Abstract:This thesis analyzes Japan's comprehensive development since World War II, and the trend of Japan's economic, political, military, and diplomatic strategy at the start of the 21st century. Based on this analysis, certain predictions are made. The challenges to Sino-Japanese relations resulting from economics and trade, political Right-deviationism in Japan, the influence of public opinion on bilateral relations, the American element, and the Taiwan issue are reviewed. In recent years Sino-Japanese political relations have deteriorated as the Japanese government has carried out a great-power policy featuring Right-deviationism. The current situation features cool political relations in a period of high economic and trade relationships. Economic relations must be curbed while political relations are being cooled to a certain extent. This requires that both China and Japan make joint efforts to improve long-term bilateral relations.

Abstract:The role of values in Sino-Japan relations in the post-war era has long been ignored,while the tangible economic interests are often rendered a dominant position in this bilateral structure.This paper argues that Japan's diplomacy toward China can be roughly classified into three types,namely circumvention and surpassing,persistence and challenging,linkage and integration,based on the paradigm of values and interests,manifested in the connection and interaction between the value proposition from the spiritual realm and the interest appeals from the realistic perspective.Their profound impact demonstrates that values have been playing a special and increasingly distinctive role in the postwar Sino-Japan relations.

Abstract:Following the trend of quick development of international organizations, China has to find out her cultural orientation in her closer cooperation with international organizations. First, China should actively join different kinds of international dialogues, to advance cultural “taking” and “giving” simultaneously. Secondly, emphasize the dynamic study of “idea strategy” and the construction of “cultural politics”. Thirdly, truly comprehend and well explain the contemporary value of Chinese cultural tradition, based on the deep understanding of the practical demands of modern world and China's national interests. For example, we should exploit more theoretical space on the issue of “human rights” and “sovereign rights”. Considering the peaceful international communication, the studies of “evolutionary learning”, “communication and human behavior”, “intercultural conflict”, are good sources of inspiration.

Abstract:In recent years,the Japanese administrations,from Koizumi,Abe to Fukuda,all attach great importance to the spiritual and value contents of Sino-Japan relations,the under current of this bilateral relationship.Especially,the former Prime Minister Fukuda intensively adjusted the previous "value-oriented" foreign policy of Koizumi and Abe administrations.Based on the concept of "return to the classical",Fukuda managed to reconstruct the spiritual and value building between Japan and China,therefore made this bilateral relationship an existence not only built on interests and stakes but also founded on those values commonly understood,pursued and accepted by both parties.Only in this way can the Sino-Japan relationship reduce its vulnerability and achieve greater vitality.The consensus accomplished in the fourth political document between China and Japan is a "new dimension" towards this vision.Undoubtedly,it is an important political heritage of former Prime Minister Fukuda's foreign policy towards China.

Abstract:This study focuses on the nature of contrasting cultural values between China and Japan. Considering the values traditionally recognized as being unique and distinctive to China as well as those identified in previous research, four short stories addressing cultural conflict between Chinese and Japanese values were devised. Eight Japanese college students studying at universities in western Japan were interviewed in the winter of 2014 and were asked to openly give their interpretation of behaviors of those bound by conventional Chinese values. The qualitative analyses of the verbal data resulted in the extraction of coded concepts, which were then arranged to enable a comparison with our previous study that was similarly conducted with 18 Chinese college students. Five sets of contrasting cultural values between China and Japan were identified: 1) Respect for an individual’s mianzi (face) and original opinions versus respect for group consensus and opinions; 2) Prioritization of enthusiasm over planning in maintaining friendships versus priority on appointment and efficiency; 3) Wider human networking versus limited human relationships; 4) Openness and directness among good friends versus reservation and maintenance of respectful distance; 5) Social expected repayment from children to parents versus one-way devotion from parents to children. It is considered that raising people’s awareness of the historical background and social reasoning behind distinct cultural values—and the rationale behind them—would help them understand seemingly similar but, in fact, very contrasting cultural values of a neighboring country.

Abstract:The relationships among the four countries and six sides in Eastern Asia—— Sino-Japan, Sino-America, Sino-Russia, Japan-America, Japan-Russia, and Russia-America——are not determined by any individual but by common interests and internal and external contradictions involved. Meanwhile the judgement of situation and policy-making of any country also affect the relationships among all the countries. To construct a new international pattern that is good to China and not harmful to other countries requires superb diplomatic skills.

A correct view and treatment of the historical issues is not only the political foundation of Sino - Japanese relations, but also the propelling force for further cooperation among China, Japan, ROK, etc. In this regard, while pushing forward cooperation in East Asia, one must also analyze Japan's view on Asia and its evolution, from which some historical lessons may be drawn.

Abstract:Since 2003, the Chinese government has launched a succession of public diplomacy campaigns and programmes, the dynamics, potentials and implications of which have drawn growing scrutiny from Chinese scholars and government officials. Based on document reviews and interviews with Chinese scholars, officials, and think tanks, however, this article finds that the focus of the existing literature is on the image China wishes to project to the outside world, and that there is still little consensus on the strategic motivations behind the country's conduct of public diplomacy. In its conclusion, the article expounds that garnering international respect for China's political and social system and respect domestically for its political legitimacy is what the Chinese government really cares about. This being the case, China will not be satisfied to be merely an emerging power in light of its greater ambition to rejuvenate its values and political system.

Abstract:executive summary: This article argues that Japan's human rights diplomacy has undergone four distinct stages in the postwar period and analyzes Tokyo's efforts in case studies focusing on the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and China. main argumentFor decades after its defeat in World War II, Japan was perceived as a laggard in promoting human rights internationally. Today, Japan advances human rights on the global stage through a combination of peacekeeping missions, developmental assistance, and other technical investments in human security. However, Tokyo notably refrains from involving itself in certain conflicts where an unambiguous stance would interrupt meaningful business or investment ties. Japan's gradual but significant shift regarding the use of human rights as a tool of diplomacy reflects the close links of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party to domestic commercial interests. As a result of these links, the Japanese government increasingly understands its foreign policy aims through a primarily geoeconomic lens. policy implications • Focus on global human rights standards instead of individual cases . Past interactions with Japan demonstrate that underscoring the larger economic and political benefits of a more robust global human rights regime, as well as the isolating effects of not upholding international standards and responsibilities, can be an effective diplomatic approach. Such methods have been a good motivator for sparking pivotal shifts in Japanese behavior. • Embrace business-sector leadership on human rights promotion . Japan is on a positive trajectory toward embracing human rights diplomacy primarily because of the changing priorities of large companies and industry groups. Thus, addressing human rights through these domestic commercial avenues and encouraging business-to-business dialogue represent perhaps the best hope for concrete and meaningful engagement. • Welcome and co-sign Japanese leadership whenever evident . Japan has displayed a newfound sense of "skin in the game" from its recent leadership in high-standard multilateral trade facilitation. Simultaneously, Japan has continued to distinguish itself as an international proponent of good governance frameworks. Japan's success in socializing its "free and open Indo-Pacific" vision should be used to incentivize Tokyo's further involvement in devising new means of holding China and other rising powers accountable to international governance standards.

Abstract:Public diplomacy is one kind of foreign policy behaviour in the implementation of foreign policy through foreign publicity by a state government.In the past,the Chinese government didn't use the term of public diplomacy officially,but practiced it.The progress of Chinese public diplomacy practice can be divided into three stages,its goals and tasks were different at each stage.First,it publicized new China,and supported world revolution.Second,it enhanced reform and open to the outside world,safeguarded world peace.Third,refuted the idea that China was a threat,advocated peaceful development.To summarize,the idea of publicity was gradually abandoned,modern public diplomacy is accepted in the practice of China's public diplomacy.China should take measures to build an international image of cooperative,friendly and responsible country,in order to enhance peaceful development.

Abstract:Cultural explanations of foreign behavior have become an important vantage point for researchers of foreign policy.China has been blessed with a time-tested rich cultural tradition,which has exerted a profound influence on contemporary Chinese foreign strategy and policies.To be specific,the non-religious nature of traditional Chinese culture has helped to sustain the non-aggressiveness of China's foreign policy;the conservative nature of traditional Chinese culture,stressing stability and order,makes it easier for China to adopt a "integrated" strategy by maintaining the status quo in the current international order;the traditional holistic value system and the holistic way of thinking have bestowed a unique behavioral trait on Chinese diplomacy;and the morality-centered perception of political power has endowed Chinese diplomacy with a particular theme of self-discipline and idealism,which is the in-built spiritual motivation for China to play the role of a "responsible power".

Abstract:This paper examines the impact of cultural differences between China and the United States on their diplomatic relations. The cultural differences between the two countries include collectivism versus individualism, respect for elders and hierarchy, and different economic and political systems. The differences in values and approaches have led to recent severe antagonism between the two nations, with the treat of a potential “cold war 2.0.” The paper argues that the United States; attempts to impose its values and culture on other nations and its history of attacking countries to spread democracy have further escalated tensions. The study concludes that these cultural differences play a crucial role in determining the nature of the relationship between the two nations and have significant implications for the world.

Abstract:As a rising power, China has realized that it is an urgent task to improve its national image among foreign publics. In the era of Xi Jinping, China has invested a substantial amount of resources in its foreign-language media to present a more favorable national image to an international audience. This study provides a novel approach to examine the content of China’s Japanese-language media and its dissemination. The study found that the Chinese state media promotes China’s soft power using two main strategies: (1) highlighting China’s culture and economic achievements, and (2) providing positive stories of China. A comparative content analysis of Chinese and Japanese media shows that Chinese media’s narratives are not well circulated in Japan’s public opinion field. This study has both substantive and methodological significance. Substantively, this investigation enhances our understanding of China’s strategic use of state-owned media for public diplomacy. Methodologically, this research contributes to the employment of quantitative text analysis methods on Japanese-language data.

Abstract:Relations between China and Japan sank into a period of"political coolness"in the past five years.Recently,a basic framework of"building mutually strategic reciprocity"in developing bilateral ties of the two countries has been redefined by means of mutual visits of leaders of the two countries and contacts between them on various international occasions.Nevertheless,some negative elements still stand out prominently.Overcoming them requires a lot of efforts by the two countries to set up a crisis management mechanism at the national level and to have their national feelings to be tuned in,so as to ensure basic direction of their bilateral ties and further development.

Since the establishment of the PRC,China has successively adopted the "struggle philosophy"and the pragmatic philosophy,which are differentiated by the state's position,national mission,resources and diplomatic thought. Since 2000,the relationship between China and the world has undergone historic transformations. This change requires China to explore a new world philosophy,take on new diplomatic missions,cultivate new diplomatic resources,and establish new diplomatic thought.

Abstract:The profound change of political thought in Japan is the key factor that affects the Sino-Japanese political relations at the beginning of the 21st century. Since the end of the Cold War, the politically rightward tendency in Japan, coupled with the rise of strong nationalism, has set back Japan's policy toward China. During Koizumi's reign, the decision-making mechanism in Japan had been excessively tempered by the Prime Minister himself, thus intensifying the contradiction between China and Japan, as well as alarming the Japanese society in general and insightful figures in particular. Abe Shinzo entered the political arena in such a context, not only affected by the trend of political thought, but also witnessing the damage done to Japan's internal politics and foreign policies by this very trend. After his election to become the Prime Minister, Abe has to think of getting rid of the aftermath of Koizumi's foreign policy and improve Japan's relations with China. Once the politically rightward tendency is somewhat checked, the Sino-Japanese political relations are likely to improve. In turn, the improved Sino-Japanese political relations would further check Japan's politically rightward tendency. However, if such a tendency rears its ugly head once again, the Sino-Japanese political relations would inevitably suffer setbacks.
