Abstract:β-Alkoxy sulfides are widely used as versatile building blocks in organic synthesis. Therefore, it is highly desirable to develop a convenient and efficient method for oxysulfenylation of alkenes. In this communication, an easy and efficient metal-free approach to β-alkoxy sulfides has been developed. The protocol uses readily available 1-(arylthio)pyrrolidine-2,5-diones and alcohols as the oxysulfenylating agents, chloroform as the solvent, and no ligand, additive and exclusion of air were required. Therefore, the present method provides a useful strategy for synthesis of β-alkoxy sulfides.

Abstract:An efficient copper-catalyzed tandem oxidation/alpha-formylation reaction of 2,3-dihydro-1H-pyrroles in an oxygen atmosphere has been developed. The new reaction is conducted in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), which serves as both the carbonyl carbon source and solvent, in the presence of trifluoroacetic acid to directly generate structurally diverse alpha-formylpyrrole derivatives in one pot in moderate to good yields. Sensitive aldehyde groups remain intact in the presence of an oxidant, trifluoroacetic acid and a transition metal salt. A possible mechanism is presented.

Abstract:Metal-free aerobic oxidation of aryl sulfides to sulfoxides and sulfones has been developed in the presence of aliphatic aldehydes with excellent selectivity and yields. The reaction proceeded under mild conditions with the catalysis of N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI). Control experiments indicated that the reaction underwent a free radical pathway with the acylperoxyl radicals generated from aldehydes in situ as the key intermediates. The aromatic aldehydes were less efficient in the sulfide oxidation, which might be explained by the fact that the aromatic ring dispersed the electrons of free radicals and thus weakened the attacking ability of peroxy free radicals.

Abstract:A simple, efficient and practical iron-catalyzed azidoarylthiation of alkenes has been developed at room temperature, and the corresponding products containing ortho-sited sulfide and azide units were obtained in moderate to good yields with good tolerance of functional groups. The protocol uses readily available 1-(alkylthio)pyrrolidine-2,5-diones and trimethylsilyl azide as the alkylthiation and azidation reagents, respectively, inexpensive and environmentally friendly iron chloride as the catalyst without addition of any ligand and additive.

Abstract:An efficient and Brønsted acid free one-pot protocol to directly generate structurally sophisticated α-formylpyrrole derivatives in moderate to good yields has been demonstrated, involving an iron-mediated domino oxidation/formylation reaction of readily available 2,3-dihydro-1H-pyrroles in dimethyl sulfoxide and air atmosphere, in which dimethyl sulfoxide acts as the formyl donor. A possible mechanism is presented.

Abstract:A series of 1-alkenyl aryl sulfides was synthesized from thiiranes and diaryliodonium salts in tetrahydrofuran in the presence of potassium tert -butoxide. The proposed reaction mechanism involves generation of benzynes from the diaryliodonium salts in the presence of the base. Then, nucleophilic attack of the benzynes by thiiranes, followed by hydrogen abstraction and ring opening of the generated thiiranium intermediates, provides the sulfides. These sulfides were further oxidized with performic acid to the corresponding sulfones. The current method provides a metal-free and safe method for the preparation of 1-alkenyl aryl sulfides and their sulfones.

Abstract:Abstract Herein, a metal-free electrochemical dihydroxylation of unactivated alkenes is described. The transformation proceeds smoothly under mild conditions with a broad range of unactivated alkenes, providing valuable and versatile dihydroxylated products in moderate to good yields without the addition of costly transition metals and stoichiometric amounts of chemical oxidants. Moreover, this method can be applied to a range of natural products and pharmaceutical derivatives, further demonstrating its synthetic utility. Mechanistic studies have revealed that iodohydrin and epoxide intermediate are formed during the reaction process.

Abstract:The selective oxo-functionalization of hydrocarbons under mild conditions with molecular oxygen as the terminal oxidant continues to be a hot topic in organic synthesis and industrial chemistry. Though many oxidation protocols in combination with transition metal salts, enzymes, organometallic catalysts, or organocatalysts have been summarized recently, a review that focuses solely on the metal-free allylic/benzylic oxidation strategies with molecular oxygen is still unavailable. This critical review will summarize recent significant advances achieved in this important field under the scope of green chemistry, which covers the promising applications and brief mechanistic profiles involving three kinds of efficient catalysts, namely N-hydroxyimides, homogeneous/heterogeneous light-sensitive molecules, and heteroatom-doped carbon materials, and concerns the sustainability of these methods, as well as predicts the potential utilization of available but unreported analogous catalysts or catalytic systems in this field. Special emphasis will also be placed on the burgeoning metal-free strategies with visible light irradiation from the long-term greenness and sustainability of these oxidation processes due to their established appealing performances under ambient conditions.

Abstract:A metal-free oxidative trifluoromethyl-thiolation of terminal alkynes using readily available CF(3)SiMe(3) and elemental sulfur at room temperature has been developed. This reaction provides an efficient and convenient method for the preparation of alkynyl trifluoromethyl sulfides bearing a wide range of functional groups.
