Abstract:For tubular joints a chord is often axially loaded and the chord stress may have a significant influence on the axial strength of the joints. This paper analyses the influence of chord stress on the ultimate capacity of rectangular tubular T- and TX-joints with FE package ANSYS. A solid element SOLID95 is used to model the joints, including chord, brace, and fillet welds. A contact method is used to simulate the interaction between chord face and brace. The material model is an elastic-perfectly plastic one. Both geometric and material nonlinearity are considered. The numerical results are compared with the available test results and a good agreement is obtained. Furthermore the FE models are reanalyzed under various levels of chord compression or tension. The chord stress is applied as a pre-load, and the brace loads are increased proportionally. The ultimate capacity is defined as peak load in load-displacement curve when the local deformation at the peak load is less than Lu's deformation limit, otherwise Lu's deformation limit is applied to define the ultimate strength. The numerical results show that chord compression and tension have a different influence on the axial strength and are compared against the corresponding design codes.
