Abstract:Rh-III-catalyzed C-H activation with allenes produces highly unsaturated conjugated olefins. The reaction is applicable to both olefin and arene C(sp(2))-H and is compatible with a variety of functional groups. Abstract:A Cp*Rh-III-catalyzed annulative carbooxygenation of challenging 1,1-disubstituted alkenes triggered by C-H activation of N-aryloxyacetamides has been established, which affords 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran derivatives with a quaternary carbon center in good to excellent yields under mild redox-neutral conditions. An amide group on the alkenes is essential for the process, and may inhibit the beta-H elimination from C(sp3)-Rh species by saturating the rhodium center through coordination. Furthermore, mechanistic insights obtained from control experiments suggest a mechanism involving a Rh-III-Rh-V-Rh-III catalytic cycle.

Abstract:Under the catalysis of a rhodium(III) complex, the cyclization of 2,3-allenols was most probably initiated with the C-H bond functionalization of N-methoxybenzamides using the tetramethylcyclopentadiene anion (C5Me4-) as ligand, affording differently substituted 2,5-dihydrofuran derivatives. Highly efficient axial-to-central chirality transfer has been observed.

Abstract:An oxyacetamide-directed Rh(III)-catalyzed Z-type alkenyl C–H functionalization through a rare exo-rhodacyle intermediate is described, forming multisubstituted dienes and allenes. A variety of alkenes and propargylic carbonate coupling partners are suitable for this transformation with high regio- and stereoselectivity. Abstract:Allenes are important 2π building blocks in organic synthesis and engage as 2-carbon components in many metal-catalyzed reactions. Wender and co-workers discovered that methyl substituents on the terminal allene double bond counterintuitively change the reactivities of allenes in [Rh(CO)2Cl]2-catalyzed intermolecular (5 + 2) cycloadditions with vinylcyclopropanes (VCPs). More sterically encumbered allenes afford higher cycloadduct yields, and such effects are also observed in other Rh(I)-catalyzed intermolecular cycloadditions. Through density functional theory calculations (B3LYP and M06) and experiment, we explored this enigmatic reactivity and selectivity of allenes in [Rh(CO)2Cl]2-catalyzed intermolecular (5 + 2) cycloadditions with VCPs. The apparent low reactivity of terminally unsubstituted allenes is associated with a competing allene dimerization that irreversibly sequesters rhodium. With terminally substituted allenes, steric repulsion between the terminal substituents significantly increases the barrier of allene dimerization while the barrier of the (5 + 2) cycloaddition is not affected, and thus the cycloaddition prevails. Computation has also revealed the origin of chemoselectivity in (5 + 2) cycloadditions with allene-ynes. Although simple allene and acetylene have similar reaction barriers, intermolecular (5 + 2) cycloadditions of allene-ynes occur exclusively at the terminal allene double bond. The terminal double bond is more reactive due to the enhanced d-π* backdonation. At the same time, insertion of the internal double bond of an allene-yne has a higher barrier as it would break π conjugation. Substituted alkynes are more difficult to insert compared with acetylene, because of the steric repulsion from the additional substituents. This leads to the greater reactivity of the allene double bond relative to the alkynyl group in allene-ynes.

Abstract:A Rh(III)-catalyzed enaminone-directed alkenyl C-H coupling with alkynes for the synthesis of salicylaldehyde derivatives is reported. This represents a unique example of benzene ring framework formation through a transition-metal-catalyzed, directed C-H activation strategy. The two incorporated reactive functionalities, aldehyde and hydroxy groups, provide convenient synthetic handles for further structural elaboration.

Abstract:A novel method for the regio- and stereoselective synthesis of substituted 3-coumaranones from salicylaldehydes and allenes using a rhodium(III) catalyst has been developed. This procedure gives access to new 2-vinyl-substituted 3-coumaranone compounds. The method involves a Rh(III)-catalyzed aldehyde C-H activation and annulation reactions. Moreover, this Rh(III)-catalyzed [4 + 1] annulation reaction has been applied to 2-aminobenzaldehydes to afford 2,2-disubstituted 3-indolinones.

Abstract:A new Cp*Rh(III)-catalyzed regioselective cyclization reaction of aromatic amides with allenes is reported. The use of allenyl derivatives bearing a directing-group assistant as a reaction promoter was the key to the success of this protocol. Additionally, two different Rh-σ-alkenyl and Rh-π-allyl intermediates were discovered in this catalytic system. These reactions were characterized by mild reaction conditions, broad substrate scope, and high functional group compatibility to yield several high-value isoquinolinone and pyrimido[1,6-a]indol-1(2H)-one skeleton–containing compounds. The synthetic applications and primary mechanisms were also investigated.

Abstract:With the help of DFT calculations, the reaction mechanisms of the rhodium(III)-catalyzed C-H activation/annulation between aromatic amide and α-allenol leading to the formation of isoindolinone have been theoretically investigated. Our calculated results show that the catalytic cycle consists of four stages: N-H deprotonation and C-H activation (Stage I), allene insertion, rearrangement and isomerization (Stage II), β-H elimination and enol-keto tautomerism (Stage III), and catalyst regeneration resulting in the five-membered ring product (Stage IV). For stage IV, besides the reaction paths proposed by the experimentalists, i.e., the insertion and reductive elimination (labeled as path a) and the reductive elimination and hydroamination (labeled as path b), an alternative path which involves C-N and C-H reductive eliminations (labeled as path c) was proposed and examined. The computational results show that the newly established path c is more energetically favorable than the reaction paths proposed by the experimentalists (paths a and b). The allene (non-terminal double bond) insertion step contributes to the rate-determining step with an overall activation free energy of 24.6 kcal/mol. Our study is beneficial for a better comprehension of the reaction mechanisms and provides a significant suggestion for further development of similar reactions.

Abstract:Efficient Rh(III)-catalyzed C-H activation of different classes of (hetero)-arenes such as 2-phenylpyridine, indoles, aryl ketones and acetanilide and their dehydrogenative cross-coupling with allylic alcohols are described.
