Abstract:Several examples on Pd-catalysed carbonylation of methyl C(sp3)-H bonds with gaseous CO via Pd(II)/Pd(0) catalysis have been reported. However, methylene C(sp3)-H carbonylation remains a great challenge, largely due to the lack of reactivity of C-H bonds and the difficulty in CO migratory insertion. Herein, we report the stereoselective alkoxycarbonylation of both methyl and methylene C(sp3)-H bonds with alkyl chloroformates through a Pd(II)/Pd(IV) catalytic cycle. A broad range of aliphatic carboxamides and alkyl chloroformates are compatible with this protocol. In addition, this process is scalable and the directing group could be easily removed under mild conditions with complete retention of configuration.
Identification of a potent palladium-aryldiphosphine catalytic system for high-performance carbonylation of alkenes

Abstract:Abstract The development of stable and efficient ligands is of vital significance to enhance the catalytic performance of carbonylation reactions of alkenes. Herein, an aryldiphosphine ligand ( L11 ) bearing the [Ph 2 P(ortho-C 6 H 4 )] 2 CH 2 skeleton is reported for palladium-catalyzed regioselective carbonylation of alkenes. Compared with the industrially successful Pd/1,2-bis(di-tert-butylphosphinomethyl)benzene catalyst, catalytic efficiency catalyzed by Pd/ L11 on methoxycarbonylation of ethylene is obtained, exhibiting better catalytic performance (TON: >2,390,000; TOF: 100,000 h −1 ; selectivity: >99%) and stronger oxygen-resistance stability. Moreover, a substrate compatibility (122 examples) including chiral and bioactive alkenes or alcohols is achieved with up to 99% yield and 99% regioselectivity. Experimental and computational investigations show that the appropriate bite angle of aryldiphosphine ligand and the favorable interaction of 1,4-dioxane with Pd/ L11 synergistically contribute to high activity and selectivity while the electron deficient phosphines originated from electron delocalization endow L11 with excellent oxygen-resistance stability.

Abstract:Palladium (Pd)-catalyzed radical oxidative C-H carbonylation of alkanes is a useful method for functionalizing hydrocarbons, but there is still a lack of understanding of the mechanism, which restricts the application of this reaction. In this work, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were carried out to study the mechanism for a Pd-catalyzed radical esterification reaction. Two plausible reaction pathways have been proposed and validated by DFT calculations. The computational results reveal that the generated alkyl radical prefers to add to the carbon monoxide (CO) molecule to form a carbonyl radical before bonding with the Pd species. Radical addition onto Pd followed by CO migratory insertion was unfavorable owing to the high energy barrier of the migratory insertion step. The regioselectivity of the C(sp(3))-H carbonylation was also investigated by DFT. The results show that the regioselectivity is controlled by both the bond dissociation energy of the reacting C-H bond and the stability of the corresponding generated carbon radical. Competitive side reactions also affected the yield and regioselectivity owing to the rapid consumption of the stable radical intermediate.

Abstract:Remarkable progress has been made on chelation-assisted α and β C–H functionalization of aryl alkenes; however, there is no report on C–H allylation reactions. This work focuses on the first α and β C–H allylation of aryl alkenes using allyl carbonates to produce linear and branched 1,4-dienes enabled by chelation-assistance of pyridine-2-carboxamide, simply performed with Pd(OAc) 2 /AcOH in ethanol. This operationally simple protocol exhibited wide functionality tolerance and broad substrate scope and enabled successful gram-scaled preparation.

A palladium-carbene migratory insertion is proposed to play the key role in this transformation. Abstract:A practical palladium catalyzed allylation condensation of allyl alcohols with hydrazines and aldehydes was developed, enabling the syntheses of various allylhydrazones in high yields with excellent regioselectivities. The efficient catalytic system enabled the utilization of allylhydrazones as practical substrates in palladium catalyzed carbonylation to synthesize various allyl acylhydrazones with excellent regioselectivities. Furthermore, four-component carbonylation syntheses of allyl acylhydrazones in same catalytic system promoted the transformation of weakly nucleophilic hydrazines and -zones.

Abstract:Comprehensive Summary A new approach to allylic alkylation is realized using an atomically dispersed palladium catalyst (Pd1/TiO2‐EG). Unlike conventional methods that require derivation of substrates and utilization of additives, this method allows direct allylic alkylation from allylic alcohols, producing H2O as the sole by‐product. The catalyst's high efficiency is attributed to the local hydrogen bonding at the organic‐inorganic interface (Pd‐EG interface), facilitating hydroxyl group activation for η3 π‐allyl complex formation. The system demonstrates successful direct C‐O and C‐C coupling reactions with high selectivity, requiring no additives. This study highlights the potential of supported atomically dispersed catalysts for greener and more efficient catalysis, meanwhile offers unique insights into the distinct behavior of atomically dispersed catalysts in comparison to homogeneous or nanoparticle‐based catalysts.
