Abstract:A Cp*Rh-III-catalyzed annulative carbooxygenation of challenging 1,1-disubstituted alkenes triggered by C-H activation of N-aryloxyacetamides has been established, which affords 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran derivatives with a quaternary carbon center in good to excellent yields under mild redox-neutral conditions. An amide group on the alkenes is essential for the process, and may inhibit the beta-H elimination from C(sp3)-Rh species by saturating the rhodium center through coordination. Furthermore, mechanistic insights obtained from control experiments suggest a mechanism involving a Rh-III-Rh-V-Rh-III catalytic cycle.

Abstract:Rh(III)-catalyzed ortho C-H activation/olefination of phenol carbamates has been developed. High regioselectivity is observed with a range of phenol carbamates enabling efficient coupling with acrylates and styrenes. This reaction exhibits different reactivity as compared to the Pd-catalyzed ortho-arylation reaction of phenol esters and provides a new approach for the synthesis of ortho-substituted phenols.

Abstract:We report herein a Rh(III)-catalyzed alkenyl CH activation protocol for the coupling of oxadiazoles with alkynes and synthesis of 2-acylamino and 2-amino pyridines, an important heterocyclic scaffold for various naturals products and synthetic pharmaceuticals bearing a readily reacting functional group. The selective protection/deprotection of amino groups through simple solvent switching, good functional group compatibility, superior product yield, and high regioselectivity are some of the notable synthetic features witnessed in this reaction protocol.

Abstract:Rh(III)-catalyzed C-H activation assisted by an oxidizing directing group has evolved to a mild and redox-economic strategy for the construction of heterocycles. Despite the success, these coupling systems are currently limited to cleavage of an oxidizing N-O or N-N bond. Cleavage of an oxidizing C-N bond, which allows for complementary carbocycle synthesis, is unprecedented. In this article, α-ammonium acetophenones with an oxidizing C-N bond have been designed as substrates for Rh(III)-catalyzed C-H activation under redox-neutral conditions. The coupling with α-diazo esters afforded benzocyclopentanones, and the coupling with unactivated alkenes such as styrenes and aliphatic olefins gave ortho-olefinated acetophenoes. In both systems the reactions proceeded with a broad scope, high efficiency, and functional group tolerance. Moreover, efficient one-pot coupling of diazo esters has been realized starting from α-bromoacetophenones and triethylamine. The reaction mechanism for the coupling with diazo esters has been studied by a combination of experimental and theoretical methods. In particular, three distinct mechanistic pathways have been scrutinized by DFT studies, which revealed that the C-H activation occurs via a C-bound enolate-assisted concerted metalation-deprotonation mechanism and is rate-limiting. In subsequent C-C formation steps, the lowest energy pathway involves two rhodium carbene species as key intermediates.

Abstract:A Rh(iii)-catalyzed C-H alkynylation of substituted N-phenoxyacetamides has been developed with the aid of hypervalent iodine-alkyne reagents. Complementary to the Sonogashira coupling reaction, this protocol provides an efficient and straightforward method to access aryl alkynes at room temperature. The multifunctional directing group is preserved which can be further employed for ortho-directed functionalizations to obtain additional new complex products.

Abstract:In this paper, rhodium‐catalyzed sequential twofold ortho ‐C‐H functionalization of N ‐phenylbenzimidamide with internal alkyne is studied. The double C‐H activations proved viable in a one‐pot fashion with the assistance of C=N and C‐N, providing a serial of benzimidazoisoquinolines with high levels of positional selectivity control. The operationally simple transformation showed high functional group compatibility and featured with cleavage of the C‐H bonds located on different moiety of the N ‐phenylbenzimidamide substrates. Detailed mechanistic studies provided strong support for C−H bond cleavage on N ‐phenyl ring is preferential than C‐H bond on C‐phenyl ring. As a multifunctional catalytic platform, the rhodium catalyst conducted two independent and compatible catalytic cycles in one pot.

Abstract:Abstract A Rh-catalyzed electrochemical vinylic C–H annulation of acrylamides with alkynes has been developed in an undivided cell, affording cyclic products in good to excellent yield. Divergent syntheses of α-pyridones and cyclic imidates are accomplished by employing N-phenyl acrylamides and N-tosyl acrylamides as substrates, respectively. Additionally, excellent regioselectivities are achieved when using unsymmetrical alkynes. This electrochemical process is environmentally benign compared to traditional transition metal-catalyzed C–H annulations because it avoids the use of stoichiometric metal oxidants. DFT calculations elucidated the reaction mechanism and origins of substituent-controlled chemoselectivity. The sequential C–H activation and alkyne insertion under rhodium catalysis leads to the seven-membered ring vinyl-rhodium intermediate. This intermediate undergoes either the classic neutral concerted reductive elimination to produce α-pyridones, or the ionic stepwise pathway to produce cyclic imidates.

Abstract:<p>An efficient and convenient rhodium(III)-catalyzed chelation-assisted <em>ortho</em>-selective carbon−hydrogen bond alkylation of phenols treated with readily available diazocarbonyl compounds as the alkyl source has been described. Migratory carbene insertion represents the principal step to realize this carbenoid coupling transformation, giving rise to a broad rang of alkylated products and at the same time, releasing nitrogen gas as sole byproduct. This protocol offers exclusive regioselectivities, moderate to excellent chemical yields, and good functional group tolerance.</p>

Abstract:Described herein is an efficient new method for ortho-olefination of anilides in the presence of AgSbF6 and NaOAc via rhodium(III)-catalyzed internal oxidative C–H bond activation based on hydroxyl as directing and oxidative group.
