Abstract:Abstract (100 Word Limit): When its size goes down to the wavelength of the guided light, an optical nanofibre/nanowire exhibits interesting properties such as tight optical confinement, strong near-field interaction, abnormal dispersion, enhanced surface effects and excellent mechanical flexibilities, which opens opportunities for combining waveguide optics with near-field optics, nonlinear optics, plasmonics, quantum optics and optomechanics on the nanoscale and low power level, and intrigues a variety of novel nanophotonic components/devices. This talk reviews the principles and technological applications of optical nanofibres and nanowires. Future applications of these one-dimensional building blocks for optical communications and sensing are also discussed. Presenter Bio (100 Word Limit): Limin Tong received his BS and MSc degrees in Physics and PhD degree in Materials Science and Engineering from Zhejiang University, China, in 1991, 1994 and 1997, respectively. In 1997 he joined the Department of Physics, Zhejiang University, China as an assistant professor. In 2001 he joined Mazur group, Harvard University as a visiting scientist, and returned Zhejiang University in 2004. He is currently a professor and director of Department of Optical Engineering at Zhejiang University. His research interest has been in the area of nanophotonics and fibre optics.

Abstract:Recent advances in the fabrication and manipulation of sub-wavelength optical fibers provide new methods for building chemical and biological sensors, generating supercontinuum light by nonlinear pulse propagation, and constructing microphotonic components and devices. We examine the properties of sub-wavelength dimension optical fibers as waveguides. The reported silica submicrometer- or nanometer-diameter wires are suitable for low-loss optical wave guiding. Thanks to their excellent uniformity, large length, high flexibility, and strength, these wires can be manipulated and assembled with high accuracy.

Abstract:Optical micro/nanofihers are one-dimensional free-standing waveguiding structures with diameters close to or smaller than the vacuum wavelength of the guided light. Fabricated by physically drawing glass fiber at high temperature these fibers show excellent surface smoothness and diameter uniformity, high mechanical strength, tight optical confinement, strong evanescent field, evident surface field enhancement, and large wavelength/diameter-dependent waveguide dispersion, especially much lower waveguiding loss than all other micro/nanowaveguides with similar geometries. These merits offer them great potentials in applications ranging from near field optical coupling, optical sensing, atom optics, nonlinear optics, laser technology, and optomechanics. In this review, starting from the basic waveguiding properties of optical micro/nanofihers, we introduce our recent progress in high precision fiber fabrication and micro/nanofiber-based near field coupling, optical sensors, and nonlinear optical devices. At same time, we also mention relative works from other groups. Finally, we conclude this article with a brief outlook.

Abstract:Among various nanostructures for low-dimensional photonics, the one-dimensional nanowire is of great importance owing to its capability of routing tightly confined light fields in single-mode with least space and material requirement, minimized optical path, and high mechanical flexibility. Free-standing optical nanowires or nanofibers fabricated by either chemical growth or physical drawing techniques surpass nanowaveguides fabricated by almost all other means in terms of sidewall smoothness and diameter uniformity, conveying their low waveguiding losses.With high index contrast between the core and the surrounding, a nanowire can guide light with tightly confined large fractional evanescent waves, which enables highly localized near-field interaction between the guided fields and the surrounding media. In this talk, we show the possibility of on-chip integration of free-standing optical nanofibers and nanowires. Firstly, by embedding nanofibers with microfluidic chips, we show ultrasensitive optical sensors for physical and bio-chemical detection. Secondly, by near-field coupling of free-standing nanowires/nanofibers with silicon-on-insulator waveguides, we show hybrid photonic circuits for optical modulation and light generation on silicon chips.

Abstract:As typical one-dimensional nanostructures, photonic nanowires (e.g., semiconductor nanowires, glass nanowires, polymer nanowires and metallic nanowires) offer unique properties for manipulating light on nanoscale with tight optical confinement, strong near-field interaction, field enhancement and abnormal dispersion[1], which opens new opportunities for exploring light-matter interaction on the nanoscale, as well as for intriguing nanoscale photonic circuits and devices that is superior to their conventional counterparts. This talk introduces our recent work on the generation (e.g., nanowire light emission[2,3] and lasing[4,5]), wavelength conversion (e.g., second-harmonic and supercontinuum generation in single nanowires[6,7]), propagation (e.g., nanowire waveguides[8]), modulation (e.g., single nanowire ultrafast optical modulators[9]) and detection (e.g., single nanowire photodetector [10] and sensors [11,12]) of light with single nanowires.

Abstract:By means of high-temperature physical drawing, glasses can be directly drawn into subwavelength-or nanometer-diameter fibers. As-fabricated nanofibers show excellent diameter uniformity and surface smoothness for low-loss optical wave guiding, and may exhibit a series of interesting properties such as tight optical confinement, evanescent guidance and high waveguide dispersion. These fibers provide promising building blocks for photonic applications in optical communications, optical sensing and nonlinear optics.

Abstract:Subwavelength- and nanometer-diameter glass nanofibers have been fabricated using a high-temperature taper-drawing process. As-drawn nanofibers show extraordinary uniformities in terms of diameter variation and surface roughness and are suitable for single-mode optical wave guiding. Measured optical losses of these nanofibers are typically below 0.1dB/mm. Photonic devices such as linear waveguides, optical couplers and microrings assembled with nanofibers are also demonstrated. Our results show that taper-drawn glass nanofibers are promising building blocks for micro- and nano-scale photonic devices.

Abstract:Air-clad silica nanofibers, named for their submicrometer diameters, have a large core–cladding index contrast for efficient optical confinement. For single-mode operation, these fibers are usually thinner than the wavelength of the light they carry and are therefore also called sub wavelength-diameter fibers. The small diameter of a nanofiber and the large core–cladding index contrast yield a number of interesting optical properties such as tight optical confinement, large evanescent fields, strong field enhancement, and large waveguide dispersions. A few techniques can be used to fabricate silica nanowires or nanofibers such as photo or electron beam lithography, chemical growth, and taper drawing of optical fibers. The taper-drawing method exhibits simplicity in fabrication and also the ability to fabricate nanofibers with extraordinary diameter uniformities, atomic-level surface smoothness, and long length that are difficult to achieve by any other means. The nanofibers obtained with the two-step taper-drawing techniques consist of three parts—a millimeters-long taper that is connected to the starting microfiber, a uniform nanofiber with a length up to tens of millimeters, and an abruptly tapered end that is usually several to tens of micrometers in length.

Abstract:Based on the exact solutions of Maxwell's equations, we have studied the basic theoretical properties of submicron and nano-diameter air-cladding silica-wire waveguides. The single-mode condition and the modal field of the fundamental modes have been obtained. Silica wires with diameters of 100-1000nm and lengths ranging from hundreds of micrometer to over 1 millimeter have been fabricated. SEM examination shows that these wires have uniform diameters and smooth surfaces, which are favorable for optical wave guiding. Light has been sent into these wires by optical coupling, and guiding light through a bent wire has also been demonstrated. These wires are promising for assembling photonic devices on a micron or submicron scale.

Abstract:A number of techniques have been developed for the fabrication of glass nanowires (e.g., photo- or electron beam lithography, chemical growth, and taper drawing). Of these techniques, the taper drawing technique yields nanowires with the highest uniformity. Using sapphire fibers, flame or laser-heated glass (fibers) can be drawn directly into nanowires with diameters down to tens of nanometers. Nanowires obtained with this technique show extraordinary diameter uniformity, atomic-level surface smoothness, large length, high mechanical strength and pliability for assembling and patterning, making them promising building blocks for the future micro- and nanoscale photonic devices.

Abstract:Optical micro/nanofibers (MNFs) taper-drawn from silica fibers possess intriguing optical and mechanical properties. Recently, MNF array or MNFs with identical geometries have been attracting more and more attention, however, current fabrication technique can draw only one MNF at a time, with a low drawing speed (typically 0.1 mm/s) and a complicated process for high-precision control, making it inefficient in fabricating multiple MNFs. Here, we propose a parallel-fabrication approach to simultaneously drawing multiple (up to 20) MNFs with almost identical geometries. For fiber diameter larger than 500 nm, measured optical transmittances of all as-drawn MNFs exceed 96.7% at 1550-nm wavelength, with a diameter deviation within 5%. Our results pave a way towards high-yield fabrication of MNFs that may find applications from MNF-based optical sensors, optical manipulation to fiber-to-chip interconnection.

Abstract:As typical one‐dimensional nanostructures for waveguiding tightly confined optical fields beyond the diffraction limit, metal nanowires have been used as versatile nanoscale building blocks for functional plasmonic and photonic structures and devices. Metal nanowires, especially those fabricated by bottom‐up synthesis such as Ag and Au nanowires, usually exhibit excellent diameter uniformity and surface smoothness with diameters down to tens of nanometers, which offers great opportunities for plasmonic waveguiding of optical fields with deep‐subwavelength confinement, coherence maintenance and low scattering losses. Based on nanowire plasmonic waveguides, a variety of applications ranging from plasmonic couplers, interferometers, resonators to photon emitters have been reported in recent years. In this article, significant progresses in these nanowire plasmonic waveguides, circuits and devices are reviewed. Future outlook and challenges are also discussed.
