Abstract:A series of alpha,beta-divinyl tetrahydropyrroles, synthesized by asymmetric allylic C-H bond activation/conjugated diene addition reaction of ene-2-dienes, were found to be very efficient chiral chain diene ligands in the rhodium-catalyzed conjugated addition of organoboronic acids to various alpha,beta-unsaturated compounds, achieving the desired chiral adducts with good to excellent yields and ee values.

Abstract:Recently we reported the first conjugated diene. assisted, rhodium-catalyzed allylic C-H bond activation and addition to alkenes to synthesize multifunctional tetrahydropyrroles, tetrahydrofurans, and cyclopentanes from ene-2-diene substrates, with good to excellent diastereoselectivities. Here we report a DFT study of the mechanism of this reaction, aiming to obtain a detailed potential energy surface, to understand factors determining its stereochemistry, and to determine why conjugated diene is very critical for the success of this reaction. DFT calculations unveiled that the catalytic cycle of this reaction involves a sequence of substrate catalyst complex formation, allylic C-H activation, alkene insertion into the Rh-H bond, and di-pi-allyl-assisted C(sp(3))-Rh-C(sp(3)) reductive elimination, among which the C-H activation and alkene insertion steps are reversible. The main reason for the formation of the cis-divinyl product is that the irreversible reductive elimination transition state from the bis-allylic Rh complex favors a cis 5/5 bicyclic conformation to reduce the ring strain. Moreover, formation of the cis-divinyl product is also assisted by the alkene coordination to the Rh center in the reductive elimination transition state. DFT insights revealed that the conjugated diene, which is very critical for the target reaction, disfavors the double-bond isomerization and facilitates the reductive elimination for the bis-allylic Rh complex, causing the C-H activation and alkene insertion to occur. The computational results showed that the bridgehead double-bond distortion, as suggested by the Bredt's rule, is responsible for not generating the type II [4+2] cycloadducts from ene-2-dienes.

Abstract:α-Pyridones and α-pyrones are ubiquitous structural motifs found in natural products and biologically active small molecules. Here, we report an Rh-catalyzed electrochemical vinylic C–H annulation of acrylamides with alkynes, affording cyclic products in good to excellent yield. Divergent syntheses of α-pyridones and cyclic imidates are accomplished by employing N- phenyl acrylamides and N- tosyl acrylamides as substrates, respectively. Additionally, excellent regioselectivities are achieved when using unsymmetrical alkynes. This electrochemical process is environmentally benign compared to traditional transition metal-catalyzed C–H annulations because it avoids the use of stoichiometric metal oxidants. DFT calculations elucidated the reaction mechanism and origins of substituent-controlled chemoselectivity. The sequential C–H activation and alkyne insertion under rhodium catalysis leads to the seven-membered ring vinyl-rhodium intermediate. This intermediate undergoes either the classic neutral concerted reductive elimination to produce α-pyridones, or the ionic stepwise pathway to produce cyclic imidates.

Abstract:Herein, we report the rhodium-catalyzed domino arylation/cyclization reaction of unactivated internal alkynes to afford the optically active indenols in excellent yields (up to 92%) and extremely high enantioselectivities (up to 99% ee) in the presence of new amide substituted chiral diene ligands. Notably, a total of 21 new chiral diene ligands are synthesized, which are potential choices for other asymmetric reactions.

Abstract:Because of the inherent difficulty in differentiating two olefins, the development of metal-catalyzed asymmetric cyclization of 1,6-dienes remains challenging. Herein, we describe the first rhodium(III)-catalyzed asymmetric borylative cyclization of cyclohexadienone-tethered mono-, 1,1di-, and (E)-1,2-disubstituted alkenes (1,6-dienes), affording optically pure cis-bicyclic skeletons bearing three or four contiguous stereocenters with high yields (25-93%), and excellent diastereoselectivities (>20:1 dr) and enantioselectivities (90-99% ee). This mild catalytic approach is generally compatible with a wide range of functional groups, which allows several facile conversions of the cyclization products. Furthermore, on the basis of our SAESI-MS experiment and computational study, a Rh(I)/(III) catalytic cycle is proposed in this tandem reaction, and the Rh(I) active species catalyzes the overall transformation via sequential oxidative addition of B(2)pin(2), olefin insertion, cyclizing conjugate addition, and reductive elimination. The irreversible conjugate addition determines the overall regioselectivity of borylative cyclization, and the ring strain favors the formation of 5,6-bicyclic structure. This highlights the control of ring strain in diene cyclizations, which provides a useful basis for future reaction designs.

Abstract:A series of novel chiral diene ligands (1R,4S)-L1, which are based on the bicyclo[2.2.1]heptadiene skeleton and are substituted with methyl and an ester group at the bridgehead carbons, were synthesized through rhodium-catalyzed asymmetric arylative bis-cyclization of 1,6-enyne 1 as a key step. Mechanistic studies suggest that protonolysis of a Rh-allyl intermediate generated by diene insertion into a Rh-aryl is the turnover limiting step and occurs by an inner-sphere proton transfer pathway.

Abstract:Transition metal-catalyzed addition of organometallics to aryl(alkyl)alkynes has been well known to proceed with the regioselectivity in forming a carbon–carbon bond at the alkyl-substituted carbon ( β -addition). Herein, the reverse regiochemistry with high selectivity in giving 1,1-diarylalkenes ( α -addition) was realized in the reaction of arylboronic acids with aryl(alkyl)alkynes by use of a rhodium catalyst coordinated with a chiral diene ligand, whereas the arylation of the same alkynes proceeded with the usual regioselectivity ( β -addition) in the presence of a rhodium/DM-BINAP catalyst. The regioselectivity can be switched by the choice of ligands on the rhodium catalysts. This reverse regioselectivity also enabled the catalytic asymmetric synthesis of phoenix -like axially chiral alkylidene dihydroanthracenes with high enantioselectivity through an α -addition/1,4-migration/cyclization sequence.

Abstract:Chiral dienes are important ligands in asymmetric catalysis but they are less accessible than other commonly used ligands such as chiral bisphosphines. Here, we show that intramolecular [4 + 2] cycloaddition of a simply attained chiral allenecarboxanilide readily affords pseudoenantiomeric bicyclo[2.2.2]octa‐2,5‐dienes containing an alkenyl bromide, which can be readily functionalized to give diverse chiral diene ligands. The synthesis is straightforward and easily conducted on multigram scales. These ligands exhibit high performance in nine types of enantioselective Rh(I)‐catalyzed 1,4‐addition or 1,2‐addition reactions.

Abstract:Spiro cyclopentadienyl rhodium (SCpRh) complexes are powerful catalysts for promoting asymmetric C–H functionalization reactions. However, the application of chiral SCp ligands is limited due to tedious synthetic procedures and expensive starting materials. Herein, we have developed a series of chiral spiro ligands (BCSCp) with 6–7 steps from commercially available and cheap Bisphenol C. Their corresponding rhodium complexes have been prepared and successfully applied in enantioselective aryl C–H addition to nitroalkenes, affording a series of C–H adducts in up to 88% yield with up to 98% ee.
