Abstract:A Rh-catalysed [5 + 1] cycloaddition of allenylcyclopropanes and CO has been developed to synthesize functionalized 2-methylidene-3,4-cyclohexenones. The scope of this methodology has been investigated, showing that various functional groups can be tolerated. Both di- and tri-substituted allenylcyclopropanes can be applied to this cycloaddition and the [5 + 1] cycloadducts with the E configuration were obtained as the major products. In addition, the present [5 + 1] cycloaddition reaction has been utilized as a key step in the formal synthesis of the natural product (-)-galanthamine.

Abstract:A new Cp*Rh(III)-catalyzed regioselective cyclization reaction of aromatic amides with allenes is reported. The use of allenyl derivatives bearing a directing-group assistant as a reaction promoter was the key to the success of this protocol. Additionally, two different Rh-σ-alkenyl and Rh-π-allyl intermediates were discovered in this catalytic system. These reactions were characterized by mild reaction conditions, broad substrate scope, and high functional group compatibility to yield several high-value isoquinolinone and pyrimido[1,6-a]indol-1(2H)-one skeleton–containing compounds. The synthetic applications and primary mechanisms were also investigated.

Abstract:A novel method for the regio- and stereoselective synthesis of substituted 3-coumaranones from salicylaldehydes and allenes using a rhodium(III) catalyst has been developed. This procedure gives access to new 2-vinyl-substituted 3-coumaranone compounds. The method involves a Rh(III)-catalyzed aldehyde C-H activation and annulation reactions. Moreover, this Rh(III)-catalyzed [4 + 1] annulation reaction has been applied to 2-aminobenzaldehydes to afford 2,2-disubstituted 3-indolinones.

Abstract:Herein we report a [Cp*RhCl2]2-catalyzed coupling cyclization of two different classes of allenes with 2,3-allenoic acids affording 2(5H)-furanone skeletons of products and 2,3-allenols forming a conjugated (E)-enal or enone functionality to the β-position of the 2(5H)-furanones. These products are important building blocks for the syntheses of potentially bioactive compounds. The reaction proceeded via the nucleometalation, insertion, and stereodefined 1,4-H delivery carried by rhodium.

Abstract:A diastereoselective [4 + 2] cycloisomerization of asymmetric allenyl dienes is reported. The asymmetric dienyl allenes are synthesized using the method reported by Ma. These substrates readily undergo diastereoselective intramolecular rhodium catalyzed [4 + 2] cycloisomerization analogous to thermal intramolecular Diels–Alder reactions. Overall, 29 examples are presented with tethers possessing nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon.
