Abstract:Plasma panel detectors are a variant of micropattern detectors that are sensitive to ionizing radiation. They are motivated by the design and operation of plasma display panels. The detectors consist of arrays of electrically and optically isolated pixels defined by metallized cavities embedded in a dielectric substrate. These are hermetically sealed gaseous detectors that use exclusively non-hydrocarbon gas mixtures. The newest variant of these closed-architecture detectors is known as the Microhexcavity plasma panel detector ($\mu$Hex) consisting of 2 mm wide, regular close-packed hexagonal pixels each with a circular thick-film anode. The fabrication, staging, and operation of these detectors is described. Initial tests with the $\mu$Hex detectors operated in Geiger mode yield Volt-level signals in the presence of ionizing radiation. The spontaneous discharge rate in the absence of a source is roughly 3-4 orders of magnitude lower compared to the rates measured using low energy betas.

Abstract:The design principle for a multi-wire proportional chamber with a cathode strip and delay-line readout is described. A prototype chamber of a size of 10 cm ×10 cm was made together with the readout electronics circuit. A very clean signal with very low background noise was obtained by applying a transformer between the delay-line and the pre-amplifier in order to match the resistance. Along the anode wire direction a position resolution of less than 0.5 mm was achieved with a 55Fe-5.9 keV X ray source. The simple structure, large effective area and high position resolution allow the application of a gas chamber of this kind to many purposes.

Abstract:The Microhexcavity Panel ( muHex) is a novel gaseous micropattern particle detector comprised of a dense array of close-packed hexagonal pixels, each operating as an independent detection unit for ionizing radiation. It is a second generation detector derived from plasma panel detectors and microcavity detectors. The muHex is under development to be deployed as a scalable, fast timing (ns) and hermetically sealed gaseous tracking detector with high rate ( > 100 KHz/cm^2 ) capability. The devices reported here were fabricated as 16 x 16 pixel arrays of 2 mm edge-to-edge, 1 mm deep hexagonal cells embedded in a thin, 1.4 mm glass-ceramic wafer. Cell walls are metalized cathodes, connected to high voltage bus lines through conductive vias. Anodes are small, 457 micron diameter metal discs screen printed on the upper substrate. The detectors are filled with an operating gas to near 1 atm and then closed with a shut-off valve. They have been operated in both avalanche mode and gas discharge devices, producing mV to volt level signals with about 1 to 3 ns rise times. Operation in discharge mode is enabled by high impedance quench resistors on the high voltage bus at each pixel site. Results indicate that each individual pixel behaves as an isolated detection unit with high single pixel intrinsic efficiency to both beta's from radioactive sources and to cosmic ray muons. Continuous avalanche mode operation over several days at hit rates over 300 KHz/cm^2 with no gas flow have been observed. Measurements of pixel isolation, timing response, efficiency, hit rate and rate stability are reported.

Abstract:Broadband noise on supercontinuum spectra generated in microstructure fiber is shown to lead to amplitude fluctuations as large as 50 % for certain input laser pulse parameters. We study this noise using both experimental measurements and numerical simulations with a generalized stochastic nonlinear Schroedinger equation, finding good quantitative agreement over a range of input pulse energies and chirp values. This noise is shown to arise from nonlinear amplification of two quantum noise inputs: the input pulse shot noise and the spontaneous Raman scattering down the fiber.

Abstract:The Micro Pixel Chamber (mu-PIC) using resistive electrodes has been developed and tested. The surface cathodes are made from resistive material, by which the electrical field is reduced when large current is flowed. Two-dimensional readouts are achieved by anodes and pickup electrodes, on which signals are induced. High gas gain (> 60000) was measured using 55Fe (5.9 keV) source, and very intensive spark reduction was attained under fast neutron. The spark rate of resistive mu-PIC was only 10^-4 times less than that of conventional mu-PIC at the gain of 10^4. With these developments, a new MPGD with no floating structure is achieved, with enough properties of both high gain and good stability to detect MIP particles. In addition, mu-PIC can be operated with no HV applied on anodes by using resistive cathodes. Neither AC coupling capacitors nor HV pull up resisters are needed for any anode electrode. Signal readout is drastically simplified by that configuration.

Abstract:A multi-strip ionization chamber has been built for precise and fast monitoring of the carbon beam spatial distribution at Heavy Ion Researched Facility of Lanzhou Cooling Storing Ring (HIRFL-CSR). All the detector's anode, cathode and sealed windows are made by 2μm aluminized Mylar film in order to minimize the beam lateral deflection. The sensitive area of the detector is (100×100)mm2, with the anode segmented in 100 strips, and specialized front-end electronics has been developed for simplifying the data acquisition and quick feedback of the relevant parameters to beam control system. It can complete one single beam profile in 200μs.

Abstract:Identification of high momentum hadrons at the future EIC is crucial, gaseous RICH detectors are therefore viable option. Compact collider setups impose to construct RICHes with small radiator length, hence significantly limiting the number of detected photons. More photons can be detected in the far UV region, using a windowless RICH approach. QE of CsI degrades under strong irradiation and air contamination. Nanodiamond based photocathodes (PCs) are being developed as an alternative to CsI. Recent development of layers of hydrogenated nanodiamond powders as an alternative photosensitive material and their performance, when coupled to the THick Gaseous Electron Multipliers (THGEM)-based detectors, are the objects of an ongoing R\&D. We report about the initial phase of our studies.

Abstract:The characteristics of a one-atmosphere xenon gas proportional scintillation counter (GPSC) instrumented with a novel photosensor are reported. A microstrip gas chamber (MSGC) with a CsI photocathode deposited directly onto its electrode surface is used in place of the standard photomultiplier tube assembly to record the scintillation light from xenon. The microstrip electrodes also function as the GPSC second scintillation grid. The combination results in a simple and compact device that demonstrates the linear response characteristics of the scintillation process in xenon.

Abstract:We present the performance of a new proportional gas detector. Its geometry consists of a cathode plane with 70x70 micron apertures, crossed by 25 micron anode strips to which it is attached by 50 micron kapton spacers. In the region where the avalanche takes place, the anode strips are suspended in the gas mixture like in a standard wire chamber. This detector exhibits high rate capability and large gains, introducing very little material.

Abstract:We describe the first tests with a new proportional gas detector. Its geometry consists of slits opened in a copper metallized kapton foil with 30μm anode strips suspended in these openings. In this way, the multiplication process is similar to a standard MSGC. The fundamental difference is the absence of an insulating substrate around the anode. Also the material budget is significantly reduced, and the problems related to charging-up or polarization are removed. Ageing properties of this detector are under study.

Abstract:A low pressure two dimensional position sensitive multiwire proportional chamber (LPMWPC) has been developed for measurements of low Z charged particles from the nuclear reaction induced by radioactive ion beam. The detector has a 50mm x 50mm sensitive area and consists of three grids (X-position cathode Y-position). The position is determined through delay line readout mode. The detector has good beam transparency and is also adequate to be used in vacuum. The LPMWPC has been tested at a pressure of 800Pa of n-heptane and a bias Voltage of 720V. The test results indicate that the position resolution of the chamber is Deltax = Deltay = I mm and detection efficiency is larger than 80 % for the low Z particle at intermediate energies. This kind of chamber has be used to determine the direction of the incident particle.

Abstract:Application of micro-pattern gaseous detectors (MPGD) to photon detection has been widely investigated over the past decades. A double micro-mesh gaseous structure (DMM) prototype is developed with a thermal bonding technique for this application. Excellent performance for detecting single photon has been demonstrated in various tests with X-ray and ultra-violet (UV) laser light. The gain of the DMM prototype can reach up to >10(6) for single electrons while maintaining a very low ion-backflow (IBF) ratio down to <0.05%, showing good potential to serve as the photon detector in Cherenkov light detection, as well as for other applications, e.g. TPC readout, where a very low level of IBF is needed. The method to further suppress the IBF of DMM is discussed, and verified by simulation and experimental studies.

Abstract:With the continuous development of the micro-structure of gas detectors,many different new detection requirements have been proposed.For more stable working time,lower discharge rate with long term and high effective gain,a new structure detector has been designed.Combined with the detection's advantages of MicroMegas and gas electron multiplier(GEM),it is composed of a MicroMagas chamber with one GEM foil as preamplifier.In this paper,the structure of the detector and detection principle are presented in detail.Using a 55Fe X-ray radioactive source in the operation mixtures gas of argon and isobutene(Ar/Iso=95/5),the performances of the detector gain,discharge rate,energy resolution and stable working time are investigated.Compared with standard MicroMegas detectors with no GEM foil,our detector show that a stable working time could reach more than 30h of continuous work,the gain of the detector could exceed 106 and the discharge rate could be reduced by nearly 100 times at the same gain.

Abstract:Resistive plate chambers (RPCs) are widely used to detect high-energy charged particles, especially muons, due to the high gain, moderate time and spatial resolution, simple design and low cost of these detectors. While the simple streamer mode is adequate for cosmic-ray and low-rate accelerator experiments, the avalanche mode is required for high-rate experiments such as CMS at LHC. In this paper construction of a medium-sized double-gap RPC made of Chinese materials is reported. The experimental set-up of cosmic-ray and muon beam tests are introduced. The avalanche mode was clearly observed. Good efficiency and time resolution were obtained from the beam test at CERN under normal irradiation renditions. At very high radiation background the chamber efficiency decreases, indicating the necessity to change the resistivity value of the Chinese bakelites.

Abstract:One resistive plate chamber made of Chinese materials and one Italian resistive plate chamber have been tested in the Gamma Irradiation Facility (GIF) at CERN on a high intensity muon beam together with a137Cs source to give a uniform photon background, and simulating conditions close to those expected for an LHC muon detector. The results are analyzed. Good space and time resolutions are obtained which satisfy the future CMS experiment requirements. The detection efficiency is different between two RPCs against a high irradiation background. The reason is discussed.

Abstract:The wedge strip anode （WSA） has been widely used in 2-D position-sensitive detectors. A circular WSA with an effective diameter of 52 mm is successfully coupled to a tripe gas electron multiplier （GEM） detector through a simple resistive layer. A spatial resolution of 440 μm （FWHM） is achieved for a 10 kVp X-ray using 1 atm Ar:CO 2 =70:30 gas. The simple electronics of only three channels makes it very useful in applications strongly requiring simple interface design, e.g. sealed tubes and high pressure detectors.

Abstract:We report the design, construction, and initial commissioning results of a large high pressure gaseous Time Projection Chamber (TPC) with Micromegas modules for charge readout. The detector vessel has an inner volume of about 600 L and an active volume of 270 L. At 10 bar operating pressure, the active volume contains about 20 kg of xenon gas and can image charged particle tracks. Drift electrons are collected by the charge readout plane, which accommodates a tessellation of seven Micromegas modules. Each of the Micromegas covers a square of 20 cm by 20 cm. A new type of Microbulk Micromegas is chosen for this application due to its good gain uniformity and low radioactive contamination. Initial commissioning results with 1 Micromegas module running with 1 bar argon and isobutane gas mixture and 5 bar xenon and trimethylamine (TMA) gas mixture are reported.
