Abstract:Recent advances in the fabrication and manipulation of sub-wavelength optical fibers provide new methods for building chemical and biological sensors, generating supercontinuum light by nonlinear pulse propagation, and constructing microphotonic components and devices. We examine the properties of sub-wavelength dimension optical fibers as waveguides. The reported silica submicrometer- or nanometer-diameter wires are suitable for low-loss optical wave guiding. Thanks to their excellent uniformity, large length, high flexibility, and strength, these wires can be manipulated and assembled with high accuracy.

Abstract:The characteristic of nanowire is gradually attracting many researchers with the potential applications of nano devices, nano sensors, solar sells and so on. This paper describes fabrication and evaluation of high density Cu nanowire array grown in anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) template. To fabricate high density nanowire array, at first Au films with the thickness of 100 nm was evaporated on one side of AAO template as a conductive working electrode. Nanowire array was formed via electro deposition under a constant current of 0.001 A approximately in copper sulfate aqueous solution at room temperature. After etching in 3 M NaOH aqueous solution for 30min to remove porous aluminum, we obtained high density nanowire array perpendicular to PDMS substrate. High density Cu nanowire arrays with diameters of 80 nm, approximately, were observed by scanning electron microscope. In order to understand the performances of Cu nanowire array, the electrical and mechanical properties of them were studied in details. As a result, the shear adhesion was 8.2 kPa, and the electrical resistance was 7.0Ω・cm^2.

Abstract:Characteristic of nanowire is gradually attracting many researchers with potential applications of nano devices, nano sensors, solar sells and so on. This paper describes fabrication and evaluation of high density Cu nanowire array grown in porous aluminum. To fabricate high density nanowire array, at first Ta and Cu films were evaporated on one side of Si wafer as a conductive working electrode. Nanowire array was formed via electrical deposition in copper sulfate aqueous solution. After etching in 2 M NaOH aqueous solution to remove porous aluminum, we obtained high density nanowire array on Si wafer perpendicular to its surface. High density Cu nanowires with average diameter of 200 nm, approximately, were observed by scanning electron microscope. In order to understand performances of Cu nanowire array, electrical and mechanical properties of them were studied in details.

Abstract:With the development of nanotechnology in recent years, many researchers have focused on the development of nanomaterials and nanostructures such as nanowires. To apply these nanomaterials and nanostructures into nanodevices, there are great needs of the quantitative measurement of electrical properties of materials in an infinitesimal area. Recently, we proposed a novel microwave atomic force microscopy (M-AFM). M-AFM probe was fabricated by forming a microwave transmission line on the probe cantilever. By combining the AFM technique with microwave-based measurement, M-AFM has the ability to sense the topography and microwave image simultaneously with a high spatial resolution. In this study, we tried to evaluate quantitatively electrical properties of single crystalline aluminum nanowire. Using M-AFM, both measurements of the surface topography and the microwave response of single crystalline aluminum nanowire were succeeded. As a result, the electrical property of microwave signals was detected as the difference of the voltage value.
Resistivity and Field Electron Emission of Nanowires Formed by Electron Beam Induced Chemical Vapor Deposition

Abstract:Self-standing iron nanowires were fabricated at the apex of a tungsten needle tip by electron beam induced deposition. This sharp needle tip which adhered to the nanowire can be moved with a stepping motor and piezo-driving device, and was attached inside a specially designed transmission electron microscope specimen holder. A copper conductor substrate, with which the approaching nanowires will build up a closed electric circuit, was set on the holder. The tungsten needle tip accompanied with the EBICVD nanowires made contact with the substrate and then a voltage was applied between the two electrodes. Resistivity values of the examined nanowires, by a devised Lock-in-Amplifier circuit, range from 0.1 m to 103 m. Our investigation might have implications in the fabrication and characterization of nano-electronics device. Precursor with phenanthrene (C4H10) was used and the deposition experiment was done using a scanning electron microscope at room temperature. It was found that the surface structure at the top of the nanorod, such as a small protrusion within only several nanometers scale, has significant influence on the field emission property. An emission current of several tens of nano-ampere flowing through this nanorod could induce resistance heating. In several minutes, this thermal energy could transform the original amorphous carbon into a graphite-like structure embedded with fullerenes. The turn-on voltage of the graphite-like nanorod was about 11 V less than that of the original amorphous case.

Abstract:In recent years, the size of electrical devices has evolved into the micrometer-scale and their circuit electrical wirings are also becoming smaller. The sizes of the wirings are on the nanometer order. The electrical resistivity becomes larger and the failure current density become smaller because of the size effect on grain boundary scattering. So in this study, we proposed the application of single crystalline aluminum nanowire as electrical wiring in the circuit. High quality Al nanowires were fabricated by simply heating the Al film. The driving force is determined by the compressive stresses caused by the thermal expansion mismatch between the Al film and Si substrate. The range of heating temperatures was between 473 and 583 K and the heating time was approximately 3 h. After heating, we observed numerous Al nanowires on the film surface by using the scanning electron microscope. We determined the relationship between heating temperature and Al nanowires growth. By using TEM, we confirmed that the Al nanowires were single crystalline. In order to understand the performance of individual Al nanowires, their electrical properties were also studied in detail.

Abstract:Here, a new method is demonstrated that uses sideways pulsed laser deposition to deliberately nanowires into a desired shape after growth and fabricate are shaped composite nanowire arrays of a wide range of nanomaterials. The starting nanowires can be ZnO, but the materials to be deposited can be metallic semiconductor, or ceramic depending on the application. This method provides a general approach for rational fabrication of a wide range of side be sire or "core-shell" nanowire arrays with controllable degree of bending and internal strain. Considering the ZnO is a piezoelectric and semiconductive materials, its electric properties change when deformed. Thus technique has potential applications in tunable electronics, optoelectronics, and piezotronics.

Abstract:The overall aim of this work is to produce arrays of field emitting microguns, based on carbon nanotubes, which can be utilised in the manufacture of large area field emitting displays, parallel e-beam lithography systems and electron sources for high frequency amplifiers. This paper will describe the work carried out to produce patterned arrays of aligned multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) using a dc plasma technique and a Ni catalyst. We will discuss how the density of the carbon nanotube/fibres can be varied by reducing the deposition yield through nickel interaction with a diffusion layer or by direct lithographic patterning of the Ni catalyst to precisely define the position of each nanotube/fibre. Details of the field emission behaviour of the different arrays of MWCNTS will also be presented.

Abstract:This paper describes the fabrication of Au nanowire utilizing porous aluminum. To fabricate nanowires, at first Au film with the thickness of 100 nm was evaporated on one side of porous aluminum as a conductive working electrode. Nanowires were obtained via electrodeposition under a constant electrical potential about -3 V in 40g/l KAu(CN)_2, 100g/l KH_2PO_4 aqueous solution at room temperature. After etching in 3 M NaOH aqueous solution to remove porous aluminum, nanowires with the average diameter of 200 nm and length 8 approximately, were observed by scanning electron microscope. It was confirmed that the nanowires consisted of Au by energy dispersive X-ray analysis.

Electromagnetic Performance Of Spirally Deformed Coated Nanowires

Abstract:In this study, we demonstrated the spiral formation of the metal coated nanowires (NWs). The spiral formation is a self-deformation technique based on the residual stress of the thin film. The NW works as a conductive coil at a nanoscale. The fabricated coil has a diameter of approximately 1-5 mu m and a high conductivity (similar to 2.18 x 10(6) /Omega.m). The conductive coil could be used for electromagnetic sensing according to the principle of electromagnetic induction. Specifically, it could be used for magnetic state observation and control at a nanoscale.

Abstract:Individual carbon nanorod was fabricated on a tungsten needle tip by electron beam induced deposition. Precursor was phenanthrene (C4H10) and deposition experiment was done using a scanning electron microscope at room temperature. Tungsten needle tip together with the as-deposited nanorod was mounted inside a specially designed transmission electron microscope (TEM) specimen holder and its field electron emission properties were investigated in situ. Relationship between micro-structure and emission property of the nanorod was established. Abstract:Copper (Cu) nanowires films are deposited on the molybdenum film-coated Al2O3 ceramic substrates by using the electron beam vapor deposition technique. The films were characterized by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscope , x-ray diffraction spectrum and energy dispersive spectrum. The surface morphology show that the Cu nanowires have excellent length-to-diameter ratio of 300, and each Cu nanowires diameter is uniform. The field electron emission measurements of Cu nanowires films were also carried out showing the turn on field as low as 2.5 V/μm and the average current density of 0.10 mA/cm2 at electric field of 10.8 V/μm were obtained from a broad uniform emission screen over 3.0 cm2.

Abstract:Crystalline silver nanowire arrays (see Figure) with high aspect ratio are produced here by electrodeposition from a reverse hexagonal liquid-crystalline phase. Enhancement of the alignment is shown to be possible by applying a high electric field gradient during deposition. High-density bundles can be obtained by washing the deposited material and single wires can easily be retrieved by sonication of these bundles.
