Abstract:Elucidating the hydrogen leakage and diffusion processes in confined environment is of vital importance for safety hazard assessment related to hydrogen leakage incidents. In the study, hydrogen leakage flowrates with 0.5 mm circular leakage port under 0.8–2.0 MPa were firstly measured. Subsequently, the 1-min hydrogen leakage and 3-min diffusion experiments were conducted in a 28.0 m 3 customized hydrogen leakage chamber with 26 hydrogen concentration sensors placed at the left-side wall, right-side wall, and roof wall. The real-time hydrogen concentration values at different spatial positions under no air ventilation conditions were monitored. Good consistency among the three repeated test results is observed. The averaged leakage flowrate is 74.68 NLPM at 1.0 MPa, and it reaches 144.67 NLPM at the leakage pressure of 2.0 MPa. Besides, the hydrogen leakage flowrate is found to follow a linear growth trend. The shortest time to reach 100 ppm is 14.6 s at a leakage flowrate of 61.86 NPLM, and it is reduced to 9.2 s at 144.67 NPLM. Meanwhile, the corresponding sensor label shifts from sensor B1 to sensor C2_L. With leakage flowrate increasing, the maximum detected hydrogen concentration keeps rising monotonously. The dynamic hydrogen concentration variations as well as contour map at side walls are demonstrated. The hydrogen concentrations at chamber middle positions are much lower than that of roof positions. It is further inferred that vortical motions exist at chamber corners and side walls. At the end of 240 s, the leaked hydrogen is observed to be uniformly distributed at the same horizontal level regardless of the leakage position. The study is ought to provide valuable test data for model validation in numerical simulations.
