Abstract:The circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler is a mainstream technology of biomass combustion generation in China. The high flue gas flow rate and relatively low combustion temperature of CFB make the deposition process different from that of a grate furnace. The dynamic deposition process of biomass ash needs further research, especially in industrial CFB boilers. In this study, a temperature-controlled ash deposit probe was used to sample the deposits in a 12 MW CFB boiler. Through the analysis of multiple deposit samples with different deposition times, the changes in micromorphology and chemical composition of the deposits in each deposition stage can be observed more distinctively. The initial deposits mainly consist of particles smaller than 2 μm, caused by thermophoretic deposition. The second stage is the condensation of alkali metal. Different from the condensation of KCl reported by most previous literatures, KOH is found in deposits in place of KCl. Then, it reacts with SO2, O2 and H2O to form K2SO4. In the third stage, the higher outer layer temperature of deposits reduces the condensation rate of KOH significantly. Meanwhile, the rougher surface of deposits allowed more calcium salts in fly ash to deposit through inertial impact. Thus, the elemental composition of deposits surface shows an overall trend of K decreasing and Ca increasing.

Abstract:To elucidate the mechanism of ash deposition produced by MSW incineration, samples from a mechanical grate (MG) type MSW incinerator were collected and characterized by SEM-EDS, XRF, and XRD. After 172 days of continuous operation, ash deposition on the walls of the HTR and SH3 tubes reached 33 mm and 18 mm. The rate of ash deposition at the HTR position can reach 0.625 mm/d, followed by the SH3 position, which reaches 0.229 mm/d. ECO has the minimum deposition rate, which is 0.02 mm/d. The shedding factor is proposed to describe the shedding phenomenon of ash deposition, and the absolute value of the shedding factor at the HTR position is the largest, which is 2.55 x 10-3 mm/d2. Cl was enriched in deposition sample at SH3, accounting for 10.62%. Alkali metal salts form the initial layer, which is influenced by the temperature of the tube wall. The chemical reaction heat of the sulfation process, which causes ash deposition containing molten or semi-molten material, promotes the sintering effect. The S/Cl molar ratios calculated for ash deposition at HTR and SH3 were 6.9 and 1.4, predicting ash deposition and strong corrosion of the tube walls.

Abstract:Due to the high content of alkali and alkaline earth metals (AAEMs) in Zhundong coal, serious ash-related problems such as slagging and fouling occurred in the process of utilization, which has attracted wide attention. In this work, the ash deposition characteristics in a new type circulating fluidized bed boiler burning Zhundong coal was studied. The effect of steam cooled flue on alleviating slagging problems was evaluated, and the influence of flue gas temperature and wall temperature on ash deposition characteristics were studied. The results showed that the mass of ash deposition and the concentration of submicron particles decrease gradually along the direction of flue gas flow in the steam cooled flue. The deposited ash changed from tightly bound to wall to loosely deposited, which indicated that the arrangement of the steam cooled flue greatly alleviated the slagging problems. Compared with flue gas temperature, the wall temperature had a greater impact on ash deposition characteristics. Mineral elements such as Na, S, Fe and Mg were more likely to enrich on the high temperature wall, while the Ca showed the opposite trend. On the low temperature wall, Na existed in the form of Na 2 SO 4 and Na 2 Si 2 O 5 , while on the high temperature wall, the direct condensation of alkali metal vapor was prevented and the thermophoresis disappeared, so Na mainly existed in the form of Na 2 Si 2 O 5 .

Abstract:Ash deposition is the most acute problem that hinders safe and efficient operations of coal-fired boilers. In this paper, we investigate the ash deposition process by incorporating in situ observations with standard procedures of ash deposit sampling. A specially calibrated digital camera is used. A sodium-rich Zhundong (ZD) lignite, a Si/Al-dominated bituminous coal, and their blend were burned in a 25 kW down-fired furnace. The deposits were collected at a position with flue gas temperatures of 850 degrees C. The newly developed RGB pyrometry quantitatively measures the deposit surface temperature in a range of 800-1150 K. During the dynamic deposition process, the deposit surface temperature approaches the local flue gas temperature within 1 h of elapsed time. The heterogeneity of the deposit surface is caused by either the deposition of burning coarse particles or the shedding event of the deposit layer with a low cohesive strength. The deposit structure is characterized by its packing ratio, which positively correlates with the deposit mass load. Moreover, the effective thermal conductivity of the deposit can be derived from a "two-resistance" model and ranges from 0.14 to 0.32 W m(-1) K-1. After ZD lignite is blended with the bituminous coal, the shedding period of the ash deposit is greatly reduced. The effective conductivity of the deposit is also enhanced in a nonlinear manner.

Abstract:Ash deposition play an important role in the development of advanced biomass combustion system,since it not only causes a lower boiler efficiency,but also even brings the shutdowns of a boiler. In this paper,the deposits generated from a pilot-scale down-fired combustor of both biomass and coal were sampled by an air-cooled temperature-controlled probe.Sawdust and Yankuang coal were used.The collection efficiency,impaction efficiency and capture efficiency were analyzed,respectively. The results indicated the co-firing cases easily caused ash deposition on the probe surface.Analysis by SEM/EDS shows alkali matter play an important role in deposition.The condensation of alkali matter on particle surface increase the viscosity.At the same time,the significant increase of deposition tendency can be attributed to the combination of the aluminosilicate from coal with the alkali and alkali earth metals from sawdust,which forms the new eutectics with a lower melting temperature.

Abstract:As a CO2-neutral renewable energy, biomass combustion is encouraged to reduce global-warming gas emissions in China. The severe fouling and slagging problem because of high alkali and alkaline earth metal contents still limit the applications of self-sustained biomass power plants. It is essential to study the dynamic behavior of ash deposition in pure biomass combustion. In this paper, three kinds of biomass, saw dust, wheat straw, and corn stover, were burned in a 25 kW one-dimensional down-fired furnace. Three different sampling probe temperatures (550, 600, and 650 degrees C) and four different sampling time periods were chosen, while the deposited ash mass, collection efficiency, deposition morphology, and deposit composition were studied. The results indicate that the deposition mass, collection efficiency, and deposition area all achieve a minimum at an intermediate temperature of 600 degrees C. Highly reactive potassium plays an important role in the ash deposition process, causing a higher deposition rate of wheat straw than corn stover. The results under different sampling time periods indicate that the depositing rate exhibits a trend of a "fast slow fast slow" process. Finally, the governing mechanisms are speculated on the basis of the experimental data, such as deposit morphology and elemental composition.

Abstract:A mathematical model of biomass ash deposition based on inertial impaction, thermophoresis deposition, and condensation was established to predict the ash deposition on the heating surface in a biomass boiler. Compared with the conventional numerical simulation methods, the mathematical models established are more focused on important design parameters in industry and can quickly calculate changes in parameters such as ash and heat flux density of heating area, and the simulated values were in good agreement with the measured results of the actual boiler. The growth of ash deposition on the heating surface of the boiler under different operating conditions was calculated by MATLAB program. The results show that the deposition caused by inertial impaction is dominant among the three deposition mechanisms. While the deposition caused by condensation is the least, accounting for only about 1%. The heat flux is only 1/2 of the initial stage when the ash deposition reaches a steady state. The ash deposition degree increases with the increasing of flue gas velocity, flue gas temperature, and particle size. When the flue gas temperature increases from 923 K to 1123 K, the ash deposition thickness increases from 7.6 mm to 14.2 mm. When the particle size increases from 12 mu m to 20 mu m, the thickness of ash deposition increases from 5.3 mm to 10.7 mm; when the gas velocity increased from 6 m/s to 15 m/s, the thickness of ash deposition increased from 6.5 mm to 10.6 mm. The ash depositions in two corn stalk-fired pure-combustion circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boilers were calculated, and the predicted results of the model were consistent with the actual ash deposition level.

Abstract:Using heat flux probe analysed the slagging characteristics of Shenhua Coal with low melting point and CWS(Coal Water Slurry)with high melting point. The high temperature combustion section and lower temperature section in boiler were correspondingly chosen as simulative slagging and ash deposition region. The change rule of resultant flux and the fouling and slagging characteristics in boiler were discussed with dynamic changes of resultant flux, SEM, XRD and element analysis. The results display: on the high temperature combustion section, the deposition accumulating rate of Shenhua coal is higher than CWS, and the resultant flux attenuation is more rapid; on the lower temperature section in boiler, the ash accumulating rate of Shenhua coal is higher than CWS too, but the resultant flux attenuation is slower than CWS.The complex compound in low melting point——((Ca,Na)Si (4)Al (4)O (8)) and hematite are regarded as the key factor of strong fouling and slagging characteristics.
Experimental study on ash deposition and corrosion in a CFB boiler co-firing biomass with coal

Abstract:During ash decomposition and corrosion tests in a 75 t/h circulating fluidized bed (CFB)boiler burning coal and biomass,the corrosion probe equipped with three kinds of metal samples was placed in front of the superheater,and the superheater tube wall temperature was simulated with a system of air cooling.Three kinds of metal deposition samples were obtained in operating mode (duration time of 24 hours)with three mixing ratios of coal and biomass.The physicochemical property of the samples was ana-lyzed by SEM-EDX.The results show that,under the testing conditions,no deposition was found at the wind side,and the deposition formed at the lee side was different for different metallic materials.No materi-al loss or significant corrosion was detected.It is proved in this study that depositions at the lee side of the superheater were probably more serious than that at the wind side,and the co-combustion of coal and bio-mass containing low levels of alkali metal will not cause serious deposition or corrosion and can be applied in industrial production.
Analysis on Deposition Mechanism of Ash with High Ash Fusion Temperatures on the Heat-insulation Layer in Boiler

Abstract:Analysis and experiments were carried out on one case that ash deposited on the heat-insulation layer(refractory) in one boiler burning coal water slurry with high ash fusion temperatures(AFTs)(with initial deformation temperature above 1 400℃).Elemental analysis shows that both iron and calcium are enriched in the three samples corresponding to different stages of deposition,viz.initial,middle and mature stage respectively.In situ visual observation and scanning electron microscope(SEM) morphology indicate that no fusion occurs for the deposits;X-ray diffractometer(XRD) crystallization phase results show that there is no significant difference between each stage deposits.For each stage deposits,mullite,feldspar and some iron mineral form in the deposits.Specific surface area measurements on coal ash samples sintered at different temperatures were performed using nitrogen adsorption(N2-BET),the results show that below the ash deformation temperature,even though no fusion occurs,the specific surface area decreases with increasing temperature,which gives the evidence that sintering does strongly occur below ash deformation temperature.The enrichment of both iron and calcium leads to strong sintering propensity of the deposited particles,and the strength developed by sintering provides forces to prevent deposits from shedding.

Abstract:Formation of ash deposit on heat transfer surfaces during Zhundong lignite (ZD) combustion in circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler has affected boiler operation and its thermal efficiency. This work therefore characterised the morphology, mineralogy and thermal conductivity of the ash deposits in a 220 MW CFB boiler firing ZD for an improved understanding of deposit characteristics. By using XRF, SEM-EDS, XRD, and laser conductometer, results revealed that deposits on superheaters and reheaters were as thick as 3.0–4.5 cm. Moreover, the inner layer of the deposits consisted of fine ash particles enriching in Na, Ca and S in the forms of Na 2 SO 4 , CaSO 4 , and Na 2 Ca(SO 4 ) 2 , whereas the outer layer comprising CaSO 4 , Na 6 Ca 2 Al 6 Si 6 O 24 (SO 4 ) 2 , Fe 2 O 3 , SiO 2 and Mg 2 SiO 4 with more SiO 2 and Al 2 O 3 presented. Besides, thermal conductivity of the inner layer was ca. 1.83 W/(m · K), and that of the middle layer with an increased pore size was ca. 1.50 W/(m · K), both of them were independent of temperature at 550–900 °C and overweighed the out layer being 0.65–0.82 W/(m · K). This would lead to an increase in coal consumption of ca. 12.9%, highlighting the severity of deposit build-up in adversely impacting the heat transfers and deteriorating the fuel economics during ZD CFB combustion.

Abstract:Ash deposits samples at different locations in a oil-fired boiler,which has suffered severe ash deposition problem,were studied to investigate the mechanism controlling the deposition in different deposition stages and at different zones.The XRF,SEM-EDAX and XRD techniques were used to identify the elemental composition,morphorlogy and mineralogy characteristics respectively.Two typical mature samples which were kept undisturbed were embeded in epoxy resin and then polished,subjected to SEM-EDAX analysis to quantify the elemental composition in the different layers in the direction of deposits growth.The results indicated that in the initial particulate layer,the major elemental content,viz.V,S,Na,Ca,Fe are much higher than the outer layer,while Si and Al show the adverse tendency.This may be due to the vaporized SO3 and V2O5 and the molten Fe2O3 or SiO2 particles covered by melten Fe2O3,which are transferred and then adhered to the deposit surface mainly by the following two machenisms,viz.thermophoresis and condensation.The major minerals in deposits at the water-wall zone is mullite,while for samples from the secondary superheater tube bank(at the furnace exit),besids mullite there are considerable cristobalite and microcline(potassium aluminosili-cates).Some vanadium oxide or salt(i.e.NiV3O8,NaV6O15 and Fe0.125V2O5)are detected for samples from primary superheater tube bank and the econo-mizer zones.
An Experimental Investigation into the Characteristics and Deposition Mechanism of High-Viscosity Coal Ash

Abstract:Coal-fired boilers often develop massive fouling and slagging deposits on heat transfer surfaces in areas where coal ash particles have relatively high viscosities (>= 10(6) Pa s). In order to investigate the characteristics and mechanism of the problems, experiments were performed in a drop tube furnace and by use of a slagging probe in this study. The results showed that fouling deposits developed on the probe in the first stage, and then transformed into partially or fully fused slagging deposits. The deposition of high-viscosity coal ash was closely related to both the experimental conditions and the chemical composition of the ash. A low temperature on the probe surface and a high impact velocity of ash particles significantly inhibited ash deposition for the high-viscosity ash. The relative deposition ratio of high-viscosity ash, defined as the ratio of the mass of the deposit on the probe to the total mass of ash fed into the DTF, increased along with time initially and then diminished after reaching the maximum. Fine ash particles had higher deposition tendency compared to coarse particles, probably due to local eddies between the fingers on the front of the probe. The chemical compositions of coal ashes had an observable effect on the deposition behavior of high-viscosity ash. The findings of this work are significant for understanding the mechanism of high-viscosity ash deposition and determining the effect of key operating conditions relevant to deposition of high-viscosity ash. Abstract:Solid waste incineration is a clean and sustainable approach for solid waste management. However, ash deposition and corrosion remain a critical issue due to fuel's inherent enrichment of alkali chlorine. This study develops an integrated online deposition and corrosion monitoring system to enhance the operational safety and efficiency of solid waste incineration boilers. This system combines linear polarization resistance (LPR) for corrosion rate estimation with heat flux measurements for ash deposition analysis. It can offer a novel approach for real-time monitoring of heat exchangers' safety during solid waste combustion. It was deployed in a full-scale circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler that purely combust solid wastes. Key findings demonstrate the system's capability to deliver continuous, real-time data, crucial for the dynamic control of combustion processes and the maintenance of heat transfer surfaces. Its robust diagnostic capabilities were evident across various scenarios. Specially, initial corrosion rates sharply increase with deposition rates due to the enrichment of alkali chlorine on inner deposit layer, in which chlorine serves as a catalyst, facilitating the rapid penetration and aggravation of corrosion by other agents. As deposit further buildup, the corrosion rate steadily decreases along with surface temperature, highlighting a dynamic interaction. Moreover, measured corrosion rates can quickly response to temperature variations. Such multi-process online monitoring system provide more possibilities to investigate the inherent interaction between deposition and corrosion. Therefore, this work offers insights that could significantly influence operational strategies, maintenance protocols, and the overall reliability of waste-to-energy technologies.

It is suggested that the fragmentation process would have no effect on the particle attrition, which is much different from the previous work. Then the experimental method of coal static combustion and ash cold fluidizing is proposed to get the intrinsic ash formation data and attrition data. For the first time, a new concept of intrinsic ash formation is proposed. The intrinsic ash formation data is only dependent on the fuel itself, which should be considered as a parameter of fuel during the CFB boiler design.

Abstract:Biomass-fired boilers generally undergo severe deposit problems, which is specially serious on intermediate temperature superheaters, while less serious on high and low temperature superheaters. In order to explore the formation mechanism of deposits on intermediate temperature superheaters in biomass-fired boiler, in this paper, the mature deposition on superheaters for one year was analysed by SEM and XRD in details. The deposition on intermediate temperature surface were found to have obvious layer structure and each layer has been analysed separately. The reason why the deposition on intermediate temperature superheaters is especially serious has been discussed, and the formation process of deposits on intermediate temperature superheaters surface is also demonstrated.

In this paper, XRF, XRD, ICP-OES were conducted to analyze the properties of ash deposits collected from different heating surfaces in a 350 MW boiler burning 30% Wudong (WD) and 70% Wucaiwan (WCW) coals. Thermodynamics calculations were applied to study the mineral composition of coal ash in the range of 200-1600 degrees C under different coal co-firing ratio. The analytical results of the ash deposits showed that in medium-temperature (800-1100 degrees C) flue gas zone (FR and FS), ash deposits have higher sulfate content. While in high temperature flue gas zone (WW and PS), ash deposits have higher Si/Al content and lower S content. The Na/S contents in FR (similar to 1000 degrees C) are much higher than in other deposits. The thermal equilibrium calculation results showed that a large amount of liquid Na2SO4 and CaSO4 will be generated when burning WCW coal. Co-firing WD and WCW coals can reduce the amount of sulfate (1/slag) formation and the co-firing ratio greatly influence the elimination effect. It can be speculated that not all the sulfates in the ash deposits are formed in flue gas. The sulfation of the Na-containing minerals condensed on the heating surfaces will promote the ash deposition.
Mineral conversion and thermodynamic simulation of ash deposition during Zhundong coal combustion in boiler of thermal power plant

Abstract:Zhundong coal blending was combusted in a 350 MW boiler. Ash deposits samples at different heat transfer surface ( HTS ) were collected to investigate mineral conversion of each sample. Thermodynamic equilibrium calculation was carried out to give theoretical support by virtue of Factsage 5 . 2 . Different mechanism of each HTS was concluded as follows. At high temperature HTS, albite, anorthite and other phases help eutectics precipitate take shape, which adheres to fly ash particles and forms indurate bulk ash deposits. At low temperature HTS, sulphur-containing species are condensed from flue gas to form deposits with evidence that the main crystalline phase is anhydrite. At economizer HTS, The deposits consisted of amorphous phases carried by flue gas are loosely bonded. Calculated results by Factsage basically agreed with the phase composition of actual samples and are of assistance to mineral conversion analyses.
