Synthesis

Abstract:Iron(II) chloride catalyzed direct alkylation of sp(3) C-H bond adjacent to oxygen in propargyl ethers has been accomplished by the use of 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone (DDQ) as oxidant under mild reaction conditions. The reaction proceeded smoothly with a variety of 1,3-diketones leading to beta-dicarbonyl ether in moderate yields. In the absence of 1,3-diketones, ynenones were produced by the use of iron(III) chloride and DDQ.

Abstract:The practical and diversified functionalization of ubiquitous C(sp3)–H bonds is an economically attractive yet chemically challenging approach to build molecular complexity from abundant chemical raw materials. Herein, we have identified a very robust and practical FeCl3/HCl photocatalytic system that enables greatly efficient C–H alkylation, oxidation, chlorination, fluorination, amination, alkynylation, and sulfonylation with total turnover number (TON) of up to 9,900. The aliphatic C–H activation is mediated by chlorine radical, in situ generated from a photoactive tetrahedral [FeIIICl4]− via ligand-to-metal charge transfer excitation, and the use of HCl as co-catalyst significantly improves the total TON by more than one order of magnitude.

Abstract:A Fe(III)-promoted highly selective photo-oxidation of benzylic C–H bond delivering relative carbonyl products is reported. By altering the concentration of ferric salt, methylarenes can be selectively oxidized under UV irradiation to furnish aromatic aldehydes or acids, respectively. By this protocol, the oxidation of ethylarenes provides the corresponding acetophenones. The reaction is inferred to involve divergent pathways in different concentrations of catalyst for the alternative selectivity between aldehydes and aicds. The reusable catalyst, high conversion and selectivity make this oxidation a green and economic protocol for the synthesis of aromatic carbonyl compounds.

Abstract:The discovery of catalytic systems based on earth-abundant transition metals for the functionalization of C-H bonds enables streamlined and sustainable solutions to problems in synthetic organic chemistry. In this Communication, we disclose an iron-based catalytic system for the functionalization of propargylic and allylic C-H bonds. Inexpensive and readily available cyclopentadienyliron(II) dicarbonyl complexes were employed as catalysts for a novel deprotonative activation mode for C-H functionalization, an approach that allows for the direct union of unsaturated building blocks with aryl aldehydes and other carbonyl electrophiles to deliver a range of unsaturated alcohol coupling products under operationally simple and functional group tolerant reaction conditions.

Abstract:Herein, we report the alkylation of alkenyl carbonates using alkyl Grignard reagents and iron catalysis to generate C(sp2)–C(sp3) bonds and provide synthetically useful yields over a range of substrates. The transformation allows the alkylation of a wide range of substrates, including aromatic rings, alkanes, cycloalkanes, heterocycles. This reaction has introduced a new family of electrophiles to the iron‐catalyzed cross‐coupling reactions.
