Abstract:Mutual anxiety will dictate relations between Beijing and Washington over energy and related geo-strategic matters. There is little doubt that the United States cannot tolerate obstruction, real or perceived, to its access to sufficient volumes of foreign oil, now or in the future. Also, particularly between now and the 2008 Olympics Games in Beijing, China will find it a paramount imperative not to suffer from a major reduction in or deliberate disruption to its foreign energy supply. As in the past, American and Chinese oil companies will still have to compete against each other for the same oil assets in a third country. The lack of mutual dependence in energy trade between China and the United States makes it tempting to enter into geopolitically inspired competition. This orientation falls short of the goal of effectively managing competition between the two countries. Instead, future activities and programmes should aim at mutually offering reassurance about a benign strategic intent towards the other side.

Abstract:This article examines the Chinese :assessment of and responses toward the Japanese "Free and Open Indo-Pacific" (FOIP) concept against the background of evolving Sino-Japanese relations. Addressing both its security and economic concerns, the FOIP is Tokyo's top-level regional strategy design in the context of China's rise. The development of the Japanese FOIP has been fluctuating with the evolution of Sino-Japanese relations and the emerging Sino-U.S. strategic contest over the past decade. The complexity and the fluid nature of the Japanese FOIP has prompted varying assessments and policy recommendations :among Chinese analysts, which can be roughly divided into three categories: the hardline approach, the hedging approach, and the docking approach. Meanwhile, remarks of Chinese officials on the Japanese FOIP retnain elusive, carefully differentiating between the Indo-Pacific strategy of the United States and that of Japan. All of these aspects reveal the complexity and flexibility of China's policies. 'the COVID-19 pandemic and the recent domestic changes of Japan and the U.S. have further complicated geopolitical and geoeconomic tensions. As a consequence, the Sino-Japanese relationship has become awkward once again.

Abstract:The U.S.–Japan alliance today faces a rapidly changing security environment in Northeast Asia and a set of challenges that must be managed well to maintain regional stability. North Korea's unrestrained missile and nuclear weapons programs mean that the alliance will eventually face a hostile regime that can strike its neighbors with nuclear weapons. A rising China, particularly with its increasingly capable military and uncertain regional aspirations, poses a special challenge. The U.S–Japan alliance should encourage positive behavior by China and engage constructively and cooperatively with Beijing. If Japan's troubled relationship with South Korea fails to improve, it could benefit both North Korea and China. The United States will stand firmly by its Japanese ally, and there is every reason to believe that Washington and Tokyo can take their relationship to the next level. But Tokyo must stop undermining its past declarations on history and comfort women. Missteps in this sensitive area are sending the wrong message to Japan's neighbors, exacerbating regional tensions, and harming Japan's standing in the region and with the United States.

Abstract:This thesis analyzes Japan's comprehensive development since World War II, and the trend of Japan's economic, political, military, and diplomatic strategy at the start of the 21st century. Based on this analysis, certain predictions are made. The challenges to Sino-Japanese relations resulting from economics and trade, political Right-deviationism in Japan, the influence of public opinion on bilateral relations, the American element, and the Taiwan issue are reviewed. In recent years Sino-Japanese political relations have deteriorated as the Japanese government has carried out a great-power policy featuring Right-deviationism. The current situation features cool political relations in a period of high economic and trade relationships. Economic relations must be curbed while political relations are being cooled to a certain extent. This requires that both China and Japan make joint efforts to improve long-term bilateral relations.

Abstract:In recent years, a series of territorial disputes has been frequently observed between East Asian countries. Though the outbreak of war is not an imminent threat at present, military conflicts between involved countries are becoming more likely. Now East Asia is really at a crossroads. Under the current circumstances, there are at least four solutions available, namely, peace negotiation, military force, intermedia tion and"shelving differences and seeking joint development". However, each solution has its limitations.Peace negotiation is not a simple remedy. War is unreasonable. Intermediation and"shelving differences and seeking joint development"are not solutions once and for all. The author believes that the ideal solution is to establish a unified East Asian Community following the model of European Union. Though it would not be a plain sailing, it still is a common goal that worth continuous efforts and committments by all East Asian countries.

Abstract:The United States launched the “Indo-Pacific Economic Framework” in May 2022, which is an important part of its “Indo-Pacific Strategy” in the economic field. As representatives, experts, ministerial meetings and formal negotiations continue, the tendency of the United States and its allies to establish a political and economic integration alliance to encircle China in the Asia-Pacific region has become increasingly apparent. The purpose of this paper is to study China’s response, how to hold high the banner of peace, development, cooperation, and win-win, promote high-level opening up, and achieve Chinese path to modernization on the path of peaceful development. Through the detailed analysis of the negotiation process and other research methods, it is suggested that in the short and long term, we should focus on the rapid realization of the equal opening of IPEF and the establishment of a community with a shared future for mankind.

Abstract:The period of détente is usually associated with a decrease of confrontation in US-Soviet relations, the signing of agreements on the limitation of strategic weapons and anti-missile defense systems and the development of trade and economic relations, scientific and cultural exchanges. Strengthening security in Europe is considered another facet of détente. From this perspective détente is viewed as an alternative to the Cold War, and the end of détente is seen as a missed opportunity to develop international relations in the direction of a secure world with working mechanisms for harmonizing the interests of both the great powers and other countries. The article deals with the history of relations in the triangle USA – USSR – China in 1977– 1980. The evolution of Washington’s foreign policy strategy and the inclusion to it policies towards the USSR and China in these years came at the background of pronounced Soviet– Chinese antagonism. In the first months there was no clear plan in the actions of the Carter administration, there was a sharp rivalry for influence on the president between individual political figures (first of all – S. Vance and Zb. Brzezinski). They proposed different scenarios of the development of the US–Soviet and US – China relations. Throughout the Carter presidency, the US used as much as possible the tensions between Moscow and Beijing. In the framework of tripartite relations, each of the sides consistently pursued its own course aimed at achieving unilateral benefits. There were no attempts to establish a trilateral dialogue with an agreed agenda. The processes of détente practically did not affect the complex of international problems that existed within the American – Soviet – Chinese triangle. Moreover, Washington’s use of the «Chinese card» prevented the reduction of tensions in American–Soviet relations and strengthened the Cold War logic and methods in the planning and implementation of US foreign policy.

Abstract:Abstract In response to the changing geopolitical landscape in Asia, both China and the United States attempt to alter the regional order in their own favour, both in the economic and security realms. This article shows how diverging views on future arrangements are leading to strategic shifts and increasing tension between these two Great Powers. As part of its quest for Great-Power status, China has been actively pushing its regional initiatives such as the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), as well as adopting assertive security policies towards its neighbours. In contrast, in order to counter China's growing influence America's regional strategy is undergoing a subtle shift from ‘rebalancing to Asia’ to focusing on the ‘Indo-Pacific’ region. However, amid an intensifying trade war and other challenges facing the region, China has chosen to moderate its proactive foreign policy-orientation in the past few years. In particular, China has made attempts to downplay its domestic rhetoric, rebuild strategic relationship with India and Japan, and to reassure ASEAN states in the South China Sea. In response to the Indo-Pacific strategy, it would be more effective for China to articulate a more inclusive regional vision and promote an institutional framework that also accommodates a US presence in the region.
