Abstract:Recently we reported the first conjugated diene. assisted, rhodium-catalyzed allylic C-H bond activation and addition to alkenes to synthesize multifunctional tetrahydropyrroles, tetrahydrofurans, and cyclopentanes from ene-2-diene substrates, with good to excellent diastereoselectivities. Here we report a DFT study of the mechanism of this reaction, aiming to obtain a detailed potential energy surface, to understand factors determining its stereochemistry, and to determine why conjugated diene is very critical for the success of this reaction. DFT calculations unveiled that the catalytic cycle of this reaction involves a sequence of substrate catalyst complex formation, allylic C-H activation, alkene insertion into the Rh-H bond, and di-pi-allyl-assisted C(sp(3))-Rh-C(sp(3)) reductive elimination, among which the C-H activation and alkene insertion steps are reversible. The main reason for the formation of the cis-divinyl product is that the irreversible reductive elimination transition state from the bis-allylic Rh complex favors a cis 5/5 bicyclic conformation to reduce the ring strain. Moreover, formation of the cis-divinyl product is also assisted by the alkene coordination to the Rh center in the reductive elimination transition state. DFT insights revealed that the conjugated diene, which is very critical for the target reaction, disfavors the double-bond isomerization and facilitates the reductive elimination for the bis-allylic Rh complex, causing the C-H activation and alkene insertion to occur. The computational results showed that the bridgehead double-bond distortion, as suggested by the Bredt's rule, is responsible for not generating the type II [4+2] cycloadducts from ene-2-dienes.

Abstract:Because of the inherent difficulty in differentiating two olefins, the development of metal-catalyzed asymmetric cyclization of 1,6-dienes remains challenging. Herein, we describe the first rhodium(III)-catalyzed asymmetric borylative cyclization of cyclohexadienone-tethered mono-, 1,1di-, and (E)-1,2-disubstituted alkenes (1,6-dienes), affording optically pure cis-bicyclic skeletons bearing three or four contiguous stereocenters with high yields (25-93%), and excellent diastereoselectivities (>20:1 dr) and enantioselectivities (90-99% ee). This mild catalytic approach is generally compatible with a wide range of functional groups, which allows several facile conversions of the cyclization products. Furthermore, on the basis of our SAESI-MS experiment and computational study, a Rh(I)/(III) catalytic cycle is proposed in this tandem reaction, and the Rh(I) active species catalyzes the overall transformation via sequential oxidative addition of B(2)pin(2), olefin insertion, cyclizing conjugate addition, and reductive elimination. The irreversible conjugate addition determines the overall regioselectivity of borylative cyclization, and the ring strain favors the formation of 5,6-bicyclic structure. This highlights the control of ring strain in diene cyclizations, which provides a useful basis for future reaction designs.

Abstract:The 1,1′-bi-2-naphthol–ZnEt2–Ti(OiPr)4–Cy2NH system is found to catalyze the 1,3-enyne addition to aliphatic aldehydes as well as other aldehydes at room temperature with 75–96% yield and 82–97% ee. This system is also broadly applicable for the highly enantioselective reaction of other alkyl-, aryl-, and silylalkynes with structurally diverse aldehydes. The propargylic alcohols prepared from the catalytic asymmetric enyne addition to aliphatic aldehydes are used to prepare a series of optically active trienynes. In the presence of a catalytic amount of [RhCl(CO)2]2 and 1 atm of CO, the optically active trienynes undergo highly stereoselective domino Pauson–Khand/[4 + 2] cycloaddition to generate optically active multicyclic products. The Rh(I) catalyst is also found to catalyze the coupling of a diyne with CO followed by [4 + 2] cycloaddition to generate an optically active multicyclic product. Abstract:A series of alpha,beta-divinyl tetrahydropyrroles, synthesized by asymmetric allylic C-H bond activation/conjugated diene addition reaction of ene-2-dienes, were found to be very efficient chiral chain diene ligands in the rhodium-catalyzed conjugated addition of organoboronic acids to various alpha,beta-unsaturated compounds, achieving the desired chiral adducts with good to excellent yields and ee values.

Abstract:An oxyacetamide-directed Rh(III)-catalyzed Z-type alkenyl C–H functionalization through a rare exo-rhodacyle intermediate is described, forming multisubstituted dienes and allenes. A variety of alkenes and propargylic carbonate coupling partners are suitable for this transformation with high regio- and stereoselectivity. Abstract:An originally designed Rh-catalyzed [4 + 2] cycloaddition reaction of nitrogen-tethered 1,7-ene-dienes turned out to be a cycloisomerization reaction, which involves allylic C-H activation/alkene insertion into Rh-H bond/reductive elimination processes. Deuterium labeling experiments gave support to the proposed mechanism. This unexpected cycloisomerization reaction provides an efficient way to synthesize trans-divinylpiperidines from easily accessed linear 1,7-ene-dienes.

Abstract:We report the first Rh2(II)-catalyzed asymmetric cycloisomerization of activated enynes to provide cyclopropane-fused tetra-hydropyridines in good yields and excellent enantioselectivities under mild conditions. The activated group, CHZ (Z is electron-withdrawing group (EWG)), in the enyne substrates exerts two synergetic roles, one is to activate alkyne for the cyclopropanation reaction; the other is to introduce the C-H···O interaction between substrate and catalyst (reducing the energy barrier of the reaction). This double-mode activation was supported by both density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental tests. This strategy was also extended to other CH2Z (Z can be OH, OMe, F) as activating groups that made the CH2 more acidic so that the substrates could also form increased C-H···O interaction with the catalyst.

Abstract:Despite its significant potential, a general catalytic asymmetric [4+2]-cycloaddition of simple and electronically unbiased dienes with any type of aldehyde has long been unknown. Previously developed methodologies invariably require activated, electronically engineered substrates. We now provide a general solution to this problem. We show that highly acidic and confined imidodiphosphorimidates (IDPis) are extremely effective Brønsted acid catalysts of the hetero-Diels-Alder reaction of a wide variety of aldehydes and dienes to give enantiomerically enriched dihydropyrans. Excellent stereoselectivity is generally observed and a variety of scents and natural products can be easily accessed.
