art TEM techniques. The oxide surface layer was identified as a combination of TiO and TiO2 depending on the processing of the wire. Between the core of the wires and the oxidized surface, an interfacial Ni3Ti nanolayer was observed while Ni nanoparticles are found inside the original oxide. The particle sizes, their distribution in the surface and the Ti-O stoichiometry were deduced from the analysis of the obtained data. Molecular dynamics calculations performed for evaluation of the stability of Ni particles relative to the atomic state revealed that a pure Ni particle has a lower energy than free Ni atoms inside the TiO2 lattice. The obtained results are discussed with respect to surface stability and Ni release in the human body.
Recent Electron Microscopy Results on Micro- and Nanostructured Ni-Ti-(X) Shape Memory Alloys

Abstract:The present contribution will focus on recent advanced transmission electron microscopy studies of Ni-Ti based alloys with the emphasis on features related to the martensitic transformation. The examples range from the atomic scale when looking at the atomic structure of a precipitate to the micron scale when looking at the configuration of these precipitates or to twin configurations in particular ternary alloys. An example of the first is the refinement of the atomic structure of a Ni4Ti3 precipitate formed in Ni-rich Ni-Ti alloys to enhance the shape memory behaviour. A slice-and-view study to obtain the 3D configuration of these precipitates is an example of the latter. Some other examples will be discussed as well.

Abstract:64-keV Ni ion implantation was performed at room temperature up to a dose of 1 × 10 17 cm −2 in α -Al 2 O 3 single crystals. The charge states, structure and optical properties of metallic embedded Ni nanoparticles were studied by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and optical spectroscopy, respectively. XPS analysis showed that implanted Ni ions are mainly in charge state of metallic Ni 0 . Nanoparticles distributed from the surface to 30 nm below the surface were observed in a bright-field cross-sectional image. The size of nanoparticles ranges from 1 to 5 nm in diameter. A selected area electron diffraction (SAED) pattern shows Ni nanoparticles with lattice parameter a = 0.352 nm. A high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM) image indicated the Ni-implanted area had been entirely amorphized. A new broad absorption band centered at 400 nm appeared in the optical absorption spectrum of the as-implanted crystal, due to surface plasma resonance (SPR) of Ni nanoparticles.

We did not find any emission band in the as-implanted sample under a Xe lamp excitation wavelength of 250–430 nm in a spectrophotometer.

Abstract:Today, due to its unique mechanical properties, durability and biocompatibility, applications of Nitinol in a wide variety of medical implants are progressively increasing [1–3]. However, as Nitinol consists of about 50 at. % Ni, certain applications are still hindered by the concern of free Ni release in the surrounding tissue. It is known that the biocompatibility of the implants made from TiNi alloys depends on a corrosion resistant titanium oxide layer avoiding the severe toxicological and allergic responses of Ni. The latter is controlled by the structure of (near-) surface layers which can strongly be affected by various surface treatments [3,4]. In this present work, the oxide surface of an as-received Nitinol micro-wire is investigated by different TEM techniques. FIB was used to prepare near surface cross-section sample.

Abstract:Ni-doped ZnO (ZnO:Ni) films were fabricated on Si(001) substrates by reactive electron beam evaporation at low substrate temperature. The as-grown films were then annealed in oxygen ambient at higher temperatures. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results indicated that 5at.% Ni-doped samples are still of single phase with the ZnO-like wurtzite structure. Photoluminescence (PL) measurements of Ni-doped samples illustrated the UV-PL emission centered at about 384nm, which is ascribed to the near-band-edge (NBE) emissions of ZnO-like band structures. The UV-PL intensity becomes stronger along with the increase of annealing temperatures and reaches a maximum magnitude after annealed at 450°C. However, along with the further increase of annealing temperatures, UV-PL intensity diminishes again. The UV-PL intensity of 450°C-annealed samples is 213 times stronger than that of as-grown (doped) samples, which may render potential applications in optoelectronic devices, such as UV luminescent devices.

Abstract:NiAl2O4 coated Al2O3 nanopowder was prepared by oxidizing at high temperature. First Al2O3 nanopowder was coated with Ni by electroless plating, and then the Ni/Al2O3 powder was calcined at 1350°C. TEM observation shows the shape of Ni/Al2O3 particle is globoid and the particle size is 50~60 nm. DTA analysis shows that new phases of Ni/Al2O3 are formed at 900°C and 1300°C, which are NiO and NiAl2O4 by XRD testing respectively.

Abstract:This in situ TEM study investigated the effect of sample thickness on the martensitic transformation of NiTi. The transformation temperature gradually decreased with decreasing sample thickness. No transformation was observed when the thickness was below a critical value. The critical thickness values for the R phase and martensitic transformations were determined to be similar to 22 nm and similar to 50 nm, respectively, for the Ti-50.8 at.%Ni alloy studied. This apparent "size effect" was attributed to the depletion of Ti in the matrix caused by surface oxidation, as confirmed by oxygen content measurements. These findings demonstrate that natural oxidation and its influence on the transformation temperature must be taken into consideration in the fabrication of micro-electro-mechanical devices using NiTi. Abstract:Polycrystalline Ni nanowires have been prepared by electrochemical deposition in an anodic alumina membrane template with a nanopore size of about 60 nm. In situ heating extended x-ray absorption fine structure and x-ray diffraction techniques are used to probe the atomic structures. The nanowires are identified as being mixtures of nanocrystallites and amorphous phase. The nanocrystallites have the same thermal expansion coefficient, of 1.7 × 10−5 K−1, as Ni bulk; however, the amorphous phase has a much larger thermal expansion coefficient of 3.5 × 10−5 K−1. Details of the Ni nanowire structures are discussed in this paper.

Abstract:The microstructure evolution of Ni-25at.% Al thin films prepared by magnetron co-sputtering is investigated by using in-situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) study from room temperature to 750°C. The diffraction rings of both Ni and Al are present in the selected area electron diffraction (SAED) of as-deposited films, and then the diffraction ring of Al disappears when the films are heated up to 300°C. At 500 and 700°C, the diffraction rings and spots of L12 intermetallic Ni3Al phase are found, respectively, which means that the formation of ordered Ni3Al phase starts from 500°C. Moreover, it is found that the grain growth is relatively slow when the temperature is lower than 300°C, while all of normal grain growth, abnormal grain growth and annealing twinning occur at higher temperatures.

Abstract:ZnO-TiO2 core-shell nanowires were prepared by a thermal reduction method and an atomic layer deposition (ALD) technique. The effects of deposition thickness, deposition temperature and annealing on crystallization and structure of ZnO-TiO2 core-shell nanowires were studied. ZnO-TiO2 core-shell nanowires were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The results show that TiO2 shell is transformed from amorphous to crystallization with the increasing of the deposition thickness and deposition temperature. After 500 degrees C annealing, the crystallinity of TiO2 shell is improved, but wavy deformation is observed in the fine core-shell nanowires (the diameter of ZnO nanowires < 80 urn). As for amorphous TiO2 shell deposited at 150 degrees C after 500 degrees C annealing, convex grains are formed on the TiO2 shell and the loss of ZnO appears at the ZnO-TiO2 interface.
