Abstract:Herein, weaddressedtheleakdetection and calibrationinvolved in the rigid positivestandard leaks, fabricated by quartz glassdrilling and being capable of withstanding a high pressureup to 7 MPa, in thehelium test loop,a test platform for the high temperature helium-cooled nuclear reactor ( HTR) .The influence of thepressure difference, in 0.7~7.0 MPa range, was mathematically formulated with circular tube model, theoreticallycalculat-ed and experimentally evaluated in standard leak comparison method.The calculated and measured results show that in 1.00 ×10 -4 ~2.38 ×10 -7 Pa· m3/s range,the dependence of the leakage rate on the pressure difference can be well described with viscous-molecular flow theory and can be analytically approximated by in quadraticpolyno-mial fitting.We suggest that the results may be of much technological interest in calibration and detection of high pressure (0 Pa~7 MPa) leaks, especially for HTR.
Impact of Main Pipe Flow Velocity on Leakage and Intrusion Flow: an Experimental Study

Abstract:The classic orifice equation is commonly used to calculate the leakage and intrusion rate for pressurized pipelines with cracks on the pipe wall. The conventional orifice equation does not consider the effect of the flow velocity in the main pipe, and there is a lack of studies on this matter. For this technical note, the influence of the main pipe flow velocity on the outflow and inflow through a crack on the pipe wall was studied in the laboratory. The experimental results show that the impact of the main pipe flow velocity can be significant. When the pressure difference across the orifice was constant, with the increase of the main pipe flow velocity, the outflow velocity increased, but the contraction area of the jet and the outflow discharge coefficient decreased. By comparing orifices with different shapes, it was found that the discharge from the circumferential crack was most sensitive to the main pipe flow velocity. In addition, the main pipe flow promoted the orifice inflow. When the pressure difference across the orifice was constant, with the increase of the main pipe flow velocity, the inflow discharge coefficient increased, which is the opposite pattern to that of the orifice outflow.
Effects of Leakage Points on Intrusion Volume in a Simulated Water Distribution System

Abstract:Contamination can intrude into urban water distribution systems through pipe leakage orifices or other deficiencies, which can create public health risks. Intrusion volume is a significant indicator of health risks when a pollution incident occurs. A pilot-scale platform was constructed to simulate the contamination intrusion through leakage holes caused by low or negative pressure events. The intrusion device was improved from the author's previous study by substituting the replaceable pipes in the main pipe for the side connecting pipe. Comparison between the two intrusion devices demonstrated that the intrusion device with the side connecting pipe may underestimate the intrusion volume. The orifice diameter range is extended to be 3-19.0 mm to analyze the effects of leakage sizes on the intrusion volume. The results show that the intrusion volume first increased and then decreased with increase of the orifice diameter. The calculated intrusion volume by the orifice discharge equation using the measured discharge coefficient is slightly different from the measured intrusion volume.

Abstract:Microchannels are widely used for heat transfer enhancement. The pressure characteristics are one of the most important factors affecting the heat transfer performance, and the pressure regulation may also control the heat transfer precisely in turn. As a common flow pattern of two-phase flow, slug flow has obvious advantages for heat and mass transfer, like steady flow rate and large interface area etc. Due to the interface stress and the velocity difference between the continuous phase and the dispersed phase, pressure fluctuations occur in both the flowing direction and the cross section. In oil and natural gas industries, pressure fluctuations of slug flow can be used for the slug size and velocity measurement, and also to analyze the principle of slug generation. However, when it comes to micro scale, pressure fluctuations of slug flow in microchannels is difficult to measure, not only due to the pressure difference within a low pressure range (10 to 103 Pa), but also because of the small size, for which conventional pressure sensors cannot be utilized. In this paper, a numerical method is adopted for the liquid-liquid slug flow (butanol/water) pressure prediction in a cross-junction square microchannel. To begin with, the validation of the numerical method is carried out by comparing the slug size with experiments under the same working conditions. Then, both pressure fluctuations in the flow direction and in the cross section are investigated. With a transient flow model, pressure fluctuations in the cross section at different flowing time are observed. Finally, effects of the dispersed phase (butanol) injection velocity on pressure fluctuations are performed. This work can be used for further study of the slug generation in microchannels. (Less)

Abstract:To determine the calculation formula for subcritical flow big leakage,its character was analyzed in gas pipelines.Based on the small hole model and the pipeline breaking model,a big nozzle model was build and a calculation formula was given for the leakage intensity.Tests were carried out to measure the leakage intensity under different pressure and aperture and to verify the accuracy and applicability of the calculation formula.It is shown that the calculated result agrees well with the measuring one when the nozzle size is small.
Numerical and Experimental Investigation on Leak Discharge-Pressure Relationship for Linear Elastic Deforming Pipes

Abstract:Large amount of research investigated the flow rate from an individual leak as a function of the internal pressure, but few of them managed to separate the effect of pipe deformation and that of leak hydraulics. In this study, experiments were carried out simultaneously measuring leak area, flow rate and pressure head so that the discharge coefficient can be experimentally determined. The experiments under both free and submerged condition were conducted. A few anomalies were found. For example, the leakage flow rate of submerged discharge was significantly greater than that of free discharge under full turbulence regime. Meanwhile, for submerged discharge, the discharge coefficient was not constant, but increased first and then decreased. Through CFD simulation, this study provided preliminary expansions of the two anomalies. The less leak flow rate of free discharge may be caused by the friction of water flow and air, and the abnormal decrease of the discharge coefficient of submerged discharge may due to cavitation phenomenon. The phenomena observed in this study could offer more information for researchers about leak hydraulics.

Abstract:The leakage flow through two labyrinth seals, e.g the interlocking seal and the stepped seal, was numerically investigated. Preliminary calculation of the seal-cavity averaged pressure by using the one-dimensional control volume method showed favorable agreement with the experimental measurements. Subsequently, in-depth understanding of the fluid flow through the labyrinth seals was obtained by employing Computational Fluid Dynamics （CFD） and k ?ε turbulence model, which resulted in a potential wealth of information like the streamline pattern, velocity vector field, and distribution of turbulent kinetic energy and static pressure. At the clearance of the seal the turbulent kinetic energy reached the peak value, while in the bulk region of the cavities it decayed fast. The static pressure rapidly dropped as the fluid flow went through the clearance; no distinct difference of the static pressure was inspected in the cavities. Also noted from the numerical results was that the stepped seal showed better sealing performance than the interlocking seal.

Abstract:This study is focused on the leakage flow rate of high-energy fluid passing through narrow elliptical slits with large aspect ratios, which is an issue in the application of the leak-before-break concept. Experiments were conducted using a high-temperature and high-pressure experimental platform at Xi'an Jiaotong University, where the temperature reached up to 320 degrees C and the pressure reached up to 10 MPa. These temperatures and pressures encompass a wide range of operating conditions (single-phase cold water, liquid-vapor (two-phase) mixture, and superheated steam). A series of narrow elliptical slits with different aspect ratios (528-2083) and hydraulic diameters (226-412 um) were used in the experiments. During the experiments, deionized water with a high flow rate (up to 4.5 t/h) was heated for different inlet conditions and the fluid was ejected through the narrow elliptical slits, followed by recovery in a spray chamber under atmospheric pressure. The real-time flow rate was measured as the leakage flow rate in these operating conditions. The experimental results for the subcooled water and two-phase regions were compared with Henry's homogeneous non-equilibrium model, whereas the results for the superheated steam region were compared with Yang's one-dimensional choked flow model. The experimental results indicate that Henry's homogeneous nonequilibrium model can be used to predict the leakage flow rate of fluid passing through narrow elliptical slits in the subcooled region; however, there are significant deviations between the computed and experimental leakage flow rates for the two-phase region. On the other hand, Yang's choked flow model can be used to predict the leakage flow rate of fluid passing through narrow elliptical slits with large aspect ratios. Based on the experimental data, the mathematical model for the two-phase mixture was corrected, and the results obtained from the modified model conform well with the experimental results.

Abstract:The assessment and control of the real losses from water distribution systems require the accurate estimation of the flow rate from an individual leak as a function of the internal pressure. The lack of analytical models able to accurately describe the relationship between the area of the leak and the pressure head is the key problem. This paper utilized the linear-elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) theory for thin shells to derive models for both longitudinal and circumferential cracks. The models were validated by both finite element (FE) simulations and laboratory experiments under varying crack and pipe parameters. Both fluid-structure interaction (FSI) and traditional FE simulations were performed, and the results were compared to quantify the effect of leakage hydraulics on leak area. In the laboratory experiments, an image analysis technology was utilized to measure the leak area and flow rate simultaneously, so that the effect of the discharge coefficient could be excluded. In addition, the leak area was systematically measured under the effect of different parameters. The results revealed that the values predicted by the derived models were in good agreement with the experimental and FE simulation values for both types of cracks. The LEFM theory and the phenomena observed in this study can improve our understanding of the leak behavior and enable the development of effective pressure management strategies for water distribution systems.

Abstract:The accidental leakage is one of the main risks during the pipeline transportation of high pressure CO2. The decompression process of high pressure CO2 involves complex phase transition and large variations of the pressure and temperature fields. A mathematical method based on the homogeneous equilibrium mixture assumption is presented for simulating the leakage flow through a nozzle in a pressurised CO2 pipeline. The decompression process is represented by two sub-models: the flow in the pipe is represented by the blowdown model, while the leakage flow through the nozzle is calculated with the capillary tube assumption. In the simulation, two kinds of real gas equations of state were employed in this model instead of the ideal gas equation of state. Moreover, results of the flow through the nozzle and measurement data obtained from laboratory experiments of pressurised CO2 pipeline leakage were compared for the purpose of validation. The thermodynamic processes of the fluid both in the pipeline and the nozzle were described and analysed.
Study on the Leakage Flow Characteristics in the Stepped Labyrinth Seal Based on CFD

Abstract:The flow and leakage within labyrinth seal are studied by solving the Navier-Stokes equations and energy equations using the simple methods and the SST k-ω turbulence model in Fluent.According to compare the results of numerical simulation with experimental data in the literature,the reliability of simulating is validated.Based on this,the result of the flow and leakage within a stepped diaphragm labyrinth seal is obtain,and an approximate formula for calculating the leakage which amends the effects of the shrinkage of the restriction jet and the incomplete dissipation of turbulence kinetic energy is given.This formula doesn't need to determine the parameter using experiments and can predict the leakage exactly.

Abstract:To obtain the dynamic changes of the flowing parameters for operation and leak detection of pipelines,based on the physical model of pipeline and by introducing terminology boundary condition,the influence of leakage scale, leakage position and the rising time on pressures and flow rates in the pipeline is simulated.The results show that the leakage scale and the rising time mainly influence the amplitude and the shape of the parameter curves respectively while the leakage position influences both of them and the leakage rate is determined by the diameter of the hole and its distance from upstream.Further more the leakage and pump operation have different influences on the parameters and can be used as an aid for operation guide,leak detection as well as operator training.

Abstract:Better understanding of the leakage characteristic through thin-walled pipes is of great importance to maintain the integrity of reactor pressure boundary. This experimental study focuses on the characteristics of two-phase critical flow through short slits (L/d = 4-21), and the test pressure covers the range of 0.1-10.0 MPa. Cracks with small passage opening (as low as 46.5 mu m) were adopted to better simulate the real crack, where both axial and circumferential crack were considered. Therefore the test database was enlarged. Influences of stagnation conditions and crack morphologies were analyzed. The flow mechanism was explained on how flash decides the flow rate by affecting flow pattern and choking: circumferential crack shows a higher leakage than axial crack, due to a weaker choking phenomenon; the flow pattern transition is discovered at low subcooling degree. A dimensionless number3, indicating the fraction of flashing, was proposed and two different flow phenomenon stages were identified and distinguished by beta = 15. Besides, correlations were developed for the flow rate through short slits, showing a reasonable accuracy in predicting the test data both in this study and from literature.

Abstract:The fluid flow in the small pore throat is a nonlinear flow, and the microscopic force between the fluid and the wall cannot be ignored. However, the previously established theories about the leakage between sealing interfaces have not considered the influence of microscopic forces. Based on contact mechanics and percolation theory, the void characteristics of the sealing interface were clarified, and the influence of microscopic force on fluid flow in porous medium was analyzed. Combined with the capillary force, the concept of a critical void radius between the mechanical seal interfaces is proposed. The fluid flow resistance model and leakage rate calculation equation of the sealing interface considering the van der Waals force are established, and the leakage judgment criterion of the sealing interface is provided. Through numerical calculation and experiments, the effect of microscopic force is verified in terms of the fluid flow law and macroscopic leakage rate. The results show that van der Waals forces have an important influence on the fluid flow between the sealing interfaces. As the microchannel size decreases, the van der Waals forces between solid and liquid increase, and the influence of these van der Waals forces on the fluid flow between the sealing interfaces cannot be ignored. The calculation model of the sealing interface leakage rate proposed in this paper shows little difference with the results of the Persson model, and is in good agreement with the experimental results; the maximum relative error is 8.7%, the minimum relative error is only 3.8%.

Abstract:A laboratory scale experimental pipeline system is developed to investigate the leakage behavior of high pressure CO2. The 23-m-long experimental pipeline could provide an inner pressure varying from 0.1 to 10 MPa and a preset temperature within the range of 0 similar to 50 degrees C to ensure a stable initial phase state for the leakage test. Experiments on CO2 leakage with three initial inner pressures and four different nozzle orifice sizes were conducted using this system. The individual and combined effects of inner pressure and leakage orifice size on the main characteristic flow parameters of the pipeline, the structure of the leakage jet, and the temperature decrease of the plume were investigated. Based on the experimental results, limitations of the previous theoretical formula on mass loss rate were discussed. The maximum temperature decrease along the centerline of the far-field plume by Joule-Thomson effect was also studied. The new experimental test facility proves to be valuable in analyzing the hazardous leakage process of CO2 from pipelines. (C) 2014 Society of Chemical Industry and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd

Abstract:Seals are extremely useful devices to prevent fluid leakage. However, the exact mechanism of roughness induced leakage is not well understood. We present a theory of the leak-rate of seals, which is based on percolation theory and a recently developed contact mechanics theory. We study both static and dynamic seals. We present molecular dynamics results which show that when two elastic solids with randomly rough surfaces are squeezed together, as a function of increasing magnification or decreasing squeezing pressure, a non-contact channel will percolate when the (relative) projected contact area, A/A0, is of the order 0.4, in accordance with percolation theory. We suggest a simple experiment which can be used to test the theory.

Experiment on Leakage Flow Characteristics of Labyrinth Seal

Abstract:A rotating seal test rig with a data acquisition system was designed and established to investigate the leakage behavior of a typical labyrinth seal.The leakage and cavity pressure were measured for the labyrinth seal at eight pressure ratios,four rotational speeds,and a sealing gap.The effects of pressure ratio and rotational speed on the leakage behavior and cavity pressure of the labyrinth seal were examined by experiment and simulation.The results show that the maximum relative deviation of the leakage flow rate and cavity pressure predicted is 3.25% and 3.6%,respectively,compared with the experimental data.The flow coefficient increases with pressure ratio and is more sensitive to the smaller pressure ratio at the same rotational speed.The influence of rotational speed on the flow coefficient is very slight which might be neglected at the same pressure ratio.In addition,the cavity pressure coefficient decreases in the direction of flow and is significantly influenced by the cavity structure.

Abstract:This paper presents a critical leak flow from a simulated crack under the fluid condition of high-pressure water steam and supercritical water. An experimental study of critical leak flow has been performed at Xi'an Jiao tong University (XJTU) with a rhomboid crack and two narrow circular cracks, which could be applied in the leak-before-break (LBB) analysis. A rhomboid crack with an opening displacement of 140 mu m and two circle cracks with diameters of 1 mm and 1.84 mm were performed in the experiments. Pressure drop and flow rates were measured to analyze the flow characteristics. Experimental parameters covered pressures up to 23 MPa and temperatures up to 400 degrees C. The results were compared with the theory of Henry's non-equilibrium subcooled two-phase critical flow in long tubes. It was found that the Henry's Homogeneous Non-Equilibrium Model (HHNM) could be extended to predict supercritical fluid critical flow when temperature is lower than the pseudocritical point. A modified 1-D adiabatic friction-choked flow model was developed to upstream superheated steam and supercritical water when temperature is higher than the pseudocritical point. It was found that the predictions of the modified 1-D adiabatic friction-choked flow model agreed well with the present experimental data. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:This review assesses the current state of understanding of the calculation of the rate of flow of gases, vapours and liquids confined in channels, in porous media and in permeable materials with an emphasis on the flow of water and its vapour. One motivation is to investigate the relation between the permeation rate of moisture and that of a noncondensable test gas such as helium, another is to assist in unifying theory and experiment across disparate fields. Available theories of single component ideal gas flows in channels of defined geometry (cylindrical, rectangular and elliptical) are described and their predictions compared with measurement over a wide range of conditions defined by the Knudsen number. Theory for two phase flows is assembled in order to understand the behaviour of four standard water leak configurations: vapour, slug, Washburn and liquid flow, distinguished by the number and location of phase boundaries (menisci). Air may or may not be present as a background gas. Slip length is an important parameter that greatly affects leak rates. Measurements of water vapour flows confirm that water vapour shows ideal gas behaviour. Results on carbon nanotubes show that smooth walls may lead to anomalously high slip lengths arising from the properties of 'confined' water. In porous media, behaviour can be matched to the four standard leaks. Traditional membrane permeation models consider that the permeant dissolves, diffuses and evaporates at the outlet side, ideas we align with those from channel flow. Recent results on graphite oxide membranes show examples where helium which does not permeate while at the same time moisture is almost unimpeded, again a result of confined water. We conclude that while there is no a priori relation between a noncondensable gas flow and a moisture flow, measurements using helium will give results within two orders of magnitude of the moisture flow rate, except in the case where there is anomalous slip or confined water, when moisture specific measurements are essential.
