Abstract:Novel C-C bond cleavage of secondary alcohols through Rh(III)-catalyzed beta-carbon elimination directed by a pyridinyl group is reported. A five-membered rhodacycle is proposed as a key intermediate, which undergoes further alkenylation with various olefins. This novel transformation shows high efficiency along with excellent selectivity in mild conditions. A wide range of functionalities are compatible. This study offers a new strategy to carry out C-C bond activation.

Abstract:A Cp*Rh-III-catalyzed annulative carbooxygenation of challenging 1,1-disubstituted alkenes triggered by C-H activation of N-aryloxyacetamides has been established, which affords 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran derivatives with a quaternary carbon center in good to excellent yields under mild redox-neutral conditions. An amide group on the alkenes is essential for the process, and may inhibit the beta-H elimination from C(sp3)-Rh species by saturating the rhodium center through coordination. Furthermore, mechanistic insights obtained from control experiments suggest a mechanism involving a Rh-III-Rh-V-Rh-III catalytic cycle.

Abstract:Co(III)-catalyzed highly regio- and stereoselective direct C6 olefination of 2-pyridones with alkynes has been developed with the assistance of chelation. Upon variation of the reaction conditions, 2-pyridones react well with diaryl alkynes via a C6 olefination/directing group migration pathway to give the tetrasubstituted 6-vinyl-2-pyridones, but the C6–H olefination with terminal alkynes works effectively to afford only the C6-olefinated 2-pyridones. A judicious choice of a solvent and an additive is crucial for catalysis. The protocols feature 100% atom economy, excellent site selectivity, high stereoselectivity, an ample substrate scope, and good compatibility of functional groups. Abstract:Rh(III)-catalyzed meta-C-H functionalization reactions are still rare. Herein, we report the first example of Rh(III)-catalyzed meta-C-H alkenylation with disubstituted alkynes directed by a U-shaped nitrile template. Exclusive regio-selectivity has been achieved using unsymmetrical aryl and alkyl-disubstituted alkynes to afford synthetically valuable trisubstituted olefins. Propargyl alcohols are also compatible, affording complex allylic alcohols. Notably, transition metal-catalyzed meta-alkenylation with alkynes has not been successful with Pd catalysts.

Abstract:We report three transformations: 1) direct transformation from biarylmethanols into biarylmethylamines; 2) direct transformation from one biarylmethanol into another biarylmethanol; 3) direct transformation from allylic alcohols into allylic amines. These transformations are based on pyridyl-directed Rh-catalyzed C?C bond cleavage of secondary alcohols and subsequent addition to C?X (X=N or O) double bonds. The reaction conditions are simple and no additive is required. The driving force of C?C bond cleavage is the formation of the stable rhodacycle intermediate. Other directing groups, such as the pyrazolyl group, can also be used although it is not as efficient as the pyridyl group. We carried out in-depth investigations for transformation 1 and found that: 1) the substrate scope was broad and electron-rich alcohols and electron-deficient imines are more efficient; 2) as the leaving group, aldehyde had no significant impact on either the C?C bond cleavage or the whole transformation; 3) mechanistic studies (intermediate isolation, in situ NMR spectroscopic studies, competing reactions, isotopic labeling experiments) implied that: i) The C?C cleavage was very efficient under these conditions; ii) there is an equilibrium between the rhodacycle intermediate and the protonated byproduct phenylpyridine; iii) the addition step of the rhodacycle intermediate to imines was slower than the C?C cleavage and the equilibrium between the rhodacycle and phenylpyridine; iv) the whole transformation was a combination of two sequences of C?C cleavage/nucleophilic addition and C?C cleavage/protonation/C?H activation/nucleophilic addition, with the latter being perhaps the main pathway. We also demonstrated the first example of cleavage of an C(alkenyl)?C(benzyl) bond. These transformations showed the exchange (or substitution) of the alcohol group with either an amine or another alcohol group. Like the group transplant, this method offers a new concept that can be used to directly synthesize the desired products from other chemicals through reorganization of carbon skeletons.

Abstract:Cp*Rh(III)‐catalyzed regioselective C−H annulation and alkenylation of 2‐pyridones with terminal alkynes have been developed. The cationic Cp*Rh(III) catalytic system containing FeCl3 additive enables annulation of 1‐(2‐pyridyl)‐2‐pyridones with terminal alkynes, providing efficient access to 5,7‐diarylated 2‐quinolinones. The reaction pathway can be switched to alkenylation with [Cp*RhCl2]2 as the catalyst, NaOAc as the additive and HOAc as the solvent, affording C6‐alkenylated 1‐(2‐pyridyl)‐2‐pyridones in high yields. These protocols accommodate a wide range of substrates with good functional group compatibility.
