Abstract:Prior studies on electron emission show possibly beneficial effects of nanoscale phenomena on energy-conversion characteristics. For example, recent work has shown that the electric field around a nanoscale field emission device can increase the average energy of emitted electrons. This geometric effect could be useful in cooling devices based on the Nottingham effect. We consider here the hypothesis that nanoscale effects can favorably influence the energy-conversion efficiency and capacity of thermionic and field emission devices. Required improvements in experimental and computational tools for characterizing such effects include new methods of measuring electron energy distributions (EEDs) from nanoscale emitters and improved modeling of transport between bulk and quantum-confined materials. Accurate emission modeling requires calculation of a self-consistent solution to Schrodinger's equation and Poisson's equation. A particularly promising approach is the non-equilibrium Green's function (NF-GF) formalism. Using NEGF, tractable solutions can be obtained for complex quantum problems because of several features inherent to the approach. For emission modeling, the primary benefit of the NEGF is that boundaries can be treated as bulk sources, which eliminates the need for periodic boundary conditions and enables the coupling of transport between bulk and confined materials. Recent work on EED measurements reveals indications of quantum confinement, as shown by the multiple peaks in the energy distribution. This paper includes representative simulation results and associated electron energy distribution measurements that identify interesting and potentially useful features of thermally excited electron emission phenomena. The paper concludes with recommendations for further study and engineering development.

Abstract:One of the outstanding challenges in nanotechnology is how to assemble individual nano-objects into macroscopic architectures while preserving their extraordinary properties. For example, the one-dimensional character of electrons in individual carbon nanotubes leads to extremely anisotropic transport, optical, and magnetic phenomena, but their macroscopic manifestations have been limited. Here, we describe novel methods for preparing macroscopic films, sheets, and fibers of highly aligned carbon nanotubes and their applications to basic and applied studies. Sufficiently thick films act as ideal terahertz polarizers, and appropriately doped films operate as polarization-sensitive, flexible, powerless, and ultrabroadband photodetectors. Together with recently developed chirality enrichment methods, these developments will allow us to probe, understand, and control dynamic conductivities of interacting one-dimensional electrons in macroscopic single crystals of single-chirality single-wall carbon nanotubes.

Abstract:In this paper, we report on the synthesis and applications of semiconducting nanostructures. Nanostructures of interest were zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowires and tungsten disulfide (WS2) nanotubes where transistors/phototransistors and photovoltaic (PV) energy conversion cells have been fabricated. ZnO nanowires were grown with both high- and low-temperature approaches, depending on the application. Individual ZnO nanowire side-gated transistors revealed excellent performance with a field-effect mobility of 928 cm(2)/V . s. ZnO networks were proposed for large-area macroelectronic devices as a less lithographically intense alternative to individual nanowire transistors where mobility values in excess of 20 cm(2)/V . s have been achieved. Flexible PV devices utilizing ZnO nanowires as electron acceptors and for photoinduced charge separation and transport have been presented. Phototransistors were fabricated using individual WS2 nanotubes, where clear sensitivity to visible light has been observed. The results presented here simply reveal the potential use of inorganic nanowires/tubes for various optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:With the advancement of micro- and nano-scale devices and systems, there has been growing interest in understanding material mechanics at small scales. Nanowires, as fundamental one-dimensional building blocks, offer significant advantages for constructing micro/nano-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS/NEMS) and serve as an ideal platform for studying their size-dependent mechanical properties. This paper reviews the development and current state of nanowire mechanical testing over the past decade. The first part introduces the related issues of nanowire mechanical testing. The second section explores several key topics and the latest research progress regarding the mechanical properties of nanowires, including ultralarge elastic strain, large plastic strain, 'smaller is stronger', cold welding, and ductile-to-brittle transition. Finally, the paper envisions future development directions, identifying possible research hotspots and application prospects.

Abstract:Carbon nano-tubes are alternatives to conventional metal/silicon tips for field emission sources. They exhibit extraordinary field emission properties because of their high electrical conductivity, their high aspect ratio "whisker-like" shape for optimum geometrical field enhancement, and remarkable thermal stability. This paper will review the PECVD growth process, and the micro-fabrication techniques needed to produce well defined carbon nano-tube based micro-electron sources for use in a variety of applications.

Abstract:In the last couple of decades, there has been a lot of progress in the synthesis methods of nano-structural materials, but still the field has a large number of puzzles to solve. Metal nanowires (NWs) and their alloys represent a sub category of the 1-D nano-materials and there is a large effort to study the microstructural, physical and chemical properties to use them for further industrial applications. Due to technical limitations of single component NWs, the hetero-structured materials gained attention recently. Among them, multi-segmented NWs are more diverse in applications, consisting of two or more segments that can perform multiple function at a time, which confer their unique properties. Recent advancement in characterization techniques has opened up new opportunities for understanding the physical properties of multi-segmented structures of 1-D nanomaterials. Since the multi-segmented NWs needs a reliable response from an external filed, numerous studies have been done on the synthesis of multi-segmented NWs to precisely control the physical properties of multi-segmented NWs. This paper highlights the electrochemical synthesis and physical properties of multi-segmented NWs, with a focus on the mechanical and magnetic properties by explaining the shape, microstructure, and composition of NWs.

Abstract:Accompanied by the development and utilization of renewable energy sources, efficient energy storage has become a key topic. Electrochemical energy storage devices are considered to be one of the most practical energy storage devices capable of converting and storing electrical energy generated by renewable resources, which are also used as the power source of electric vehicles and portable electronic devices. The ultimate goals of electrochemical energy storage devices are long lifespan, high safety, high power, and high energy density. To achieve the above goals, researchers have attempted to use various nanomaterials to improve electrochemical performance. Among these, 1D materials play a critical role. This review classifies nanowires according to morphologies (simple nanowires, core–shell/coated nanowires, hierarchical/heterostructured nanowires, porous/mesoporous nanowires, hollow structures) and combined forms (nanowire arrays, nanowire networks, nanowire bundles) and introduces their characteristics and corresponding synthetic methods. The characteristics and advantages of nanowires in lithium‐ion, sodium‐ion and zinc‐ion batteries, and supercapacitors, along with in situ characterization of nanowire electrode are reflected in the application examples. In the summary and outlook section, some comments are presented to provide directions for further exploring nanowire based electrochemical energy storage in the future. Nanowires possess the advantages of 1D nanoarchitecture and various combinations to further enhance the performance of electrochemical energy storage devices. The current status of nanowires, including methods for controllable synthesis, and their significant applications in lithium‐ion, sodium‐ion and zinc‐ion batteries, and supercapacitors, is presented. Meanwhile, in situ characterization of nanowire electrodes is also mentioned as an efficient approach.
