Abstract:A transition-metal-free, sulfur mediated propargylic C-H alkylation reaction was realized through a one-pot procedure. The reaction design involves an initial addition between alkynes and triflic anhydride activated sulfoxides, and a subsequent [2,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement of the allenyl sulfur ylides generated under basic conditions to give propargylic C-H alkylation products.

Abstract:Transition-metal-free, sulfur-mediated allylic C–H arylation, epoxidation, and aziridination were realized through one-pot procedures. The reaction design involved initial addition between olefins and triflic anhydride activated sulfoxides, followed by subsequent reactions of the allylic sulfur ylides generated under basic conditions with arylboronic acids, aldehydes, or aldimines, to give allylic arylation, epoxidation, or aziridination products, respectively.

Abstract:An efficient iron‐catalyzed allylation of cycloalkyl hydroperoxides with allylic sulfones via C−C bond cleavage is presented. This protocol provides an efficient approach to a wide range of distally allylated ketones with good functional group tolerance and high regioselectivity under redox‐neutral conditions. Preliminary mechanistic study implies a radical process might be involved in this reaction.

Abstract:Cationic rearrangement reactions usually follow Markovnikov's rule to give more substituted carbocations as stable intermediates. Abstract:Abstract This Account discusses several new reaction methods developed in our group that utilize sulfur-mediated reactions through sulfonium salts and ylides, highlighting the interplay of rational design and serendipity. Our initial goal was to convert aliphatic C–H bonds into C–C bonds site-selectively, and without the use of transition-metal catalysts. While a proof-of-concept has been achieved, this target is far from being ideally realized. Abstract:A dehydrative cross-coupling of unactivated allylic alcohols with sulfinic acids was achieved under catalyst-free conditions. This reaction proceeded via allyl sulfination and concomitant allyl sulfinate-sulfone rearrangement. Various allylic sulfones could be obtained in good to excellent yields with water as the only byproduct. This study expands the synthetic toolbox for constructing allylic sulfone molecules.

Abstract:A copper-catalyzed direct C(sp(2))-H alkylsulfonylation of alkenes using alkylsilyl peroxides and DABCO center dot(SO2)(2) was developed, and shown to provide a convenient route to diverse (E)-alkylsulfonyl alkenes. During this transformation, alkylsilyl peroxides were used as the alkyl radical precursors with the insertion of sulfur dioxide. This methodology showed good reaction efficiency, excellent functional group tolerance and stereoselectivity.
