We study the structural evolution of Sn nanoparticles during electrochemical lithiation-delithiation cycling by in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The beta-Sn nanoparticles in the size range of 79-526 nm are lithiated to the crystal Li22Sn5 phase via a two-step mechanism, and no cracking or fracture, is observed, distinct from the lithiation-induced fracture in micron-sized Sn particles. Lithiation can induce the aggregation of small Sn nanoparticles with diameter in tens of nanometers, while delithiation can lead to the pulverization of large Sn nanoparticles. Similarly, the aggregation and pulverization of Sit nanoparticles are also observed daring sodiation and desodiation, respectively. The delithiation/desodiation induced pulverization of Sn nanoparticles is attributed to the high dealloying rate that results in cracks and voids in dealloyed Sn anodes. Based on our in situ TEM results, a size-dependent ' pulverization mechanism of Sn particles is proposed. Abstract:Rechargeable batteries that make renewable energy resources feasible for electrification technologies have been extensively investigated. Their corresponding performance is strongly dependent on the structural characteristics and chemical dynamics of internal electrode and electrolyte materials under operating conditions. To enhance battery performance and lifetime, a comprehensive understanding of the structure‐dynamics‐performance correlation of such materials under different working conditions is of great significance. Fortunately, in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) encompassing high‐resolution imaging, diffraction, and spectroscopic analysis, offers unprecedented insights into the nano/atomic scale structural changes and degradation pathways of rechargeable battery materials under operational conditions. Such insights are pivotal for a deep‐rooted understanding of reaction mechanisms and the structure‐activity interplay within battery materials. This work, therefore, highlights the advances in in situ TEM's utility in unveiling dynamic chemical and physical changes in real‐time within battery materials of rechargeable batteries. Electrochemical processes and degradation mechanisms are systematically explored and summarized. Moreover, the technical progress, challenges, and valuable insights provided by in situ TEM techniques for addressing critical issues in battery materials are underscored. The work concludes with a discussion of emerging research directions that hold the potential to revolutionize the renewable energy field in the near future.
Correlating Structural Changes and Gas Evolution during the Thermal Decomposition of Charged Li x Ni 0.8 Co 0.15 Al 0.05 O 2 Cathode

Abstract:In this work, we present results from the application of a new in situ technique that combines time- resolved synchrotron X-ray diffraction and mass spectroscopy. We exploit this approach to provide direct correlation between structural changes and the evolution of gas that occurs during the thermal decomposition of (over)charged cathode materials used in lithium-ion batteries. Results from charged LixNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 cathode materials indicate that the evolution of both O2 and CO2 gases are strongly related to phase transitions that occur during thermal decomposition, specifically from the layered structure (space group R3 )t o the disordered spinel structure (Fd3), and finally to the rock- salt structure (Fm3). The state of charge also significantly affects both the structural changes and the evolution of oxygen as the temperature increases: the more extensive the charge, the lower the temperature of the phase transitions and the larger the oxygen release. Ex situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) are also utilized to investigate the local structural and valence state changes in Ni and Co ions, and to characterize microscopic morphology changes. The combination of these advanced tools provides a unique approach to study fundamental aspects of the dynamic physical and chemical changes that occur during thermal decomposition of charged cathode materials in a systematic way.

Abstract:Layer structured oxides with transition metals such as Ni, Co, and Mn have been considered as good cathode materials to replace LiCoO2 for lithium batteries due to their lower cost and higher capacity. The thermal instability in charged, especially over charged states at elevated temperatures, however, is still a major concern on this class of materials. Recently, we have developed a technique using the combination of a high intensity synchrotron x-ray beam and a fast image plate detector to do time resolved x-ray diffraction during the thermal decomposition of charged cathode materials in the presence of electrolyte. In order to understand the controlling mechanism of thermal runaway of the electrodes in Li-ion cells, we have monitored structural changes of the charged nickel-based cathode materials in the presence of electrolyte. We have also developed synchrotron based in situ and ex situ soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) techniques which allows us to distinguish the structural differences between surface and bulk of electrodes using both electron yield (EY) and fluorescence yield (FY) detectors simultaneously. In this presentation, we will report our studies on the structural changes of cathode materials during heating with and without the presence of the electrolytes, as well as the structural differences between the surface and the bulk during heating. Our recent studies on Co, Al, Mn doped LiNiO2-based materials using time-resolved X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) with or without the presence of electrolyte show a series of phase transformations during heating [1]. However, due to the averaging nature of X-ray techniques, detailed information about how the structure changes initiated and propagated through new phase nucleation and growth in the microscopic level is quite limited. Therefore further studies using a local probe with high spatial resolution are needed. Here, we present our insitu transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies on the structural changes of over charged Li0.0Ni0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 and Li0.0Ni1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O cathode materials during heating, in comparison with our XRD and XAS studies. High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and electron diffraction were carried out using JEM-3000F equipped with an ultra high resolution (UHR) objective-lens pole-piece, an offaxis 1024 x 1024 Gatan slow-scan camera, a post column Gatan imaging filter (GIF), a NORAN X-ray detector, and a Gatan double-tilt heating stage capable with temperature ranging from room temperature to 1000 oC. The Li0.0Ni0.8Co0.15Al0.05O2 particles harvested from overcharged cell were first examined at room temperature. Electron diffraction and HRTEM show that the main phase is a layered structure with rhombohedral symmetry. Interestingly, rock-salt structure and spinel structure, which only observed at elevated temperatures using X-ray techniques, were presented at the edges and thin areas of the particles, respectively even at room temperature. This implies that after overcharging, the particles start losing some oxygen atoms near the particle surface, resulting in the structural changes. By heating the sample, we observed that the phase with the spinel structure nucleates and grows more and more into the thick area of the particles, while the rock-salt phase propagates from the surface to the interior of the particles. After heating the sample to 400 oC, the structure of the whole sample completely transformed to the rock-salt structure. For the over-charged Li0.0Ni1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 sample, spinel structure was also observed on the surfaces of the particles at room temperature. The olivine-structured LiFePO4 and LiFeMPO4 (M=Mn, Co, Ni) solid solution type cathode materials have been studied intensively recently [2-8], due to their high thermal and electrochemical stabilities and good safety characteristics. The in depth understanding of the structural changes during charge-discharge cycles will provide guidance for developing new materials. Using synchrotron based in situ XRD, hard and soft x-ray XAS, and TEM, the structural changes of these materials have been studied during chargedischarge cycling. The differences of phase transition processes between the surface and the bulk will be discussed.

Abstract:Using analytical transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques reveal a zigzag layer on surface of the cycled particles of LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 cathode after 300 discharge/charge cycles. The Ni, Mn content in the zigzag layer of the cycled particle has decreased rapidly from interior to edge of the zigzag layer of the cycled particles. The structure of LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 oxide was gradually destructed from hexagonal cell with P3112 at interior region to fcc lattice of α-NaFeO2 at edge of the zigzag layer of the cycled particles. These experimental data provide the compositional and structural origins of the capacity decrease in the Li-ion battery.
Unraveling Structural Evolution of Lini0.5mn1.5o4 by in Situ Neutron Diffraction

Abstract:The electrochemical properties of the spinel LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 cathode material are influenced by the synthesis processes, which determines the impurity phase and the distribution of Ni and Mn in the spinel structure. Taking advantage of neutron's high sensitivity to Ni and Mn, in situ neutron diffraction has been employed to quantify the phase formation/structural evolution process under continuous heating/cooling and isothermal annealing conditions. The results show that the subtle Ni and Mn ordering process occurs slowly at 700 degrees C and the degree of ordering can be controlled by the annealing time. At temperatures above 750 degrees C, the LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 spinel phase starts to decompose into the rock-salt impurity phase accompanied by the release of O-2. The rock-salt phase reverts back to the spinel phase upon cooling along with the oxygen uptake. The dynamic process of structural evolution of LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 that was unraveled by in situ neutron diffraction is valuable for guiding the synthesis of cathode materials with desirable properties.

Abstract:By virtue of the crucial effect of the crystal structure and transition metal(TM) redox evolution on the performance of LiNi x Co y Mn z O 2 (NCM) cathode,systematical investigation is carried out to better understand the charge mechanism upon deep charging.Based on the results of X-ray diffraction and highresolution transmission electron microscope,phase transformations existing on particle surface are promoted by high potential because of the deeper lithium vacancies,accompanied by more substantial structure instability.Soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy indicates that Ni acts as the major contributor to charge compensation while Co displays a remarkable redox activity over the deep charge range.The elevated integrated intensity of pre-edge in O K-edge spectra reveals the extensive amount of holes formed in O 2 p orbitals and the enhanced hybridization of TM 3 d-O 2 p orbitals.Considering the close relationship between thermal behavior and structural evolution,the tendency of phase transitions and O 2 release upon heating is accelerated by voltage rise,demonstrating the aggravated instability due to deeper Li utilization.Remaining Li contents in NCM are employed to estimate the amount of oxygen released in structural transformation and its detrimental effect on stability declares Li contentdependent characteristics.Furthermore,the extended Li vacancies,higher proportion of Ni 4+ and stronger orbital hybridization are considered as three factors impeding the thermal stability of the highlydelithiated NCM.

Abstract:We report a method for in situ atomic-scale observation of electrochemical delithiation in a working all-solid-state battery using a state-of-the-art chip based in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) holder and focused ion beam milling to prepare an all-solid-state lithium-ion battery sample. A battery consisting of LiCoO2 cathode, LLZO solid state electrolyte and gold anode was constructed, delithiated and observed in an aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscope at atomic scale. We found that the pristine single crystal LiCoO2 became nanosized polycrystal connected by coherent twin boundaries and antiphase domain boundaries after high voltage delithiation. This is different from liquid electrolyte batteries, where a series of phase transitions take place at LiCoO2 cathode during delithiation. Both grain boundaries become more energy favorable along with extraction of lithium ions through theoretical calculation. We also proposed a lithium migration pathway before and after polycrystallization. This new methodology could stimulate atomic scale in situ scanning/TEM studies of battery materials and provide important mechanistic insight for designing better all-solid-state battery.

Abstract:In typical charge and discharge cycling, electrodes may exhibit metastable phases with unusual ordering to repeatedly host and extract lithium-ion and electrons. This is a clear consequence of not enough time and/or energy available for such metastable phases to relax and transform into their equilibrium counterparts (1). Such metastable structures may exist only for a short duration, which makes it extremely difficult to measure or even identify them experimentally. Yet, they clearly play important roles in the battery figures of merit, such as cycling stability, voltage hysteresis, to capacity. The recent developments in in-situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) (2-6) has enabled us to observe de/lithiation processes at atomic resolution, identify metastable phases and monitor their continuous phase transformation, with the gradual addition of lithium-ions and electrons into the battery electrodes. Structural models of these metastable phases are derived from full DFT simulations, and seem to corroborate with high resolution phase contrast simulated images as compared to corresponding experimental ones. Li-Co-O system represents one of the most important materials for lithium-ion battery with rich chemistry and structures, i.e. LiCoO2 has been used as intercalated cathode in the first commercialized battery by SONY, while Co3O4 and CoO are found to be high-capacity anode materials with conversion reaction: MxOy + 2y Li+ + 2y e= xM0 + yLi2O. Here, Co3O4 nanoparticles grown on highly conductive multi-wall carbon nanotubes (CNT) are employed as a model material system to study the structural evolutions with different amount of lithium inserted or reacted during electrochemical activation. The in-situ electrochemical lithiation experiments were followed until cobalt oxide nanoparticles are completely reduced into Co nanoparticles along with the formation of Li2O by conversion reaction and reverse de-lithiation until return back to cobalt oxide. When lithium-ions are introduced at lower rate, metastable lithium-inserted LixCo3O4 (x=1 to 5) crystalline phases are observed prior to formation of Co0 and Li2O clusters as the product of conversion reaction. At higher rate, lithium-ions can occupy any empty sites simultaneously that instantly break the Co3O4 spinel lattice bypassing the metastable crystalline phases. The amount of lithium-ions intake in a low rate is larger than that of the high rate, which provides insight on the charge/discharge rate and capacity relation. The presentation will cover intricacies of such metastable structures and the overall dynamics of electrochemical processes, as monitored by in-situ TEM imaging, spectroscopy and diffraction.

Abstract:It is well-known that upon lithiation, both crystalline and amorphous Si transform to an armorphous Li(x)Si phase, which subsequently crystallizes to a (Li, Si) crystalline compound, either Li(15)Si(4) or Li(22)Si(5). Presently, the detailed atomistic mechanism of this phase transformation and the degradation process in nanostructured Si are not fully understood. Here, we report the phase transformation characteristic and microstructural evolution of a specially designed amorphous silicon (a-Si) coated carbon nanofiber (CNF) composite during the charge/discharge process using in situ transmission electron microscopy and density function theory molecular dynamic calculation. We found the crystallization of Li(15)Si(4) from amorphous Li(x)Si is a spontaneous, congruent phase transition process without phase separation or large-scale atomic motion, which is drastically different from what is expected from a classic nucleation and growth process. The a-Si layer is strongly bonded to the CNF and no spallation or cracking is observed during the early stages of cyclic charge/discharge. Reversible volume expansion/contraction upon charge/discharge is fully accommodated along the radial direction. However, with progressive cycling, damage in the form of surface roughness was gradually accumulated on the coating layer, which is believed to be the mechanism for the eventual capacity fade of the composite anode during long-term charge/discharge cycling.

Abstract:Using a combination of time-resolved X-ray diffraction (XRD), in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and first principles calculations, we explore the structural origin of the overcharge induced thermal instability of two cathode materials, LiNi(0.8)Co(0.15)Al(0.05)O(2) and LiNi(1/3)Co(1/3)Mn(1/3)O(2), which exhibit significant difference in thermal stabilities. Detailed TEM analysis reveals, for the first time, a complex core shell-surface structure of the particles in both materials that was not previously detected by XRD. Structural comparison indicates that the overcharged Li(x)Ni(0.8)Co(0.15)Al(0.05)O(2) (x < 0.15) particles consist of a rhombohedral core, a spinel shell, and a rock-salt structure at the surface, while the overcharged Li(x)Ni(1/3)Co(1/3)Mn(1/3)O(2) consists of a similar core shell-surface structure but a very different CdI(2)-type surface structure. The thermal instability of Li(x)Ni(0.8)Co(0.15)Al(0.05)O(2) can be attributed to the release of oxygen because of the rapid growth of the rock-salt-type structure on the surface during heating. In contrast, the CdI(2)-type surface structure of the overcharged Li(x)Ni(1/3)Co(1/3)Mn(1/3)O(2) particles delays the oxygen release reaction to a much higher temperature resulting in better stability. These results gave deep insight into the relationship between the local structural changes and the thermal stability of cathode materials, which is vital to the development of new cathode materials for the next generation of lithium ion batteries.

Abstract:The Ni-rich cathode is one of the most promising materials for application in high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries. However, the inherent thermal instability of this material raises the risk of thermal runaway, which presents a significant obstacle to its eventual commercialization. At present, the in-depth mechanism of how grain structure affects the thermal stability of Ni-rich cathodes remains unclear. In this work, we study the thermal degradation behavior of polycrystalline and single-crystal NCM811 cathodes from multiple dimensions based on a series of state-of-the-art physicochemical characterization tools combined with theoretical calculations, report different degradation pathways of polycrystalline and single-crystal cathodes, and investigate the enhancement mechanism of single-crystal structure on the thermal stability of cathodes from the atomic scale. The larger grain size and better integrity of single-crystal NCM811 particle effectively retard the oxygen vacancy formation and increase oxygen vacancy diffusion paths at high temperatures. As a result, the diffusion of oxygen vacancies is kinetically unfavorable during heating, which delays the degradation of its lattice structure and the release of oxygen. This work provides insight into the thermal failure mechanisms of Ni-rich cathode materials with different grain structures and offers an essential theoretical basis for designing future thermally stable cathode materials.

Abstract:Thermally induced oxygen release is an intrinsic structural instability in layered cathodes, which causes thermal runaway issues and becomes increasingly critical with the continuous improvement in energy density. Furthermore, thermal runaway events always occur in electrochemically aged cathodes, where the coupling of the thermal and electrochemical effect remains elusive. Herein, we report the anomalous segregation of cobalt metal in an aged LiCoO 2 cathode, which is attributed to the local exposure of the high-energy (100) surface of LiCoO 2 and weak interface Co–O dangling bonds significantly promoting the diffusion of Co. The presence of the LCO–Co interface severely aggregated the oxygen release in the form of dramatic Co growth. A unique particle-to-particle oxygen release pathway was also found, starting from the isolated high reduction areas induced by the cycling heterogeneity. This study provides atomistic insight into the robust coupling between the intrinsic structural instability and electrochemical cycling.

Abstract:While Li ion batteries are intended to be operated within a mild temperature window, their structural and chemical complexity could lead to unanticipated local electrochemical events that could cause extreme temperature spikes, which, in turn, could trigger more undesired and sophisticated reactions in the system. Visualizing and understanding the response of battery electrode materials to thermal abuse conditions could potentially offer a knowledge basis for the prevention and mitigation of the safety hazards. Here we show a comprehensive investigation of thermally driven chemomechanical interplay in a Li0.5Ni0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2 (charged NMC622) cathode material. We report that, at the early stage of the thermal abuse, oxygen release and internal Li migration occur concurrently, and are accompanied by mechanical disintegration at the mesoscale. At the later stage, Li protrusions are observed on the secondary particle surface due to the limited lithium solubility in non-layered lattices. The extraction of both oxygen and lithium from the host material at elevated temperature could influence the chemistry and safety at the cell level via rearrangement of the electron and ion diffusion pathways, reduction of the coulombic efficiency, and/or causing an internal short circuit that could provoke a thermal runaway.

Abstract:Nonuniform and highly localized Li dendrites are known to cause deleterious and, in many cases, catastrophic effects on the performance of rechargeable Li batteries. However, the mechanisms of cathode failures upon contact with Li metal are far from clear. In this study, using in situ transmission electron microscopy, the interaction of Li metal with well-defined, epitaxial thin films of LiCoO2 , the most widely used cathode material, is directly visualized at an atomic scale. It is shown that a spontaneous and prompt chemical reaction is triggered once Li contact is made, leading to expansion and pulverization of LiCoO2 and ending with the final reaction products of Li2 O and Co metal. A topotactic phase transition is identified close to the reaction front, resulting in the formation of CoO as a metastable intermediate. Dynamic structural and chemical imaging, in combination with ab initio simulations, reveal that a high density of grain and antiphase boundaries is formed at the reaction front, which are critical for enabling the short-range topotactic reactions and long-range Li propagation. The fundamental insights are of general importance in mitigating Li dendrites related issues and guiding the design principle for more robust energy materials.

Abstract:Nanostructured transition-metal oxides have been under intensive investigation for their tantalizing potential as anodes of next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the exact mechanism for nanostructures to influence the LIB performance remains largely elusive. In this work, we discover the nanostructure-mediated lithiation mechanism in Co3O4 anodes using ex situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffractometry: while Co3O4 nanosheets exhibit a typical two-step conversion reaction (from Co3O4 to CoO and then to Co0), Co3O4 nanoarrays can go through a direct conversion from Co3O4 to Co0 at a high discharge rate. Such nanostructure-dependent lithiation can be rationalized by the slow lithiation kinetics intrinsic to Co3O4 nanoarrays, which at a high discharge rate may cause local accumulation of lithium to initiate a one-step Co3O4-to-Co0 conversion. Combined with the larger volume change observed in Co3O4 nanoarrays, the slow lithiation kinetics can lead to inhomogeneous expansion with large stress developed at the reaction front, which can eventually cause structure failure and irreversible capacity loss, as explicitly observed by in situ TEM as well as galvanostatic discharge-charge measurement. Our observation resolves the nanostructure-dependent lithiation mechanism of Co3O4 and provides important insights into the interplay among lithiation kinetics, phase evolution, and lithium-storage performance, which can be translated into electrode design strategies for next-generation LIBs.

Abstract:The combination of thermogravimetric analysis, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis and mass spectrometry (TG-IR-MS) are used to explore the kinetic characteristics and thermal stabilities of Li(Ni1/3Co1/3Mn1/3)O-2 (NCM111) cathode under different states of charge (SOC). The sequence and amount of gas products generated during the thermal decomposition of cathode material are identified through thermogravimetric analysis combined with the FTIR spectrum and mass spectrometry. It is found that the amount of oxygen generation is proportional to SOC. In addition, Fraser-Suzuki function is used as a deconvolution method to separate the overlapped reaction process. The kinetic analysis of the major reaction stage is carried out. Results show the higher the SOC, the lower the activation energy. X-ray diffraction tests reveals that the structural stability of the cathode is weaken by the increase of SOC. The micro-calorimeter tests indicate that the thermal stability of coexist system decreases with the increase of SOC. This research can provide valuable information for the research on the thermal runaway mechanism of lithium-ion batteries and battery safety design.
