Abstract:An adaptive acoustic resonance free electronic ballast for high intensity discharge (HID) lamps is proposed. The ballast implemented a digital method to detect acoustic resonance of HID lamps. The lamp power is kept constant. Simultaneously, end of life detection is also provided. A prototype of the electronic ballast for 250 W metal halide lamp has been built, and the experimental results proved its validity.

Abstract:The volume and the weight of the matching electronic ballasts could be reduced when High Intensity Discharge(HID) lamps operate under high frequency working conditions,which in turn could reduce the cost.However,the problem of acoustic resonance may occur for HID lamps operated at high frequency,which leads to the instability in the arc tubes and forms the difficulty for application.This paper reviews the recent overseas and domestic research progress on the acoustic resonance of HID lamps.The frequency and power threshold of acoustic resonance are summarized.The optical,electric and acoustic methods for parameter measurements of acoustic resonance are introduced.The solutions to acoustic resonance are compared,including frequency windows,DC driven,square wave driven,ultra-high frequency driven,frequency modulation,harmonic injection,white noise modulation,multi-frequencies mixture and signal modulation.This paper proposes to combine the design of HID arc tube parameters and electronic ballast topology systematically for an optimal solution to acoustic resonance.

Abstract:Electronic ballast with ultrahigh frequency (UHF) can avoid the intrinsic problem of acoustic resonance of HID lamps.A novel UHF electronic ballast with dimming feature is proposed in this paper.Based on T type filter,the new ballast can achieve a wide dimming range with a very narrow frequency variation range,and it can operate with low lamp current crest factor. Its validity is proved by theoretical results and experimental results.

Abstract:A new type of electronic ballast circuit was proposed to solve the problem of acoustic resonance which may occur in the electronic ballast for high-intensity discharge (HID) lamps. Output signals of the pulse width modulation (PWM) control circuit becomed high frequency ones with variable pulse width and variable frequency by modulating the clock signal of the on-chip oscillator with a low-frequency signal. Driven by these high-frequency signals, acoustic resonance of a HID lamp was suppressed, and the HID lamp ran steadily. The structure of the proposed circuit was simple, dimensions were reduced and operating reliability was improved. The presented idea here made it easy to develop specific integrated circuits for HID lamps operating steadily, imposing a positive effect on the development and application of HID lamps.

Abstract:This paper presents an electronic ballast for Metal Halide Lamps(MHL) based on ARM Microcontroller(LPC2114).In which the piece-wise linearization strategy was used to match the load characteristics of Metal Halide Lamps.The control flow of the electronic ballast based on ARM is proposed.The design method of the discrete compensating network of the constant current and constant power control is also presented.The experimental results showed this electronic ballast′s constant power precision can reach 0.4%.It also has the functions of error protection,communication and dimming.

Abstract:This paper presents a MHz electronic ballast, which avoids the intrinsic problem of acoustic resonance of HID lamps. A novel three order LPF is adopted, which decreases lamp current crest factor and increases the lamp life. The circuit runs with the soft switch mode, which achieves better performance of EMC and higher efficiency on MHz frequency operation. Its validity is proved by both theoretical analysis and experimental results.

Abstract:Metal halide lamps (MHLs) have serious acoustic resonance problem. The most widely used method to achieve acoustic-resonance free is to use low-frequency square wave (LFSW) electronic ballasts. There are two ignition methods commonly used in LFSW electronic ballast: high-frequency resonance ignition and additional pulse igniter. This paper analyzed the problems during ignition while using the conventional additional pulse igniter and proposed some solutions. A novel high-frequency resonance igniter is also proposed, where no extra semiconductors and feedback control circuit are needed to perform the ignition. High-voltage ignition pulses are obtained by utilizing the fast polarity inversion of the output voltage of full-bridge inverter. Theoretical analysis, simulatio, and experiment results of a prototype for 70-W MHLs verified the effectiveness of both the proposed solutions and the igniter.

Abstract:This paper presents a two-stage acoustic resonance free electronic ballast for MHD lamps using peak-current control mode. The ballast is consisted of a PFC stage and a full bridge inverter to supply lamp with low-frequency square-wave current, which achieves acoustic resonance free operation. And due to the adoption of peak-current control mode, the current overshoot which is common during output current is well controlled. The proposed circuit was verified by simulation and experimental results.

Abstract:This paper introduces a novel ballast for Metal Halide Lamp (MHL) which is controlled by digital control strategy.It consists of power factor correction circuit ,Buck converter and inverter. Constant current and constant power strategies are used in ballast based on C504 .The transfer functions and design steps of system are demonstrated ,and PI regulator is used for its good dynamic and static performance .This control algorithm is realized by look-up table for its high efficiency. The experimental result demonstrates the prototype has good dynamic and static performance,higher efficiency(92%),higher power factor(0.997),and low THD(5.6%)

Abstract:This paper presents a novel control strategy for a two-stage acoustic resonance free electronic ballast for high intensity discharge (HID) lamp. The ballast consists of a PFC stage, a low frequency half-bridge inverter with buck capability, and an igniter. A new control method proposed to control the half bridge inverter to supplies the lamp with low square wave current. A novel and simple method is proposed to conquer overshoot problem during output current inverting instant. The proposed control method was verified with experimental results.

Abstract:This paper presents the analysis and design of an electronic ballast with very high frequency and dimming by frequency modulation.The ballast,which can avoid intrinsic acoustic resonance problem of HID lamps,consists of a PFC converter and an inverter.Based on a T type filter,wide dimming can be achieved within a narrow frequency variation range.At the same time the lamp current is keeps a perfect sine wave,which means low lamp current crest factor is achieved.Frequency modulation with power control is implemented.Bi-frequency is used to dim the lamp,the output power can be controlled by adjusting the ratio of the time intervals of the two switches frequencies,and the EMI of the ballast is reduced.

Abstract:This paper presents a low-cost low-frequency square-wave digital electronic ballast for metal halide(MH) lamp.A highly efficient and reliable topology-dual Buck half-bridge inverter (DBI) are adopted to supply the lamp with low-frequency square-wave positive and negative current to avoid acoustic resonance.The constant bus voltage is provided by the front end PFC stage.Power control is realized by controlling the turn-on time of Buck switching device during transient and steady states,a control strategy for transient process is discussed.The AVR special microcontroller for lighting applications is used to promote control performance.A prototype of 70 W digital HID ballast is built with the whole efficiency of 92%.The proposed circuit is verified with experimental results.

Abstract:In the field of high-power lighting, High Intensity Discharge (HID), with the representative of HPSL (high pressure sodium lamp) and metal halide, remains a main choice. Inverter circuit plays an important role in the design of high-power electronic ballast. A novel topology of LCLC resonant inverter circuit was proposed in order to solve the issue of efficiency lifting. By setting the switching frequency and parameters, the goal of ZCS could be achieved approximately, while under the condition of ZVS. The experimental results and ways of passive parameters design were presented finally.

Abstract:Digital electronic ballast employing 8-bit microprocessor for HID lamps is proposed in this paper.The circuit implemented a digital method to keep the lamp power constant and offer a capability dimming the lamp from 100% to about 50%.Control flowchart and experimental results are given in this paper.Based on experimental data from the laboratory prototype,some key characteristics of technical index are analyzed.
