Abstract:Efficient Rh(III)-catalyzed C-H activation of different classes of (hetero)-arenes such as 2-phenylpyridine, indoles, aryl ketones and acetanilide and their dehydrogenative cross-coupling with allylic alcohols are described. Several important skeletons such as beta-aryl aldehydes and ketones, 2-acetylindenes, 3,4-dihydro-1H-quinolin-2-one and quinoline could be produced using this protocol.

Abstract:Rh-catalyzed selective C-H functionalization of indoles with two routes was developed: an alkenylation-annulation with the addition of KHSO4 and alkenylation-elimination in the presence of CsOAc to the corresponding products, respectively. Abstract:A Cp*Rh-III-catalyzed annulative carbooxygenation of challenging 1,1-disubstituted alkenes triggered by C-H activation of N-aryloxyacetamides has been established, which affords 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran derivatives with a quaternary carbon center in good to excellent yields under mild redox-neutral conditions. An amide group on the alkenes is essential for the process, and may inhibit the beta-H elimination from C(sp3)-Rh species by saturating the rhodium center through coordination. Furthermore, mechanistic insights obtained from control experiments suggest a mechanism involving a Rh-III-Rh-V-Rh-III catalytic cycle.

Abstract:A Rh(I)‐catalyzed chelation‐assisted C2‐selective C−H decarbonylative alkylation of indoles with readily available, cheap, safe and structurally diverse alkyl carboxylic acids or anhydrides has been developed. A wide variety of primary and secondary alkyl carboxylic acids and differently substituted indoles are compatible with this transformation, allowing facile synthesis of various C2‐alkylated indoles with high efficiency and broad tolerance of diverse functional groups. The reaction proceeds in the absence of any external oxidant, and the presence of readily installable and removable N‐pyrimidyl directing group is critical for catalysis. The process is convenient and scalable, and avoids the use of a dried solvent and an inert atmosphere. Moreover, selective C7‐alkylation and C2, C7‐dialkylation have also been achieved by slightly modifying the reaction conditions.

Abstract:A novel method for the regio- and stereoselective synthesis of substituted 3-coumaranones from salicylaldehydes and allenes using a rhodium(III) catalyst has been developed. This procedure gives access to new 2-vinyl-substituted 3-coumaranone compounds. The method involves a Rh(III)-catalyzed aldehyde C-H activation and annulation reactions. Moreover, this Rh(III)-catalyzed [4 + 1] annulation reaction has been applied to 2-aminobenzaldehydes to afford 2,2-disubstituted 3-indolinones.

Abstract:A rhodium-catalyzed tandem arylation/cyclization reaction of 3-(ortho-boronated aryl) conjugated enones with unactivated alkynes is reported. By using a rhodium(I)/chiral-diene complex as the catalyst, the protocol was processed smoothly to provide various 2,3-disubstituted indene compounds in high yields with excellent regioselectivities and enantioselectivities. The approach outlined herein is appealing, as simple diarylalkynes, diakylalkynes, and alkyl(aryl)alkynes are the starting materials.

Abstract:A rhodium-catalyzed C-H functionalization-based intermolecular allylation of indoles with trisubstituted allenes has been developed. This synthetic process proceeds with an excellent regioselectivity, Z-selectivity, high efficiency of chirality transfer, and a wide tolerance of reactive functional groups under mild conditions. Late-stage modification on a series of complex bioactive or drug molecules and various synthetic transformations has been demonstrated. A reaction mechanism has been proposed on the basis of mechanistic experiments and SAESI-MS studies.

Abstract:Rhodium-catalyzed C7-selective decarbonylative arylation, olefination, and methylation of indoles with carboxylic acids or anhydrides by C-H and C-C bond activation have been developed. Furthermore, C7-acylation products can also be generated selectively at a lower reaction temperature in the developed system. The key to the high reactivity and regioselectivity of this transformation is the appropriate choice of an indole N-PtBu2 chelation-assisted group. This method has many advantages, including easy access and removal of the directing group, the use of cheap and widely available coupling agents, no requirement of an external ligand or oxidant, a broad substrate scope, high efficiency, and the formation of a sole regioisomer.

Abstract:Herein, Rh(III)-catalyzed and weak carbonyl coordination-directed C4-selective C-H allylation and prenylation of indoles have been reported in the first time. By employing 5-methylene-1,3-dioxan-2-ones, 4 vinyl-1,3-dioxolan-2-ones and 2-methyl-2,3-butadiene as novel and scalable cross-coupling partners, respectively, these divergent synthesis protocols proceed smoothly under redox-neutral reaction conditions, delivering various allylated and prenylated indoles with excellent C4-position regioselectivity in moderate to excellent yields. This transformation exhibits high functional-groups compatibility and broad substrate scope. Gram-scale experiment and mechanistic studies were also accomplished.
