Abstract:A Cp*Rh-III-catalyzed annulative carbooxygenation of challenging 1,1-disubstituted alkenes triggered by C-H activation of N-aryloxyacetamides has been established, which affords 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran derivatives with a quaternary carbon center in good to excellent yields under mild redox-neutral conditions. An amide group on the alkenes is essential for the process, and may inhibit the beta-H elimination from C(sp3)-Rh species by saturating the rhodium center through coordination. Furthermore, mechanistic insights obtained from control experiments suggest a mechanism involving a Rh-III-Rh-V-Rh-III catalytic cycle.

Abstract:The selective rhodium-catalyzed functionalization of arenes is greatly facilitated by oxidizing directing groups that act both as directing groups and internal oxidants. We report density functional theory (B3LYP and M06) investigations on the mechanism of rhodium(III)-catalyzed redox coupling reaction of N-phenoxyacetamides with alkynes. The results elucidated the role of the internal oxidizing directing group, and the role of Rh(III)/Rh(I) and Rh(III)/Rh(V) catalysis of C-H functionalizations. A novel Rh(III)-Rh(V)-Rh(III) cycle successfully rationalizes recent experimental observations by Liu and Lu et al. ( Liu , G. Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2013 , 52 , 6033 ) on the reactions of N-phenoxyacetamides with alkynes in different solvents. Natural Bond Orbital (NBO) analysis confirms the identity of Rh(V) intermediate in the catalytic cycle.

Abstract:Abstract A Rh-catalyzed electrochemical vinylic C–H annulation of acrylamides with alkynes has been developed in an undivided cell, affording cyclic products in good to excellent yield. Divergent syntheses of α-pyridones and cyclic imidates are accomplished by employing N-phenyl acrylamides and N-tosyl acrylamides as substrates, respectively. Additionally, excellent regioselectivities are achieved when using unsymmetrical alkynes. This electrochemical process is environmentally benign compared to traditional transition metal-catalyzed C–H annulations because it avoids the use of stoichiometric metal oxidants. DFT calculations elucidated the reaction mechanism and origins of substituent-controlled chemoselectivity. The sequential C–H activation and alkyne insertion under rhodium catalysis leads to the seven-membered ring vinyl-rhodium intermediate. This intermediate undergoes either the classic neutral concerted reductive elimination to produce α-pyridones, or the ionic stepwise pathway to produce cyclic imidates.

Abstract:The combination of achiral Cp*Rh(III) with chiral carboxylic acids (CCAs) represents an efficient catalytic system in transition metal-catalyzed enantioselective C–H activation. However, this hybrid catalysis is limited to redox-neutral C-H activation reactions and the adopt to oxidative enantioselective C–H activation remains elusive and pose a significant challenge. Herein, we describe the development of an electrochemical Cp*Rh(III)-catalyzed enantioselective C‒H annulation of sulfoximines with alkynes enabled by chiral carboxylic acid (CCA) in an operationally friendly undivided cell at room temperature. A broad range of enantioenriched 1,2-benzothiazines were obtained in high yields with excellent enantioselectivities (up to 99% yield and 98:2 er). The practicality of this method was demonstrated by scale-up reaction in a batch reactor with external circulation. A crucial chiral Cp*Rh(III) intermediate was isolated, characterized, and transformed, providing rational support for a Rh(III)/Rh(I) electrocatalytic cycle.

Abstract:Efficient Rh(III)-catalyzed C-H activation of different classes of (hetero)-arenes such as 2-phenylpyridine, indoles, aryl ketones and acetanilide and their dehydrogenative cross-coupling with allylic alcohols are described. Several important skeletons such as beta-aryl aldehydes and ketones, 2-acetylindenes, 3,4-dihydro-1H-quinolin-2-one and quinoline could be produced using this protocol.

Abstract:Rh(III)-catalyzed C-H activation assisted by an oxidizing directing group has evolved to a mild and redox-economic strategy for the construction of heterocycles. Despite the success, these coupling systems are currently limited to cleavage of an oxidizing N-O or N-N bond. Cleavage of an oxidizing C-N bond, which allows for complementary carbocycle synthesis, is unprecedented. In this article, α-ammonium acetophenones with an oxidizing C-N bond have been designed as substrates for Rh(III)-catalyzed C-H activation under redox-neutral conditions. The coupling with α-diazo esters afforded benzocyclopentanones, and the coupling with unactivated alkenes such as styrenes and aliphatic olefins gave ortho-olefinated acetophenoes. In both systems the reactions proceeded with a broad scope, high efficiency, and functional group tolerance. Moreover, efficient one-pot coupling of diazo esters has been realized starting from α-bromoacetophenones and triethylamine. The reaction mechanism for the coupling with diazo esters has been studied by a combination of experimental and theoretical methods. In particular, three distinct mechanistic pathways have been scrutinized by DFT studies, which revealed that the C-H activation occurs via a C-bound enolate-assisted concerted metalation-deprotonation mechanism and is rate-limiting. In subsequent C-C formation steps, the lowest energy pathway involves two rhodium carbene species as key intermediates.

Abstract:An oxyacetamide-directed Rh(III)-catalyzed Z-type alkenyl C–H functionalization through a rare exo-rhodacyle intermediate is described, forming multisubstituted dienes and allenes. A variety of alkenes and propargylic carbonate coupling partners are suitable for this transformation with high regio- and stereoselectivity. Abstract:A Rh(III)-catalyzed enaminone-directed alkenyl C-H coupling with alkynes for the synthesis of salicylaldehyde derivatives is reported. This represents a unique example of benzene ring framework formation through a transition-metal-catalyzed, directed C-H activation strategy. The two incorporated reactive functionalities, aldehyde and hydroxy groups, provide convenient synthetic handles for further structural elaboration.
