Abstract:W-2%Y2O3 composite materials were prepared by wet chemical and rolling method. A comparative study was conducted with commercial pure tungsten. Prior to the experiment, the materials were annealed at 1973 K for 3 h to eliminate their intrinsic defects. Surface evolution of the materials was studied under 50 eV helium ion irradiation to 9.9 × 1024 ions/m2 fluence. Surface damage behavior was analyzed through positron annihilation, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, focused ion beam, transmission electron microscopy, and confocal laser scanning microscopy. Results revealed that the tungsten matrix was associated with the deformed grain orientation after the pure tungsten, and the W-2%Y2O3 composite material were irradiated by helium ion. The nanostructure may have converged at the phase interface and have become increasingly dense. The surface roughness of the W-2%Y2O3 material subjected to helium ion irradiation damage became lower than that of pure tungsten. Helium bubbles accumulated in the near-surface layer phase interface. In addition, the near-surface region of the tungsten matrix of W-2%Y2O3 was remarkably lower than that of the pure tungsten material.
